Mixed Reports Emerge Over Arsenal's Interest In Lenny

With all the Arsenal news this weekend being focused on the stunning 2-1 win over Manchester United, one story almost seem to creep past unnoticed.

On Friday afternoon, stories, or should I say story, emerged via the infamous “Arsenal News Review” that Arsenal had signed Brazilian striker Lenny Fernandes Coelho on a pre-contract deal from Palmeiras. The signing would make sense for regular Young Guns readers, as we posted the quotes from Richard Law’s meeting with the Salamanca hierarchy last month, where it was confirmed that a South American forward would be signed and loaned to The Union.

However, Myles Palmer seemed reluctant to deliver any real details about the player, nor where the information had come from. So, in the interests of our readers, we did it for you. Not research on Lenny himself, but if you wanted that you can read it Here.

But for news regarding the agreement. We’ve let the dust settle over the last two days, yet nobody can shed any light on where the information come from. We spoke to our frequently reliable South American contact to ask him, and after spending the weekend searching the news feeds and wires over there, nothing came up.

Lenny spent time on loan with Braga in Portugal, and after being used sporadically, it was no surprise the Uefa Cup outfit decided against signing him. Since then he has had a less that fruitful spell with Palmeiras, and is out of contract in January, meaning he is a free agent.

Goal.com reported yesterday that Lenny will go on loan to Osasuna, but gave no details of the transfer deal. All signs certainly point to it being another Myles hoax, although a South American striker will be brought in and sent to Salamanca in January. Normally with news such as this, the big news services pick up on it, the fact nobody has, speaks volumes.

As with all these stories, believe a transfer when the club announce it.

I read ANR before Young Guns… nuff said.

Lenny on a free is hardly sensational. Would be an obvious Wenger ‘gamble’.

    ‘Confirmed’ on Wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenny_Fernandes_Coelho

According to the Palmeiras website Lenny was signed due to legal issues over Flu’s signing of Thiago Neves so Palmeiras too Lenny and the rights to future transfer fees. Palmeiras even stated when they signed him in Jan that the player was signed for his ‘resale’ value.

Lance Futebol also reported about this:

    http://www.lancenet.com.br/clubes/PALMEIRAS/noticias/08-11-08/425323.stm?site-americano-coloca-lenny-no-arsenal-ing

But only in reference to the goal.com report. Also they highlighted that Lenny is Palmeiras’ 3rd striker and hardly used.

    Usual Wenger signing then…

Interesting that despite the reports that Lenny has been dropped he played yesterday as Palmeiras lost 1-0 to Gremio:

PALMEIRAS: Marcos; Elder Granja, Gustavo, Martinez e Leandro; Jumar (Maicosuel), Pierre (Lenny), Evandro e Léo Lima; Denilson (Jorge Preá) e Alex Mineiro

Barring injuries (Randall?) I would expect the same team/squad as for the Sheff Utd game, unless Bendtner needs a rest after his exertions on Saturday. Maybe Simpson will start with Bendtner on the bench to be called on when/if required. I too would like to see Coquelin play some more, just to see how he handles himself against a Premiership outfit.

Wenger options has 2 options: Bring in Toure in defence and push Song into midefield or push Ramsey forward into No.10, tuck Merida into the centre and play Lansbury on the left.

Simpson doesnt complement Vela upfront and Bendtner will definately be rested for Ast Villa plus on our website, Wenger says that he likes the balance that 4-5-1 is giving us.

Alex, i cannot see that, Merida is better and abit more experienced that Lansbury to be trying your options against Premiership team but you might be right because Merida is physically weaker.

Bischoff will probably play as Bendtner likely to be rested, Fonte preferred over Simpson or even Walcott though he has just come back from injury.

    I’m guessing it will be:

    Fabianski
    Hoyte Djorou Toure/Song Gibbs
    Wilshere Ramsey Coquelin/Randall Merida
    Bischoff
    Vela

Subs: Mannone, Song/Toure, Nordtveit, Randall/Coquelin, Lansbury, Bendntner, …Eduardo?/Simpson

So you are saying Lenny looks bullshit J? Cool, I was hoping our South American would be more inspiring – didn’t you have a Rowley interview saying we’d only ever buy a youngster if they are the next Kaka or something? Lenny’s record didn’t really match.

Rash: Sky Sports aren’t too great when it comes to transfer speculation. Seriously, I seem to only know 2 places on the internet I trust (unless they have quotes): BBC and the official website. Young Guns seems to be the most reliably sourced blog going though, he was on point with the Dutch fella I don’t know how to spell the name of, Coquelin, Nasri and Miquel this summer and seemed to cut down quickly on idle speculation (especially after lol zarate.)

When you start believing what Plonker Palmer writes you are in deep s–t. The man is so far up his own a-s- it is unbelievable and so delusional they should study him for a psychiatric paper.

Well, le boss said he’d be making reserves games by november, which this essentially is. he doesn’t have to play does he but as a statement of intent, in front of the home crowd, i think might do wonders if he is there.

J: Congrats on the updated site and ad deniro but do you really think trying to flog arsenal fans a poster of saha in a united shirt is going to lead anywhere?
