Wenger To Hand Deacon Carling Cup Chance?

With Arsenal’s Carling Cup clash against West Brom fast approaching, Arsenal fans often wonder what new young wannabes will be taking to the Emirates turf. Wenger uses the competition to give fringe first teamers some competitive action, but what excites fans the most is witnessing the next up and coming Cesc Fabregas or Theo Walcott make their mark. And in Roarie Deacon there is a new hopeful who is eager to be the next young Englishman on the Arsenal fans lips.

Over the past few years Wenger has used the Carling Cup to educate and nurture some of the young players in Arsenal’s squad. Most of Arsenal’s current first eleven have used the competition as a stepping stone in to the limelight and with this in mind it gives some of the young guns a realistic chance to make the squad, with Deacon’s early performances placing him in pole position.

Although Deacon’s main priority this season is to gain a professional contract, he will be keeping a keen eye on a Carling Cup call up. Last season Deacon gave glimpses of his undoubted talent, scoring 8 goals for the Under 18’s but this season’s early form has certainly caught the eye, scoring 5 goals in 5 appearances for both Under 18’s and reserves. After coming on as a second half substitute against Fulham reserves, Deacon scored a sublime goal which was followed up with a fine double against Leeds Under 18’s five days later. Deacon’s performances were rewarded with his first second string start against Stoke in which he gave a man of the match performance, which didn’t go unnoticed form the watching eye of Wenger who was able to witness Deacon’s ability first hand. Despite a niggling injury picked up during the Stoke game, Deacon was back amongst the subs for the Under 18’s game against Bristol City and is fully fit after training regularly with the first team.

While it may be a little early for a starting place against West Brom, a squad call up remains a realistic target for the young striker and come Tuesday night there could be a new face on the Arsenal bench.

I can’t see this happening. We have too many people competing for starting places who are ahead of him. Watt, Sunu, Wilshire, Coquelin, Merida, Murphy, Traore, Barazite, Gibbs all have very strong claims to start ahead of deacon. We should be able to put out a strong team with ramsey, senderos and silvestre also needing games. But we need to put out a very strong team to get past west brom who are clearly the best team in the first division and are on fire right now. They must fancy themselves for a run to the semis at least if they can get past us. So not a time to blood a player who hasn’t even signed prof papers yet. Possible team???

    chesney

    gilbert silvestre senderos gibbs
    ramsey coqulein merida
    wilshire watt sunu

Could play Nik in the front three, to give them some experience / physical presence, like last year with watt or sunu dropping to the bench.

Audio coverage on ATVO, don’t think anyone is televising it which is a shame promises to be e hell of a match. Why not go, tickets are on general sale. You never know we could see Theo or vela playing to get match fit – no idea what stage they are at in their recovery but they must be pretty close to returning now.

@ rayman, Merida is away with Spain & Traore is injured. Deacon will be on the bench at least.

Deacon has not been named in the provisional squad according to the Daily Mail, but Freeman is.

DailyMail’s provision squad is wrong, that’s just their expected guess, which is wrong ‘cos Merida is away..

And anyone with ATV, who did Wenger say are the 6 that will play? I’m guessing Mannone, Silvestre, Senderos, Gibbs, Ramsey and Wilshere?

There are so many young players but equally average foreign players in the first team and I’m afraid some of these boys can’t get games.

    1. Gilbert can do great work deputising for Sagna but Arsene is still holding on to Eboue so its difficult.

    2. Gibbs is better than Traore but Arsene is still trying to force Traore at LB where he’s proven to be incompetent there.

    2. Lansbury; good enough to get a short but we have, Diaby, Song and Denilson all young ahead.

    3. CB sense, Bartley and Ayling will be better than Djourou, Sylvestre and Senderos but could they get a chance?

barazite should be one of the first names in the team

don’t understand why people keep leaving him out.

    Chesney
    Gilbert Sendy Silvestre Gibbs
    Frimpong Randall Coquelin
    Watt Barazite Wilshere

is my guess. Excluding Ramsey because he’s a bit too ‘first team’ although I’d love to see him in the team above replacing Randall, like he was Gerrard in front of Masch and Alonso.

“You will see Wojciech Szczesny, Ramsey, Gibbs, Wilshere and certainly Vela,” said Wenger. “Traore will play.

“Some experienced players will guide the team like Senderos and Silvestre. But overall it will be a very, very young team as usual.”

This is what Wenger said in his ATVO interview

    Vela
Would have loved to see Merida(Int) or Lansbury(Loan) instead of Randall.
    Still hoping Barazite will play.

I’m glad Traore and Vela are able to play, I really want to see them fulfill their potential and add something new to the first team.

    I reckon:

    Szczesney
    Gilbert-Senderos-Silvestre-Gibbs
    Randall-Coquelin-Ramsey
    Wilshere-Vela-Traore

You can’t expect Wenger to field a bunch of teenagers because they would get smothered by the physicality of first teamers from the Championship and League One. Even last year we had Fabianski, Djourou, Song and Bendtner in the starting eleven for a bit of experience.

i think bendtner might start up top. after all, wenger leaved him out of starting 11. rosicky could play as well to gain more match fitness. for sure senderos, sylves, ramsey, gibbs and wilshere will play. traore also ahead of the likes of sunu and barazite. for some reasons, despite his poor performance, wenger always stick with randall. so my guess for team tomorrow:

    mannone
    gilbert senderos sylves gibbs
    rosicky randall ramsey
    wilshere bendtner traore

Its not the teenagers facing a strong West Brom side I worry about… its having Silvestre and Senderos at the back that really concerns me!

Going by AW’s comments i would say Tony’s team is the best bet out of all the predictions. I would be very surprised if he left Randall out.

raisonar – No, Coquelin and Sunu aren’t away with France. They were but they’re back now. At least Coquelin is anyway. He sat in front of me along with Ayling, Shea, McDermott, Eastmond, Miquel, Ozyakup and Barazite at the Wigan game.

JS – I’m liking this thing you got going on right now. You, Nick and Gianni keep giving us regular articles, sharing out the workload, and you’re all doing a great job, keep up the good work lads. Cheers.
