Arsenal 'Agree' To Premier League Quota

Arsenal are believed to be one of a ‘majority’ of Premier League clubs who have sanctioned new proposed homegrown player squad quotas – meaning clubs must have eight homegrown players in their squads of 25.

The new proposals are seen as a replacement to the UEFA idea of ‘6+5’, and would come into effect ahead of the 2010-2011 campaign. English clubs – in particular the ‘big four’ are thought to be delighted with the ideas as it is almost identical to the current Champions League requirements.

It also hurdles E.U employment & discrimination laws, as homegrown players do not have to be English or even British, they must only be trained by the club. However, PL chief executive Richard Scudamore admits he is worried by the lack of English talent coming through despite a prosperous season for youngsters in the Premiership.

“There is a leap at 18, when clubs decide if it is worth retaining a player or to buy one ready-made. Clubs see scope for doing something to ensure we are bringing homegrown talent through.”

Arsenal have also been supportive of League ideas and Arsene Wenger himself has frequently spoken of his commitment to helping English talent coming through. Jack Wilshere, Mark Randall and Kieran Gibbs have all benefited for previous rules to increase the substitutes bench size and many more youngsters will do in the future.

A meeting in the coming months will decide the outcome of the plans, but with most clubs happy to implement the proposals, it seems a matter of when not if. Your views are welcome below.

JS will henri lansbury go on loan to a premeriship club next season? I cant believe he rejected a premiership and a championship loan offer. henri is too good for league 1 and the championship. Him and aaron ramsey are probably the british young central midfielders

I think the Premiership is really starting to look at youth development properly. The likes of Man City (although I guess this is out the door), Everton, Villa, Arsenal, West Ham and Utd all are showing that given a proper education and an opportunity, young British players are not a dying commodity but, lol, the future. Think of what will be the next England team – your Rodwells, Wilsheres, Ablongahors, Richards’ (I know he’s been off form this season but he’ll get better) etc. – these are potentially world class players teams get for free just by being smart about youth training and playing time.

Hopefully the likes of Spurs, Wigan, Fulham, lolcastle, Liverpool etc. can learn that you can make yourselves great by proper planning and training, instead of throwing money around looking like a cheap whore and make the league an even more exciting place.

Because in reality, we have not spent that much more on our youths than anywhere else. Moving to London Colney was to benefit the whole club and if you look down the leagues at yr Cardiffs and Palaces and Leeds, you are seeing potentially class players come from places where they do not have Premiership money to invest. In Wilshere we have a player that is talked about in the same reverance as Bojan and many other incredibly exciting youngsters. Even the ones who won’t make it will make us a generous amount of cash in sales to reinvest. And what is the difference between our youth set up and that of say Stokes? World class coaching methods and proper planning – neither which costs too much. The Premiership could fill itself with homegrown superstars to be talked about with the same reverence of say Spain in the eighties or Italy in the nineties for at lot less than they are spending now on overpriced foreign rubbish and have a lot left over to just add stars to their team from around the globe.

These plans might be a step in the right direction, but only if teams open their eyes to the possibilities available.

Also, whatever happened to Barazite? The fact that I haven’t heard his name in months presumably means he’s not good enough to make a name for himself in the Championship, let alone at our level and be sold, right?

I heard over the past few months that Barazite was doing pretty well at Derby but wasn’t always getting starts. And also Derby isn’t too good, still don’t know how they got up the Premier league.

Lansbury will probably go back out on loan next year, but I would hold fire yet because Randall is certainly going on loan and Henri may be kept as CC back up.

As for Barazite, he’s doing very very well, he’ll be in the first team next year for sure.

In actual fact Arsene Wenger is totally against the introduction of quota systems. He has expressed that view in lots of interviews he has done over the years.

I’d prefer to see players like Barazite loaned (again) out rather than just sitting on the bench and never playing during our first team games (they may not even get into the squad because we may possibly have all our players fully fit next season, well…maybe) because they’re not quite ready to play for a club the stature of Arsenal. Just look at what happened to Randall this season, I think he’d have been much more motivated if he had gone out on loan again. Merida needs to try and play for a Championship club as well because there’s no way he’s going straight into the team.

It’d be much better if they were playing regularly at Championship or even League One level (Lansbury ensured he’d get playing time by going to a League One club, hopefully this doesn’t mean he’s too impatient in terms of playing time, otherwise he’ll end up at another club) because it’s more competitive and of a much higher standard than Reserves football. I was disappointed with Barazite’s comments about trying to get into the Arsenal first team this year, quite frankly, it’s not gonna happen, so why not try and improve even more by going on loan to another club? (I do accept that sometimes players feel more stable and secure at one club though)

Wenger will not be taking barazite, Lansbury,Randall or Thomas into the first squad next season all of the above will be loaned out again in a higher league. For example Lansbury may go to a championship side having already tested himself in League 1.
Barazite could move up to a low level premier league side for more intense experience
Rrandall & Thomas would be wise to take a leaf out of Barazite’s & Lansbury’s book. The most important thing is to get heaps of game time not to sit on the bench of a better team.
Djourou.Bentdner and Song have also improved for taking the loan route.

what we need is our own team in the Football League, a nursery side. Perhaps they shouldn’t be allowed in the cup competitions and not be allowed promotion. Could be the way forward. Used to happen in Spain, not sure if they still do it. Arsenal tried this by buying into Leyton Orient in the 50’s. Got kicked into touch by the league.

Nice comments by Samuel. By the way Sanderson I’d appreciate your doing an interview with Henri Lansbury, he’s my favourite reserve. I believe he’s the type who could make a quick break into the first team.

Samuel – As we face Liverpool in the FA Youth Cup final, my guess is that they have been looking at youth development for quite a while.

I am also not sure about your claims about teams would rather spend out on foreign ‘rubbish’ then develop youth. What you seem to be missing is the fact that English ‘rubbish’ is eye-wateringly expensive when compared like for like with their foreign counterparts. As for youth development, it is actually very expensive both to set up and run. If you look at every plyer who goes through our system less then one in twenty actually make it with us and about 3 or 4 are sold and go on to other prem clubs. The others (economically) just fade to nothing. If you collectively add up all their ‘smaller’ wages that amounts to at least one good wage for an established player who can help the team here and now.

I am all for youth development, however, some club’s priority is survival and it is a bit glib to suggest all teams should follow the youth development line Arsenal takes.

wondrinfree: yeah, my bad. I meant all rubbish. You presume the amount Spurs spent on a Bentley or a [insert other shit signing name here] then they could have a class youth system. Also, if you look at our current youngsters, it’s not just 1 in 20 is it? I can name 5 who will definitely make the first team squad, players that can do more than help the team here and now. Look at West Ham – they don’t pay much to these youngsters compared to the players they’ve signed in the past five years, and yet the likes of Collison are essential to their success this season. Add Sears, Tompkins and a couple others in there and they have built a strong squad around youth development for realitvely little.

You have to notice I am talking about clubs that have been mostly midtable (ish) in the Premiership for the past ten years. But you know what? Looking at the massive mistakes teams fighting for Premiership survival have made these past couple seasons (West Brom’s most exciting signing? Ummm.. Marek Cech, a full back now lost in the reserves; lol Derby are now in the shit spending ridiculous amounts on Savage and co etc.) – quite frankly I don’t see how wisely investing that Premiership money in the future of your team, better training facilities, coachs, youth coaches etc.

I read an article not so long ago (I think it was for The Times) where they interviewed the famous Arsenal back four. Putting aside that 1 1/2 of it was made of the Arsenal academy (1/2 being Keown, who was second choice/replaced Bould) – these were not the greatest players when they were bought, didn’t have great technique and hell, were quite drunk and unfit. You know what they said made them so great? Great, hard coaching and smart tactical work. (I’m so glad we have Bould teaching the kids.) Investment in this and careful planning and development, especially at a relatively young age would dramatically improve these teams we watch on motd every week and think ‘fucking hell, you spent £60m to get torn apart again?’

(My bad on mentioning Liverpool. I was just working off them not blooding in a youth since Gerrard and even now they seem more likely to buy a N’Gog or Lucas than play an academy prospect.)

Ill explain to you a little bit about liverpools youth, since Ive been keeping an eye here since I knew we were getting you in the final.
For years, it has been a flawed system. Since Benitez came the system has been improving, and yet has improvements to make. We have claimed the youth cup twice since Benitez arrived, but from the first of those youth cups, the players have been moved on. Their win in the youth cup was based more on team tactics then team skills. The next year, it was the same. Lindfield, our star striker back then, has been exposed down at accrinton stanley – he is not good enough for liverpool.

On the other hand, there are other youth prospects starting to knock from those youth cups, the most prominent being Jay Spearing, Adam Hammil, Paul Anderson. We did have Jack Hobbs among those, but he was sold to Leicester. I’m pretty confident well see him in the premiership soon. They’re approaching the age they should be knocking on the Liverpool first team door. I’m confident they can make the grade.

So I wouldn’t have a problem with these new rules. And we wont in the future either. Our youth team you’re facing in the final has no shortage on skill. Should be a hell of a two legs.

Spaz most our youth team is english and has a great spirit. We seem to have the ability to score goals as well as defend well. We beat Man city three thimes who have not lost to any team apart from arsenal. We got two brilliant CB luke ayling and kyle bartley who are quality players. Our two CM are frimpong and coquelin who are like two mini michael essiens they are very powerful, strong, and can tackle. And our striker force is lethal, rhys muprhy one of the best english strikers. Sunu, watt, afobe and freeman are highly rated by england.

then it’ll be a good game. i hear man city are tough, they slaughtered us earlier this season, but we had an off day. we have an extremely attacking edge to our side. the defence was naive at time at the beginnign of the season, now it is much improved. centre backs: kennedy and ayala, kennedy the tough tackler, ayala the attacking centre back. wing backs are irwin and buchtmann, irwin who in more then a few eyes is a future stevie g, buchtmann, pretty much the main reason england under 17’s got butchered by germany a week back. central midfield pairing will be pepper and someone else i think. pepper is agressive and pushes forward whenever he can. hell probably be backed by wisdom, who is a bulldozer with skills.

its the attack you should be most scared of. id expect a line up of: ecclestone, dalla valle in attack, amoo, and then ince. ince has great vision, can play anywhere in the attacking half of the pitch, can take free kicks and makes excellent movements.
then you have ecclestone, who can score from anywhere, as well as being strong and fast.

but the deadliest of them is the pairing of dalla valla and amoo.
if you take one piece of advice be it this NEVER leave amoo one on one with a full back. hes horrifically fast and strong, has all the tricks to go with it, can cross, head the ball, and shoot. he is simply hell bent on beating his man and making something of the ball. he tormented chelsea, and with dalla valle he ripped birmingham apart. if there is one player i would back to take this tie by the balls, it would be him. but then, any of them could. honestly.

then you have dalla valle. he is a fantastic striker.

I have heard all about afobe, and my mate used to love murphy of footie manager :p and then theres wilshere, who everyone in the country knows about by now.
so yeah, should be an alright tie :P
but i might miss it which would be really crap :S

I have heard alot of david amoo. Our full backs are not the fastes. But they have defended well against wingers. I have heard alot of dalla valle but i am sure ayling and bartley will be too physical for him. Arsenal are pretty strong through the spine of the team and in attack they play just like the first team. They pass and move and we have some very skillful tricky pacy players like wilshere, watt, sunu, jay thomas, coquelin

Our Midfield is the main strength we have Wilshere, emmanuel-thomas Frimpong Coquelin Ozyakup IMO DEfence is very strong too. And with a midfield like that any striker would get goals. let alone rhys murphy or afobe.

i like this far more than the 6+5 rule. It will force clubs to build through their academy, or at least buy talent young. We do not have this problem, thankfully.

Oh and any more updates of Colquelin would be the bees knees. His play, lansburys grit and the sublime skill of Barazite all put a smile on my face.
