Arsenal Sign Fluminense Striker Wellington Silva

Brazilian Serie ‘A’ outfit Fluminense have sold their highly prized young forward Wellington Silva to Arsenal for $5 million dollars, according to respected Rio-based journalist Gilmar Ferreira.

Ferreira has reported on his official blog that, following talks last week, Arsenal have finally ended the protracted saga by snapping up one of the most sought after young strikers around. However, due to FIFA rules, he will follow the same path as Argentine goalkeeper Damián Martínez by remaining with his club until he is 18, in 2011.

The starlet, nicknamed Ciel, impressed during a 7 day trial last Christmas – he even played 45 minutes for the Under 16’s against Norwich – and he made an emphatic impression, scoring 4 goals. In a bid to warn off potential suitors who included Chelsea, Man Utd, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Barcelona, coach Carlos Alberto Parreira promoted Wellington into his first-team squad but financial trouble has seen them buckle, and a deal looks to have been struck by trusted Brazil-based scout Sandro Orlandelli.

More to follow.

Very exciting news if true. How reliable do you reckon this info is J? If it is true, when would his contract with us start?

I have heard of Gilmar Ferreira before and, from a personal opinion, he seems quite reliable. As the article that was posted before says, he works as a sports journo for Rio newspaper ‘Extra’.

There were 2 Wellingtons in the u17 brazil world cup sqaud. The one we signed came off the bench but he is a year younger then the rest of the team. He had W.Silva on his jersey.

Fluminense is struggling. They are in the drop zone. If they don’t they will be sent to Series B. Lots of clubs in South America sell talent to make ends meet. not good. This is a good signing for the Gunners. Zer-zero at half. http://bobbygee.wordpress.com/

The Critic: I know they’re both brazillian, but they have completely different styles. It’s far harder to throw on a youthful, spirited player who bases his game on flair and directness of play, such as Wilshire, into the Prem than a youthful but composed player who bases his game around taking the ball and moving it on, such as Denilson, and, even more so, Cesc. Apart from the increased pressure, they are far more likely to pick up injuries. And Denilson started in the reserves and CC anyway.

He is Wellington Alves Da Silva.

I believe this signing puts an end to the Galvan deal but I think people prefer Wellington anyway.

Right guys to clear this up. There are two Wellington’s who play for Fluminense.

One of them is Wellington Silva Sanches Aguiar. He’s a midfielder with an afro. Most people think he’s the one we’re after and most video are about it. He wears the number 8 for Brazil.

Wellington Alves Da Silva, known as Wellington Silva is a striker with short hair. He’s born in 1993, he’s the one we’ve signed. He wears number 20 for Brazil. You can tell them apart in this photo.

The Arsenal player is on the left, the remaining Fluminense player is ont he right.

The number 8 is really good yeah, but I don’t think creative CMs are the way to go right now, we have so many.

Also, the Gilmar Ferreira article says the fee was 5million euros, not dollars.

Apparently Wellington Silva scored this past weekend in some sort of youth championship in Brazil.

    http://www.fluminense.com.br/materia_interna.asp?idn=9105

I believe it is the Wellington Silva who has been signed by Arsenal, given he is listed as a Striker rather than as a midfielder… Seems to be a great talent!

Its great to have a signing wellington silva seems to have good finishing and is good in the air. i hope he will be benefitial to arsenal in the future. however i also think we need a more experienced forward to get the goals now since van persie is out anyway when he comes he will be an excellent signing.
