Profile & Pictures – Arsenal New Boy Martin Angha

Arsenal have completed the deal to sign FC Zürich defender Martin Angha-Lötscher, known simply as Martin Angha, yet the prospect is a relative unknown to many Gooners.  Young Guns has subsequently moved to help inform you of the in’s and outs of our latest acquisition with a player profile.

Born on the 22nd of January 1994 in Switzerland, Martin Angha joined the FC Zürich Academy as an 9 year old. He went on to develop through the ranks as a centre back before earning the rank of captain of the their Under 16’s.

Martin was soon included in the Swiss youth teams where he was again named skipper – once more at Under 16 level. Angha’s big break came during this seasons Nike Cup where he led his Zürich side all the way to glory against FC Luzern in front of watching scouts. The stopper described the Cup win as a ‘dream come true’.

Arsenal moved quickly and invited the whole Angha family to London where the 6ft powerhouse was shown around the stadium and training ground before being given VIP tickets to watch Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Stoke City. Clearly in awe of the Emirates Stadium, he was then given the opportunity to play on the surface when as the Under 16’s beat Chelsea 4-1 the next day.

After being taken to Anfield with the rest of the squad to watch the Gunners lift the F.A Youth Cup on Tuesday night, the prospect signed on the dotted line with a small amount of compensation changing hands between the two clubs.

So what will he bring?

Martin will bring a classy and composed style to Arsenal. He’s a strong leader and somebody blessed with pace, technical skills and strength in abundance – like any modern central defender. He will also weigh in with a handful of goals – and he’s very good at taking penalties (see above photo for proof).

He should start his career with Steve Gatting in the Under 16’s but he will hope to follow the example set by Ignasi Miquel who took the same route and finished the campaign playing in the Reserves.

So it’s a very warm welcome to Arsenal, Martin.

What about jamie edge? Is he going to play Central midfield? These are the type of signins the first team need to make we need a strong dominant centre half and strong holding midfielder.

    Hi J,
Thanks for all the info, sounds like another great prospect, hopefully he can fulfil his potential.
Just so you know, I think you meant “awe” instead of “oar”!

For all those who keep saying we need experienced defenders. This is not a first team signing. It is for the youth team. Why should we not carry on siging good young players? Its not as if AW will sign these kids and say ‘I am have done my tranfers for the summer’!! These are just for the youth team. The signings for the first are seperate and have yet to start.

JL: the ball is in the right hand side of the net, where the keeper is looking. On first glance I couldn’t see it either tho! well disguised

J., Do you know anything about Luc Castaignos? He looks like a good player, and has a similar playing style to Henry. What do you think the odds are we are in the market for him?

Sola. Here we go again. Another shitty, whining fan who doesn’t understand that buying for the youth setup is completely unrelated to the first team signings. If you are so against the youth-setup, why are you reading Young Guns?

I wonder how he will play next season. He probably could break into the U-18 already next season. He is a year younger than the likes of Afobe and Aneke and they did it this season. Those ahead of him are Nordveit, Hoyte, Bartley, Ayling, Miguel and possibly Boateng. Nordveit and Hoyte will probably be lonaed out or with the first team and Bartley could very well get lonaed out as well. But probably, at least for the first half of the season, we will see Bartley and Ayling continuing their partnership for the reserves. Miguel will be the main man for the U-18 and Angha and Boateng will fight it out for the place alongside him. Then if Miguel overcomes Ayling in the reserves, we could see Angha and Boateng playing together in the U-18.

That’s how I see it at least.

I would love to see how someone like Ayling would play in the carling cup. I have been really impressed with him. Hes 6ft 2 very good in the air, great compsure reads the game well and his two footed.

Yepp he’s a very quick right back.

Luc Castaignos is a very talented boy who I know for a fact is very close with Oguzhan Ozyakup. I don’t think he’ll be on his way here but I do believe we’ll sign an Under 17 striker this summer whether its Wellington or somebody else.
