Rhys Murphy‘s playing career is in doubt after the injury-prone forward sustained a serious ankle injury in training with loan club Brentford. The early prognosis is that he will be out for 3 to 6 months, meaning his season is over.
The England Under 19 international is regarded as a fantastic prospect for both club and country but throughout his short career he’s been dogged by constant injuries. These have included various ankle complaints and a hernia issue which needed an operation. Part of Arsenal’s Under 18 double winning side last year, Rhys missed large chunks of the campaign but did get key goals, including the winner in the Premier Academy League final.
His loan move to Brentford in November was seen as a perfect chance for Murphy to show his best form, but he’s struggled to make an impact in Andy Scott’s League One outfit. A heavy tackle in training this week left the striker with a trip to hospital and both player and club will monitor the situation and decide how long full rehabilitation will take, and whether he can make a full recovery or not.
It’s expected that Rhys will now return to Arsenal for treatment.

Absolute tragedy for the poor kid. Rhys has had the worst luck. He’s a very talented kid, but just can’t seem to stay healthy long enough for it to materialize and develop.

If you have included all the info you have on this, then perhaps the headline is slightly sensationalist J. We don’t know the specific problem, or even which ankle. Arsenal are a patient club, and I can’t think that giving up on Rhys will be on their minds.
It is a shame that Rhys Murphy has got injured yet again, but it is far to early to be saying his career could be over IMO.
I feel so sorry for the kid hes been so unlucky.
A couple of years ago along with lansbury they were the best 2 prospects in Europe. I remeber the Euro under 17s Rhys Murphy was superb he was much better than likes of welbeck, moses just so unlucky hes injured.
Block5 is right. They won’t give up on him just yet. He will have so much work to do to become a full time professional but with some luck he can make it. I hope he makes a full recovery. Eduardo is coming along. I know Rhys isn’t on the same level but he’s younger and who knows what could happen?? as long as he still loves the game then I don’t think he can be ruled out.

For god’s sake, how can people have a go about there being hard tackles in training? If in training everyone went around doing soft tackles, then in matches players would be useless, as they wouldn’t be used to being challenged.
I can understand if the article used “reckless” or “over the top” to describe the tackle, but it just said “heavy”.
Will go on join the likes of Garry,Ryan Smith,Barret,Aliadiere etc young players who had great potential but have been ruined by injury.Djourou could yet join that list.I know there is quite a lot more i’m forgetting who have been ruined in the Wenger era before their carrers got started.

No information regarding his injury has been released by either club as yet which would suggest that they don’t yet know what the problem is. Everyone that is wishing Rhys well in the comments is doing exactly the right thing. Perhaps all those who have fallen for the drama of the “headline” should consider how this could be detrimental to the mindset of a young player at a time when he will clearly be trying to stay focused on keeping fit. Hey you gotta look at it objectively. We were missing Song and Fabregas, who both played in the first match against Everton. We reallllllly missed Song. Denilson wasn’t cutting it at all. Diaby improved a lot as the match went on and finished wonderfully. We are missing players and if you thought we were going to win after Everton scored to make it 2-1 in like the 84th minute, then I don’t really know what to say. we all know we don’t play well in the cold weather. Yes both teams felt the cold but still, last year we would have lost this match by two or three goals. We didn’t totally capitulate. I didn’t think we would whip them like we did in the first match. A win today wasn’t out of the question. In fact I liked our chances going into half-time. But obviously as the match wore on things changed and the result was fair and not COMPLETELY dissatisfying. But maybe i’m just not a tough enough critic, The critic…whadyasay…hmmmm????
Look i am not being funny but i think denilson is the problem every time he seems to play we dont look fluid in midfield.
The other problem is that Wenger thinks Denilson can do songs job he simply cant i dont care if hes got brilliant work rate and stamina. Hes not physiclly big enough or strong enough to hold off challenges and protect the ball when being marked.
I think when fabregas comes back we should play diaby, fabregas, ramsey and our midfield would be alot more fluid
I personally would try and play vermaelen in midfield i really do think he can play there and play silvestre at centre back try it out next week see how we do.
I agree that Denilson probably can’t fill Song’s role. I didn’t think he could before this match and I still don’t. Traore was awful today as well but he has been doing very well aside from this match. I don’t know if i’d like to see Silvestre and him in the same back 4 though lol. And as for me talking like a tough guy a few comments ago: look I’m not afraid to stand up for what I believe in. Verbally or physically. I am much more successful in the former due to my size but I’m not afraid of anyone. Right now my love for this club and my family is what I have right now. I don’t have a job right now either. I agree that we need some true wingers, but these days a lot of other big clubs are missing them as well, and whenever we get a player who supposedly can dribble and take players on, they end up passing as much as anyone. Eg. Nasri lol. It doesn’t really bother me too much though because our attacking strategie dictates that players should focus more on passing instead of taking guys on. Even the wide players. Arshavin takes players on and beats them and Rosicky can as well. Now we could shoot a bit more often maybe, but i’d rather we try to pass more than end up like Chelsea lol, where you see Lampard and Essien and Drogba and Ballack take shots from 25-35 yards out and placing the ball perfectly into row “Z” hahaha. The only chance we might have fluffed was when Gallas had a chance to prod the ball into the net. There might have been a few more but I just forgot them. If Walcott can perform like he did 2 years ago then we have Walcott and Arshavin. Arshavin isn’t blazing blazing fast but with his ability on the ball he still regularly beats players. Yeah i’m beginning to see where you guys are comiong from. We really could do with some back up for Arshavin and someone to either replace Walcott or offer some insurance. But I still really like the way we attack. I’m really worried about Song’s position,but I think Ramsey, Vermaelen or maybe Diaby can fill it. We were much better once Denilson was gone. I don’t dislike Denilson, it’s just that I don’t think he can play that position….yet…
So far this season, we’ve actually been the team that has scored the most, have the highest shots on target, and best conversion rates from outside the box in the league.
Think our width wasn’t too bad yesterday. There were some good crosses that just needed a touch to go in. Unfortunately, Eduardo still doesn’t look like the goalscorer of old, and no one else seems to be making the runs often enough. Think that’s where we missed Cesc and RvP the most as they seemed to be getting to the end of the crosses more often this season.
Not sure if we can rely on Bendtner as it takes a while for players to make any impact after a long lay-off. Really need some new players (and hope they can make an immediate impact ala Arshavin and Vermaelen) if we want to win the league this year.
Milo, I can see sense in what you are saying about Diaby and Ramsey filling in Song’s role, but I think they would only be comfortable by the time Song actually returns, and in that time we could’ve lost valuable points. I think that we need a new defensive midfielder or at least someone who is comfortable playing there (recall Nordtveit?) and we missed a chance to sign Vieira. Although his legs have gone, money can’t buy his experience, not to mention his superb aggression and tackling ability.
Many people have said we need a winger who can take players on but I disagree, maybe we just need to change our game plan? Nasri, Rosicky and Arshavin can easily take players on but maybe Wenger is just telling his wingers to pass more often than dribble, who knows?
We certainly need one or two additions and any new players would be welcome, but first and foremost we need to look for someone to fill in Song’s void, and then possibly a goalscorer. Everton proved that Arshavin can so easily by stopped and Eduardo hasn’t looked the same player he once was. Signs of improvement have been there but he is no where near back to goalscoring form.
Well I don’t think getting Vieira would have been a good thing. Really. I don’t know why, but I just get this feeling that he has this immense sense of entitlement. Yes he has been great for club and country, but anyone who would court Real Madrid, leave Juventus after they are relegated, and then resort to having to jump to City isn’t cool in my books. He feels he should STILL be a lock for the French national team. I mean do me a favour. If he plays great for city then fine, I’ll admit I’m an idiot but until then I don’t think we’re missing him. We might be missing a defensive midfielder, but I don’t know. The lack of available and truly valuable players maybe means that we shouldn’t sign anyone there. I think we should bring Havard back. Even if he doesn’t play in the first team, because it sounds like he might not play a whole lot the rest of the season in Nuremburg. We may drop some points in a month but as a whole lotta people have been saying…so will the other big teams. The argument could be that we should take the initiative, but buying really might unsettle some of the other players. I know people are gonna kill me for this, but the direction the club is going, in my opinion is correct, and even if we don’t win the league or Europe this year as long as we have some true, steel (like Song, Rosicky(because he has battled through injuries)) we will be fine. We have all the skill and talent in the world and if we continue to gain mental strength I really do think we will dominate. Yeah “TheCritic” I’m kinda high on Matuidi myself, but there hasn’t been one rumour yet about him!! lol. That could be a good thing though seeing that Arsene hardly, if ever shows his hand in transfer dealings. Again though like I said previously, would Matuidi be happy rotating with Song, with Song getting the majority of games?? I don’t know. He is the same age as Song and is probably looking to boost his career. And we wouldn’t want anything to unsettle Song, now that he has established himself as a crucial component in the first 11. That’s the dilema that Arsene faces and the one he has talked about a bit before. And knowing him he rightfully wouldn’t want to spend money on a player, that might leave if he doesn’t get first team action, meanwhile the presence of the new player unsettles the incumbent. That’s kinda what happened with Lassana Diarra. Even Viera would probably not have been happy sitting on the bench once Song came back. So really the only thing he can do is wait until Song comes back. Unless something else comes up. I still think we can weather the storm. But you never know what is out there and what Arsene is thinking lol.
Milo what about promoting a youngster, i could see Emmanuel Frimpong playing first team football next season. Perhaps Matuidi could come in on loan for Jan, and we could see if he is a good investment.

The French league is strong, and stronger than it was when Lyon went nuts and won 7 championships in a row or whatever. But it still isn’t the premierleague. So it could work!! Eastmond might be a little weak right now. I’ve seen more of him than Frimpong but if Frimpong is on a comparable technical level to Estmond, and if he has a bit more strength why not?? I know a lot of people aren’t fans of estmond and I tend to think that he isn’t quite ready to feature in a major competition like the F.A. cup, but as everyone knows, trust wenger more than anyone. And i really do. At first I fought this only a bit but I can still see where this all is headed and Wenger has been proven correct on so many occasions. I was very impressed by what Eastmond accomplished in the Carling cup, and if he continues to build on that, then we will have a capable squad player. I’ve only seen Frimpong a couple of times so I can’t really say anything about what I think of him as a player…Or person lol. Na but you know what I mean.

So you’re basically saying that for most of the season our midfield hasn’t looked fluid?
Denilson provides a medium that allows someone like Cesc to get forward more often and someone like Song to sit deeper. While Song is away he’s the best option in the defensive midfield. The youth options aren’t ready for week in week out opposition.

Ramsey plays like Cesc, he’s a creative midfielder he’s not suited to the defensive role. Diaby is an attacking midfielder who likes to dribble/get at defenders. If they play with Cesc in a midfield three, who’s going to be protecting the back four? They did well at Wolves, but do we play Wolves every week? All three have instincts to get forward, none of them are particularly good at tackling/holding up oppositions’ attacks.

Currently Denilson is the best option in that position, I agree that he’s not an out and out defensive midfielder. But I don’t see how going gung-ho with Cesc, Diaby and Ramsey and leaving our back four with next to no support is a better option.

I think Traore isn’t out of form, he can’t play better, he has not much experience and is not the biggest talent, he is an average left back, as a 3rd choice left back ok.
Compare Traore’s performance against Everton to his one against Liverpool, do you still think he can’t improve on saturday’s perfomance?

Real takes Racing’s players and either loan them back to Racing or take them outright, and Racing takes Real’s young players and either buys them for a fee plus a buy back option for Real or Real loans them to Racing. Racing obviously gets the shit end of the stick grrrrrrrr.

Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that young forward Rhys Murphy has signed a new long-term contract with the Club.
The 19 year-old striker, who is currently on loan with League One side Brentford, joined Arsenal as a scholar in summer 2007 and signed professional terms with the Gunners a year later in summer 2008.
England Youth International Murphy has consistently proved his calibre in front of goal and scored a clutch of vital strikes for the Under-18s last season, playing an integral role in the FA Youth Cup and Premier Academy League ‘double’ winning team.
Murphy, who was born in Shoreham-by-Sea in Sussex, scored twice in the Gunners’ FA Youth Cup Third Round victory over Aston Villa and also hit the back of the net in the 3-1 quarter-final victory over Tottenham Hotspur. Rhys also hit winners in last season’s Premier Academy League Semi-Final and Final.
Since joining Brentford on loan, Rhys, who is a regular for England at youth level, appearing in the 2009 UEFA Under-19 Championships, has made six appearances and is scheduled to stay with Andy Scott’s side until 24th February 2010.
