Football is without doubt a global medium. It can be used as a means to break down barriers such as different languages, cultures and bring people together from different walks off life to build communities. The Homeless World Cup is a shining example of this.
Held in Milan later this month, the Homeless World Cup is an organization working to change the lives of homeless people across the world. They are given the opportunity to make friends, develop and build their self esteem by representing their country on a global stage. They can also take advantage of programmes which will enable them to find housing, work and counselling for any problems they may have. For a whole month they can feel like a superstar.
This year 48 teams will take part – a far cry from the 18 who competed in 2003. Players will be provided with hotels in which to stay and mini games off 4-5 a-side will eventually see a winner crowned. The charity initially started as a means just to help homeless people to get off the street but soon grew into a means of helping their personal development through football.
Throughout the year homeless people are in projects and through playing football they can get selected to perform in the centre of the city. Lots of people come and watch and the people who may have been on the bottom rung of society months earlier are singing their national anthem and feeling proud. Obviously to run such a project vast sums of money is needed.
You can do your bit to help by buying a t-shirt from SoccerPro.com. Revenue from T-shirt purchases will be donated to the Homeless World Cup as long as you get your order in before September 30th. For a look at the item, to order or to learn more about the foundation – Click Here.
