Rhys Murphy At The Double As England Beat Holland

Two goals from Arsenal striker Rhys Murphy helped England Under 19’s beat Holland Under 19’s 2-1 at Shrewsbury Town’s Prostar Stadium this evening, in a fixture shown live on Setanta Sports.

Arsenal had no less than four representatives in the England squad – and one in the Dutch team. Holland came into the fixture after smashing Scotland on Saturday, and star performer from that game Nacer Barazite kept his place in the starting line up.

Rhys Murphy, Gavin Hoyte and Henri Lansbury all started, with the latter being awarded the captains armband. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas was named among the substitutes by manager Brian Eastick.

England began in a terrific manner and looked to press home the advantage with an early goal, but despite creating the majority of chances, they failed to capitalise, boosting the visitors confidence.

Barazite fizzed an effort over after dancing through the defence, and the pressure would eventually toll, as England would go into half time break 1-0 down. Feyenoord midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum smashed home a stunning effort on 41 minutes to shock the home crowd.

Gunners midfielder Lansbury helped lift the atmosphere in the second half as the Lions pushed on, and the energy throughout the team would pay off. Rhys Murphy’s deadly finishing would see him bag two strikes in as many minutes to complete the turn around, and then it was England’s turn to keep possession and help stifle the tired visitors.

Stopper Steele helped keep out a late Dutch onslaught, with Jay Thomas and Michael Woods clearing the danger from a succession of corners. Intelligent football from Murphy in the corner helped run down the clock, despite Barazite trying to tackle his Club mate. Lansbury would then set up Murphy for the hat-trick in stoppage time, but he saw his blazed effort tipped over.

Nacer Barazite looked classy in attack for Holland, but it was the Arsenal boys on the home side that showed their true quality. Murphy, Thomas and especially Lansbury were excellent, and will look to replicate that form on for the Reserves this term.

Lansbury walked away with the Man Of The Match Award in a very good evening from the young midfielder, a terrific result for both club and country.

Wtf was Wenger thinking playing Lansbury out wide.

Lansbury is clearly a box to box central midfielder. Seems very powerful and has a great eye for the final pass. I really don’t think we needed Ramsey and should have just given Lansbury a go at the central midfield position.

Murphy was brilliant with his 2 great finishes as was Gavin Hoyte at centerback.

Thomas came on in the 2nd half as a defender….shame, would have liked to see him in the midfield as he’s great going forward.

Henri Lansbury looks back to full fitness or there abouts and looked really hungry. He drove England forward and was the best player on the pitch hands down.Great man of the match performance and if he puts as much effort in whilst wearing the Arsenal jersey it wont be too long before he moves up the pecking order.Brilliant prospect!!!!

I have allways said that Henri Lansbury was a much better prospect than Aaron Ramsay and mabey Arsene Wenger will play him in the middle instead of on the wings like one of the poster’s above have just said

I do believe Wenger has full knowledge of that, but only played him on the wing to make him a little more versatile. And the facts that he was lacking fitness, and the central midfield was too crowded, and Wenger really wanted him to play, cause he sees something in him.

I think Wenger is a big fan of him, a player that fits wonderfully in to his system.

Watched it from start to finish. Nacer looks head and shoulders above the rest of the Dutch lads. It is also obvious to spot that the young Arsenal lads for England are technically much better than their team-mates. Today was the first time i have had a chance to see Henri and Rhys play properly and i was really impressed. Like everyone has already stated Lansbury was brilliant. A real captains role….he carried the team when they seemed down and out. Jay Thomas did not play defence when he came on. He was in the centre with Henri and the Chav (Woods) and that’s what changed the game in England’s favour.

Forget the fact Rhys took both goals superbly, his all round game was top-notch. The commentators were going on about how quiet he had been prior to his goal but his touches and awareness all game were brilliant. He put one on a plate for Wellbeck which he spooned over the bar from three yards out. That wasnt an easy pass to make. He also did a couple of knock-downs to a teammate nearby off his chest, or just pulled off a nice dummy and spun behind his man, no need to be all hollywood when you play, just do the easy things, and do them right. His movement was also very impressive.

Jay-Thomas was solid as a rock when he came on. Made a few very good challenges in there and sprayed a couple of great balls around. Gavin’s pace gets him out of trouble but when he learns to position himself better and he bulks up a little he can be a star too. Better potential than Justin IMO.

I liked the fact that Murphy took up a ‘Bergkamp style’ role in the team, he looks not only a deadly finisher, but also very intelligent in his approach play.

I asked that earlier Jay. What age group does Jack play for? How come he aint there? If he played on the right instead of that Franks dude, England would have definitely had more goals tonight.

Plus, i would just like to state, i dont like Randall (His hair or his playing style). Give me Jay Thomas and Henri Lansbury over him ANY day. Even though he scored that goal against Chav reserves last week he was still terrible. Far too slow on the ball like Gilberto last season.

The arsenal players’ composure and technique really stood out from the England V Holland U19s match, Barazite, Lansbury, Thomas and Murphy had excellent games while Hoyte was alright.

As for people asking why Wenger plays young players out of position is too improve their game understanding and technique so that when they drift on the pitch due to movement off the ball they dont get lost.

Lloyd…i dont have to be AW or Steve Rowley to spot a player’s talents from a young age but Mark Randall is simply not good enough to make the grade here, unless he steps up BIG TIME. Like J said on a previous article earlier today, not everyone will make the grade here, you only have to do the maths. Some players are rated higher than others and the ones who arent rated as highly get sold off with a next sale clause in their contracts (a la Bentley, Muamba, Harper) if they dont improve drastically like Jay Simpson did thanks to his loan spell at Millwall last season.

I have already seen more potential in the likes of Lansbury, Thomas, Frimpong and Coqeulin and they’re younger than him. The only thing i would say about Randall is that he has very good vision. Unfortunately, his execution is very poor. The four guys i have just mentioned have more aspects to their game and look more promising.

People keep talking about Wilshere needing to be moved up a level but the U17 team is were he needs to be at the moment imo.
Spain did the same with Bojan and it’s not done him any harm.
At U17 level England have been drawn in the qualifiers away Spain so it will be a tough challenge.

2 teams qualify out of that group so England U17’s team should be ok, as for Jack Wilshere being moved up a level i agree with you he should stay were his because him and John Bostock were playing a year above there natural age group for England anyway, dont get me wrong he could play for the England U21’s team now and not look out of place but it is better to keep him on ice for the time being because his and John Bostock’s time will come soon enough so there is know need to rush them IMO

if Jay Thomas made the squad, why didnt Wilshire? I dont doubt Thomas’ ability to play at that level, but surely Wilshire can also play at that level seeing as despite the fact hes a year younger than Thomas, hes about the equilvalent of 2 years ahead of him ability wise, if fact hes better than all our other player who made that squad.

Don’t really agree with the comment getting at randall even though he was clumsy against barnet. He showed great footwork and ability against chelsea not just on the goal. He seems a very commited tackler to and i sure he will keep getting better the more he plays this season also wenger clearly likes him to

you have to trust wenger on the development of young players. if he thinks Randall is good enough then he will persist with him. He knows when players have poor games but he does not give in easily if he knows a player has something special.
The cream will rise to the top eventually – I mean Denilson, Eboue and Song are all first team players ….sorry I couldn’t resist.

I would like Randall if he didnt have that lacklustre nature about him. He doesnt seem committed/agressive enough. If he had half of Coquelin’s tenacity he would be very impressive. He needs to add that to his game.

Randall’s problem from what I have seen is basically that he is trying to do too much too quickly. I think he has talent but instead of being relaxed and enjoying himself on the pitch he is trying to force the issue of how good he it. Flying in to tackles that he doesnt need to make, shooting for goal when other players are better placed etc. While that confidence is admirable, Wenger likes to see team play more than individual play. Thats why i dont think Randall will make it.

wonder why wilshere not selected, he already with first team. so does gibbs, i thought he was the star for u-19 during summer tournament. i honestly think many arsenal youngsters could get into england youth set up. landsbury clearly a central midfielder but wenger must have a plan play him on the wing. maybe want to built his stamina and skills or wenger simply think landsbury can be the next rosicky, center midfield by nature but more effective on the wing.

Anyway it looked as if Rhys was going to have another frustrating day, thank Gawd he got a couple of chances and put em away. His fight goes on. Danny “Samba Boy” Welbeck didn’t have the same fortune, I think he should have put that last one away that Murphy put in the box.
