Arsenal Agree Oxlade-Chamberlain Deal

Arsenal’s six month persuit of Southampton winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is nearing an end, after the 17-year-old arrived at London Colney for a medical.

Oxlade-Chamberlain had already visited Colney earlier in the summer, after Southampton gave him permission to hold talks with Arsène Wenger. However, the two clubs failed to agree a fee, and the player returned to the South Coast.

Yet Arsenal re-opened talks over the weekend, and have found common ground with a structured £12 million fee. Oxlade-Chamberlain has already accepted terms on a long-term contract, and the deal is expected to go through before the close of play this evening.

More to follow.

Not the priority signing but a great signing nonetheless. Happy with a new addition to the squad. #DEEEENCH

By structured what do you mean exactly? How much is being paid up front and how will that affect other potential signings?

I genuinely do care about the youth but I’m not sure about this particular kid and I’d rather have a player like Mata who would prove valuable for this season.

Will wenger ever sign an adult again?

This obsession is getting out of hand. 10 kids signed in the calender year to date, none of whom can provide anything to the squad next season.

Do we only care about dominating at youth level these days?

I hope the OX can turn out for the first team straight away and make an impact. We are definitely bringing in more British players……bodes well for the future.I think they would be more committed than the ‘foreign legion’ @ the club

Good that Wenger isn’t adding just for adding’s sake. That he continues to try and build on youth shows just how committed he and the club are to making Arsenal a long term success.

I dont want Arsenal to miss out on signing youth players that could be world class just cos some fan thinks we should spend millions and end up like leeds if things dont go well. 91, please dont make me laugh, if you were supporting during 94,95 then you would know what bad really is. I assume this deal was pushed through because Miyaichi didn’t get a work permit (I heard he wont get a permit anyway).

But he is class anyway and he should be an England player of the future. can he play this season? Maybe he can.
If we lose Nasri then he replaces him in the squad. Nasri played out wide last season.
I have high hopes for him and if this deal had been done the day AFTER we bought a centre back, the reaction would have been a lot more positive. But everyone knows we need a Samba/CAhill/Mertesacker desperately. I am convinced that player will arrive at some point.

Good points. Maybe they should’ve delayed ’til the Central Defender was bought… Sadly i think they don’t know if, who or when that is.

We’ll get rid of Arsha and Nasri by the time Oxlade is ready + Theo will move into striking position (permanently or from time to time). Besides Oxlade has the ability to play in the central attacking role, behind the striker.

When you say everybody knows we need a central defender, then that is getting to the point excactly: Bolton, Blackburn, Everton and Werder Bremen knows how much we need one, and will hold their poker face until they burst. Sadly; I guess Wenger is folding his cards before calling their bluff.

      hear hear.

i’d like to add that those who are complaining… voice your opinions elsewhere. it’s somewhat hypocritical, and idiotic, to complain about a youth signing on a youth site. it’s tiring to read the same complaints over and over again.

if you came here to deliberately read about youth players you’ve clearly come here to read about this type of thing so why complain about it being a youth/kid?

if we buy somebody like mata then he HAS to perform immediately and show his valuation was worth it (i’d like us to get him btw so don’t go there). but if we buy 3 or 4 younger players for the same money it costs to get 1 mata… then we could afford for a few not to make it. this is not an immediate solution to anything. it’s an investment for the future, that may help us immediately but most likely not.

other teams have spent more and got nothing good back from their investments. bebe anyone?

This is the “super quality” signing that wenger promised?

Arsenal are going to need alot more then a 17 year old. Personally Chamberlain just joined Arsenal to use the gym, i bet his father had a massive say in the move.

In the future when a chelsea, man city or united even come knocking for Chamberlain, after he’s finished using our gym, he is off to another club, and arsenal will probably never reap his peak.

I heard that Chamberlain is a Chelsea supporter, so there you go. Same goes for Bellerin who already announced his desire to go back to Barcelona one day..another cesc anyone?

I hope Chamberlain and Bellerin enjoy the gym…beginnings of a stepping stone club?

I like Oxlade-Chamberlain, and I am not certainly not one to blame youth signings for first-team failures, but this does strike me as a little odd. Yes, we still have an obligation to invest in youth, but wouldn’t it have been more prudent to spend £5 million more and get Phil Jones, who we apparently were unwilling to pay the required £17 million for before Man U swooped. He would still have been a player for the long-term, but has proven Premiership quality and experience, and in a position which we hugely need to strengthen.

That said, I’ve been very impressed with the little I’ve seen of Oxlade-Chamberlian. He’s a little raw, his timing of runs and general sharpness of movement needs some work, but he has excellent technique and some real pace. Naturally, if he fulfils the potential that Arsene sees in him I will look back to this signing as an excellent, brave piece of business.

to u and all those with similar comments that we could hav signed either mata lukaku or bojan with a little more money.mind you.its not buying vegetables.buying a player has lot of aspects.most important is player’s desire.its not that we didn’t try to sign jones.he chose man utd exactly the same way ramsey chose us.even our offer was accepted by blackburn.bojan is an barcelona outcast who we dont know would even fit in english conditions.lukaku too was interested in chelsea.chelsea overpayed for him.even madrid did not compete for him as he is still not established.how can u expaect us to pay 20 m pounds for a player who is not yet established.its unfair given our budget.and remember arsenal would only pay 6.5 million for chamberlain.only if he turns out good we would pay the full amount. so it is a risk worth taking.regarding mata,we can not sign him now.what if nasri stays 1st nasri situation should be resolved.also even if fabregas goes and we sign mata what about ramsey then.so mata is a possibility when either of fab or nasri goes.try to understand its is a club.things dont work like that.its not like buying grocceries.

Oh and the argument that you shouldn’t complain about Arsenal youth signings on an Arsenal youth site is completely illogical. Just because you have an interest in the goings on of Arsenal’s youth set-up doesn’t mean you have to support everything that goes on. It’s like saying you shouldn’t check you’re mail because one letter may contain a parking fine.

On the other hand, people complaining that low-cost investments are destroying the first-team are clearly misguided.

I don’t think you’ve thought that one through. If you’re going to complain, complain that we haven’t signed seniors, not that we’ve signed kids. The top non-oil clubs are all signing kids: Barca, United, Madrid, Liverpool. The kid-signings must go on, but we must also be signing the players we need now.

Again, welcome to Alex and all the best to a great career at the best club in the world.

I think the point was that complaining about youth signings on this website because of lack of first team signings doesn’t make sense. YG is about the youth and reserves. To come here and whinge about the first team is pointless. There are many “fan” sites where one could go and discuss first team issues.

Furthermore, to slag a youth signing off just because of frustration with the transfer policy at Arsenal is absurd.

This one wasn’t low cost at all…12 million can do a lot better than this

    • August 8, 2011 at 4:03 pm
      Permalink

@Savage: I’m not saying we should complain that we’ve signed kids, but it is foolish to think that signings such as this has no bearing on the first-team. Clearly, a signing such as that of Serge Gnabry has little to no impact on first-team affairs, but when we shell out £12 million on a player there is a substantial opportunity cost. E.g. I am happy that we signed Chamberlain, and welcome him to the club, but I do question whether the money would have been better spent on Phil Jones, who we refused to pay £17 million for.

@Jonathon: As above I agree that, in most cases, youth signings have little impact on the first-team, so it is nonsensical to complain about them with regards to the first-team (the signing of Oxlade-Chamberlain not being one of those cases). However, this is not to say that Arsenal’s youth and reserves are irrelevant in the context of the first-team. Oxlade-Chamberlian will not be playing u18/reserve team football next season, certainly not for all of it anyway, and I would be surprised if he wasn’t regularly training with the first-team. He may be a young, but Arsene will be thinking about him within the context of the first-team. The site does specialise on the youth and reserves, but talking about all these players solely in the youth/reserve context is naive and myopic and doing so would be to the detriment of this site. I agree with you that putting blame on a signing for being signed is indeed totally absurd, but questioning the decision to sign him is another matter.

i usually don’t moan about wenger buying young players because its usually a good thing that we get them, and they do pay dividends for us later on.

Just that, if arsene can sanction a 12m move for an unproven 17-y/o, why not 30m for mata or 18m for Cahill? Why not?

His quality is not the issue, had he been signed at the start of the summer, the fans would be buzzing about him.

We are in the last week before the season, and have seen us lowball bids for targets that could revitalise the first team, this OAC bid should be over and done with, what the hell are we only rapping it up now for instead of the priority area signings.

Bizare stuff to say the least, we bid less for Jagielka.

Jags isn’t worth his club’s valuation, nor does Cahill. If Wenger goes out and allows clubs to hold Arsenal hostage over transfer fees just because we supposedly “need” a CB, he will find it much harder to make any sensible deals in the future.

    • August 8, 2011 at 3:53 pm
      Permalink

You miss the point, we were never going to bid more than 15m for either, the gap between being held hostage, and making insulting offers that give the selling club no incentive to sell, is huge.

Whether it’s Jagielka, Schwazer, Mata, whoever, we low ball and expect people to crumble, when we never do ourselves.

Why are we supposedly waiting on Fabregas money to buy, and at the same time spending money on a player that could have been bought at any time.

Come on guys. If Wenger didn’t care about the club, he would do the lazy thing and just spend lots of cash and hope one the buys becomes a success. Just like a lot of fake managers I know (eg Harry Redknapp). I really think that he is trying to get the best value for money. Maybe where he is lacking is his stubborness in playing only beautiful football. If you are lacking quality players (thru injury, etc), you can still play ugly and win.

Welcome to Arsenal….the place where we bitch about everything and have no realistic perception on anything.

Look, I would love if we signed a Hulk or Falcao but it just is not going to happen. If we have learned anything from the Hazard situation, we must sign these players early before their price sky rockets or we are never going to have world class players here.

I am not happy about everything going on here but one must admit, that it must be difficult as hell to bring in established stars when Man City is offering 200k a week in wages and players like Pastore are costing 37 million when our record fee is 16 million. We have to strengthen but we have to be realistic.

It’s getting worse when people assume transfers are as easy in real life as they are in video games. Doing all of this within a hard budget is not easy given the utter contempt many other teams are showing towards fiscal responsibility.

As Shane pointed out: we have to be realistic. A bunch of rich blokes playing fantasy footy with their clubs should not be the model which we follow.

Some of you fans make me sick. How many Managers have had such an impact on a club like Wenger? Most managers just come in and there only job is to win games like Alex Fergusen who took over a club that was already massive. Wenger pretty much took over a Everton or Tottenham and turned them into a top club. We finished 16 seasons in the top 4 before Wenger. We have finished in the top 4 now 15 times in a row. We have made it to our first champions league final ever. We won trophies and had a undefeated season. We moved from a 39 thousand seat stadium to a 60+ thousand seat stadium which Wenger played a massive hand in. We have still stayed at the top of the league and went far in the champions league while paying of our debts. How many managers would willingly make that sacrifice for the clubs long term success.

Look, I am not preaching that everything is perfect at Arsenal or with Wenger but I do no that with out him, there is no way we could compete with the super rich short term or long term so show some respect.

Everton or Tottenham did not have two league titles in the previous six years.

Let me make clear, I don’t disagree with any of what you have said to support Wenger but you can twist those statistics to say that George Graham won trophies over 2/3 of his seasons at the club (5 in 8) inc in Europe. Wenger has failed to win a trophy in 2/3 of his (10 in 15).

His top 4 record is phenomenal, even more so for the expense, but he didn’t inherit the shit from Don Howe or Terry Neil, Graham did that, turned it around and Wenger built further on that (bar one interim crisis season which too much is made of).

I hope he does well with Arsenal, he certainly has the appetite for it – C !!!

It’s got to the stage where people who criticise Wenger are saying one of two things: either ‘I’m a troll’ or ‘I’m an idiot’. As Shane and the other reasonable posters have pointed out, we’re not Man City or Chelsea – we’re Arsenal. We work within the limitations we have, and if that means that we’re not competing for trophies because we can’t afford to – well, the same goes for almost every club out there, apart from, er… Portsmouth.

One thing for sure is that Wenger gonna buy a defender before the end of the window.
Another thing for sure is that the boy is good and just like we have seen the heroic rise of Jack, we wait for heroic exploits of AOC.

I guess some will be sold or loaned before the end of the window, not everyone will make it unfortunately.

Oxo said he wanted to play in the PL so I wonder if Wenger promised him some game, he is a first team signing in a way but I don’t see him getting games apart from Cup games against lower opposition and the CC. Enough is said about the lack of experience and leadership in the first team than we already know. It’s unfair to push them in without that balance right.

People need to see the bigger picture, I know this a blog for the young players but you have to realise Wenger hasn’t got it right for six years.

He is investing alot into the youth team or youth prospects but needs to change his philosophy slightly and spend whatever available funds we have on to strengthen the first team on proven quality players so that you can keep your top players happy. They want to win trophies like the fans. It is best to try to do the best possible with what you have rather than boast about profits and coming 4th.

A lot of people just talk and dont think.

First of all we currently have both Arshavin and Walcott as wide strikers. Gervinho is Nasri’s replacement, while Wenger squeezes the max out from Man City for Nasri, even though many of you struggle to figure that out.

Then Ryo is in place as the 4th option at winger.

This leaves this kid to quietly bed in as the next generation of attacking midfielder in 2-3 years, in the meantime he may do some spot duty on the wings as a last choice, much like Wilshere did two seasons ago.

So no, this isnt from any current budget – its just the normal ongoing business that Arsenal has been doing for ages, keeping the replacement lines filled in advance.

    Utterly clueless “fans”…..
