U19 Euros: Sunu Scores As France Win Euros

Gilles Sunu was on target for France as they beat Spain 2-1 in the final of the UEFA European Under 19 Championship. Sunu cancelled out Rodrigo’s first half opener before Alexandre Lacazette bagged the winner with five minutes left.

Sunu and Francis Coquelin both started against the holders and the much fancied Spanish. It took just 19 minutes for the opener to arrive as Daniel Pacheco fed Rodrigo and his snapped shot beat Abdoulaye Diallo low into the corner.

France equalised after the restart as Yannis Tafer exchanged passes with Sunu following a slip by Martín Montoya, and the Arsenal front-man lobbed Spain goalkeeper Álex to put Les Bleus level. As the fixture ticked on, Alexandre Lacazette came from the bench and with 5 minutes left, he headed home Gael Kakuta’s cross at the far post to win France the trophy.

Congratulations to the boys. Both appear to have very bright futures playing for the French NT. Thanks JS!

That was extremely quick J.. I was watching and dont you think that Sunu was awesome.. A tireless performance running all over winning balls, tackles.. tracking back superbly.. he was an absolute livewire.. the goal was excellent (his touch, run, and then the finish).. Sunu was MOM according to me.. Coquelin put a solid no-nonsense comoposed shift.. I was really impressed by the French No. 5 Sébastien Faure.. This defender really covered the mistakes of his defensive partner very well but was very harshly booked for an excellent challenge on Iker Muniain in the dying minutes….

that was an amazing game. Gilles Sunu is an outstanding talent. He fought hard for the goal against Spain. He also played extremely well in the other games. Against Croatia he hit the crossbar with a fantastic effort. Coquelin was doing well too.

After the game Sunu said in an interview that several French clubs are interested in him (I hope for loan). He isn’t allowed to name them though. I hope that he will get some Ligue 1 experience.

Yannis Tafer is also a great player. What a shame that he plays for Lyon. But I guess that if Wenger sticks with Arsenal for a few more years we can have a chance of catching him when his contract is about to expire.

If Sunu could put in the same commitment for ARSENAL that he did for France today I would surely like to see him in first team.. His work rate was astonishing and he was quality….

I posted these questions in the previous article (if someone knows please reply) – Youngsters in squad for Emirates Cup..?? Any chance of Barazite, Lansbury and Eastmond playing..?? Will W. Silva be training with the first-team during the next two weeks..?? I feel each of our keepers will get a half each in the Emirates Cup….

I have had a season ticket at Derby County in both season Nacer Barazite and Giles Sunu have been there, Barazite will never make it at Arsenal, Sunu is very inconsistent but at a tender age that is expected, he makes good runs and dribbles well but sometimes his decision making is poor, however again can be expected.
Looks much better prospect than Barazite but still has a lot of work to do to make it at Arsenal.

and by the way incase you wondered why I’m on here, I was just wondering how the best team in England (other than Derby) are doing.
As an outsider looking in, all clubs have them i suppose, but people who ask for Wenger out are ridiculous, one of the best managers in the world nevermind Europe, great manager, great club, great future, good luck on your hunt for silverware!!

Thanks for those comments, nice to see grown ups from other clubs on other club sites. Can I ask what about Barazite dosn’t convince you, nobody seems to sit on the fence with him. He seems like Marmite you either love him or hate him. By the way does the average DCFC fan want more quality young loan players coming in or is it viewed a bit of a stop gap ?

He always seemed to fail to deliver the ‘killer’ ball, don’t get me wrong he is not the worst player i’ve seen and could make it in the prem and would happily have him at Derby, however at a top 4 club when playing against a park the bus defense I don’t see him making it with the likes of Wilshere, Ramsey, Nasri, Emmanuel-Thomas (looked brilliant when i saw him at Pride Park) all looking brighter prospects, pretty much the same as Jay Simpson, nothing wrong with him, just misses that something special that makes you a cut above the rest.

As for taking players on loan, I enjoy seeing them play (not just Arsenals youngsters), Thomas Cywka from Wigan was fantastic for us, however sometimes they can frustrate with their inconsistency.
If we got offered JET, Frimpong, Bartley, etc. I wold bite your hand off, it is amazing how quickly Sunu grew, he had 2 awful performances and got subbed off but then all of a sudden he was unplayable and gained a MOM performance before he got injured.
to answer your question, yes they are only a stop gap, but while they are here they are enjoyable to watch as even in a bad game, you can tell they have been bought up the ‘Arsenal’ way, or atleast they try to play that way.

Why should he get either if he plays or not.
He doesn’t deserve a response in my opinion, he went to AC Milan when he was an established first team player at Arsenal arguably better than AC Milan anyway, so who knows his reasoning but he made a career choice, I believe he has paid the price by being an AC Milan reserve so there is no need for either, why should we clap a one season wonder or jeer someone who means nothing to us.

Sunu’s interview after the game showed he is very level headed, sounds a smart kid.

Spain was by far the better team IMO, they should have killed France in the first half. France came back in the second half thanks to some great fighting spirit, but Spain were on another planet technically

2 years back , the same teams with many from the set of starting XIs met in the under 17 championship where Spain ripped the French side 4-0 and now…revenge !

    Winners

    1. Gael Kakuta (C.F.C) – The Chelsea lad showed why he has worth all the arbitration trouble. An absolute livewire who played well above his age. Chelsea can throw him into the first team right away. His untiring effort created the second goal, where he followed up his own blocked shot till the touchline and crossed in for Lacazette to score.

    2. MIDFIELD TERRIERS
Oriol Romeu(Barcelona) – He looked like the only legit Defensive midfielder in the whole tournament along with Faure. Calm , composed and ruthless. He actually looked like he found his way into the wrong tournament, U19 seems to be too easy for him. Sublime tackles , easily holding onto the ball.
Sébastien Faure(Lyon) – Leader in the central mid.. period ! Kept winning challenge after challenge in the second half. Never let the Spanish attack settle

    3. Yanis Tafer(Lyon) – Controversially left out of the first match after top scoring at the u 17s two years ago. Created France’s first goal as soon as he came on. Played all over the front line causing troubles to the normally composed Montoya. Will hear this name in the years to come due his uncanny physical and footballing resemblance to a young Benzema. See pic.

    4. Pacheco(Liverpool) – Once again put in a solid shift. Good on the dribble , excellent power on his shot. Somehow the supply did not work as usual. Pool fans have a gem at their hands , should put in a few substitute performance come next season.

    5. Olympique Lyon – Outside of Kakuta , all the players who actually contributed to the victory were all from the OL. OL fans(if any in the DL) can be thrilled at the talent coming out of the academy
    a. Yanis Tafer (set up the first goal to send Sunu through 1 on 1)
    b. Lacazette(scored the winner)
    c. Faur (midfield battle against Romeu, Alcantara , Canales)
    d. Kolodziejczak – The left back looks like a ‘more than decent’ backup for Aly Cissokho

    6. SPANISH FOOTBALL – My oh my ! Barring the final , one can only envy the tremendous amount of talent that took field. Probably deserved to win , but France “fought” harder. Tiki-Taka at its best. Seemed developed physically and most players look ready or needs a year max to play at the top flight. Keko , Koke , Munian , Pacheco , Romeu , Alcantara , Montoya , Moreno , …etc
will all be common names come 5 years time. The play like they ve all been connected by some imaginary wires.

    7. FRENCH FOOTBALL – they youngsters showed something that the senior NT lacked – Pride and fight !

Losers (only due to the expections they carried in)

    1. Sergio Canales (R.M) – A harsh call. But with the expectations he carried , should have finished off the game in the first half itself. Looked out of sorts in the second half when compared to his partners Romeu and Alcantara. May need a year to mature to a top flight player, which he would as his finishing gets better.

    2. Griezmann – The French youngster who is an integral part of the Real Sociedad setup, earned so much of the coach’s trust that , they started the game with him alone upfront, couldn’t do much and had to be substituted. Les Bleus scored immediately after he was taken off.

    3. SPANISH FOOTBALL – in the second half , Spain looked like every Spanish NT before 2008 Euro i.e. Unbelievable talent on display, understanding, chances to put in 3-4 goals early on……………. lack of fight, confused centre backs , lot of possession, a tactical error from the coach in subbing the goal scorer, which eased the pressure on the French mid.

Both centre-backs have none to blame but themselves for letting in those French goals, getting outrun and caught out of position.

Ok i take that back :)

Sunu & Coquelin worked their behinds off in yesterdays match. They werent exactly “stars” due to the positions they played maybe. The write-up was based on a neutral POV. Some players with other “DNA”s that we could buy.

Runbi, we must have seen a different game.
Griezman was injured. He should have been substituted after he received a knock. The French coach should not have waited until half time. he was shown with a big ice pack on his ankle in the second half.
Kakuta is a great talent but sometimes he tries the flick and show boat. On Lacazette goal he first miscontrol the ball and the defender go the wrong way. He then tried to score and got lucky that his shot became a cross that Lacazette headed in.
Faure played in central-half defense and not midfield.
Coquelin is the most important player in midfield. Fofana the other defensive midfield does not have the nous of Coquelin. Fofana was extremely lucky to stay on the pitch. He could have received a second yellow card for persistent fouling. Nothing nasty, but he kept being too late. Coquelin on the other hand not only succesfully screened the back four, but also was able when he had the opportunity to inject thrust forward. Against Croatia Bamkambu goal owned everything to his raid.
At half time, the coach told the player to have a chat among themselves. Clearly the captain Fofana did not do his job. The one who was motivating the rest of the team was Sunu. On his equaliser he jumped for the goal Keeper Diallo high field punt. He then race into space and took his goal very well.
I am afraid but France and Lyon left back was the weak link of the French team. Spain clearly identified him as such. They kept going via his side.
The U17 final was different in a sense that Spain used a lot of gamemanship. Also most of Spain goal came when France was chasing the game.
The U19 Spain clearly suffered from lacking a proper goal poacher.

Im pretty sure we saw the same game :D

      1. Dint quite realize greizmann was injured, but like i said , loosers only cuz of the hype before

      2. Im pretty sure i saw Faure play a little higher up than a cb :| , he did look like he was winning mid battles , must be my bad :P

      3. Once again , i ve not mentioned Coquelin & Sunu as it was a little away from an Arsenal POV

      4. About Kakuta , he did show undying will to whip a shot/cross while Spain were complacent and i dont think theres anything wrong in appreciating that. Other than that , he looked extra comfy on the ball with pressure on him. Judging from a u19 POV, impressed !

      5. Would have to disagree about the left back. Kolodziejczak. In the second half he did work well dint he ? He did play against the “Keko” and did quite well IMO. Offensively he dint do much. But he hustled and showed energy and he looks quite developed for a 19 yo.

      6. Any opinions about Romeu ?? :)

    Runbi,

    2.
You are the only one who saw Sebastien Faure as a midfield player.
    he is a centre half.
Faure and Mavinga were the two France centre half.
    The back four was:
    Right Back: Loïc Nego
    Centre Half: Sébastien Faure
    Centre Half: Chris Mavinga
    Left Back: Timothée Kolodziejczak

Just in case you are still not convinced, here the UEFA Sebastien Faure card:
    http://www.uefa.com/under19/teams/player=1908190/index.html
Also in France Sebastien Faure is registered in league 1 as Centre Half by Lyon.

    3.
I mentionned Coquelin and Sunu not with my Arsenal Hat, but with my French Hat.
Some French commentators mentionned Coquelin as a potential replacement for the France Senior team (the entire World Cup 23 France squad players have been suspended for the next friendly by the French FA).
That’s how Coquelin impressed in France.
Regardiing Sunu, I was impressed by the fact that at half time he took charge. I was expecting that from Fofana. A Captain should lead and IMHO Fofana did not lead.

    4.
Yes Kakuta’s will can be appreciated but the fact remained that he mishit his shot and that became a good cross. You cannot then congratulate him on the cross itself. he admitted himself in the French interview that he got lucky but he does not care as along as we win.
He is a great talent, but he tend to fade from game. He is also very greedy and show boaty. That nearly cost France a goal at the beginning of the second half.

    5.
Timothée Kolodziejczak was the weak link, everybody saw it except. The reason he was more on the ball than the right fullback was that Spain kept trying on his side. Moreover the few time he went forward his crosses were overhit. On the other side, Loic Nego did not go forward as much as he could however the few time he went he sent some vicious crosses.
Timothée Kolodziejczak had an big physical advantage against his Spanish opponent. However at senior level he is likely to not have that advantage. Unfortunatelly for him technically he is a level down to the rest of the team.

    6.
Romeu is technically good.. I am not sure that he is likely to replace Pedro or Messi. Barcelona kept producing the same kind of players, smallish technically gifted. However IMHO Barcelona and Spain need a bigger, nastier single minded striker. Eto was perfect for them.
But again I am not convinced that Barcelona produces the kind of striker that they actually need.

Once again , Kolodziejczak played as the left back.

Spain generally attack through the right where Montoya/Keko play (see the other games and you would know), not sure if they were targeting him. And i said he d make a decent backup , not a starightaway starter.

Regarding Faure , in the second half when France pressed , he played higher up and intercepted/won aerially against the Spanish mids. Not quite sure if the referees enforce that the player play in the position that they are registered in :)

    Runbi,

    Faure played in his position.
in the second half, France decided to press Spain more and higher.
That resulted in long ball from the Spanish defense.
That is why the French centre halves had more defensive headers.

Regarding France left back Timothée Kolodziejczak, in every France reviews he had the lowest note. Once again you are the only one to say that he had a great game.
Usually Spain plays through the middle, however against France they tried predominantly via the right. They did not get any change from Nego and Faure. They were activelly targetting Thimothee and Mavinga rather than Faure and Nego. They were right, often Mavinga had to bail out him. When Mavinga messed up Faure was then to mop things up.

Regarding Romeu, I did not say that he was a striker in the classic sense, just that as a offensive midfield he is unlikely to replace Pedro.

Let’s agree to disagree on the players and the game.
Let’s just agree to support Arsenal.
