Danish Viasat Divisionen outfit Viborg F.F have announced they will trial Arsenal’s 17-year-old winger Jonas Rasmussen this week witha view to taking the Denmark Under 18 International back to his homeland.
The news comes as a shock as Jonas only signed a new three year deal at the start of the season but it seems the highly technical starlet would like to return home to restart his career after a frustrating campaign in the Under 18’s.
It was expected that Rasmussen would be a regular in Steve Bould’sUnder 18’s last term witha sprinkling of Reserve appearances, but in truth he’s struggled to even hold down a regular place for the Academy side despite being on professional forms. However, he did weigh in with two goals – his first and second for the club – but off field behavior problems have also marred his spell in London.
Now Viborg – who are currently 4th in the Danish 2nd division and have little hope of reaching the Superliga next year – confirmed on their official website that Jonas has joined in training and he should continue there until the end of the week.
The ‘De Grønne’s’ sporting director Steffen Højer admitted his club have been on the trial of the former HvidovreIF schoolboy since the Gunners snapped him up, but stressed the trial was a chance for both parties to have a look at each other.
“Ever since Jonas moved to Arsenal in the summer of 2007, we have had an eye on him because we would like to be there if Jonas ever got the urge to return to Denmark, and start a career here.”
“There is no doubt that when a great English club like Arsenal, agrees a contract with a young talent, the player has no doubt some potential. I could well imagine that Jonas Rasmussen will show the same value and talent that our own young Under 18’s stand for.”
“He is a young Danish Under 18 international who is hungry to be able to show Denmark what he can do on a football field. So we will obviously like to see him this week to assess whether it may be in Viborg FF, where he continues his football development.”
With several of the current Under 16’s successfully making the step up to Under 18 football last season, it appears that Liam Brady is willing to trim some of the older fringe players from the squad to help fit more of Gatting’s boys in for the 09-10 campaign.

To be honest hes a CM wwe have too many CM we need to cut down on CM and buys some proper wingers. But the problem the new crop of under 16s most of them are CM meade, aneke, webb, rees. Only monkana seems a genuine winger and some kid called alban but aparet from that we just have so much CM and strikers.
Jernade Meade is a winger as well mate. But I think the youth cup win shoed we don’t really need wingers so much.
YH i know JS but what happnes when our passing game does not work we dont really have people who can run with the ball create space for others. we seem to be having an Ac Milan formation the diamond formation with wilshere behind the stikers.
Its good but some times u need to change the way u play u cant just pass pass, we need players who be more direct
The problem with arsene wenger is that we have so many promising central midfielders coming throuhg he then buys denilson, ramsey so the likes of randall, merida dont get a chance. Everytime soemone seems to be coming through wenger buys another player in that position. And the worrying thing these kids will it hard to break through cause the arsenal team is quite young and not really old. So for example u cant see someone like lansbury replacing denilson.
what do you make of the obertan rumors……il like this guy him and adi upfront could be lethal……vp needs to go or play on the wing…..i hope it happens……is it just pie, wat u think son…
Of course but we’ve got some wingers. Sanchez Watt for example, it’s not like we’ve got none.
I like Obertan as well, but I don’t think he’ll be coming. Arsene Wenger has other areas to spend his money on and a winger/forward would be low on his list.

-Denilson was originally bought as a reserve the same way Merida was. He worked hard and made it to the first team. But our buying since a couple years ago has changed. Look at Arshavin: he was specifically bought in with the knowledge that when his contract ends, Wilshere will be at a proper age for the team. This is what we are most likely looking at this summer as well – an older CB until one of our promising young cup winners are old enough etc. Ramsey was bought because by the time Cesc eventually leaves (albeit due to homeland pull and not due to age), he will be one of the best in the world and a fine replacement.
I don’t see why you act like this. I’m not trying to be rude here but if Randall isn’t going to be a superstar but Ramsey is, I’d much prefer us to buy him and not give Randall a chance only to sell him on. The difference between giving Ramsey and Randall a chance could be the difference between a world class team and an average one. I know which one I want to support.
And it’s not like these players aren’t going to get the chance IF THEIR GOOD ENOUGH. Gibbs proves that. The fact that some people who are surprisingly not stupid still think Wilshere could make the World Cup team the same way Theo did. You’d have to say there are definitely 3 or 4 players in that FA Youth Cup team that should make the first team squad at least, and with Afobe and co. even more that will get a chance.
Wenger has proved that if he thinks you’ll eventually be good enough, you’ll be given the chance and his patience at Arsenal. But look at the examples: say you think Frimpong is going to be a great DM. Good, I hope he will be for us. But he was what, 13 when we bought Song? As much as Arsenal (and Arsenal fans) obsess over the future, you cannot put all your faith in future, as the here and now is still very important. If Frimpong turns out better than Song – great! But he’ll at least be testing himself against someone who’d be starting to peak (and learning from him) instead of the rubbish Muamba or whoever because we didn’t take an eye off the ball currently being kicked.
Great points Samuel. Its all about whether they’re good enough. Jonas really has not impressed since he’s been here and his off field actions have not helped him.
The same applies to Anton Blackwood.
The youngsters around the 16’s age level or younger are looking to step up and could be better, so it’s understandable. Shame on the lad, hope he has a great career. Nice pic, too. (Serious).
Like we bought coquelin dont get me wrong hes a fantastic player but he gets in front of someone like conor henderson. Both CM at the same age.
john: Yes, but this is the Arsenal we support! I expect fantastic, world class players as should every supporter of such a prestigous club. Unfortunately, we have forfeited our ability to fight in the transfer market with the likes of City and Real (supposedly going to announce Kaka for 60+ this week) for long term investment (i.e. the stadium and training ground etc.). So if our world class players, in the majority, come 20 and under, fine.
That point is more a disclaimer more than anything, it doesn’t strictly apply to your point, so here I go:
a) Considering how lauded our new academy system is, Henderson is currently being given a footballing education that is the envy of every footballer in the world who didn’t grow up in Catalonia. We are not by any means destroying the careers of these footballers: any youngster who joined the club after 2001 or whenever the new London Colney was opened is going to be the envy of the majority of clubs in Europe if they work hard.
b) There is no reason to say that buying Coquelin stops Henderson getting a chance. Look at Utd – Macheda and Welbeck have been given a position in which the boss gives ample opportunities to whoever works hardest in training to prove themselves; passports or transfer fees don’t matter. If we have 2 promising players instead of 1, and they both have a mentality to stay and fight to come out best – it can benefit us but also them. Determination is an essential quality in footballers, just look at Gerrard.
c) I don’t mean to be rude but I think your line of questioning is a little naive. Why buy anyone? If football just consisted of players made from team’s academies, it’d be a radically different game. Maybe watching Barcelona this season has made us ultimate idealists but as good as any academy can be, it’s never going to be the end all of true great football. That said, when UEFA eventually figures out some way to impose a system with less foreigners in it, we are going to be leagues ahead of anyone else when we refuse to sell City our next Wilsheres and Afobes unless its for £150m each :)
There is nothing wrong in buying more than one young player for the same position. Many young players show promise at an early age, but may not continue to progress at the same pace or may stall/plateau at an insufficient skill level . They may be shifted and tried in another position. Wenger is a great one for doing that. They may develop inflated ideas of their own skills and value (e.g. Bentley and Pennant). Competition is healthy. It keeps you hungry and encourages maximum effort.
When you buy these young players, you are buying promise and potential, not certified first team players. You can’t place too much faith and hope in immature and untested players. The step up to the first team is a big one and not all our prospects will be up to the challenge. However, if there is one thing Arsene has shown it is that if you are good enough he will give you a chance, regardless of age and pedigree.
Barry gone for 12 million pounds :( personally I would`ve expected more for the guy but at least now wenger can`t say that he was “priced out of the deal”
not much of a comfort though…
John, Coquelin is a DM and Henderson is an AM so they are not in direct competition and as Samuel has pointed out, even if they were competition is a good thing as it makes the players work harder and means that the club get the best out of them.
Samuel- .your either a dickhead or very naive. If overseas players are paid to come over and compete with homegrown players who is the coach gonna pick if their vying for the same spot. Coquelin or Henderson / Murphy or Sunu. Problem is Rasmussen ,Fonte and the vast majority of bought in academy players arent better than the homegrown( Hale End )u18-u16s crop so when they find that their on the bench or not playing theyre obviously pissed with the coaches that promised them playing time. Without Bartley (900k),Sunu (1mill) and Coquelin (250k upwards) the U18s would still have been a successful team but would probably not win the double. Rasmussen for now is very poor whoever scouted him and needs spec savers bcos there are better players in my local 5th form school.
But what i am saying is that i dont foreign players to get ahead of english players. Thats all.
But what if the foreign player is proven to be better than the english player? Would you still play the englishman ahead of the foreigner? I don’t think so. Fact is, if you are able to find someone better in a position than its current competitors, it is most likely that the new guy, whether foreign or not will be brought in to play ahead of the current player, which is a good move.
Well, Coquelin is much superior to Henderson from the games that I’ve seen so far. If Henderson was better, he would have been on the fringe of the first team like JET, Wilshire, and Lansbury. I’m not saying he won’t make it but he’ll need to up his game.
Sunu was highly rated when he arrived, but was actually behind Murphy in the pecking order at the start of this season and was said to have wanted to go back to France due to lack of playing time. However, Murphy’s injury opened up an opportunity and he grabbed it with both hands, scoring a hat-trick after coming on as a sub. Just shows that we do not discriminate based on price tags or nationalities (Murphy starting ahead of Sunu) but if you work hard and grab your opportunities, then you’ll get a chance as well (Sunu).
Yep good point, who wouldn’t want Sidwell and Muamba in the team instead of Fabregas and Denilson?? Isaiah Rankin (recently released by the mighty Crawley Town) in the 98 team instead of Anelka?? I could go on..
Name just one English player who hasn’t got a chance here during Wengers reign that you’d like in the team now, go on, I’ll wait..
It’s called competition, get over it. If they aren’t up for the competition, then they aren’t good enough anyway.
Interesting that the argument that a foreign player is going to get more oportunities than an English player was raised in the comments section of an article about a foreign player leaving due to lack of chances…
I know that this isn`t the place, but what about that brazilian midfielder Patrik, who was qualified for the special talent visa, and Tresor Mputu who reportedly excelled during his trial and then there were no signs of him whatsoever …
ME: Mputu’s and Patrik’s trials were last summer – I think we can safely say they aren’t coming.
Klose: No need for name calling. Young players move all the time, it is not a guarantee of playing especially at a club like ours. While assumption dictates that ‘i’ve spent more money on this player so i should play him more than the one i haven’t’ – we have smarter coaches than that and talent is put first. Denilson was better than Muamba so he stayed. E-Thomas is better than Rasmussen, so the Dane left. Talent and commitment dictates who comes out on top in youth football.
Also: remember that we spend hardly anything (if at all some years) on transfers so it’s not the same as ‘We’ve spent all of our revenue on him, we’ve got to play him’.
When is Wenger going to invest in a striker. That’s what the team needs.. Score Goals..Defense is important but if you can’t score all you end up with is a bunch of nil-nil draws. One point is cool but three points are better. Bobby Gee. World Cup coming up I can’t wait..Bobby Gee Thanks for reading. http://bobbygee.wordpress.com/
SHUT UP BOBBY GEE OUR DEFENCE IS CLEARLY WORSE THAN OUT ATTACK YOU ABSOLUTE BELLEND
bobbygee: We have a lot of strikers already mate. What we really need now is defensive covers.
