Arsenal striker Carlos Vela was one of the star players as Mexico lifted their record 5th CONCACAF Gold Cup with a devastating 5 goal second half performance. Mexico played the hosts USA in front of a capacity 78,000 fans and the El Tri contingent were not left disappointed.
Carlos didn’t start the game, but as with the semi-final, the game came to life when he was subbed on. After a fairly even first 45, Aguirre obviously decided that the young Arsenal man was needed and on he came for Medina.
On 50 Minutes Vela got his first significant slice of the action, collecting the ball after a corner and crossing only for it to be cleared on the 6 yard line. But Mexico kept on coming and soon started to batter down the US’ normally watertight defence, and when Dos Santos was downed in the area, Torrado stepped up to put El Tri ahead.
From this point Mexico took complete control, and Vela had an effort saved before turning provider seconds later. The young striker was given far too much space and was able to run into the area before pulling it back to Sabah. While the tournament Top Scorer’s effort was saved, Dos Santos finished easily on the rebound.
And 5 minutes later, Vela had his goal. Giovanni Dos Santos, one of the best players of the afternoon, found his teammate and Carlos chipped the ball over the oncoming keeper with consummate ease. It seems the cheeky chip is somewhat of a trademark for Carlito!
Mexico and Carlos continued going from strength to strength, and in the 79th min Vela’s delightful through ball found Castro who slotted home. Late on in the match, Vela was involved in a more distasteful incident as Heaps was sent-off for a lunge on him, luckily Carlos was ok and if anything, this is just a sign of how frustrated the United States were getting with his quick feet. And Mexico continued to add insult to injury, with Franco scoring their fifth from outside the area!
So with one goal and two assists, Vela must be one of the contenders for Man of the Match. The official CONCACAF site called bringing on Vela a “masterstroke” and described Carlos himself as “sensational” and, along with Dos Santos, “a cut above the rest”.
While Vela must be thinking about what could have been if he’d played throughout the competition, Arsenal fans will be ecstatic to see a fit Vela coming back from the tournament and also to observe the devastating impact he can make from the sub bench.

Hang about, I thought C-Vel was injured!!
Cant we be our main striker, given the opportunity this guy is a messi in the making,
any vdeos for Velas goal assists
Saw this match! Carlos was amazing! Keep it up boy!
I watched the 2nd half. He was great! The commentators were praising him as well. Mexico seemed to come alive when he was subbed in. Him and Dos Santos really went to work!
Nope, stay locked to Young Guns mate and you’ll get all the updates :)
Videos coming soon.
Highlights added :)
vela totally raped the us defense. he is going to be huge at arsenal.
Vela isn’t ready to be our main striker, but I can see him having a big impact if we’re to do well this year.
Vela will Play a big role. Especially until Nasri returns. I don’t think he’s physically mature enough for a full English campaign yet but this kid will one day be truly world class.
um, did anyone notice that this is the US’s 2nd string squad, with their 3rd/4th string keeper? Not one of their starters played today and it was for the Gold Cup, which does not give the winner of it admission to the Confederations Cup. Put this game in perspective. Go Gunners.
he can be our henry. he has the pace and power but also the technical skills and finishing ability. Just an amazing player.
As great a talent though he is, I hope he doesn’t get too much game time on the left. He is very week defensively, and doesn’t track back at all. It’s not his fault, that’s not his game, but it leaves Clichy very exposed and inhibits his chances at running down the left. It’s the same with Walcott on the right, which is why Sagna struggled last season, Hleb was defensively capable.
Guv: you are correct in that he’s an out and out striker that had to play either in a midfield that includes three good defenders or up top in a 442.
Peter: regardless of the opposition you have to have class to see the opportunities, technical quality to capitalize on them and composure to score goals. He’s a special player and was clearly the best player on that field.
Umm peter did u not notice this was also Mexico’s b team as well?!Typical u.s fan making excuses for this 5-0 beating..
Cant wait til Vela get’s back home with Arsenal and get’s integrated with the team again..

I agree with Peter this was the US d team and Vela only scored because of that, had it been the A team he wouldve been a ghost and did nothing..Hopefully Arsene watched this game and saw that Vela only play’s good against d team/Carling cup ect..What we need is some American player’s in the squad and then Arsenal will truly be contender’s for lifting the title this season..
Vela was the best player on the pitch fast, composed and deadly with the dribble, pass and shot . Totally changed the game for Mexico. Replacing Ade with a new striker just inhibits Velas development. I think its time he gets some minutes to prove himself.
Ooh Vela Vela! Congrats!
ha ha, a little angry ArseneKnows? The fact that the US put out a weak team (more B minus or C plus, than B) doesn’t take away from Vela’s performance.
He was clearly the best player on the pitch and is clearly Mexico’s best player, Period. He was thrilling to watch today.
Peter is exactly right. I was at the match today and saying this was the US’s B-squad would even be generous. Bradley used this tournament to see who his B-squad might be. Mexico on the other hand brought pretty much their full squad. They acted like they won the World Cup (throwing beer on people and a ridiculous number of fights in the first half in my section alone). What they seemed not to realize is that we beat Spain and then sent our 2nd/3rd string team to play in a tournament which they obviously took very seriously. In the last two Gold Cups, when the US sent their first team, we won both. The only good thing about the afternoon was getting to see Vela live for the first time.
And USArsenal4Life, your comments make me wonder what sport you’re watching. Yes, it was not our first team, but we’ve all seen Carlos do those things in La Liga and also against a PL side in the Carling Cup. Just like a great player should, Vela took advantage of an under-strength US midfield/defence though I must say that Chad Marshall was brilliant in the first half. Mexico got a dodgy penalty and then got two more quick goals both off counterattacks as the US threw everything forward. Mexico only started to look really good and create anything on the ground after they went up 3-nil.
Know whats funny why fans use exuses why they lost..but let me break it down we have a b team mexico,US was badass lastweek and talkin shit
how they was gonna beat mexico and vela?!
now they lost and the exuces?!
I’m an American, but there has never been a US player good enough for Arsenal…c’mon. Maybe Gooch, but he’s looked a little shaky in his first few matches with Milan. Who else? Donavan? Altidore? Please.
natsteel: be fair, Mexico was bossing the game as soon as the 2nd half started. it was infuriating but I was mollified by the fact it was down to Vela. He was class.
c´mon, mexico also played with their B team, (Rafa Marquez BARZA, Carlos Salcido and Maza Rodriguez PSV, Ricardo Osorio STUTG, Moreno AZALKMA, Guardado CORUÑA, Nery Castillo SHAKTAR and some other players of the 1° mexican league… Vela played very nice, but watch out that giovanny dos santos was the best, aproach it because he is young and he plays now in the 2° premier liegue with the IPSWI
“Mexico on the other hand brought pretty much their full squad”
Hmmmm not really, yes, they brought more “A” players, but only 3-4 players from todays game will play against USA “A” next month
Marquez,Salcido,Osorio,Pardo,Blanco,Guardado are going to play that Game, probably even Perez (Ochoa is better than him, but Aguirre likes Oscar Perez)
From todays game, probably Just Torrado, Gio and Guille will Start Against USA
the usa did put in their b-team but that dosent take away how carlos destroyed them!!!! vela is class, and it was a joy to watch him play today.
dirty mexicans cant play right gonna be dirty…play fair we scould win
!!
Second string or not US was beaten by Mexico 5-0. If d players were not good enough they wouldn’t b playing for d national team and dey wouldn’t be in d national team. Vela has a gold cup trophy to his name now, congratulations to him.
I am also a American that is a sore lose
vela score.lets get real america conroys u
fags

What’s the geographical size of USA as compared to Mexico! For every one team Mexico have, USA should have atleast 10 teams. Vela is a good player, whatever your excuses
i AM ALSO AMERAN CAN dONAVAN SCORE ON ME?
iM WITH THE AMERICANS JACK WHISHER COULDNT SCORE ON THEM !!
I too am also a US National team fan, and I don’t think anybody from the US has the capability to play for Arsenal, Mexico in the other hand have a handfull of young players that will grow up to be stars(C. Vela and G. dos Santos, G. Ochoa, O. Arellano, ect.). I think that with Vela under the wing of A. Wenger and R. van Persie he will become an outstanding player, maybe like Hugo Sanchez.
Mexico’s team wasn’t the first team either, both the U.S. and Mexico went to the tournament with alternative teams, Mexico dominated the entire second half and the U.S. team was overwhelmed by Vela’s and Dos Santos excellent performances, seeing both playing together its wonderful they know each other perfectly and together they were able to end with the U.S. team, Vela is going to be a great player if wegner gives him more minutes. He is still not a starter though, but definately he is class
Im also a american we couldnt stop Dos Sontos!!!!!from the SPRUS!!!!!!!!!!but we have Vela thank god!!Oh what Im no mexican but still them dirty fuckers they hit the queen!!!get mad london!!
please Arsene get rid of this mexican we dont need them we need americans on our team to win!
I hate Vela I hope and wish he doesnt wear the beloveled arsenal shirt ,hes a dirty player like dogdreah..the sooner we get rid of him the better
Okubule Demolu, perhaps you didn’t read what I wrote or even worse didn’t watch the match. Because the US had just competed in the Confederations’ Cup only 2 weeks before the Gold Cup, in which we beat Spain, it was impossible for anyone in that team to play in the Gold Cup a week after returning from a long tournament in South Africa. No one who made the trip to South Africa was even on the roster for the Gold Cup. The entire team was made up of fringe players who even at their best would likely be taking up the last 3 spots on the national team’s main roster. It came down to priorities and playing Brazil twice, Italy, and Spain was far more important than playing Honduras, Panama, and Mexico. The game was very important to Mexico but not at all to the USMNT.
Run, there is no doubt that Vela helped to change the match but the dodgy penalty and then the counterattack goals effectively ended the game at 3-nil. Anything after that hardly matters.
Also, if Altidore continues to progress, he could end up being good enough to play at Arsenal.
Some superb coverage as usual J.Sanderson, hopefully Vela could take Walcott’s old role as a supersub. That was one of the things missing last season, our bench was terrible. Bendtner popped up with a few goals but he didn’t make an impact like Walcott two seasons ago.
P.S. is the Gold Cup the official American tournament like Euro Championships, or is this a friendly pre-season international tournament?
I see him as a striker and only a striker. Left wing – nah!
He is like an inexperienced, and worse version of Messi, but he still has a lot of talent. Little lobs are turning into his trademark.
For all the racist, Vela is a good player it doesnt matter if he is mexican or southamerican, african… yesterday he did a great team with Dos Santos, both show why they won the word cup in the 2005 with Mexico!!! And maybe some people dont want Vela in the Arsenal, but think about why he is there with the guns!!!
Great performance by Mexico agianst USA C squad. Vela should help once the seaosn starts. Thanks Bobby Gee
http://bobbygee.wordpress.com/
The Gold Cup is in fact like the Euro Tournament BUT since CONCACAF is the weakest of the confederations Mexico and the U.S. always compete with their B teams and the COPA AMERICA where Mexico is always “invited” is exactly like the Euro Tournament where Brasil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and the other important american teams
The Americans here are funny, explaining that it was the “C” version of the US NT. Well, Mexico’s wasn’t the A team either. I would say that the squads of both teams had as many first squad players. The truth is, Vela absolutely raped the US defence since he came on. I would love to sign Dos Santos for Arsenal just as I would love to sign Sessegnon.
Yeah man I vote for Gio dos santos with Arsenal… with Vela WOW..
Both have 20 years…
C-Vela C-Blanco G-2Santos a romper redes!!! hell yeah!
It was great to see Vela turning the heat ON. Great game a fit Vela at his best is the best thing for us, Gunners will be top of the leagues this season :)
