Arsenal V West Brom – Carling Cup – Match Preview

t’s that time of year again when Arsenal fans eagerly await the youngsters on show at the Emirates and if any of the previous seasons are anything to go by they never disappoint!

Last season’s 6-0 romp of Sheffield United was a superb example of Arsenal’s young guns and hopefully tonights clash with West Brom will bring another promising display from Arsenal’s younger generation.

However Roberto Di Matteo’s side will certainly provide a big test for Arsenal. Sitting at the top of the Championship, undefeated and confidence extremely high after a 5-0 away win against title challengers Middlesbrough, West Brom will certainly believe they can nick a result against Wenger’s protege’s.

As for Arsenal’s team news, the Carling Cup often brings some surprises and the starting line up is anyone’s guess, yet Wenger has already stated some of the players that will be featuring in the game;

“You will see Wojciech Szczesny, Ramsey, Gibbs, Wilshere and certainly Vela,” said Wenger. “Traore will play.

“Some experienced players will guide the team like Senderos and Silvestre. But overall it will be a very, very young team as usual.”

Silvestre and Senderos will be making their first appearance of the season, whilst other fringe first teamers Traore, Ramsey, Wilshere, Gibbs and Vela will also start. Szczesny will be making his debut and it is likely that Gilbert will be making his first first-team appearance since February 2006.

Coquelin, Sunu and Merida are all on international duty, whilst Frimpong has only just returned from injury and it may be a little too soon for him to feature. This opens up possible debuts for Murphy, Eastmond, Deacon, Freeman and Watt who have all impressed early in the season for both reserves and U18s. Not all will feature but one or two may claim a memorable debut. Walcott, Arshavin and Rosicky could be possible first team faces as they are all in need of playing time but with Wenger not mentioning them in his press conference it is likely they will be rested.

The Carling Cup always brings a wave of interest and hopefully Arsenal young guns will once again be able to show the rest of the world what their really made of!

Predicted Starting XI

Szczesny
Gilbert – Senderos –  Silvestre – Gibbs
Wilshere – Ramsey – Randall – Traore
Watt – Vela

Subs…. Shea, Bartley, Murphy, Deacon, Barazite, Eastmond, Freeman

Predicted score….. Arsenal 2-1 West Brom

Arsenal TV will be showing this fixture but only after the full-time whistle. However, if you check back at full time Young Guns will have a full Match Report ready – with player ratings and analysis to follow tomorrow.

we will see a 4-3-3 formation, that is guaranteed, as it is now played throughout the arsenal academy and reserves.

I agree with the lineup though, Only that Traore is moved up as a forward.

Isn’t this being shown on Setanta something or other tonight? To be honest I’m a little suprised Randall is still being given chances to impress, this should be his last season unless he gets with the programme soon.. I’m assuming Lansbury is either injured or with U-20 national squad? Also Gilbert’s performance will be interesting to watch, hopefully the loan spells have paid dividends..

Setanta has folded mate, they don’t exsist anymore.

As far as I know no UK based channels are streaming it. Also – Henri Lansbury is on loan at Watford so he cannot play anyway.

Are you sure Coquelin and Sunu are on international duty? France didn’t qualify for the u-20 world cup.
I think it’s a shame Bendtner is not being considered for the game, we look a little light offensively.

Coquelin and Sunu are away with France Under 19’s. Gavin Hoyte is with the Under 20’s.

West Brom will try but from what I have read the Gunners should take care of business without a hitch.

Setanta has only folded in the UK J., here in the States we still have it (as they do in Ireland) and it’s great because most of the Arsenal matches are on it! Don’t forget you have an international readership and fanbase (even if Ade has a pop at us, we American gooners are Arsenal Til We Die as well…)

Got a feeling we’re gonna lose tonight… I cant help but feel that we are underestimating a very strong, in form West Brom side.

So Murphy didn’t got the chance.. that is too bad and i hope he he will be loaned out. This is not good for his confident. But Watt, Sunu and Vela is class anyway. I’m gonna put Barazite in LW instead of Traore.

And I guess the older players will play ahead of our fantastic youngsters. The only two I can see playing is Watt and Coquelin.

    Szczesny
    Gilbert-Senderos-Silvestre-Gibbs
    Randall-Coquelin
    Watt-Ramsey-Wilshere
    Vela

Very hard to predict a team, and I’m not sure if Coquelin will get a chance. He is very good but still very young.

I almost agree with Jom’s prediction but feel that Ramsey could occupy a more defensive role and allow barazite to play instead of Randall, possibly even as the lone striker or right wing with vela on the wing. Traore may also play instead of Watt IMO.

Coquelin is a very physical player, not the biggest but is a battler and Ramsey is a strong lad, he has filled out a lot over the past year

I think the key descison tonight is whether Wilshere plays as part of the midfield three or front three. I favour the latter – A midfield three of Coquelin, Randall and Ramsey would have enough defensive capacity to allow for attacking front three of Wilshire, Vela and Barazite. Coquelin and Randall being holding players while Ramsey is allowed to roam box-to-box and cause havoc through the middle. Traore will probably play instead of Barazite though and if Wilshire plays as part of the midfield Watt will be up front.

I’m glad to see Kerrea Gilbert in the squad. I can barely remember him apart from he looks like 50 Cent.

I guess Chippy is just returning from injury? There is no other reason why Sunu starts over Vela. Also what does Barazite have to do to catch a break?

would’ve loved to see vela, but frankly it’s his own damn fault for getting a cortizone shot on a twisted ankle during internationals. dumb ass.

What is the point of playing Silvestre. I guess it’s experience at the back but he’s so bad now that I don’t think he even deserves to make this team. I would rather see Bartley gain experience.

SG7: Good! I always like to hear about young English Arsenal players well. Randall hasn’t had the greatest time in the past year but he must still be at the club for a reason.

If they struggled then it’s a shame but added professional experience adds up at this age and let’s hope they can learn from it. No need for us fans to have more to say than that.
