Brentford Welcome 'Quality Loan Signing' Szczęsny

League One outfit Brentford have signed Arsenal’s Reserve team goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny on a month-long loan deal. The 19-year-old trained with the Bees this morning and will stay at Griffin Park until the 20th of December.

Szczęsny, who made his full international debut for Poland on Wednesday as a second half substitute against Canada, has been courted by many Championship clubs for a potential loan spell but injuries to fellow glovesmen Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski has seen Arsene Wenger hold fire.

Two clean sheets from his three Reserve team outings this year added to his already growing reputation as one of the best Under 21 ‘keepers around, and he confirmed this after starring on his first-team debut against West Brom in the Carling Cup. Bees boss Andy Scott moved to welcome the 6’5 inch Pole on Brentford’s official website:

“This is another good signing for the Club and he brings with him more of the quality that we are looking to introduce to the squad. It also shows our capability to bring in good players. We are looking forward to working with him and enjoying a fruitful relationship.”

Wojciech will go straight into the Brentford team for tomorrows clash with Walsall where he will ware the number 53. Young Guns will have a full report on his debut in our weekly ‘Loanees Reports’.

Have to say really pleased to see that Szczęsny seems to be doing well. After that freak injury last year really thought we wouldn’t be hearing that much about him again. Hope he does wll at brentford and comes back stronger.

He won’t be their main ‘keeper. Brentford have got a Welsh international in goal at the moment, I expect that he’ll be back up.

I’m going to Griffin Park tomorrow btw.

@ cc… ehmm we will see what this club will do. but he is probably their best keeper right now so I guess yes. If you can bring in a keeper that is better than you current for only a month.. then do it becouse it’s better than nothing.

I don’t see why we would let them loan Szczesny to sit on the bench. Surely, he will play.

We loan players for a month at least to make sure they play. If they don’t play after a month then we will recall them, otherwise it will get extended. It wouldn’t surprise me if we didn’t see Wocjiech until the summer.

I think this means he is deemed very close to ready. I would guess that Wenger’s plan is that Almunia is history after this season and Fabianski becomes the starter. Szczesny then becomes number 2 keeper.

But for that to happen first he has to go and prove himself on loan.

i doubt wenger considers almunia as finished by the summer unless he has a horrible second half to the season. if he can regain the form he had last year he’ll easily retain his place as number 1, whether people are happy with that or not

Or that Lyon keeper, but I doubt we will buy an expensive keeper like that. I hope he stays there until the end of the season and comes back to take the no. 1 jersey. Seriously, he will be ready.

It seems weird though to loan him out to a team who already has an international GK on loan. I hope they won’t make the same mistake as they did with loaning Mannone to Barnsley couple of years back.

Sam, i don’t think Wenger considers Almunia to be anywhere near finished. I reckon Fabianski will move on next summer, Vito & Wojciech will vie for the no.2 position with Szczesny eventually coming out on top & finally succeeding Almunia in a 2-3 seasons.

    1) Arsenal just resigned Fabianski – he ain’t going anywhere

    2) Almunia is the “best we have”, but that indeed is the point: he is the best keeper we have but not good enough. And also the oldeest. So aint gonna develop any more. You fold the cards on him and move on. Either install Fabianski or buy a real #1 keeper.
