Arsenal Poised To Cancel Salamanca Partnership

Arsenal are set to cancel their partnership with Spanish Segunda outfit UD Salamanca and explore alternative routes following the treatment of Brazillian wing-back Pedro Botelho last season.

The 19-year-old is currently spending the final year of his loan spell with former link side Celta Vigo, after several arguments erupted due to Botelho’s behavior. However, whilst the youngster has admitted he made mistakes, assistant manager Fran Albert has been accused of black mailing Pedro into handing over money after his partners car was broken into. Arsenal Official Richard Law was furious to learn of this, and immediately withdrew the player.

The Gunners have been considering their options over the summer and with no players being sent to the Union over the transfer window, the writing is on the wall. Indeed, Arsenal have previously shown their ruthless side with link clubs as Celta discovered over the Carlos Vela fiasco. After promising they would loan the Mexican, they signed too many non E.U players and were unable to add Vela to their ranks. Yet now Arsenal may rekindle that relationship which was initially setup by David Dein, as they now boast Salamanca’s Sporting Director Miguel Torrecilla – a man who is close to Arsène Wenger.

The coming weeks should see further talks and meetings between both parties, but it seems the treatment of both Håvard Nordtveit and the aforementioned Botelho will prompt Arsenal to call time on the arrangement.

When Arsenal signed Cesc and Fran they hadn’t signed a professional contract with Barcelona. Thus, they were not poached..

fair enough in my opinion. especially the nordtveit saga and seeing how he is performing in germany, and did in norway. as I understand it was important for the next level of the partnership for salamanca to be promoted, cant remember which official in arsenal said this, this is a much greater chance now with a big club like celta

Arsenal do things by the book that’s why. Remember what Gillingham’s chairman said when we signed Freeman ‘We’re sad to see Luke go, but Arsenal have been brilliant’.

There is a certain way to conduct business and Arsenal do not subscibe to bullying clubs out of players. Look at Coquelin for example, we signed him and Laval could do nothing, but we donated £100,000 to help further their Academy.

John: Are you kidding? Rummeniggee called out Wenger by name as a child trafficer (sp?) last year! Platini has often pointed to our ‘experiment’ as the catalyst for young and talent footballers being pinch from across the globe. The difference is we have (at least post-Merida) always tried to be respectful to the selling club at all levels. Look at Coquelin, we paid £2m in part for the player but also as a sign of respect and to help them with money to improve their training facilities. Lyon reportly only offered a quarter for young Le Coq. That’s not to say such a gentlemans agreement doesn’t also benefit us, if they have another exciting youngster, it’s likely they would want to deal with us again.

In response to the article, it seems absurd that Salamanca should act in such a way. Knowing the special class of player we are looking for, they could have felt the incredible benefits considering Richard Law said that the only scale of player we now look at is ‘can be as good as Kaka’.

It should also be seen that we try and conduct transfer matters for first team players in the correct manner as well. Especially after being burned by Cole and Hleb (as well as a certain ol’ manager taking bungs), we know the detrimental effect of going through agents and under the table to both teams. Plus, the effect of being honest and respectful can be very helpful in paying the correct price, especially when you look at Berbatov or the Chelsea team or Ronaldo or Lescott and you have to figure that they are paying above the odds in part because of the atrocious way they have acted.

Coquelin was 100,000 wasnt he? Giles sunu was 2.5 million.

Platini beef with arsenal is that we have no English players coming through. He wants to see teams who have a percentage of “Home grown2 players.

But now there are lots of English youngsters coming through.

BTW JS who do you think is the next to break through? I think henri lansbury is the next hes a superb player the funny thing is i always thought he would break through before wilshere and gibbs but injuires and illness have disrupted that

J do you belive that maybe the reason we haven’t signed wellington is because we were looking for a partnership with a club in spain first?

Sad about Salamanca … We should send them over to Colorado Rapids , I actually live in Colorado, and they would see playing time, get really fit and be playing at a higher level of football.
    PS:
Im English , not American, just living here as my parents work here.

TheCritic: what won’t work, American footballers are all athletes first and for young players fighting on a pitch against the burliest and biggest players who have only an inkling of talent, it is not a good preperation… maybe for a Championship future, but not for the PL. Let them go to Spain, lower PL teams or indeed the Bundesliga (not Italy, they play anti-football) Or play at a top Dutch or Belgian team, and then weekly.

The Critic, it would be nice if it was not for the spanish passport after two years for those from southern america. I believe france have easier rules for citizenship for people from former coolonized countries as well. Belgium is three year etc., like Beveren, dont know so well the others. Otherwise Colorado would be a good option. Having someone with in european quota rather than the non-european is of too much of a benefit

Though if you send them to Colorado they will not be able to gain US residency within 3 years, which is the point in sending them to Spain where it took just 3 years to gain Spanish nationality, and hence able to bypass work permit problems. This will not be solved by sending them to a team outside Europe.

I never understood why we were with Salamanca in the first place. Surely we should find a struggling club in La Liga instead of Segunda. If these kids are really that good then they will shine at the top level, and if they aren’t then letting them go becomes an easier decision…..

Arsenal has got to produce home players. Relying too much on foreigners at the expense of the locals isn’t fair. Take Lansbury. Hes an English player who has to take the long route because we poach molded foreigners. Let the foreigners join at age 18. But before that keep it British! Mind you I’m Kenyan.

Kenyan: It shouldn’t be a case of either/or. Discrimination on account of nationality is as stupid as any other type of discrimination. We are attempting to create English superstars and the way Capello talks about us, and how the English team’s future seems dependant on Wilshere, on Gibbs etc. shows that we are not neglecting English players. And seeing Watt be chosen over Barazite in pre-season shows that ‘poach molded foreigners’ do not get an automatic advantage. But if we act sensibly and in the best interests of Arsenal, the selling club and the player (and those around him who need to be taken care of, i.e. family situation at a young age) and in a above-board manner – why should we not be trying to find the next Kaka, Eto’o, Buffon, Messi or Cannavaro?

The thing is that our coachs don’t look at passport when deciding who to sign, keep on, or let go. This can only be good for the long when it comes to the quality that english players have when they come through.

TheCritic – I’ve always been curious mate….is there really a place in Colorado called South Park? :)

Just finished watching England u21’s draw 1-1 with Greece u21’s. Pearce’s tactics are simply awful (hey Sharpovic, you out there mate? :))

JW and KG both played the full 90 and JW was head and shoulders above everyone else in an England shirt in an attacking sense. Almost scored an absolute beauty too.

Very dull game and in the end, England were lucky to get away with the draw.

TJ , to be honest , I have no idea, my parents are missionary’s so i am off in other countries a lot of the time,

Sebjob, Stan Kreonke is the majority owner in CR, so he would see it as an window to build up a better relationship with arsenal, there club is pretty good, improving fast and I would put it at a sort of play-off championship to just stayed in the prem’ club football, players like Murphy , Eastmond , Szczesny, Hoyte , Randall, could benefit,as they all have competition for places and would like to prove themselves to wenger, and all would not have VISA problems,
