Ayling Joins Yeovil After Arsenal Contract Expires

Luke Ayling will join League One side Yeovil Town on a bosman transfer when his Arsenal contract expires on July 1st. The classy central defender spent the closing stages of last season on loan at Huish Park where he featured four times, three of which came  as a substitute.

Ayling was a key part of Steve Bould’s “double” winning side, but unlike centre back partner Kyle Bartley, he never kicked on. An injury hit start to this season saw him slip down the pecking order and even face a difficult return to Under 18 football. Luke confronted Liam Brady about his situation with the club, and a move was always on the cards.

Arsenal have decided against renewing his contract and after manager Terry Skiverton confirmed his intention to snap up Ayling, a deal was thrashed out last week. He will link up with Town for pre-season training on July 1st, subject to a successful medical.

Luke joins Sam Byles, Rhema Obed and James Dunn is being released this summer.

Really surprised at this news. I envisaged a loan but never a permanent move away from the club when everyone seemed to think so highly of him.

Isn’t it a bit early to say he’ll not make it? Or did he force the issue? At any rate, I think Arsenal’s 5th and 6th choice center backs should be serious contenders, not limited works in progress.
Vermaelen, Campbell, Djourou, looming purchase (would have been Smalling?) being the top four assuming Gallas leaves. Silverstre’s done. Smalling and Bartley are a little too far behind for my liking, let alone Ayling.

I wish him well – thanks for the memories.

I think it will be vermaelen, Campbell, Djourou, ? and Norvedit he has spend amost 2 and half years on loan he has worked hard and he will now get a chance with arsenal. I think
Our missing defender will probably be an experienced player someone in his 23-27 year category and maybe even from germany as scouts might have picked up on a good defender when looking at Norvedit progress week in and week out in Germany

I told everyone he wont become a good PL defender
    Bartley will
Ayling yes is a very intelligent and has an excellent read of the game but he’s slow and not rugid or tough enough for a defender if he was midfielder then it might have worked but not as a defender
Bartley is the next big thing watch out for him to make an impact with a championship side next season and who knows he might get a chance with arsenal after that

what the hell!!!! This must be a mistake! he should be given atleast 2 more years. This must mean wenger is looking for a new young centre back. This is what happens when new experiance players are coming I guess. I am 100% sure a new 22-25 year old defender is coming. Hopefully Ayling will come back in 4-5 years and become an regular.

Good luck Luke. He can take inspiration from someone like Scott Dann.
Who started at a similar age in the lower leagues and is now a pretty good Premiership player.
If he’s playing regularly and working on his game he could work himself up the footballing ladder.

We don’t no what goes on behind the scenes? I’m trying to a break from this over-zealous media world and just going to focus on the world cup! And wait for the pre-season to start. I’m gunning for the Ivory Coast to win the World Cup! Later young gunner fans talk to after the cup! World Peace Please! I love AFC forever!

Tony Alexander Adams was born on 10 October, 1966, in a rather modest house in Romford. His father Alex was a roofer who once played for West Ham reserves, then later took up football coaching. He schooled the young Tony Adams well. By the time he entered Eastbrook Comprehensive, aged 11, he was already being watched by scouts from the big clubs. There was a flurry of interest in West Ham, then he signed a schoolboy contract with Arsenal. His headmaster, Ken Drury, countersigned the document. “He didn’t let too much in the academic world stand in his way,” Mr Drury noted later.

I really am shocked and concearned ayling has gone, Steve bould, Neil Banfield seemed to rate him very highly.

Anyway, I reckon to have a future at a top European club you have got to be a prime athlete, plus 6’2″, or a vertical leap of 28″ Otherwise, how do you handle the Drogba, Ibramavich’s, Torres, Bendtner, Adebarndoor’s, John Carew, even the shorter Rooney’s of the world? Crouch! Let alone the boneheads that play up front for Hull, Stoke, Blackbone (see what I did there?) Right now the plan among most bottom teams is get the best big athlete you can find and play him across the top, and everyone one else work for him and set plays. Hell if Fabianski can’t stop these guys with his hands how can Luke Ayling?

This should provide a waking call for many poeple who post on this blog. It should serve to show that 1) we don’t know as much as we like to think we do about the quality of these young players (Wenger watches them train against the 1st team, which is a good indicator) and 2) our young players don’t have some sort of divine right to be world-beaters, as many seem to think. I think it is partly because of the couverage they get from media such as Young Guns, which is great to read, they think that the likes of J are here to fill us in on the next world-renowned superstars in our academy. If every EPL club had a site like this, every fan would think his team’s youngsters are the best.

This will open up some room for another player. I thought Ayling was highly rated, and I am very surprised this has happened. I didn’t even know his contract had run out:S I hope they all know what they are doing here. (They being the Arsenal youth and 1st team management) If Merida goes, then the same thing will happen here as it did with Ayling. It will open up room for another younger and higher quality player, like Barazite, Ozyakup, Aneke etc. I personally don’t think Merida will leave this year, because Wenger might be wary of his numbers in midfield if Cesc does leave.

Maybe it wasn’t Arsenal who let him go, but Ayling who wanted to leave? He might not have wanted to be restricted to reserve team football and the odd loan spell for years to come, a lot of young players don’t have the patience and would rather play regularly in the lower leagues than stick around on the fringes. Bartley and Nordtveit will probably have to wait another 2 years before they get chances in the PL (barring an injury crisis), until then the Carling Cup will be the best they can realistically hope for.

And for him to go to Yeovil where he was on loan tells me that it was more a case of Yeovil really wanting to keep him, and Ayling wanting to stay there, rather than Arsenal giving up on him.

I like Ayling. He seems a good kid.

This was very obviously the right decision for the player and the club. AW is definitely going to buy a center back this summer. Vermaelen and Djourou are both under 25. And Nordveidt and Bartley are far better players than Luke Ayling. He will do well as a League 1 or maybe Championship competitor but he was never close to looking like top-four defender material was he….? It’s a very good move for him to the lower leagues and I wish him the best of luck!

Steveee had a good comment above about how we Arsenal youth enthusiasts have to bring some caution to our evaluation of these young players. Many of them are over-hyped mainly out of hope that they are as good as we pretned so that they can confirm our fantasies or some twisted way we view the world. But reality isn’t all that sentimental and it’s very difficult to make it into the Arsenal first team. Only the very, very best talent can do so. Ayling is a good kid with a future in professional football but he wasn’t close to being a top, top level talent or he would never have been let go.

And for those of you who are so completely out of touch that you are shocked by this news, brace yourselves because there’s likely to be more news just like this over the summer.

If you want some comfortable places to place your hope, than become a big fan of this group—Aneke, Yennaris, Coquelin, Bartley, JET, Eastmond, Miquel, Wellington Silva, and Szczesny,—‘cuz they are the safest bets for a long-term future in the first team (…and, honestly “safe” is a relative term in this sense…you can best believe it will be very tough even for them)

If you are more of the gambling type than put your belief in—Deacon, Freeman, Afobe, Ozyakup, Watt, Lansbury, Barazite, Shea, and maybe Meade, Hajrovic, and Frimpong—as they are a super talented group as well who are probably the 2nd tier in terms of a long-term 1st team future.

Sorry, but the rest—Simposon, Sunu, Murphy, Randall, Byles, Obed, Boateng, Hoyte, Gilbert, Cruise, Evina, Henderson, McDermott, and the perpetual problem child Botelho—all look to be massive long shots to be playing for Arsenal football club’s 1st team in the future. Look for three or four from this group to move on this summer!

Get a hold of yourself…your really spinning out of control.

Luke Ayling rode the bench in League 1. The likes of Bartley and Nordtveit see regular minutes at their loan clubs, in much tougher leagues.

Ayling wasn’t good enough…doesn’t mean he’s a bad kid or even a bad player…just wasn’t good enough for the Arsenal.

Even if you live a life of fantasy thee’s always still room for just a little common sense…try it…!

For me, where a player goes on loan says a lot about his level. Ayling wasn’t starting in League One. Bartley was starting in the Championship. Ayling is a good player and might well do an Upson but right now, he isn’t physically developed enough for the higher leagues. Arsenal need players who will be ready soon and at 18, nearly 19, isn’t as good a prospect for the direction we are trying to take. I wish him luck in his career but hope he doesn’t become the one who got away.

I wonder about Barazite. Does anyone know why he didn’t get a run in the first team this season? He seems like Bobby Mark II to me and wonder why Arsene isn’t giving him a chance.

Barazite was injured for a long period this season, but he played for the reserves regularly when he came back, played really well and scored some superb goals. I hope we get to see more of him.

I would like to see us loan out some of our better youngsters to PL clubs this season. Guys like Barazite, Simpson, Lansbury, Bartley, JET, Eastmond, Szczesny, Mannone, Vela, Traore could all do a good job for one of the newly promoted sides or a West Ham/Wigan/Bolton and earn some experience at the highest level. Most of them have already been loaned out to Championship teams and many looked comfortable enough at that level for me to think another spell there or in the Reserves won’t really push them forward.

I think Barazite deserves his chance in the first team or a loan spell to a PL side next season he was injured for a long time this year but he has been our best player in the reserve this year and I think he’s ready for the PL. HE has done everything to prove his worth

Henri lansbury went to league 1, sanchez watt who was a flop at southend but done ok for leeds.

League 1 is good for toughen young players up.

Luke Ayling for me was a better defender than bartley. Bartley has the size, and physical strength but ayling seemed to more composed, better in the air, better tackler, looked more of a stylish elegant defender.

Watt didn’t do that well at Leeds and he had one good game and a few decent sub appearances. Lansbury did well in League One and then did well in the Championship. I think a decent young Arsenal player should be able to hack it in the Championship as a bare minimum. If you are fighting relegation and you get a good player on loan, you don’t keep him on the bench. The kid has potential and decent ability, that’s why they signed him.

Arsenal have to make tough decisions. Arsene has always said that once you reach 18/19, you have to be knocking on the first team door. He wasn’t ready physically. At centreback, intelligence comes with age, you cannot guarantee physical growth.

Kep thats why Luke Ayling is special he seemed to have the inteligence, reading the play, organising a defence and communciating. Luke Ayling has the compsure as well.

Wenger said when you get to 21,22 its the optimal age and still break into the first team.

Kyle Bartley may look good cause hes physically bigger and stronger but in a few years time when Ayling bulks up he could be a better defender. Physical growth and gaining power comes with age i think its a big loss and i hope we dont regret it

I play a lot of Football Manager the PC game but you can get it on some other console as well I think but its obviously not as good and doesnt have as much player but the PSP version is acceptable for the travels on the road. I play the game with Arsenal and I can confirm that I let Ayling leave on a transfer when I was playing the manager of the Arsenal club so he wasnt good enough then and in the game he went to a lower league and I think it is the same for real life. Even Eastmond who is highly rated on here like the powerhouse Benik Afobe and the hard working midfielder Chuks Aneke I did not put in the first team and they played in the reserves but won the reserve league which is a good achievement for young players. The point I am trying to make is that there are lots of players of the games of football around in the world and Arsenal have a bad youth academy lots of money spent on it but we do not produce lots of players to play in the Arsenal team but we let them go to West Ham like Upson or Aston Villa like Sidwell or Bolton like Jack Wilshere. Lots of people say Jack play for England in the future but he did not even make the 30 man squad for Capello in the World Cup even before the 23 is announced do you really think Capello got that one wrong? One player we need is a striker Van Persie is injured for all of next season and Marouane Chamakh hasnt proved he can score goals in England so he will probably be on the bench leaving Eduardo who is Croatian and Vela who will be at the World Cup so we cant rely on him to get us through many games because he will be tired and injured for long periods. I would like Arsenal to sign the young striker who is English who will be in the World Cup by next time believe me I will bet my house and daughter on it. We need to sign him Charlie Austin the very good player proved he can play in higher league so why cant he play in another higher league I think he can and I think he can win the Premiership trophy and the FA Cup and the Champions League and the Carling Cup and the Europa League and the top scorer cup and assists if he wants for the Red and White Gunmen.

Are actually basing your arguement of a video game? Your not for real. I’ve seen some stupid statements on this blog but damn yours takes the cake. Players like upson and sidwell were let go many years ago and jack Wilshere still is an arsenal player so i do not know where the hell your point is coming from. And be realistic, how many top sides in england have actually had players from the academy break into the first team. Take Tottenham Hotspur for example. There not even a ‘big four’ club but i cannot remember any academy player breaking into the team other than ledley king some odd years ago. Even John Bostock cannot get into the team and they bought him for £750,000 from palace. Not even Aston Villa have had many academy players playing in thier first team as you would think becuase they have bought a vast majority of their homegrown players from other clubs. Out of all the top clubs, Arsenal and then Manchester United are responsible for bringin in most of the top homegrown players in this country. There is a reason why they have said the england team in the future could be made up purely of arsenal players.

Mate I think, and hope, that this guy is taking the micky out of some of the other readers on here. Either that or he’s lying about having a daughter, because he’d have to be 9 years old max.

    that’s a stupid post
Gibbs is chosen before Traore because he’s better
the player who’s better play doesnt matter what his nationality is
and Ayling to me was never better than Bartley

Wenger will travel match to match for Eurosport and, in a daily update, ‘Le Professeur’ will bring fans his expert views on the day’s action and events. While in South Africa, Wenger will be ideally placed to scout for new talent for Arsenal’s impressive production line, as well as monitoring the likes of Arsenal players Theo Walcott, Emmanuel Eboue, Robin van Persie, Gael Clichy, William Gallas and Cesc Fabregas – thought doubts have emerged over the future of the last two at Arsenal, with Gallas seeking a pay-rise the club is unwilling to provide and Fabregas a major target for Barcelona.

Are ppl dumb or something hes not strong enough or quick enough HES 18 for a centre back you get stronger with age and u bulk up. This is why its so hard to jduge young players like afobe, aneke, boateng, frimpong who seem to have a superior physical advantage when they were younger and look good cause of it. But it the end the technical players always seem to come through

A defender has to read danger, head the ball and being composed under pressure. Ayling ticks all the boxes. Ayling one of these defenders who rarely gets done by an attacker. Hes two footed as well as being a passionate, comitted defender and someone who comes through the ranks. Its sad hes gone.

Grow up. Ayling would have had an impossible task trying to get into the Arsenal first team. Bartley and Nordtveit are far better and will only continue to improve. Your arguement about technical skill vs physical attributes makes sense on one level but as soon as you list your examples it shows your ignorance/bias. The players you’ve mentioned Afobe and Aneke are both far superior players technically to Luke Ayling.

Their technical superiority is even clearer when you consider that they are both far better technically and one is a year younger than Ayling and the other is 2 years younger than Ayling.

Get over it! Ayling was not Arsenal material…not even close to 1st team material and probably not a Premiership player.

Well what do you expect from a holocaust denier but xenophobia?

Of course, our squad would be so much better with the combined quality and injury-proneness of John Harper, Matty Upson, and Steve Sidwell.

Luke Ayling technically was brilliant u numpty he was the only two footed football player we have in the youth ranks.

He was a sublime talent yh he did look lightweight but youth football is about game understanding, game awareness all the physical stuff will come soon with going on loan to league 1, championship and with age.

Sorry for me he is a better defender than kyle Bartley i just cant believe it

Ok, let me get this straight…

Bartley is given a chance in a couple of 1st team matches. He goes on loan in the Championship starts several games and impresses greatly at his loan club.

Ayling has a quiet season in the reserves (which I believe was marked by some minor injuries was it not?), goes on loan to a Leagu 1 side, rides the bench behind an 18 year old CB on loan from stinking disgusting Spuds and, by your own admission, is physically slower and smaller than Bartley, yet still, you are convinced Ayling is better.

Your inabiltiy to let go of your biases makes your opinions cartoonish…you can’t be as ignorant as you try to convince people you are…can you? Grow up!

KC thank you. I am also a bit tired of reading how Lansbury is a god, Afobe and JET overrated and Ayling the best young defender.

Benik Afobe is pants been watching the game hes not an Arsenal player. Sorry he just isnt. I really like Luke grabutt the everton ex leeds left back looks really good. Andre wisdom cnt beliebe hes playing as a centre back didnt he play as a defensive midfielder against us

WIckham has actually scored goals in the championship and hes 17. Benik afobe cant even score goals in the reserves.

Omg you just opened my eyes. All the records that Afobe broke don’t mean anything. The fact that quite a few scouts consider him as one of the best young strikers in the world is just an oversight. I see now, Arsenal needs to release him so he can go to Championship in order to test his skills. Breaking records is for wussies. Thanks buddy for helping me get rid of my delusions.

Veske watch him play. I have said so many times he a world class finisher like darren bent but he doesnt have the general play to play for arsenal. He doesnt get involved with play.

Benik afobe has been taken off i have been more impressed with William keane he seems to have a bit of class.

Shame Chuks Aneke was injured i think he would be the best player in this England team in my opnion.

I have to say Conor Wickham has been disappointing as well i saw him in the championship looked quite good but just hasnt performed at all.

Yeah I saw Benik against NF. The fact that he was involved in all 5 goals clearly means he can only finish. And also goal and the assists against Czechs…. he’s Bents carbon copy

Let’s be honest. Ayling was a Chelsea supporting wannabe gangsta. If anyone saw his Myspace page you’d have laughed. Good riddance but I wish him all the best.
