Wilshere Nominated For Golden Boy Award

Jack Wilshere has been nominated for Tuttosport’s Golden Boy award for 2010. The prestigious accolade is handed to the best player, under 21 years of age, over the past year. It has previously been scooped by the likes of Cesc Fabregas, in 2006, and was claimed last year by Alexandre Pato.

Tuttosport published their nominations this afternoon, naming their 40 candidates for the award, with Wilshere an early front runner. British talent is scarce on the list, with Jack being one of only two English players named. The other is Aston Villa’s Nathan Delfouneso.

However, UK based talent does feature heavily, with Manchester United’s Rafael, Federico Macheda and Bebé joined by Gaël Kakuta from Chelsea, Dani Pacheco from Liverpool and Manchester City’s Mario Balotelli. Former Gunner Fran Mérida is also included.

You can cast your vote, plus see all the candidates via the Tuttosport website.

Dzagoev’s the front runner at the moment but hopefully Jack can catch up, but I think maybe Jack doesn’t deserve it as much as some others as he’s only had a quarter of a season in Arsenal’s first XI whereas the other candidates have been regulars for a few years, e.g. Hazard and Dzagoev. Nevertheless, Jack does deserve to be up there.

Just to let you know J, Arsenal have added Ignasi Miquel and Oguzhan Ozyakup to their CL squad as they’ve recently turned 18. Miquel is 48 and Ozyakup 51, confirming what I predicted, that certain numbers were left out to cater for those who would become eligible throughout the season.

    Bebe? ….BEBE!?

Did anybody watch the quality of his crossing against Wolves? It was side-splittingly funny.

They must have included him just to make up the numbers, surely.

What Wilshere has done is just as impressive and Hazard. He is playing CENTRE MIDFIELD FOR A TOP CLUB!!! And he’s actually playing a bit out of position, as he can play in a more advanced role than where he is playing now. I think in the future he will take over Cesc’s role. But he can also play where he is playing now just fine!!! A bit like how Scholes plays for ManU. He’s versatile, durable and he has forced his way in to playing for us weekly. He has forced Wenger to play him because of the quality he has displayed and I think this is just as impressive as what Dzagoev and Hazard have accomplished. All 3 are great young prospects but I think what Jack has done is just a bit more impressive than what those other two have managed to do. Think of it like this…he has forced Nasri to play a different position, Rosicky to appear as a substitute and has displaced Denilson and maybe even Diaby from a 1st team position. I know some of these players are injured, or have been injured, but still, this is very impressive. Durability is a key ro success and Wilshere looks like he has this in abundance!!

nasri to play out of position? nasri has mostly played on the wing ever since coming here.

nasri’s rightful position is the in the position cesc plays now, offensive central midfielder.

Wishere is currently 4th in the voting, behind Douglas Costa, Andre Felipe and Alan Dzagoev.

Those three ahead of him are all 20 years old, where as Wilshere is just 18, and they play in weaker leagues than the Premier League (Russia and Ukraine). Also, Wilshere plays in a deeper position with greater defensive responsibility, and where there’s less time and space. The other three are given much more freedom for their teams.

Taking all that into consideration, Wilshere would certainly be deserving of the award. He probably won’t win it though. Never mind, there will be plenty of accolades coming his way soon enough!

@milo: Couldn’t agree more my friend
@hiro: U better take second look on how nasri plays in CM position, he is average compare to wilshere. I mean, eventhough his original position is in CM, that doesn’t he has the ability to play the kind of CM role that Cesc plays for us in our current formation (i.e. CM playmaker). He is way behind Wilshere and Rosicky in the pecking order.

Given how two players for Russian teams have suddenly jumped significantly ahead, something very dodgy seems to have gone on in the vote. It’s far too easy to corrupt these sorts of online votes when no registration or captcha is required.

A lot of non Arsenal fans didnt even know who he was until he went to Bolton, so I can imagine people worldwide don’t really know much about him until he starts performing in Europe and getting more games in the premiership. You can’t expect him to win an online poll after like 9 games. He wasn’t even good on football manager until this year and judging by this list they have a comprensive system of football manager scouting :)

To win this kind of thing you need to be attacking and score, simple as that. Why do you think it’s always Henry, Messi, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Lampard, Gerrard etd coming close to winning prizes and not Essien, Makelele, Ashley Cole, Vidic and Lucio.

    Just watched u-tube upload {good one Andrew}, JET’s 1st goal was a cracker.I reckon 2 or 3 of our YoungGunners would benefit from a loan,namely Aneke,Sunu & Murphy.

It’s Wilshere all the way based on this season. I doubt he will win it because of politics relating to raising the popularity of the game in eastern Europe (read Dzagoev as winner). But, for me, it’s Wilshere comfortably based on his loan with Bolton and his play with us thus far.

As Wrenny mentioned, it’s the relative competition of the leagues the front-runners play for that influences it for Wilshere. An 18 year old delivering solid to excellent performances week-in-week-out in the most competitive league in the world has to have a great deal of weight.

The boy is a revelation! His development is phenomenal and his to do it at his age makes him a very special talent.

It would be nice for him to win it, but this isn’t anything to bother about if he doesn’t. Jack’s got many more indivuidual trophies coming his way over the next 12-14 years…!!!
