Trialist Wellington Named In Flu's Pro Side

Arsenal trialist Wellington Silva is one of three Fluminense youngsters to have been called into the first team squad by manager Carlos Alberto Parreira, as the former World Cup winning boss attempts to fend off interest from several European clubs.

Several reports have emerged in recent weeks that the 16-year-old Brazilian Under 17 International has already signed a pre-contract to join the Gunners, but those reports are wide of the mark. Wellington impressed during a 7 day trial around Christmas time – he even played 45 minutes for the Under 16’s against Norwich – and he made an emphatic impression, scoring 4 goals.

The starlet, nicknamed Ciel, has quickly become one of the most sought after youngsters among European clubs. Real Madrid, Chelsea and Barcelona are among interested parties, while Manchester United are believed to have made inquiries recently. United scouts will know all about Wellington as he hammered one of the goals which saw Flu win the Nike Cup at Old Trafford last summer.

Brazilian journalists moved in to speak with the man of the moment after being invited to join in first team training, yet the usually shy youngster was very open – and appeared to look back on his time in London fondly. However, he admitted that the language barrier was a stumbling block.

“I was there on trial and I scored four goals in a friendly which helped Arsenal to win a match 7-0. I tried to speak English, but I couldn’t speak a word.”

There is now a strong possibility that Wellington may well be handed the chance to play for Fluminense’s first team as the Brazilian season is still on going. He was promoted along with 19-year-old Dalton – who is already an Under 20 International for his country. At just 16 to be handed such an opportunity is quite extraordinary and could be enough to sway his decision to look for pastures new.

It looks like he is being kept on at Fluminese now, and good luck to him. It def looks like we are in the hunt for a young striker though and with the Dutch Lad wanting to stay on at Feyernoord for another year (in a loan or staying capacity) I wonder what other options are left? What do you think J?

The simple answer is that nothing has been agreed – and this news basically means he’s being blood through the Fluminese system. They wouldn’t waste time on him if he was going to be sold.

That said – I still think there is a chance he will end up here – money talks. But still, I’d prefer Castaignos.

If we did sign either Wellington or Castaignos, would they be straight in the reserve team or would they be part of the under 18 set up at first?

They would be Under 16’s for a couple of games then Under 18’s and then maybe Reserves – but that’s not certain.

J, you prefer Castaignos? Lol. I am Dutch, and I am not even that impressed. Wellington sounds absolutely biblical, a 16 year old in the first team is something special. Luc Castaignos wil never do that. Not wil he ever bang 4 goals in against Norwich… he is not as good.

oh well he’s staying which is a shame really.very talented kid along with Coutinhio. But a good option would be to buy him and leave him there for a year or 2 & we can teach him english while he’s there (which is what we did with pedro)& then send him on a loan to a La Liga club.Otherwise he’s going to be snapped by the Spanish or Italian clubs. We need Denilson to tap him up for us:)if we sign Wellington its going to open the floodgates-it’l be easier to attract other young brazilians to Arsenal. Why don’t we open up some of those football schools in Brazil?

When did he come into the 1st team?how does he play against the senior teams-because theres obviously a difference playing kids ur own age & against grown men.is he fast?whats his attributes?any weaknesses? Imo the Wellington looks a top bracket player like a young ronaldhinio.

Castaignos is the same age. He plays for Feyenoord, who usually let every young kid debut at 16. Castaignos has not yet, nor will he. I do not rate him as highly as Wellington, especially as we have pace and power (Watt and Sunu) but no guile, no Brazilian style.

Haho – man utd have a got a strong foothold in the Brazilian market & are buying up all the best talent (possebon, dodo, the 2 silva’s) we need to get in there! Luc looks strong for his age & holds the ball up well (reminds me of simpson a bit!) but from what i’v seen he doesn’t have the x-factor which the brazilian kids have.

Players cant move to another continent until they are 18.Rumour is is that we have a definate 1st option to buy Wellington.
Yaya Sanogo is another striker that we are looking at!16 yrs old and plays for Auxerre.

Messi’s deal would not have been allowed now!His parents were given jobs in Barcelona so that they moved along with a young Lio who was i think 12 or 13 at the time.It was also stated that Messi needed growth treatment and that is why his parents moved????????????????Likely story but thats how Spanish clubs work.

Arsenal have agreed to sign FC Zurich starlet Martin Angha in January 2010, according to reports.

According to 20 Minuten, Arsenal first made contact with the 15-year-old defender in 2007 after he impressed scouts during a football tournament in London.

    Any news on this JS???

I think you are overlooking a few factors here. It’s essential for a player like Weelington to develop in Brazil, he still has a lot to learn in Brazil. I also think for Castaignos to move to Arsenal would be in terms of addaption an easier transition. I don’t know exactly about the rules but if I am right we have to wait 2 years before Wellington can play for us anyway.

I don’t know why you compare Castaignos to Watt and Sunu. Dutch players have always proven to be skillfull and from what I have seen from Luc I think he is very skillfull. He has some great potential and I think he eventually turn into a world class player.

I have heard a rumour that we are close to signing 2 Nigerian players a keeper and a fella who got man of the match recently against France. Apparantly Fabianski will go on loan for a year with Birmingham already having made enquiries. The Nigerian will be our No.2 and has been promised a fair crack of the whip with FA Cup and Carling Cup. Apparantly Mannone & Szeczney will also go on loan one for the for half of the season and the other for the 2nd half. Also Senderos & Djourou will be our 2 back up Centre Halfs next season with either Toure or Gallas or Silvestre or all 3 leaving and one or 2 coming in.The last piece i have heard is that Gilbert will be given the chance to be Sagna’s understudy should Eboue move as expected.

Does it really matter if we get this Brazilian kid Wellington or not, because if he no better than the likes of Benik Afobe or Zak Ansah there is really no point in trying to buy him is there? IMO.
