Wenger Confirms Eight Of His Starting XI For WBA

Arsène Wenger has confirmed eight of the eleven names he will field against West Brom in the Carling Cup tomorrow evening. The competition is frequently used as a chance to play some of the younger players in the Frenchman’s squad and this year looks like being no different.

Speaking to Arsenal TV Online this morning, Wenger revealed a handful of the names that will face the Baggies at the Emirates Stadium.

“You will see Wojciech Szczęsny, [Aaron] Ramsey, [Kieran] Gibbs, [Jack] Wilshere and certainly [Carlos] Vela. [Armand] Traoré will also play”.

The boss has a larger squad that last year so there will be some older players in the XI. They will be in defence in the form of potential captain Philippe Senderos and 32-year-old Mikaël Silvestre.

“Some experienced players will guide the team like Senderos and Silvestre. But overall it will be a very, very young team as usual.”

The bench has not been revealed yet but already there has been a few surprises hinted at. The full squad should be announced tomorrow.

I’m not sure Traore will start. He said he “will play” so maybe on as a sub?

I’d like to see Barazite and Merida getting a start.

Any news to whether Walcott is back from injury?

    AM SO EXCITED.

    So…

    Chesney
    Gilbert Senderos Silvestre Gibbs
    Ramsey Randall Coquelin
    Wilshere Vela Traore

is the most obvious XI, right? Maybe swap Coquelin for Sanchez or Barazite.

Bench, imo: Mannone, Ayling, Bartley, Frimpong, Rosicky, Barazite, Watt.

Is Fran Merida playing in the U20 world cup? It seems whenever he is about to get some playing time, there is always some other tournie he has to go play in.

am also curious to see gilbert if he plays. seemed for a while like he wasn’t going to make it. if he’s playing, it will surely mean he’s close to the first team. after sagna and eboue, what cover have we got for RB if not him?

i noticed that many people are including randall in their team.what i could not get is a player who isn’t good for a championship side, how can be he good for team like arsenal.
i would like to see diaby,it will do wonders for his confidence

hopefully randall won’t be in. I see:

    gilbert SLY Senderos traore
ramsey coquelin gibbs (who’s actually a midfielder)
    wilshire watt vela.

that’s a damn fast front three. Still, WBA is actually a really decent squad. they’re a tough 1st fixture for the kids. should be interesting.

Being ‘dropped’ to the Carling Cup team would probably harm Diabys confidence if anything.

I’m looking forward to seeing Ramsey and Barazite and hopefully another cheeky Vela chip

kat, surpriseed to see you naming gibbs in midfield, with the 433 would that not mean a more central role? exciting squad you have picked, am all curious and without knowledge on the level gilbert is holding now if he has made some steps up that would be exciting though there have been questions about attitude before. I can see Traore on left wing and gibbs on left back myself, Watt starting would be very exciting never seen him play only read. Why did Wenger not mention Merida?

maybe we could see traore in gibbs as the role of sagna and eboue last season, changing between midfield and back with the one covering as the other goes up

Ahhh Merida, how many damned games do the Spanish U20 side play.. He seems to spend 6 months of the year playing for them. It definitely puts him at a disadvantage as these chances to show himself at the top level don’t come along often. Imagine if we go out tomorrow, that’ll probably be his chance gone for the season, asve perhaps in some dead rubber Champions league game.

Theo is going to play plenty of games for the first team. Rosicky, you’d think would be different but quite frankly, he seems be being treated like he’s just been out for a month or two.

Randall is being named because he was in the team last year and often on the league bench, even making it on a couple of times. Most may not rate him but he was given a big contract by the club and he’s been on the verge of a genuine first team place for a while so Wenger and co. obviously see something we don’t in training.

Off point i know but i was at a wedding on the weekend where i was suprised to meet Andy Ansah, father of Zak. I believe him to be a good judge of a player having met and seen play the likes of messi and Ronaldinho. He said the best player he has seen is Ronaldinho in his prime (hes seen everyone by the way). Anyway i asked him about Arsenal and about Luke Freeman who comes from my area when he said that Luke will not make it at arsenal as he is too 1 dimensional and basically can only score. Hes also a judge on wayne rooneys street striker so can be argued that he can spot talent.

g4eva: van nistelrooy and inzaghi are “too 1 dimensional and basically can only score” – and guess what? they are possibly the two most effective strikers of the past decade. Considering we have 5 strikers in the immediate first team under 26 and enough promising young strikers you need both hands to count them, of course not all are going to make it. But let’s let the guy who was essential in Thierry Henry’s development figure that out, yeah? Nice scoop though. :)

(Also, Ronaldinho in his prime – still no Zidane or Bergkamp imo. And the rate Messi’s going, he’s looking like he may already be breaking into the TOP TEN PLAYERS EVER, next stop breaking up the accepted idea of who the two greatest Argentinians of all time are (di Stefano and fatty). Ronaldinho doesn’t even make it into a list of the five best Brazilians.)

Remember Arturo Lupoli a couple of year ago. He was going to be the best U18 striker we had. A lot of people said that he was even better than Bentdner. Where is he now?
I also do not believe that Luke Freeman will make it at Arsenal.
Luke Freeman’s problem is that he is the old school of goal scorer who hangs in the penalty box but does not participate to the rest of play.
Unfortunately Arsenal under Arsene Wenger expect more from their striker.
Ultimately Arsene Wenger either get rid of those players (Francis Jeffers, …) or try to expand their registre.
I do not believe that Luke Freeman can expand his play. He does not have the physic to play upfront on his own. He is not tricky enough or pacy enough to play as midfield player or winger.

I would have place Gibbs as a LW and Traore as a LB. Or Gibbs in a holding midfield roll. I am pretty sure Traore will not make it at Arsenal. Sunu, barazite, vela, watt, wilshere, ramsey, merida, cruise and a few more is way better as LW than Traore. Traore got pace and tecnique but sadly he is not intelligent enough for our team. Yes, he might develops to a world class player at age 25 but that is too long for Arsenal. You will have to break into the squad when you are 21-22 becouse we have so many promising players coming through right now. He lacks vision and develop too slow.

Coquelin is something special !! he is fast, intelligent, a great passer and tackler. should break into the first team next few years as he will be a home grown player! Wilshire 1 goal 1 assist tonight. Rosicky should start for fitness maybe arshavin on bench just in case a cameo is required!

Ok, maybe I shouldn’t have been as specific as to say north London. If it was 3 months ago, my living situation was close enough to go see it, but now I’d have to get on at least 4 trains to get there and by the time the game ended, transport back would be even harder as the night winds in. It would cost about £50 and being an unemployed graduate fucked over by the rest of the country borrowing what they couldn’t afford to pay back or running their companies irresponsibly and wanting to save my money so I hopefully am fiscally able to enjoy life (and the Arsenal) sensibly in the future, I am declining to do anything other than hope a stream pops up somewhere illegally obtained off the atvo showing.
