Wenger Backs Szczesny Ahead Of United Start

Wojciech Szczęsny will make his first Premier League start for Arsenal tonight, as the Gunners take on Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Speculation had been rife since the early hours of the morning that Szczęsny would play, but it was only confirmed earlier this evening, when Łukasz Fabiański failed a fitness test. The 25-year-old is not fit enough to start, but has been named on the bench.

Wojciech arrived at Old Trafford in good spirits, laughing and looking relaxed. Arsène Wenger spoke about Szczęsny’s first start ahead of kick off, saying:

“He has the confidence, the quality and it is important the defence plays well and he has little to do. But I have confidence”

Kick off is at 8pm. You can follow updates on how Wojciech gets on via our Twitter page.

Fabianski, not fit enough to playbut named to bench, from which he may be needed to play at any time? This makes no sense.

What happened? My guess is that Almunia was dropped and Wenger has been telling white lies to protect either himself or Manuel – and now that Fabinski is injured Almunia told Wenger to take a hike. So Fabianski is on the bench bluffing, but not fit to play at all.

Fucking arsharvin. I hate him. He is crap. We play with 10men when we have him in the side. He is useless. Wenger out. Another chance blown and it’s only half time. Had enough. Wenger out.

not a title decider but the performance? wow!!!. i dont even feel angry! dunno what manure players were saying to ours, but it worked!
so much i could say about the performance but id be here forever.
not the tactics i would have gone for as i said yday on another blog but its easy to criticise the manager with hearsay.
the only conclusion i see is attitude, said it before, too often it stinks in my opinion. granted the ref tried to kill it off but my bias off him faded through out.
bottom line is they didnt turn up just like when ramsey got whacked! im struggling to find what will motivate these players to the professional level manure are at. they didnt play that well but were they sloppy? unmotivated?
but like i said it aint the title decider ill judge him in may.

My thoughts exactly. The attitude is one i’ve never seen before – from any team. This bunch can’t get fired up for ANY game. I’ve noticed this all season long. We should be sitting comfortably at the top of the table right now but our stinking, lousy attitude has caused far too much complacency and ultimately, failure. Only the management are responsible for this. Like you said, manure didn’t play well, they just wanted to win a football match – we blatantly couldn’t be bothered. I’m getting sick and tired of watching AFC play with no urgency whatsoever. Certain players don’t deserve to wear this shirt. They have no clue what it means to wear the shirt!

So you see the man is staburn and never learns. He ruined my night with that french bastards (excluded sagna) . He has no tactical plan for such a big game. That fat old red face intended to shut ou our attacks and stop us from attack their box and the counter .tell what wenger planed for the game ? The players run out of ideas even before they score the goal. What was that cygonquillaci doing? It’s an absulate disgrace. Our best defender is djurou at the moment and yet did not play. Wait for the mental strength preach and the usual excuse.

another average performance against the big boys- at this stage I think it must be psychological- at least if we can beat all the other average teams we can still win- watch this space

I thought that Szczesny passed the test with flying colours!!:D His distribution was a little poor on a couple of occasions, but aside from that I thought he played very well. I wasn’t concerned at all about any of the crosses that came his way. I have noticed that he catches the ball well with his HANDS and doesn’t wait for the ball to hit him when he jumps like some other keepers I have seen do. He doesn’t fumble the ball either when it hits his hands. It sticks!! Which is exactly what we need to have happen for our defence to gain more confidence in their keeper. Fabianski has been very good too, but sometimes he drops crosses that he should be easily catching. He has improved, but Szczesny is just as good if not better than him already, in my opinion.

He did well and I have been impressed with him whenever I have seen him. But he does need to improve his kicking, if it continues he will get us into trouble somewhere down the line.

I really believe JET should be giving 90 minutes for two consecutive games he’ll show some killer instinct for goal..more than AA,MC he needs to play? Also give Sunu a chance ahead of AA? Trying to stay positive right on about WS great hands needs to work on kicks! Peace

Szczesny’s not ready to be no.1. This was clear from his performance at Newcastle where he rushed out of goal unnecessarily and then palmed an easy free-kick back into the danger zone, and now we’ve seen that his kicking also needs to improve some.

It’s no good making great stops and being dominant in the air if you then make a mess of clearing a ball up field.

You can’t take risks with the goalkeeping position like you can with forwards. We’ve just got Fabianski settled and playing the best he’s ever played and some of you want us to f*ck with that? Szczesny will be ready when he’s ready, right now he’s still too raw to be no.1 and the no.2 position is perfect for him.
