Nigel Clough is hoping Arsène Wenger will give Mark Randall permission to join up with Derby County on Tuesday as the Rams travel to Devon on a mini pre-season tour.
Having started and played 45 minutes against Barnet on Saturday afternoon, Mark is in line to feature for a Reserves & Youth XI as the Gunners travel to Lincolnshire for their second friendly in three days in the form of Lincoln City. The classy central midfielder could then be thrust into action tomorrow as Derby face Yeovil, before clashes with Torquay United on Thursday and then Exeter City on Saturday.
“We are just waiting for confirmation from Arsenal that he can come on the trip.”
“Hopefully, he can meet up with us on Tuesday. If he does, he will play in two of the three games, probably Tuesday and Saturday, with a view to a loan – maybe to January or for the whole season.”
Whatever the opinion on Randall, Wenger remains a huge fan of the central midfielder, especially after his performances in Arsenal’s Carling Cup run last season. Derby’s offer of a trial is not based on Mark’s talent, on the contrary, Clough just wants to examine the former Northampton Town trainees suitability to life with the Rams.
“The idea is to bring in somebody different from what we have got.”
“Next week will be ideal to have a look at him. There is no point coming training, as you can only see a certain amount in training but this way we can see him in games.”
The 10 appearances made for Burnley in 2008 stand Randall in good stead should he make the return to Championship football next term. Whatever happens, it promises to be a ‘make or break’ campaign for the 19-year-old.

Good for him – last seasons few opportunities didnt do the world for his development. Will be good to see how he handles his temper in the championsship scrap.
J – Will you post the travelling squad for Austria – will be exciting to see which youngsters made it.
Good player. Not good enough for Arsenal. We have merida, landsbury, ramsey to name but a few before him. Let him go
I personally do not highly rate Randall. I do not think he will make it at Arsenal. Think it’s time to cash in on him so he can start to mature as a player. He needs regular playing time for a championship side and we are currently holding him back. How much do you think his value would be J?
Sirwenger – I don’t have the squad mate. A Reserves and Youth XI is playing Lincoln City tonight to we’ll be building up to that a little later on.
I would imagine it may affect the amount of youngsters going to Austria. The Austrian squad will have Eduardo, Nasri, Senderos in it and the majority of the first team.
Armand Traore should also be in there.
For Randall? he’s gotta be worth at least a million, if not a little more. Probably something like £1 million rising to 1.5.
Yea £1m-£1.5m sounds about right. He’s 19 years old already and doesn’t show any signs of making it in the first team in the next couple of years, so best to get rid
There’s no point getting rid now. He’s still only 19. Hopefully he’ll go out on loan and then AW can assess him at the end of the loan spell.
@ harry. The guy doesn’t show the technical ability to make it at Arsenal. You can tell what players have a chance at First team action and does who would go on to play for Championship sides. Randall on saturday was all over the joint. His tackling was horrible and his game play is nothing special. Wilshire, Ramsey, Ayling, Barazite, these players have a good chance to break into the first team. I personally do not think Jay Simpson would make it at Arsenal either. He’ll likely to be sold next season for around £3m.
Morning J, Any ideas who scored in the Plymouth match? I see we beat them 6-0 behind closed doors at colney
Jamie, do you have info on this match. http://www.pafc.co.uk/page/YouthNews/0,,10364~1727327,00.html
Looks like some of the youngsters played a youth friendly at London Colney this weekend

@ KingKolo. I agree with you on the whole that on Saturday he didn’t look too special but it was his first game of the season and a preseason game at that. The players are bound to be rusty. The problem with Randall for me doesn’t seem to be his technical ability, which I believe is Arsenal standard, but his attitude. Too often last yr in the reserves he seemed to wander through games but importantly he seemed to step it up for the CC games. He also needs to address his tackling as he seems to get hot-headed too often. But I don’t think we should abandon him just yet. As I said before, a loan will do him good so he can get out of his comfort zone and then hopefully we’ll get a change in his mentality if he has to fight for a place in a team week-in week-out.
Claude – I’ll write a report in the next day or so.
News keeps pouring in – http://youngguns.wordpress.com/2009/07/20/nordtveit-in-germany-ahead-of-nurnberg-move/
I’d expect Arsene to handle Randall’s situation as he did Bentley’s and Muamba’s. Give him a loan away – if he shines, give him a chance at Arsenal; if not, let him go with a large sell-on clause in the contract.
He seems a fairly good player to me, his technical ability is certainly good enough, but the problem is that he’s similar to Denilson and Fabregas, both of whom are only a few years older than him, but I think he’d do well if he did go on loan to Derby.
He is to good to sell at 19 i much prefer him to other young midfielders at arsenal who people rave about
Far better he goes out on loan or is sold. He is going backwards in his development. It must be difficult for him as he has been around for a while and not really pushed on, and for my mind there are a number of more technically gifted players ahead of him. He is one who could develop and I think this will only happen if he gets game time, if Wenger thinks he is good, sell him and put a clause in his contract to say we would get first refusal if he is sold again.
I’ve been a big fan of the kid since i saw him play for the U13’s against Reading in 2003. He was head & shoulders above anyone else on the park that day, his presences, tackling & passing marked him out as one to keep an eye on. He hasn’t really stepped up to the plate in the last year or 2, i think it was Liam Brady who said confidence is his biggest problem. If he can sort that out, he can be a big asset to us in the future.
I think a season @ Deby will suit him, see how he performs there & then make a decision next summer as to whether he stays or goes.
i think this season is Randalls last chance.he needs to impress with Derby otherwise he’s a goner. However Clough must see something in him to take him on?
