Wenger – 'Szczęsny Will Be A Great Goalkeeper'

Wojciech Szczęsny’s outstanding performances whilst on loan at Brentford have caught the eye of many, but his rise to fame with the Bees has not surprised manager Arsène Wenger who lauded the Poland international in an exclusive web chat with Arsenal fans.

Szczęsny recently penned an extension beyond the inital month he was supposed to spent on loan, despite admitting he had other more ‘interesting offers’. The thinking behind the deal is to get Wojciech as much experience as early as possible, something his French boss says is key;

“My plan is to continue to develop him. The problem with a goalkeeper is it is a little bit special, because in a big club like Arsenal, we need very good goalkeepers. You know that the experience is a big part, it’s maybe something that starts a little bit later, so we will give him as much experience as we can as soon as we can”

Szczęsny still trains three times a week at London Colney with Gerry Peyton, Mart Poom and David Seaman all assisting the prospect in his development. Talk among the coaching staff has been rife for a long time that they have a potential star on their hands, something the manager also let out.

“We [the coaching staff] have identified Wojciech as a future great, great goalkeeper”

Whether his loan gets extended beyond the 20th of January is unknown, but it’s thought bigger and better things lay ahead of the 6’5 glovesman, with development the name of the game in his quest to live up to his potential.

Yh i heard that never heard wenger give a glowing examination of a youngster like that. I remeber him saying that similar to mario Balotelli but in my opinion chesney should be our number 1 hes got everything u need in a goalkeeper.

BTW he also praised aaron ramsey quite alot he said him and fabregas can play together in midfield which i want to see with song holding in midfield.

Did u hear the bit on the throw ins he wants to change them so that u use your feet instead of the hands. But he also said offsides wud count so u cant hoof it long. Thats a very clever idea that would also stop rory delap long throw ins lol. genius

On Aaron Ramsey: sport.co.uk made a top 25 of goals of the decade. no 4: Aaron Ramsey vs Italy U-21. That is quite something.

On Chesney: amazing talent. Bit suprised he stayed at the Bees, especiallt with your article earlier this month. Perhaps he will go on a bigger, better loan after the 20th of January. In the meantime, keep it up Wojciech!

i think league 1 is good for him, there are good lcubs like leeds charlton, norwich, millwall and so on, i think its better for him to stay in england, get used to the gameplay and also he doesnt have to re-settle in a foreign country

Yeah I don’t like the throw-in idea. And Delap’s advantage should be accepted. It’s like saying you shouldn’t be alowed to head the ball, because some players are taller than others.

I totally agree with what John said about Aaron Ramsey!! I trust him more than Diaby even though they are different players. His decision making is a lot better!! I really hope Wenger is right!! He hardly ever calls a player so young a “great” or “future great”!! so i’m thinking he’ll be pretty good!!:D Hopefully a bit better than Almunia!! He doesn’t have to be twice as good but I hope he’s better. With the number of goals we score it’s not like we would have to rely on him like Juventus do with Buffon lol.

U numpties Wenger said the offside rule can count so u cant just hoof it up there. And also it reduces time wasting plus u can take throw ins quicker by kicking the ball rather than throwing it

Aaron ramsey for me is top class he should be ahead of diaby and denilson hes far better than both. DOnt give me this crap about denilson defensive ability i dont think its as a good as people make out to be. hes a very efficient player but ramsey is just an even better all round player

denilson is currently better than ramsey but ramsey is showing huge potential, IMO denilson does a great job in what he does, but ramsey is more impressive going forward, he likes to take the game by the scruff of the neck and dominate (like he did against scotland for wales)

Aaron ramsey has played in the holding role many ppl see him as a Bryan robson type breaks up play than starts attacks.

I think our best three in midfield is ramsey song fabregas i think the ball retention would be alot better and we would be less relient on fabregas

Ramsey is better than denilson hes a better passer of the ball, got more vision, stronger, faster, more physical, scores goals, creates chances, can tackle and win the ball back.

Denilson is good at passing it sideways, backwards and interceptions thats about it

Ramsey`s feisty!!:D Alot more than last year but that`s because he`s probably more comfortable. He`s tougher than Diaby. Not stronger but TOUGHER. Diaby`s coming along nicely though but man i`m all on Aaron Ramsey right now lol. I agree 100% with what John is sayin about him. Denilson is very servicable but Ramsey is goin gangbusters right now and i`m really excited to see it. Different from Fabregas for sure. He offers something that nobody else in the club can from midfield I think. Apart from Song he`s improved the most and he only has been with the club for a year and a half. United lost big time with this!!!:D Yeeeaaaaaahhhh:)

Well if Szczesny is as good as Wenger says then he should go on loan to a championship club next season.

Then in 2 seasons time he couuld be number 2 at Arsenal pushing Fabianski.

Hehe, I posted a comment about this guy on the site a day or two ago after I heard he’s already been capped for Poland. Still can’t believe that to be honest. 19 and already got an international cap, having only played a handful of 1st team games.
This kid really has something. It’d be great if we can have a real quality young goalkeeper like buffon was, or lloris and akinfaev are now. They’re always the best ones.
Cech might have been like that if it wasn’t for his head injury – something to look out for for szczesny I guess – although I never thought cech played that well for czech republic. He always seemed to make mistakes when put under pressure for them so I was never convinced he was as good as the early chelsea performances suggested. Certainly had a few brilliant seasons for chelsea though.

Actually, his loan ends 17 January. And I’m not sure the extension indicates he chose Brentford despite more interesting offers, rather: Brentford over the possibility of twiddling his thumbs at Arsenal until the new loan window opens.

Sorry, but people on her claiming that Ramsey is “far better” than both Diaby and Denilson are either childishly biased toward Ramsey or stupid.

Ramsey is not as good as either player. He still needs time to develop his technique and to learn how to play in high pressure matches. I have a great deal of belief in Ramsey’s talent. He’s a great prospect and could become an excellent player at some point in the near future, but right now Diaby and Denilson are very easy choices to start in front of him.

Keeper is a tricky position due to the experience factor, and that is why Wenger is referring to it being a bit “special”. Essentially what I read into Wenger’s quote is they’d love to play him now but he doesn’t have the experience. So they’re loaning him out to get the experience so they can slot him in. That’s different to saying somebody still needs to develop.

Casillas is an interesting exception to the whole experience thing – how old was he when he started playing for the first team?

r u kidding? szczesny has already been better than his older national fellow. he is just second to almunia on experience part, and by far our best keeper all around. if I had to pick one of our keepers to get rid of, it must be fabianski who has nothing superior to any of other arsenal keepers. in 2 years…at the most…szczesny should be our No.1, otherwise we must lose him as he is too good to be No.2 or loan out to lower club. age should never be the issue, taking buffon and casillas in case. if you are good enough, you are old enough.

Chesney needs to stay at Brentford for the season. He has been magnificent but he has made mistakes which at that level he can get away with. Then back at The Arse for a year then out to a premier club. Then our NO.1 – 3 years time.

KC what are you talking about?? What did Diaby do in the biggest game of the season against United??? I can`t remember too many high pressure situations or games when Ramsey has started or played. Maybe a couple. I still don`t trust Diaby. And his technique at times is horrible. Ramsey`s first touch has improved immensely from last year. If Diaby continues to play the way he did against Hull, then he will be on the right track, but Ramsey has not disappointed once this year.

I don’t think expeptional talented keeper appears too often. I’m not old enough to see how keepers like lehmann or seaman were doing at their early stage. but szczesny is obviously far better than any of other keepers from our academy in last 10 years. for example, I just didn’t expect a young keeper at mannone’s level would be still in our squad now, that explains how weak we are in goal.

    Milo,

I agree that Ramsey hasn’t disappointed this season but you have to put his performances in perspective. He’s a young 18 year old kid with a great deal of skill and enthusiasm coming off the bench for almost all of his prem appearances. This does not automatically translate into a player you select above a 23 year old with extensive prem experience and CL experience.

Diaby dominated Hull. He was involved greatly in all three goals we scored and made Hull look like boys in the 2nd half. Yes, He screwed up against United, and he doesn’t deliver the dominating performances as much as we’d like. Still, he offers much more to the team that Ramsey at this point. Ramsey hass to become a talented player who can play at a great level (relative to his experience) week in week out, but he’s obviously not there yet because Wenger won’t start him. Diaby is becoming a player who can dominate prem competition. Right notw with so many injuries to key players, obviously Wenger sees Diaby as the clear choice.

Having watched Sczeczny quite closely in recent times, I am convinced he is the best keeper on our books right now. However he does not have enough experience to be in the Premier League just yet.
In the meantime, sadly I think Almunia is the weakest No.1 in the PL and unless Wenger addresses this immediate problem in January, then our hopes of winning anything this season will fade away again

Yeah you’re right KC. I know he hasn’t started at all or very little, so it must be that Wenger feels he isn’t quite ready yet. Just hope Diaby keeps it up and improves. Almunia has improved a bit over the last couple of games…hard not to when he was so terrible for a while lol. And it seems he has taken the criticism extremely well!! I can’t wait to see what Sczezny is really made of!! Maybe in an FA cup game this year or the Carling cup next year?? I don’t know at all:S

john: you are monumentally stupid. “defend denilson, but don’t talk to me about possibly the greatest aspect of his game”. ok there boss. what about that this player you say only passes sideways and interceptions got 7 assists last season and has already scored 3 from outside the box this season? what a one dimensional player he is! “pah, just because he has one of the best interceptions and tackling rates and passing rates in the game, that means nothing!” and can’t even accept that he provides so much more as well as what he is great at.

And by the way, all Arsenal players pass sideways. It’s called BALL RETENTION. Fucking hell, what team have you mistaken us with all this time? When you saw all them long balls by the retards in orange this weekend did you think “come on you gunners”?

Lets get realistic here. Ramsey is a fantastic talent but to say that he is far better than Denilson and Diaby is either naive or biased. I’m sure he will overcome them in 2 years time or so but for now the two D’s are more experienced and mature players and very disciplined, especially Denilson. Ramsey is often too enthusiastic and every game he plays he gives a stupid pass when he is right in front of our box. He will have to mature and stay more relaxed before he will be an automatic pick. Our midfield is maybe not very experienced but these three are all fantastic talents who all offer us something different. And in my opinion, Denilson is better than both Lucas and Anderson, as well as Deco who very often starts for Chelsea. It’s not a case of us only having chickens in midfield. We have the best attacking midfielder in the league and certainly a Top3 DM alongside very good third midfielder. Just compare it to United. Sure, they have Fletcher, and Giggs has been fantastic this year. But do you think Scholes, Anderson, Carrick or Gibbson would make it into our midfield? Barely the squad, I would say.

If I was Wenger, I would get Szczesny a loan deal for the rest of the season with a Championship club and then make him our No. 1 in the summer. This kid will be ready. He will be 20, he will be ready. About as exciting prospect as Cesc was.

Stone I’ll admit I am a bit biased towards Ramsey. BUT…I think the real issue is who we will keep in the long haul, what formation we stick with, who leaves in the next couple of years, and maybe most importantly, who develops the most. If we can get away with a more attacking midfield I would play Song, Ramsey and Fabregas, but if, in the near future we need a more solid base, then it would probably be Diaby, Song and Fabregas, or Denilson, Song and Fabregas. It all depends on the health of the defense and the trends of play in the league, as well as teams individually, that come to the fore. Meaning…nobody knows squat I guess hahaha. And I am really starting to like Denilson and I was thinking he might have a shot at making the world cup squad, but some people would call me delusional…I dunno. I’ve never ever benn a fan of Diaby though and I’ll readily admit that lol.

Especially if he continues to play like he has been. He has improved a lot in the past two years! Arsenal players were checking in into a hotel on summer camp in Austria, and the last bunch were on the counter, Vela, Theo and Szczesny handed in their passports and the receptionist asked their names to be written down.

-Szczesny, said Wojciech right after Carlos and Theo,
-How do you write that, asked the puzzled receptionist.
-With and ‘S’ (and with a pen) continues the talented keeper.

This incident isn’t confirmed by the club.
