Wenger Admits Admiration For Arda Turan & Video

Arsenal manger Arsène Wenger has added to growing speculation by confirming his admiration for Turkish winger Arda Turan. The Gunners chief is currently working for French TV station TF1, but is not scheduled to cover any more fixtures, and could return to London over the weekend.

Wenger was commentating alongside fellow countryman Larqué during the coverage of Turkey V Croatia, and with Turan having another impressive night, attention soon turned to the link between Arsenal and the Galatasaray winger.

Larqué was keen to squeeze information out of his co-worker, and jumped straight in saying:

“Arda is a very good player Arsène?, and we all know you like him?”

Before the competition began two weeks ago, the Frenchman told BBC Sport he would be taking his cheque book to the tournament, and has clearly done his research on the 21 year old.

“Yes, he is an extremely good talent, one of the best in the Turkish squad”

Arda is currently the 4th top scorer at Euro 2008 with two vital goals, and has played an important role in Turkey’s remarkable success to date. He has been compared to former Gunner Robert Pires, but also Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo, for his scoring and creative abilities. The young Turk recently said he would be keen to move to either England or Spain.

“I’d like to play either in England or in Spain,”
“Okan, Emre and Arif Erdem are admired by everyone in Turkey.”

Galatasaray would be able to command a fee around the £10 million mark for his services, and with Alexander Hleb set to move on during the summer months, could provide a fresh attacking option. Turan can operate all over the midfield, but his best position is in the famous “Pires” position cutting in from the left hand side.

You can see some clips of Arda in action below.

Oh my gosh, J, you are really going down in my eyes. Wenger says that Arda is one of the most talented guy in the turkish squad, and you write an hole article about it? Gosh, if that happend every time Wenger says something positive about a player, you need to write 5-6 articles every day during the Euro.

He is quality, I could not believe he was 21. He was the only player on the pitch apart from Modric who looked composed every time he had the ball, even in tight positions with 3 men around him he could pick out a pass or dribble through-he can only get better.

J: On a ten minute interview on the bbc website, he says that arshavin is a very good player, are we buying him as well? no. you are getting the masses sweaty for nothing. Neither are coming.

The Diogo thing is interesting though, although the quotes sound very familar to the ones you had months ago. I think he’s one that might be of genuine interest regarding transfers though.

Thanks for the info, It’s a shame really, I think signing Milligan could have been a great marketing move to boost already growing interest in Arsenal in Australasia. Also Aussies seem to make a good transition to the Premier League(maybe a cultural thing?), and he was rated as a no nonsense defender/midfielder.

Anyway, just read on the BBC that Ronaldo has confirmed what we all knew and wants to join the ‘biggest club in the world’.

I liked your previoused work, but writing an article about that Wenger said that Arda is a good player and making that to that we might sign him, that’s a huge step.

And the funny thing? You don’t answer on our things. You can’t just belive that everything you write is correct and then write a new article so that the last discussion is forgot. Man, you’re losing readers on that. Maybe we want to discuss, but then you come with your atittude and says that we are shit and you don’t care about your readers.

JS, any truth in our interest in Arshavin?

Myles Palmer just posted an article claiming him to be the best player at the Euro’s, and I have to agree. Since watching zenith vs Bayern in the UEFA Cup I have been blown away by this guy.He has only played one game at the Euros but was outstanding.

He may not get people excited as Ronaldo but he is world class, he produces in every single game. Regardless of the opposition he makes goalscoring chances, and most importantly he has the correct mentality as well as talent.

Not very sure about Arda, how come he’s remained relatively low profile until now?

I don’t know, I’m rather suspicious of players who do well in internationals, the might not do as well in club football. Also, the record of turkish players in the bpl doesn’t help, none of them have been that successful.

Still, if Arda Turan really can be that good consistently then he would be an excellent addition to our team.

England have named their provisional U-19 squad for the summer. Kieran Gibbs is in the squad but no Randall or Lansbury:
    http://www.thefa.com/England/U19s/NewsAndFeatures/Postings/euro_provisional_squad_announced.htm

The U-17 squad has also been announced. Aneke, Banton, Freeman and Oliver Nicholas are all named but amazingly, neither Jack Wilshere or future Spuds cunt John Bostock are in the squad. Can anybody explain this to me? They were both in the last squad and were not named for the U-19. Obviously it´s not a matter of talent, as Wilshere is miles ahead of both Freeman and Banton and he would probably be the main star of this team.

Best player at the Euro’s??? He’s played one match.

It seems that every few months a player is propelled forward with the aid of media exposure and the fans of the clubs linked with him lap it up religiously. It’s almost as boring as the “he’s the next [insert great player he will never emulate here]” tag that’s flying around.

Sneijder has been the best player in the tournament thus far. He’s played against Italy and France and performed exceptionally well, contributing 2 goals and 3 assists. Arshavin has played well in one match against an old and jaded Sweden team.

Get a grip and stop trying to sound cultured by backing the underdog. Sometimes ‘the best’ are the best for a reason.
Arshavin is a good player…but so are many others.

Keep up the fantastic work Jay and hope you all have a great summer holiday guys.

Angelo, I havent judged him on just one game. It’s based on what he provides, he is so productive, every touch he makes seems to lead to a scoring chance or successful cross.

As an Arsenal fan I have a tendency to look for the unfashionable and low key names, because those are the players Arsenal go for, we are not a ‘big name’ team.

I am not purposely trying sound cultured, its just the way I have learned to look at football thanks to Wenger.

Arse&Nose you didn’t put it like that at all. You wrote that you agreed with Myles Palmer’s claim that he was the best player at the Euros. From whichever perspective you now claim to have meant it it’s still a ridiculous and naive statement. Almost as naive as Myles himself stating that he is, and I quote here

“15 times better than Malouda, 10 times better than Hleb, five times better than Robben, and twice as good as Wesley Sneijder.”

That is truly idiocy in its purest form expressed in words.

If you mean he is the best player you’ve seen going into the euros then I don’t think you can maintain that argument. If you mean that he is the best player currently playing in the euros based on his performances in the competition then again I think that would be a very short discussion on your part.

Just say that in your opinion he is a good player, I don’t dispute that. But when people like Myles attempt to praise a player in order to sound as if they know something that we don’t it’s just annoying…and as a result makes them sound borderline retarded in the process.

If I was United I would sell Ronaldo and get Sneijder as a change and then buy Arshavin. Those two on the flanks would be much better than having Ronaldo. I seriously think that selling Ronaldo, as long as buy a cover, will be beneficial to United, just like selling Henry was to us.

I would prefer Asharvin over Turan but neither will come to Arsenal unless Wenger loses the battle to keep Hleb. Creating chances is not Arsenal’s problem anyway, its keeping clean sheets and not conceding silly goals.
RVP should really stop building himself and his team up. Everytime he does he either gets injured or the team gets dumped out of a competition just like holland tonight.

Like I said, Arshavin is a good player. He’s 27 and I’m glad he’s finally getting his time to shine [it took him a while] like many others have before him. But Sneijder is 24, playing for Real Madrid and I really don’t care what you say but Wesley is better than Arshavin.

And no, I don’t get what you’re talking about because this is probably [and this is not a dig] the fifth time you’ve ever seen the guy play. I’m guessing both Bayern legs, Rangers in the final and a couple of matches in the Euros. You need to put things into perspective.

P.S. Sneijder was being played out of position for the majority of the match and got an assist.

First, I think it’s ridiculous to slate Jamie for pointing out that Arda’s a good player and that Wenger said so. He didn’t say we’d sign him. Why are so many Gooners relentlessly negative?

Try doing a blog of your own and see if you can produce a tiny bit of the constant stream of updates and information — rather than speeches — that we get from Young Guns.

As for who’s coming and going, as always it’s absurd to try predicting what AW sees, what he thinks and who he’s hoping to buy. Just wait and we’ll know eventually. Calm down, everyone. Wenger’s record speaks for itself.

Last summer everyone was disappointed that we “only” signed unknowns Eduardo and Sagna.

One of them was named the league’s best right back by the PFA and a broken leg suffered by he other cost us the title. That’s how outstanding those “unknowns” proved to be.

Let AW do his business and then let’s support the club on the pitch.

Year after year, the criticism and doomsaying turns out to be unfounded. For goodness sake, we finished four points from the trophy and were screwed out of the CL by two awful calls.

It was a great year that club after club would die for.

Can’t we just enjoy all the talent Wenger has assembled and the football it produces?

Sometimes reading all these comments makes me want to leave my computer off entirely.

Bottom line: Arsenal will be there or thereabouts in the title race again despite being financially sound while other clubs spend fortunes that most don’t have.

We should be thrilled, full stop.

Wenger is more interested in Roman Pavyuchenko than Arshavin. And Wenger will put in a serious bid for Arda Turan because he is neither pires nor cristiano. arda is a new ribery and that is the kind of player wenger likes. he missed out ribery last season and he wont let this one slip away easily this time. Pavyuluchenko will come in to replace adebayor and Arda will come in to replace hleb. arda on the left and walcott and nasri to compete for the right midfield position.

As a Galatasaray fan I assure you, he is top class..
He’s been playing in the main team for two years now. In his first year, GS played in CL and Arda was chosen the man of the match, i think twice.. And he is getting better.
There was the one match against the third of the league, really important for the championship, where he made a hat-trick and also played amazingly.
He is so good that Ali Sami Yen can be filled just to watch him..
If he wasn’t suspended against, I wouldn’t be this much afraid of Germany.
He is 21 and he can really improve, i hope he gets the chance. Arsene Wenger -and the British press- could turn him into a star.

Arshavin in Euro 2008 reminds me Hasan Şaş in World Cup 2002. Şaş was 26 back then, impressing all the viewers, getting the transfer offers… He prefered staying at Galatasaray where he slowly faded away -the coaches didn’t help him anyway-…

Whatever, I hope Arshavin and Arda do the best for them…
