Lincoln City V Arsenal XI – Friendly – Preview

After 118 years, Arsenal have made the trek to Lincolnshire ahead of this evening’s pre-season friendly with League Two Lincoln City – who will face a Reserves and Youth XI at Sincil Bank.

In 1891 around 3,500 fans saw the mighty Imps beat Woolwich Arsenal 3-1 in Plumstead. 118 years on, a similar score-line is on the cards tonight, but this time for the visitors who will boast a squad of the finest young players in World football. A much larger crowd, closer to Sincil Bank’s 10,127 capacity is expected.

Arsenal have taken an extremely young squad up North. Infact it’s so young a handful of the names are yet to break into the Under 18’s on a full time basis never mind the Reserves. However, in front two Nacer Barazite and Jay Simpson there is experience and talent in abundance.

Nine of the squad played under Arsène Wenger at Barnet on Saturday, including Sanchez Watt who started. There is a first chance to look at Sean McDermott, who joined us this summer from IK Vag, whilst newly signed scholars Ignasi Miquel, Danny Boateng and Oğuzhan Özyakup make up an exciting line up.

Predicted Starting XI

Shea
Obed – Ayling – Miquel – Cruise
Sunu – Coquelin – Thomas – Watt
Barazite – Simpson

Subs: McDermott, Boateng, Özyakup, Henderson, Freeman.

Kick off is at 19:30 hours UK time. A small number of tickets may be available on the gate while there there is no live coverage on Arsenal TV Online. Young Guns’ Match Report will be published on the full time whistle and there may be Player Ratings to follow. Please leave a comment if you would like Player Ratings.

The boys left for Austria today, so none of these have been chosen. I believe Frimpong has gone.

I’m really surprised at the squad! There is no Frimpong who I doubt has gone to Austria, Afobe doesnt seem to be included either and this must be the end of Jay Simpsons Arsenal hopes for this season at least as he hasnt flown with the first team. What do you take from the squad, J?

WTF, wot a joke that Simpson and Barazite are not goin to Austria. Outrageous. Felt Watt showed enough against Barnet to warrant a place as well. Shows that the Barnet game has no relevance whatsoever to who goes to Austria! That was probs decided weeks ago.

Just becouse they are not chosen to go to Austria doesn’t mean wenger don’t rate this players highly. There is more matches to play for during preseason Maybe wenger wants the first team members to play as much as possible and barazite, watt and ayling won’t have a chance to play that much? He can’t bring top talents becouse of ONE game! Preseason is mainly for the first team to get in shape. Our youths will get chances to prove themselves during the season and during the Emirates cup. Also frimpong, eastmond and wilshere have been chosen to travel along with the squad. Maybe there isn’t room enough for all of our youths? I don’t know how big the squad to Austria will be but it seems big enough.

Remember, the primary purpose of the Austria trip is to get the players who may feature in the first team this season fitter. Maybe Arsene’s been talking to clubs with regard to the loan/sale of Barazite and Simpson, although I’m not sure why Coquelin and JET haven’t gone.

I am shocked Barazite and Simpson aren’t in Austria (unless they fly straight out after this game off course). It seems highly surprising that these two attacking players who have not only done well recently in terms of performances/loans/relative experience wouldn’t make the trip, especially with the departure of Adebayor. However, that said, we do have a wealth of talent up front the in the first team. I think there is a good chance these two will be loaned to Premiership teams next year as Simpsons’s loan to WBA was highly fruitful.

I think the player ratings & individual comments are great I know it’d be hopelessley subjective, but it’d be interesting if you could maintain them throughout the season and then review what each player got on average when all’s said and done. Great blog otherwise.

Yep Nouble was at West Ham’s training ground today.

ATVO is not showing the game tonight, although there is an audio stream on Lincoln’s website but youmust sign up.

The number of strikers we have at first team level, reserve and youth is so high, I really don’t think another one is required. Frank Nouble can go to West Ham. We have Van Persie, Bendtner, Eduardo, Walcott, Vela, Sunu, Murphy, Freeman, Simpson, Barazite, Ofebe, Watt… Trust me….unless this guy is exceptional we don’t need another striker. They will simply go out on loan or be sold after a few testing seasons. I’ve watched him a few times and he is no better than most of our youth.

The main intent of the Austrian camp is to prepare the first team for the upcoming season, hence it will be the first team squad who flies off with the addition of a few reserves. Aside the players featuring against Lincoln, it looks like Frimpong, Randall, Merida and maybe Lansbury. And let’s face it, those are clearly the high profile reserves and not Simpson and Barazite, who went out on loan.

Randall??? High profile???? How old is he?? 21?? Ramsey is 17 and it is quality that is important, not age. Randall is not good enough. End of story. Arsene wants a better look at midfielders as that is the position we may buy still e.g. Inler.

Goon u really r a goon. Players develop at different ages. Look at david villa, drogba they are late developers. Thats why u cant judge young players

John, don’t forget Arshavin – nobody was interested in taking him away from Zenit until he was 27! He hasn’ turned out to be bad has he?!

Looking at the young players obviously Gibbs and wilshere are considered first team players, Randall looks like he’s joining up with Derby this week, Frimpong was selected with the senior players on Saturday ahead of JET and Coquelin and I know Watt was as well but that’s because we didn’t have any senior strikers available, eastmond may have gone to Austria to cover at full back, barazite and simposon could be staying behind because they’re about to go out on loan and others who would have been selected like Lansbury, Hoyte, Murphy and Merida are on international duty. I’m not sure about bartley, what exactly does on stanby mean, does he train with England or can he still play in pre-season games.

You never know, Wenger may have asked some of the players to play against Lincoln and then join up in Austria tonight or in the morning.

we DO have quite a few outstanding players amongst our youth, but it has to be said, Randall is pants – a flurry of bookings waiting to happen and generally clueless on the ball, imo…

    we lead 1:0, btw…

I’m not saying Randall is a bad player. He is gifted and clearly has talent, however, I do wonder why he hasn’t had the same exposure to first team football as someone like Ramsey. Yes he may be a late developer, but can we really hold onto someone for 4/5 years to see them develop. I guess we could keep loaning them out.

All I am saying is considering we often play a passer and someone who breaks up play alongside, could you ever see Randall performing that role ahead of Fabregas, Ramsey, Denilson ??
