Brentford Sign 'Blossoming' Arsenal Striker Murphy

Brentford have made their second loan swoop on Arsenal’s Reserve team by adding striker Rhys Murphy to the acquisition of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny. England Under 19 starlet Murphy heads across London on a 3-month-loan deal.

The 19-year-old injury plagued forward was a key member of the Under 18’s historic double winning side last season and he will go straight into Andy Scott’s side for tonight’s League One game away to Wycombe Wanderers. Arsenal have also given the green light for Rhys to play in FA Cup tie against Walsall at Griffin Park this Saturday. Speaking just minutes after confirming the capture of one of the country’s most exciting young goal poachers, Scott said:

“Rhys is another good signing for us. He has a lot of potential, so much so he is seen as a future First Team squad member at Arsenal. This opportunity is good for both ourselves and Rhys as it will allow him to blossom under our guidance. In that respect it also confirms that Brentford is seen as a club that can help the progress of young up and coming Premiership players.”

Rhys will wear the number 37 shirt for Brentford and as usual Young Guns will be reporting on his fortunes throughout his period away from the club in our regular Loanee Reports.

Does Rhys have a future with Arsenal ? He is never spoken of in the same breath as Afobe or Freeman.

I thought he was good but didn’t suspected he’s rated very highly and play in the first team. Would be great to part something like with celta vigo. Sent them players to give them taste real football. League One is not bad and with ours help it can be championship. Good luck to him!

It’s great there is a London club happy to take the younger lads (and that Arsenal is happy with, too) so they stay in their comfort zone off the field, at least.

Andy Scott seems a good manager for these younger lads – an ex player, a londoner-ish, a forward (great for Rhys) and someone who has had success of late with league two and he’s no fool – he obviously sees the link up with Arsenal as a great way to get the club into the top half of the league table and possibly a playoff push. Two spinal players and putting them straight in the team. That takes courage.

Anyone know anything more about Andy Scott and the set up at Brentford and how it might work in the lads favour?

TheCritic- It depends what you want to do. Poaching youngsters for ‘free’ is impossible now and for good reason (well you read Young Guns!). You have to offer the club a price or pay compensation for making them leave their current one. I have found that buying him directly from the club in 1off payments is cheaper than traditional Cesc-esque ‘poaching’ as that can add up w/ amounts of appearances, goals, trophies etc.

The only way to get players for free, and I mean free- is to sign them at the end of their contract. Not only this, if they are under 23 (i think), you still have to compensate their previous club when taking players at the end of their contract.

Generally you have to be a lot better at scouting to find hidden talents and cheap prospects than you used to be- especially considering they have re-done the youth transfers to resemble how the top clubs in real life compete for the best at a young age.

@ PG, Its a shame for Murphy bcuz he is exceptional in and around goal, very good awareness, 1st touch, exceptional movement, he is more a combination striker than physical striker thus he will have improve his hold-up play aerially and on the floor, also his reserves teammates need to be aware of this to make offer him quick support when the ball is played up to him in same way 1st team dont leave RVP isolated bcuz he also is a combination striker than a physical one like Drogba.

I think bcuz 1st team lack of players with work very hard off-the-ball, that has countered in Sunu & Watt’s favour plus their versaitility on top of being technical. It just goes to show avoiding bad injuries until age of 20 is quite important bcuz you dont want development of young player to be disrupted.

Also its hard to choose loan moves for our players bcuz there isnt many teams lower down the Prem [even in the prem itself] playing combination passing game.

“Cesc the best” ur an idiot, watt is technically very good, thats why he is chosen before murphy, sunu, barazite. he will definetly make it in PL , hopefully with arsenal.

It will help Murphy regain match fitness. he’s looked rusty ever since he came back from injury last season.

He is a classy player. everything he tries is accurate.

I have always rated Murphy higher than Watt. Maybe it is his elegance and guile where Sanchez is a more direct player. He’s reminds me of Ian Wright in the way he scores. Have been surprised that Watt has beaten him to CC team although not against him of course.

the bees are my other team — andy scott, the manager, is a very bright bloke and will bring him on in leaps and bounds. he appreciates skill and talent.

if you get a chance, go see these two young gooners play at griffin park – underground to south ealing and a ten minute walk. or british rail from clapham junction to brentford and a five minute walk. a pub on every corner of the ground. family atmosphere.

When is Nacer Barazite due to return? I rate him very highly, he has the physical attributes and flair to be a Kaka type of player in the future (skill, pace, running power, vision).

Szczesny is so obviously on track its scary. Express train to the first team

But to those above who doubt Sanchez Watt – helloo? He is a sure thing to make it to the first team. Wenger has given Watt those games he got because his never-say-die attitude is something that you dont find in young players any more. The finer points they can teach him and he has the speed to be a top player, very smooth athlete. When he runs it is like he is skipping over water

You look at the likes of Gibbs and that is the same reason. Its not because he looked spectacular but a top-class athlete with a top-class attitude. Players like that you can mould into anything.

And you can see the same developing with Eastmond. Not the guy the fans would have voted, but in the context of the team he has the right attributes.

So dont sleep on Watt. The only way he doesnt make it to the first team is if he loses his work ethic – and that doesnt seem like ti will happen.
