Competition – Win With The Young Guns Survey

As regular Young Guns readers will know, we recently celebrated our first anniversary. To tie in with that, we’d like to present our first readers survey.

This is where we ask you for your thoughts and opinions on where the site can improve, develop, and ultimately make the visiting experience more enjoyable for you. Your views really do count, and will affect the future running of the site.

Below are a selection of questions and answers that we’ve put together. Read through them carefully, and when done, scroll down to the comment section. Input the answers like so. If you wish to answer A for question one, put 1) – A, and so on.

The survey covers a whole spectrum of issues, but if you feel we’ve missed something, then feel free to add that in at the bottom.

Everybody who answers all the questions will go into a draw to win an ArseShirt of your choice. So not only do you get to decide the future of the site, but you could receive a free shirt just for entering.

I only have one comment to add and that is that it would be excellent if you included player ratings with your match reviews (and maybe links to the highlights). otherwise its a great site, love reading about our kids!!

6- You need to be a little less reactive in what you write, and your writing style still lacks maturity. Other than that you do a good job.

6 – I only give the design of the site the thumbs down because it is not possible to read the feed in Google Reader or my RSS client because the text of the site is white, so you get white on white background. You need to change the feed so that it doesn’t format the text as white. Otherwise good job I enjoy reading what you write.

    6. A very good blog. Maybe needing more professional articles but that will probably come with time. Also more in depth anaylsis on matches to find out how well players and team has been doing. But that may mean too much work as you have a good match report.

agree with above that recent player ratings were very good.
I like your writing style. to me it easily accessible – you cut out the bullsh*t that other sites seem to revel in.
However, you could have had this survey and other poll/fan opinion feedback things done via a proper survey form. Use freepollhosting.com and surveymonkey.com

    Keep up the good work

    6) As mentioned above I’d like it if you included a split in teh player profile with who is in the Youth/ REserve team and if possible a little information about the man of the match for when the youth/reserve temas play.

    STOP MODERATING MY POSTS! lol
Sometimes you get a little carried away, like everyone coming through seems to be a great talent. Also suggestions such as Jay Simpson and Paul Rodgers have a future in Music/Film if their football careers don’t work out, just because they appeared in Chip’s new video. Little things like that.

Great site though, just some minor improvements to make it look all the more profressional wouldn’t go a miss. Updates of the goals would be good, also appearances may also be a fine addition.

I really enjoy Young-Guns, its by far the most informative Arsenal reserves/youth blog. Match reports minutes after the game has finished, which is great also. One thing I think you could do at YG is make a videos page and link to videos. You could get someone that makes video compilations of players and showcase a video for the player of the month.

    6) It would be nice to include a Quick Stats page with simple text tables; i.e., “Who’s on Loan Where and for How Long,” “League Table,” “Current Roster,” and others. I know you can see the current roster through the profiles page but not everyone knows the players by sight so an additional text version would be a help.

On a more ambitious note, detailed player stats would be great, but as you might have to compile them yourselves (I don’t know if that information is gathered by anyone outside the team), that could be very difficult to include.

I agree on the player rankings with the game summaries idea mentioned above.

All in all, a good site.

    Thanks!

    6) Recent additions of player match ratings added greater depth in the match reports. The player profiles page needs reworking as if you don’t recognise the player, you have to look at the link to see who’s profile you are about to read. Maybe something should be added to the player of the month it should be changed to give it more purpose as it seems redundant that it hasn’t been updated past Jan. If possible, create some video compilations of players as it would add more excitement to the talented players you describe.

I would just like to say, What a brilliant site, you have introduced the likes of Wilshere, Lansbury, afobe, gibbs, murphy and many other top talents in the ranks that i didn’t even know about until i stumbled on to your site a year ago. Keep up the good work, and i am sure you can take your talent to the next level.

    6. I prefer to read the site via the RSS feed, and at first I thought the RSS site consisted of headlines and pictures only. It was only by accident that I found that if highlighted the page that the text would pop up. I still do so, but it is the one major annoyance I have with the service. Please find a way to provide article text in black, to make it legible.

    1. What do you make of our opening year?
    c) Good start, but work still to do

    2. What do you think of the look and feel of the site?
I don’t know which to put this under but the small white font on black can hurt to read.

    3. What do you think of the sections?
    b) I’d like a section which has the relevant League tables
    c) I’d like an information section about the club’s Reserves & Youth teams
    d) I’d like a new question & answer section

    4. What would you like to see more of?
    a) Player Profiles – More in depth information about the kids coming through – Specifically more detail about u16
    b) Interviews – More news on interviews with the staff and how the development/scouting works.

    5. What do you make of the accessibility?
It didn’t fit into any of but: in my google reader the text comes up the same colour as the background making it pointless having YG on there.

    6. Others comments I’d like to add to help Young Guns improve:- i think you often rush reports, it wouldn’t hurt for you to re-read them and think “hmmm, that’s a bit of awkward language” or “is that the right way of spelling that? i’ll look it up first” but generally everything is v. imformative and well presenting. Also, I think the idea of a podcast isn’t going to work, the arsecast doesn’t work and you’d have less to go on topic-wise than he does! Also, whoever said player ratings is right; take for example the hoopla when you said Wilshere went off form, your writing before didn’t really inform us of that before so it came as a surprise, individual player ratings would help you be more specific about tracking player progress. Remember this website is the way the majority of internet using Arsenal fans keep in touch with our youth, you are our eyes and ears, so helping track individual progress in players would be helpful. Love the site, and only hope to see it mature.

I think the opening year has been excellent the improvment to the site has been excellent in general however there are still a few small things I come across like if you hold the mouse over Jay Simpsons picture profile it reads Luke Freeman, to an outsider who doesnt know the players until they clicked on the picture and it linked to JaySimpson it would be confusing.

I would like to see current league tables and fixture sections for all the youth teams at the club.
I would also like to see some video interviews with the youth players find out more what they are about.
Another suggestion would be to get to know some of the other blog writers out there and get more links to your site added on theirs I read quite a few other blogs and dont see enough links to here would bring more readers more diverse views etc.
Overall I enjoy the site its a welcome break from many of the others.

Overall, the blog is a great and unique source for news about Arsenal. I would say that the RSS feed doesn’t format properly in a lot of readers, so you have to come to the site, which isn’t a huge deal, but figured I’d note it since you are asking for feedback.

i think it’s a decent site, i personally enjoy it because there are very few sites out there who can give us this level of information. i do think you are just giving the basic reports of the matches and training sessions which is good but the whole purpose of this is that we are famed for our academy and we want to know who you think will be the next stars etc.

however, to be updating on a regular basis is hard work so i commend you, well done Jay!!!!

    6. Their could be more detail in terms of training updates, and a spot to see scorers/assist leaders but also a “top 4” recap of the u16, u18 & reserve leagues would be a good reference. But who knows how close you are Sanderson, I would like to see a bi-weekly podcast, if you could get the interviews with the youth set up and/or dialogue with other knowledgeable arsenal supporters to fill such a spot.

A table of statistics for the separate age groups would be good. Currently, a lot of information is scattered about, some organised way to display them would make this site much better.

6 – Adding a lil more red pattern to the current skin wil giv the site a better Arsenal effect.
Player ratings after each match wud be good, as it wud help the readers assess player performance levels.
It wud be also nice if u could add the goal links in match reports, as most of us dont get the opportunity to watch the youth/reserves match.

But overall great work for the first year :-)
    Keep it up YoungGuns

6-Re question 4, my answer B was based on all the negative comments by people on this site that know someone who knows one of our “teenagers” and says they did this and they did that… It would be good to get it from the horse’s mouth and know what these guys are going through in their quest to become an Arsenal player. Would be very interesting reading !!!
Otherwise J this is a fantastic site. Good luck for the next year.

The thing I want to see the most at this site is a live news feed on youth and reserve games. Kind of like the one that the BBC and Sky Sports do on match days. So essentially we’d have a dedicated page that would be updated live every couple of minutes detailing the events of the match. I realise this could be a lot of work but in my opinion it would provide a service that no other site provides. Just an idea.
I think that player ratings at the end of games would be very informative.
Also more links to goals would be very much appreciated but I realise that, that may not be in your power to influence.
Great job. Keep up the good work.

Great match analysis in terms of speed of posting and details of the match but would like to see players rating as well.

Maybe every week highlight one particular player and let us know about him. It would be nice to get an interview from him.

Statistic table, including goal, assist and all important stat.

    More pictures please.

long time reader (even before you started this new blog!) but usually I don’t comment but thought some feedback would help you!

    1) C
    2) stuck between B and C
    3) B
    4) B (it’s always nice to read what YOU think of the player but getting to read what THEY actually say is a really cool feature you could try to implement)
    5) C
    6) You actually have made great strides in your writing since you first started. However, I’m very meticulous with anything I read or write so I could maybe sound harsh but looking over what you type shouldn’t take more than a few minutes and would let you catch several errors that you make. I understand you are not a professional writer and are basically a kid my age, but even so, if you wish to truly be taken seriously, proofreading makes a world of a difference in how people view you and how seriously they take you. I would not mind being a “beta tester” and proofing things for you if needed either.
Also, I like your little player infos you give but I can’t help but feel that all of them are too positive (something I’ve read in comments by other readers as well). Yes we love the Arsenal and we think the world of our kids but not every kid in the academy is a Jack Wilshire (hell right now Jack Wilshire is not Jack Wilshire). Giving some more negatives let’s us lower our expectations a little, and although that sounds terrible to say, it makes us criticize those same players less when the time comes for them to prove themselves in the summer or during the Carling Cup.
But overall, you do a pretty good job considering you’re just a teenager. And take this as some good criticism – I bet even Arseblogger had a rough first year too and now look at him!
Best of luck in the future JS!

    6. Very good site overall, in my opinion even better than Arsenal.com for getting info about the youths and reserves. I like the effort and commitment you put in to getting the latest information, sites like these have done a good job at getting more fans excited and supportive about the talent that’s coming through.

    6) I think that knowing the personality of the younger players will help fans know abit more about them and the fans are always interested in the other side of the players. I Think there should be regular interviews with the young ones as they are still teenagers and could have a funny story’s to tell. =]

For someone out country, this site is the site to go to get to know the young guns and their progress. Good job!
    Improvements:
I don’t know if you personally watch the matches but some match analysis would be great.Would love to learn more other than goal scored.Don’t be afraid to criticize players, the seniors do play badly sometimes so its fair game. The point being bout too positives are as the season progresses, we hear Player A has moved on to another club due to lack of progress.
Anyway.. great site! great dedication! great job!

6/ Definitely should have the tables for the reserves & youth teams. Also, more links to goals, particularly for the young kids on loan & how they’re performing. But on the whole, fantastic site. Don’t know how i managed before i found it!

There is often a spelling mistake or another mistake in your articles, it isn’t a huge problem but if they were corrected it would make the site feel that bit more professional. And perhaps a breakdown of goals and appearances for the youth and reserves teams seperatley

The speed of filing copy, the reliable daily updates and the thoroughness of the content have made this one of the two Arsenal blogs I regularly read – well done. I’d like to have the names of players in the main page text – including in the top scorers’ chart – hyperlinked to their profiles with further links to recent stories that they have featured in. Apart from that, it’s excellent.

    6) It’s a very useful sight, and rather unique, well done, but maybe a more objective view on some of the players is needed. All over Arsenal.com etc, the player profiles overly glorify the players. It would be nice ot have a more genuine, honestly frank opinion on their abilities, without being harsh of course!

Doing a great job though. I only read one other blog, most of them are written by the kind of people who think football is as it is in the ‘Football Manager’ games, and write through Red and White glasses, its nice to see a fresh perspective on the game.

    1. C — Very good start. Hard to say perfect to anything, but I’m really pleased with this site.

    2. C — The dark background with lightened lettering isn’t ideal for reading. Don’t know what the thinking was behind that choice, but more than adding nothing to the cosmetic appeal or practical accessibility of the site, it’s actually annoying because it’s not as easy to read as the normal Black on White set-up.

    3. C and D would be a good addition

    4. A. more player profile info. Also, a one-time feature articla on what the life a kid in the Arsenal Youth Academy is like.

    6. Fantastic site. On my regular rotation. Check the site at least a couple of times a week. JS you do a great job of keeping the site updated. The only constructive criticism I have is that I would like you to put a bit more detail into what in particular certain players are good or bad at. Perhaps instead of saying he is a great prospect go into a bit more detail as why you think that (ie blistering pace, strong on ball, great shot etc). A minor thing but could add value to your journalistic qualities. Keep up the good work I am loving this site especially with all the bright young talent coming thru the ranks.

Fantastic site. Check it often. Just a few ideas. Maybe some pictures/videos on player profiles, a rating system. other news hyperlinked to their profiles with further links to recent stories that they’ve featured in. Also try the auto-refresh into the comment system like on Arseblog. Or maybe a chat link in the menu list where it’d lead us to live chat!. Sounds abit to much for wordpress.

And maybe members can have a Profile? not sure if possible on wordpress, but yeah. I love the black and white. Red and white is used on almost every Arsenal-related site. Since you’re the only guy who writes articles on your site, how about letting fans write articles?. You don’t have to post them all, but the ones you think that are worthy deserve a chance. I know it’s not really part of the young-guns theme but, how about a weekly fans newsletter, you can either answer our questions or we can send pictures of ourselves either at games or with players?

Oh and ways for us to do our player ratings in a poll and it’s averaged and then displayed. That would give an accurate idea probably of how good our guns were rather than what some of the idiot commenters say. That might be a stupid idea but it would be neat.
