Video: Arsenal Sign Barcelona Cadete Toral

Arsenal have agreed to sign Barcelona midfielder Jon Miquel Toral, according to Catalan radio stadio Rac1. A fee of €350,000 wil change hands between the two clubs in the summer.

Toral is a current Spanish Under 16 international and is a regular for Barça’s ‘Cadete A’ side, which will take on Arsenal’s Under 18′s at the Dallas Cup in the summer. Arsenal met with the players English mother last month, and the family have agreed on a deal.

Rac1 also report a similar approach was made for Toral’s midfield partner Sergi Samper, although this was immediately rejected.

The €350,000 fee is a training allowance, which is seen as a good will gesture by Arsenal. However, the signing of another of Barcelona’s prize assets will no doubt anger the Spanish Champions once more.

You can view a video of Toral in action here.

Miquel Starts Against Leyton Orient

Ignasi Miquel will make his debut for Arsenal against Leyton Orient in the sixth round of the FA Cup this afternoon.

The 18-year-old, who captains Arsenal’s Reserve team, enjoyed a brief spell in the first-team squad earlier in the season, making the bench for the Carling Cup semi-final with Ipswich Town and then for the Leeds United game in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Ignasi has never played under Arsène Wenger since his transfer from UD Cornella, but has trained with the first team on a number of occasions.

He will wear the number 48 shirt.

Loanees: Vela & Lansbury Score, Afobe Assists

Welcome to this weekends Loanees Watch – Young Guns’ analysis, reports and updates on the progress of the young starlets currently plying their trade away from the Emirates Stadium. You can read all the latest reports below.

Carlos Vela came off the bench to play the final 20 minutes as West Brom drew 1-1 with Wolves. Vela came on with the Baggies 1-0 down, but immediately helped raise Roy Hodgson’s side. He first tested Hennessey with a right footed drive from the edge of the box, before finishing from close range in the 91st minute after Hennessey spilled James Morrison’s shot. The point was key in West Brom’s battle to avoid relegation.

Kyle Bartley played the full 90 minutes as Rangers lost 3-0 to Celtic in the Old Firm derby. Bartley was rested from The Gers’ Europa League clash with Sporting Lisbon for this game, but he looked a sluggish at times in a central midfield role as The Hoops cruised to victory.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas came off the bench and played the final 34 minutes as Cardiff City lost 2-1 to Nottingham Forest. Emmanuel-Thomas did have two excellent chances to score, both from long range efforts which Lee Camp saved. Aaron Ramsey was not included in the squad.

Henri Lansbury started and played 74 minutes for Norwich City as they drew 2-2 with Leeds United. Lansbury scored the Norwich equaliser on the stroke of half time, volleying home from inside the box. Henri then delighted the crowd with one of his trade mark dances. He was replaced in the second half after looking tired.

Sanchez Watt missed Leeds United’s 2-2 with Norwich City through injury.

Vito Mannone missed Hull City’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town through injury.

Craig Eastmond was an unused substitute as Millwall lost 3-2 to Middlesbrough.

Benik Afobe came off the bench to play the final 17 minutes of Huddersfield Town’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth. Afobe looked bright when coming on, leading up to picking up an assist for Danny Cadamarteri’s 89th minute equaliser.

James Shea was not in action this weekend as Southampton’s fixture was postponed.

Mark Randall was not in action this weekend as Rotherham’s fixture was postponed

Gavin Hoyte started but came off injured after 12 minutes of Lincoln City’s 2-0 defeat to Chesterfield.

Ryo Miyaichi played the full 90 minutes as Feyenoord drew 2-2 with ADO Den Haag. Miyaichi again started on the left wing and despite a quiet first half, he turned in an excellent second half shift, winning various free-kicks. Ryo was also victim of a horror challenge late on, in which the defender only received a yellow card.

Francis Coquelin missed Lorient’s 5-1 win over Bordeaux through injury. Gilles Sunu was fit but was not included in the squad.

Armand Traoré was an unused substitute as Juventus lost 2-0 to Lecce.

Wellington Silva was not included in the Levante squad that lost to Real Madrid

Pedro Botelho played the full 90 minutes as FC Cartagena beat CD Numancia 1-0. Botelho returned to left back following a run of defeats and impressed, keeping a clean sheet as Cartagena edged it.

Samuel Galindo missed UD Salamanca’s fixture this weekend through injury.

Rowley Scouts Feyenoord Defender De Vrij

Steve Rowley was in Holland on Sunday to watch Feyenoord’s 2-2 draw with ADO Den Haag. Rowley was at the Kyocera Stadion to watch on loan winger Ryo Miyaichi and defender Stefan de Vrij.

Arsenal’s Head of Scouting was primarily there to make a report on Miyaichi, who is on loan with Feyenoord until the end of the season. The 18-year-old has earned mass attention from his three Eredivise games so far, which has led to Arsenal banning all interviews with the prospect, in a bid to calm the hype surrounding him.

Rowley was not just there to watch the Japanese youngster, though. Respected Dutch TV outlet Studio Voetbal confirmed he was also making checks on 19-year-old Stefan de Vrij, who is rated as one of the best young prospects in Holland.

De Vrij is a six foot two inch versatile defender, who can play either centre half or right back. He has been a regular in the Feyenoord side this season, picking up a number of rave reviews due to his battling displays and impressive leadership.

Studio Voetbal host and journalist Jack van Gelder said a deal for de Vrij could be done in the summer, for a fee of €3.5 million plus the extension of Miyaichi’s loan until the end of next season. This is thought to be speculation but Arsenal’s interest in the promising defender is expected to continue.

Stefan is contracted to Feyenoord until the summer of 2012.

Arsenal Remain Keen On Swedish Duo

Arsenal remain keen on Swedish youngsters Kristoffer Olsson and Robert Mirosavic after the pair completed second trials with the club.

The duo were invited to Arsenal in November, where they played in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Charlton Athletic. Olsson scored while Mirosavic also impressed in a 6-0 win. Liam Brady promised to contact both in the New Year to take a second look.

Olsson was initially the only one called back earlier this month, but Mirosavic then arrived shortly after.

Kristoffer, who plays for IFK Norrköpings, played for the Under 16′s against Crystal Palace in between watching the first-team in action against Wolves and Barcelona. The 15-year-old left a thoroughly good impression and was told by Brady he would like him back for the Ferrolli Cup at the end of the season.

Mirosavic also left on very good terms. He attracted attention after bagging 49 goals and 24 assists from just 45 games for Helsingborgs IF’s youth team. He is a currently Swedish Under 16 international and has been offered a youth contract by Helsingborgs, as he has turned 16.

However, Robert is holding out for an offer from Arsenal. He told the Swedish press after arriving back in his homeland he expects a firm answer on whether he will be signed shortly.

Brady On Wilshere & Barca Influence

Arsène Wenger said Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Barcelona in the Champions League showed just how far his current crop of players have come. However, for Academy boss Liam Brady, the result will have ramifications far and beyond the present team.

No stranger to playing in massive occasions, Brady spoke to the BBC this week about the game and what it means for Arsenal’s potential stars of the future. He began by hailing his boss.

“It was one of the greatest nights in Arsenal’s history. It will inspire generations of young Arsenal players.”

“It is a tribute to Arsène Wenger and his philosophy. You can spend £50 million on a player, but you can’t buy team spirit. He’s one of the most astute managers of all time.”

The tradition of giving the Reserves and Youth players tickets to the game continued on Wednesday, with most of the Under 18′s being present, sat behind the bench, watching on. Brady believes that kind of education is priceless.

“The youth team were at the game. What a privilege for Arsenal’s kids to see Messi, Xavi and Villa running their socks off for the team. It’s a phenomenal lesson and matches like these build their dreams.”

The Man of the Match was arguably Jack Wilshere, who was outstanding in a central midfield packed with the biggest and best names in the game. The Academy product was part developed by Brady, and he can’t be more proud of how Jack has turned out, and the legacy he’s left from Hale End upwards.

“Jack wants to be one of the worlds best. Going head-to-head with Xavi and Iniesta was amazing. He has everything to reach that level. Wilshere mixed it with the worlds best and that shows how much Wenger trusts the Academy.”

Whatever happens in the second leg, the first leg victory has left a firm imprint on the clubs staff and players.

Wolves 2-2 Arsenal: Freeman does it again

Arsenal came from behind again to secure a 2-2 draw on a cold, rainy away trip to the Midlands at AFC Telford United’s New Bucks Head stadium. Wolves went 2-0 up early in the second half but goals from Henderson and Luke Freeman penned them back, with Arsenal going close on several occasions near the end.

ARSENAL: Martinez, Hajrovic, Boateng, Miquel, Brislen-Hall, Henderson, Ozyakup, Murphy, Aneke, Freeman, Afobe

Benik Afobe was eligible to play in this game due to his loan being a ‘youth loan’. This means he can take part in reserve games when not on duty with Huddersfield.

Arsenal made a sloppy start and took a while to find their rhythm. However despite this the first chance fell to Arsenal with Freeman continuing his good form with a run down the right resulting in a lovely cross for Chuks Aneke who’s improvisation so nearly resulted in an early goal for Arsenal. His acrobatic shot went just over but it was only a minute or so before Arsenal had another chance with Hajrovic heading just over from an Ozyakup as the Gunners started to get into their side.

Freeman was again threatening along with Henderson, both having shots blocked and fired over the bar respectively – Brislen-Hall was also having a very good game, providing a cross for Afobe but the man on loan at Huddersfield couldn’t quite turn and get his effort away. Arsenal were by far the better team but were as yet unrewarded for their efforts.

Boateng was called into action to clear as Spray threatened, the defender did a fine job too preventing what would have become a very dangerous situation. It was Wolves first meaningful attack but it was quickly reversed with two more good chances for Arsenal following.

The first fell to Freeman, who steered a tricky chance into the side netting and then Brislen-Hall unleashed a monster of a shot which ended up safely in the hands of the keeper. Brislen-Hall is not one of the star names in the reserves but he was having a very enjoyable and productive evening as he threatened once again.

Wolves, however, took the lead just a couple of minutes later. A free-kick – so often the downfall of the first team – was floated in, knocked back into the six yard area and Spray tucked it away. 1-0.

There was still time before the first 45 was up for Martinez to take command of his area and Aneke to attempt a volley.

The second half started slowly and things got worse for Arsenal, Bia Mujangi converted a cross and they found themselves 2-0 down with much of the second half left to play – they would have to come from behind again.

Henderson clawed a goal back almost immediately, converting a brilliant free-kick and giving Arsenal the kick up the rear they greatly needed to get into their stride again and it wasn’t long before the ball was in the back of the net again. It was Afobe who scored this time but it was flagged offside after the keeper spilled another effort from Henderson.

It was still 2-1 to Wolves when Martinez was forced into a brilliant point-blank save to keep the difference down to one goal and was quickly rewarded as Luke Freeman struck again to get the two sides back on level terms.

Luke missed from a narrow angle earlier on in the game but he was not to be stopped this time as he squeezed the ball home, the comeback kid had done it again and Arsenal were looking good for a win, and continued to create chances.

Arsenal had a long spell of pressure but nothing came from it as the final piece of skill was missing but Miquel started a lovely move for Brislen-Hall to burst forward and into the area, he could have taken it upon himself to shoot but chose to square the ball to Afobe but the pass evaded the Huddersfield man – chance gone, and possibly with it the chance of salvaging a win.

Miquel had not finished yet, though. He fired in a thunderbolt which crashed into the crossbar.

A fair share of the spoils, but Arsenal will regret the missed chances. Luke Freeman will be pleased with his contribution after another good game.

Loanees: Ryo & Lansbury Score; Bartley Assists

Welcome to this weekends Loanees Watch – Young Guns’ analysis, reports and updates on the progress of the young starlets currently plying their trade away from the Emirates Stadium. You can read all the latest reports below.

Carlos Vela was an unused substitute as West Brom drew 3-3 with West Ham.

Kyle Bartley started and played 70 minutes on his debut as Rangers beat Motherwell 6-0. Bartley played in an unfamiliar defensive midfield role but impressed, opening the Motherwell defence with a brilliant pass which led to the second goal. Manager Walter Smith confirmed after the game Kyle will continue to play in midfield.

Aaron Ramsey played the full 90 minutes while Jay Emmanuel-Thomas came off after 59 minutes as Cardiff City beat Scunthorpe United 1-0. Ramsey turned in a good shift in central midfield, but Emmanuel-Thomas had a mixed time. He made life very difficult for Chelsea loanee Ben Gordon in the first half, but the home fans became frustrated with too many flicks and tricks which didn’t come off in the second.

Henri Lansbury started and play 63 minutes for Norwich City in a 2-1 win over Reading. Lansbury opened the scoring in the 16th minute, side footing home from the penalty spot after a good pull back from the wing. Henri, who was in action for England Under 21′s in midweek, was rested just after the hour mark.

Craig Eastmond was an unused substitute for Millwall as they drew 1-1 with Sheffield United.

Vito Mannone missed Hull City’s 1-0 win over Preston North End through injury.

Sanchez Watt missed Leeds United’s 2-0 win over Bristol City through injury.

Benik Afobe came off the bench to play the final three minutes of Huddersfield Town’s 0-0 draw with Oldham Athletic. Afobe, who turned 18 on Saturday, was looking for a birthday goal but did not get enough time on the pitch.

Mark Randall played the full 90 minutes for Rotherham United as they beat Oxford United 2-1. Randall played some excellent passes in central midfield but struggled after United went down to 10 men.

Gavin Hoyte missed Lincoln City’s 2-0 win over Morecombe through injury.

Ryo Miyaichi played the full 90 minutes as Feyenoord beat Heracles Almelo 2-1. Miyaichi opened the scoring with a delightful left footed strike in the box, then started the move which led to the second and winning goal. You can watch Ryo’s goal and read a full scouting report on the game here.

Gilles Sunu came off the bench to play 37 minutes for Lorient as they lost 3-1 to Monaco. Francis Coquelin missed the game through a thigh injury sustained with France’s Under 20′s, but Sunu came on as a striker and looked bright despite failing to score.

Armand Traoré missed Juventus’ fixture with Inter Milan through injury.

Wellington Silva was not included in the Levante squad for their fixture with Almeria.

Pedro Botelho played the full 90 minutes as FC Cartagena lost 3-0 to Barcelona B. Botelho returned to his preffered position on the left of a front three, but had little service as Barça B cruised to victory.

Samuel Galindo missed UD Salamanca’s fixture with Gimnàstic through injury.

Arsenal Take A Second Look At Olsson

Arsenal have taken a second look at Swedish midfielder Kristoffer Olsson. The 15-year-old trialed with the Under 18′s in November along with fellow countryman Robert Mirosavic.

Liam Brady put the youngsters through their paces over a week long training stint last year. He also gave them a run out in a behind closed doors friendly against Charlton Athletic, where Olsson scored in a 6-0 win. Brady was sufficiently impressed and told both players he would like to take another look in the New Year.

However, only Olsson got the call, and he arrived in London on Friday. The prospect currently plys his trade with IFK Norrköpings, who play in the Swedish Superettan. He spoke to the local media about the trial before leaving for the Emirates.

“I never thought I would hear from them, but my agent said they were very impressed with me. Because it is the second time I’m going, I feel more secure, and less nervous about it. I know what to expect.”

Olsson has previously been subject of interest from Juventus.
