Update – Arsenal Back In The Race For Smalling

Arsenal are now believed to be back in the race for Fulham defender Chris Smalling after having a bid accepted by the Cottagers.

Manchester United have been in talks with the England Under 21 international since this morning and they’ve announced on their website that they had signed the player and that all but a medical is needed for the deal to be done. However, Fulham say nothing has been signed. Smalling is due at their Carrington training complex tomorrow where he will have those tests but Arsenal have now stepped in and reportedly matched the fee of around £8 million.

Life long Gooner Smalling now looks to have the final decision on any move.

Can’t wait to see bentdner play as a striker instead of on the wing! He needs a run of games up front! I think he can do a good job for us. Eduardo seems like he has lost something!!!!!!

I Quote from Fulham’s website “Fulham can confirm that it has reached an agreement with Manchester United for the transfer of Central Defender Chris Smalling.

Should a successful medical be completed and final terms agreed the player will join Sir Alex Ferguson’s team at the start of the 2010/2011 season, staying at Fulham for the remainder of the current season.” and also on skysports there isn’t anyway that say’s he has signed. So fingers crossed!

We all seem to forget including myself, Eduardo broke his leg in half not to long ago. His best quality is his finishing. He has been getting some great chances to score but he looks like he lacks confidents. We know his technique hasnt gone away because of the injury because of those goals he scored last year in the cup had that quality to them. I think if he just gets his confidents back then the goals will start coming.

7M for 4 league appearances- Wenger was right not to sign him for that amount. How much was Toure bought for? How much was Clichy bought for? How much was *shudder* Adebayor bought for? This is how Arsenal operate, and yes it can get frustrating at times but that is why we aren’t in a slight *cough* financial crisis like United. And to o-dog and others who think this inexperienced player is better than Djourou- what makes you think he’s better? Did you see something in his 4 league appreances or have you never seen djourou play before? Djourou had triple the amount of league appearances this kid did by the time he was 18, and at a club like Arsenal too.

Gioo…To be fair to united, they arent having financial difficulties because of transfers. Their debt is because of the loans the glazers took out to buy the club. They could make big money moves before the glazers to over and were not in debt. They are in the top 3 for profit gained through marketing aspects with Barcelona and Real Madrid. Hell, it is funny how alot of Arsenals money is made by buying a cheap player and turning a profit on him but how much Man Utd make buy simply buying 1 asian player. I cant imagine how many extra South Korean fans Man Utd have simply by having Park Ji Sung.

Where do you draw the line when conducting transfer business? You want a player where fair market value is 1000k. Any club selling a player, on their own terms, are obviously wanting to maximize sale price. If they quote 3000k for said player, should your manager stump up the difference with the player being identified as someone of interest or do you draw the line at what is a realistic asking price?

I can’t criticize or fault Arsenal for the way they do their business – in an age where most clubs are drowning in debt, Arsenal are one of the most financially sound clubs in the world and they deserve credit for this.

Smalling’s played 4 games in the Premiership. He’s not ‘proven’ at all.

As for my comments last night, yes, I believe Wenger will / should be sacked in the summer unless he wins the title this year. In fact, as soon as we’re out of the title race, he should be handed his P45 and contents of his desk. And, unless he agrees to sign Denilson for Real Madrid or whichever club is foolish enough to invite him in, we should sue him for mismanagement.

Dudu – was an unbelievable finisher pre injury, now, even with a run of games, still looks like he lacks confidence.. I reckon AW will persist with him, but for his own sake (and more importantly, AFC’s) he needs to bag one or two in the next few games against tricky opposition.. Vela, a similar player IMO, also needs a goal or two to settle in..

its hard to believe some AFC fans are so short sighted. Wenger is saying now he isn’t going to buy a striker. typical. Its the same thing every transfer window. The guy is a genius but the mixed messages, getting our hopes up and then the eventual inevitable disappointment in every transfer window is really starting to wear thin. I’m usually very positive when it comes to Arsenal but after our falling short at the back end of the season in recent years has me feeling its only a matter of time before we fall away again. And that frustrates.
We need a quality proven goalkeeper and striker if we want to win the league or champions league and everybody knows it. We won’t do it with almunia in goal and we all know it. So its about time wenger got a reality check and dip into that fat wad of cash the board claims is available. Until then i’m not getting my hopes up

1 – Wenger was succesful in the past, but over the last 5 years his management has been exceptionally poor. Whilst he has an unsurpassed eye for talent, his ability to use the transfer market effectively is limited, and he’s the worst defensive coach in the top half of the table.

2 – Wanting Wenger fired has nothing to do with Smalling. I’ve wanted him gone, and said so, for 2.5 years.

the last five yrs – 2004/2005 won fa cup
2005/2006 – runners up champions league final
2006/2007 – nearly won the lg missed out by 4 points
    2007/2008 – not a great season
    2008/2009 – 2 cup semi final (FA/Champs lg)
2009/2010 – potentially in a very good position.

so his exceptionally poor management has the above record and recording a profit for the club which puts the club in a good position in the future and also a stadium that increases revenue and puts us in the man utd brcket in terms of match day earnings. I think your an exceptionally poor fan/supporter.

The time for buying potential is over. We’re on the cusp of a succesful season but he refuses to buy that proven talent, steel and experience to push is over the line. We’re too small, too weak, and minus a quality keeper and striker to compete with chelsea. And i am trying to tell myself they won’t hand our arses to us again next week but i’m struggling to believe it.

ya jimbo i know what you mean. i wanted him sacked after his shambolic team selection in cup semi-final last year and completely pathetic effort against united. That was proof we needed to toughen up and add some physicality. instead he sold probably our two most physical players. Kolo and the other bitch. That $40million should have been put back into the team last summer. And that pisses me off. we could have got david villa
The problem with sacking wenger is who is good enough to replace him? and also the fact alot of the players futures at the club seem intertwined with wengers. Wenger goes and i think we lose cesc and and at least a couple others. Especially if they deem it an unfair sacking. Perhaps they would think differently if he leaves of his own choice. And in my opinion after what he’s done for us he at least deserves that

In a tense but surprisingly one-sided encounter, Arsenal ran out winners after 120 goalless minutes despite being outplayed throughout the game, becoming the first club to win the cup on penalties. It was the first goalless draw in an FA Cup final since 1912.”

Well, Tony, I think the most important thing we can do is look in a different direction altogether. Winning the title with a different manager might COST a lot more than finishing 3rd / 4th with Wenger, but for me it will be infinitely more rewarding.

After all, I’d rather have a manager who at least gives me the hope that we MIGHT eventually win something than a manager who convinces me that he cannot put together a team with enough toughness or defensive nous to ever win anything again (despite what he’s won in the past).

why is everyone ganging up on? There is a lot of truth to what he is saying. Wenger did go on a personal quest to fulfill his ideological version of teambuilding. Thinking he could create a core group of players that could dominate and win together. So he sacrificed buying proven talent (we do have the money, look at the desperate signing of arshavin).

No, desperate would of been to be in the shoes of Totteringham, who tried to sign him THAT SUMMER of 2008 for round-about £16 mil, which was rejected. We got a cut rate deal on a 80,000k a week talent.

By the way, by your logic only English players would be playing in the premier league because every foreigner is unproven before he plays his first game in the prem.

Ok people…. I will play mediator here.. Jimbo….Sacking Wenger makes no sense what so ever. The man is litterally setting the club up to be stable for many along time even after Wenger has moved on. Team selections are hard to judge because we dont know the true fitness of every player in the squad. Honestly what Manager could we possibly get that could get that could work on his budget, play the beautiful football we play, get a stadium built, turn 3 million pound signings into 25 million pound players, Keep our club stable in a financial depression, and o ya he has won trophies and hell even had an undefeated league season 1 year.

Now even tho Jimbo is completely wrong on alot of his view….It is true that we have fallen short on the final hurtle because of some weak links or the other team had a world class player that just beat us. I like our policy of transfers and I get it, but sometimes it is taken to far. Wenger saves money by by players like Diaby for 2 million when other clubs are spending 17 million on Nani. But every top club still needs 2 things, quality depth and top top players. At a big club you can build a good squad but if you dont have a couple guys like a Fabregas or Henry to push us over the top, then you just keep coming up short. Now of course you dont have to spend 40 million but there is world class talent in the 12 to 17 million range. The other thing is we all know we dont have quality depth at cb,cdm and we dont have a quality keeper. Save the money on the squad players so we can afford a couple more world class players.
