West Ham 2-4 Arsenal – Reserves – Match Report

Neil Banfield’s Arsenal Reserve team ended their run of three successive defeats by beating West Ham United 2-1 at Upton Park this evening. A brace from Jay Emmanuel-Thomas gave the Gunners the lead before two penalties drew the scores level. Emmanuel Frimpong secured the win on a night which saw Sol Campbell play 45 minutes as a trialist. The 35-year-old is set to seal a 3 month pay-as-you-play contract within days.`

Gilbert – Bartley – Campbell – Cruise
Coquelin – Eastmond – Emmanuel-Thomas
Randall – Sunu – Merida

Subs: Shea, Hajrovic, Evina, Frimpong, Freeman.

Match Report – West Ham United 2-3 Arsenal

West Ham began brightly on their home ground, snapping out of the traps at the Arsenal backline. Freddie Sears collected possession in the corner but as he tried to skip inside Sol Campbell, the experienced defender jostled the prospect and drew a foul from the teenager. Up the other end Mark Randall’s long-range drive warmed the cold palms of Hammers stopper Marek Stech but it was the only meaningful attack from the visitors.

Fabio Daprela twice tested Campbell’s heading ability with stinging crosses before Francis Coquelin gave away a dangerous free kick after a foul on the pacy Sears. Vito Mannone made an excellent save and Arsenal went up the other end and cranked up the pressure. Randall won a corner following a flowing move and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas took full advantage of a fantastic Fran Merida delivery to glance home the opener. Goal – Emmanuel-Thomas (27)

With the Hammers on the rack Arsenal bagged themselves a second. A lovely team move involving Gilbert and Randall saw Emmanuel-Thomas cut inside from the right flank and smash in number two. Goal – Emmanuel-Thomas (28)

Bartley and Campbell made three excellent blocks to stem some West Ham pressure but in truth the contest was over as the half time whistle blew.

Half Time – West Ham United 0-2 Arsenal

Ignasi Miquel replaced the tired Campbell at half time who showed signs that he could be a useful asset if signed. Mark Randall was also replaced, Emmanuel Frimpong came on for him.

Arsenal began the second half well – forcing chances through Coquelin and Merida but Stech twice made excellent saves. Then a mini collapse saw two penalties given away, both converted by Freddie Sears after poor defending. Emmanuel-Thomas had further chances to claim a hat-trick but it appeared a draw was on the cards.

That was until Emmanuel Frimpong collected possession 25 yards out, shaped his body and curled home the third and ultimately crucial goal. Goal – Emmanuel Frimpong (83).

Fran Merida could have put the seal on the win after coming close with a curling free-kick and then working Stech with a left footed drive, but the rubber stamp was applied when Emmanuel-Thomas wrapped up is hat-trick with a stinging shot across Stech and inside the post.

J, come on. You know and I know that Wenger has seen him in action in recent weeks, both with and without a ball, but he would have been able to keep fit enough to play a half against a bunch of 18 year olds from WHU… I was not attacking you, I never do, so the whole Jesus bit was unnecesseray.

Can Campbell and Bartley play away to Stoke in the FA CUP? Was Bartley’s penalty a mistake on his part or the referees?

Question – how were you able to report this so quickly. As far as I know there were no streams, no TV coverage so you had to be at the match. Did you bring a laptop or have you some sort of moby with a keyboard and wizardy thumbs? Just curious since your report was online just a few mins after the final whistle.

    Boys, boys.. enough pickering..

I too found the use of the word “tired” to imply Campbell’s shortcomings…

If, as you argue, it just a MATCH-fitness issue then i’m personally happy having him on the squad for a couple months…

Technically a clean sheet for big Sol and a good three points for the Goonas!

No slating Bartley. He’s not even 19 and players like him will only learn playing alongside Sol.

Sol just started playing after months so he’s not match fit. Games like these will improve his match fitness. The guy is huge and great in the air. He’s a legend, winning two premiership titles and three FA cups with us is no joke.

Mannone WAS in goal and can hardly be blamed for conceding two PENALTIES.

He was not the one who fouled to concede the Penalties either – so a decent showing from the young AAAIIIItalian

With couple of injuries in miedfield shouldn’t Arsene give Jay a chance, he’s showing not from today his big talent. Versatile, tall, tough lad so as long as there are so much injuries in miedfield plus thos on AFN he should play in Cup and last mins in PL

JET with a hat-trick is good for the youngster. But to the guy who called for him to be given a start in the first team, “…slow down cowboy…”.
    ————————————————————
He’s a very talented kid, but he is just moving himself into position to come off the bench late on in a few Prem matches. He’s far from ready for a start yet. Still, his hat-trick represents a great performance today and is evidence of the immense talent this young player has. I hope he continues this form and the AW begins to bleed him slowly into the rigors of the Prem in the 2nd half of the season.

Good report, gooner17 I’d like to see Sol & Vermaelen in for the F.A. cup. Give Gallas some breather since he is probably the most likely to break down from too much game time. Bartley could be used as a sub along with Silvestre (for CBs and wingers). Just having Sol’s big build back there for our team will do a world of good on the simple stuff like corners.

ok so maybe JET’s better equipped offensively than defensively…whatever…i’d love to see him being used in the first team. He’s taller than half our first teamers, and i think they could really use more height and strength to play off of.
Diaby, Bendtner, JET, Campbell now…get them all playing!

I agree with u gunner17, we only have few tall player in our 1st team squad compare to our rivals (Chelsea, Utd & Liverpool, or even City, villa & spuds). We really need to improve on this, coz unlike some people who think that size doesn’t matter in Football, I really think that size matters. It can help u on set pieces & provides u with more attacking option (long balls, high crosses). These days, some team has exposes our lack of height by playing long balls & high crosses using tall strikers & midfielders to outplay us. This is what happent in the Chelsea game & I dont wanna see this no more please…

Alex how did Pedro Botelho play? Was he playin as a winger? We really lack wingers who can actually dribble past players beat full backs inside out whip dangerous crosses in or pick a pass out.

I think JET is at the front of a very small group of young midfielders that have a slim chance of breaking into the Frist Team. JET’s performance today is a good sign and a great example of how big a talent this kid is. He should be pushed very hard in training with the First Team and then given some chances late on the same way Ramsey, Wilshere, and Merida have been bled into the First Team.

His gift is that unlike many players his size, and thanks to the meticulous training of our youth set up, he’s got fantastic technique for such a big physically imposing player. This sets him apart not only from many of the other talented youngster in the Arsenal youth set-up, but also from most young players his age.

What is significant about his development this season is that his solid performances at Blackpool (not sure but I think he scored twice in about 6 or so starts) and his performance today seem to be solving the confusion about what his best position is. The kid looks like he will be most effective in the Diaby-esque role…an attack minded central midfielder who can assist with defensive duties when needed and is comfortable moving out wide when the flow of play dictates.

60 posts, that’s fantastic and shows the level of interest in all aspects of youth development at the club – although helped by the Campbell-debut/Wellington video/Gallindo signing/Pedro video things.

BUT could you give a bit more info on formations –
    How did they start?
(I know you’ve got a team lineup but were Randall and Merida reaally up front and who played DM/DMs?)
And how did they change when Frimpong came on?

and take a look to a young player called canales, who plays in racing de santander and i heard that wenger has him in his list.
