Arsenal's Coquelin & Sunu Set To Miss Season Opener

Arsenal youngsters Francis Coquelin and Gilles Sunu are expected the opening fixture of the new Under 18’s season, after the pair were called up by Frace Under 18 coach Francis Smerecki for a three day training camp at Clairefontaine.

The camp will take place between the 25th and the 28th of August, meaning they are unlikely to feature against Everton on the 23rd, and will be rested for the trip to Wolves a week later, due to the strenuous manner of the training whilst at the Centre Of Excellence.

Steve Bould missed out on Gilles Sunu for similar reasons a the begging of last season, and will once more be without the newly signed professional. Smerecki has named the same squad which lost the UEFA European Under 17 Championship final to Spain earlier in the summer, and although Coquelin was named in the team, an injury during a trial period at Arsenal meant he missed out.

Coquelin’s participation is once more in doubt due to injury, after he picked up a knock whilst on first-team duty in Hungary as the Gunners drew with Szombathelyi Haladás. The full extent of his problem is not known as yet, but it’s believed to just be a slight concern meaning he should be able to link up with his team-mates ahead of the clash.

There was no place in the squad for Arsenal’s other young Frenchman, as Cedric Evina – who is yet to feature at international level – was not selected.

I personally think that it is a shame that Giles Sunu does not stay away from Arsenal permanently because from what i have seen of him he will never make it here IMO

    Yep

he would have played alot more i reckon should he not have been injured, his brave and strong approach really helped us against both Barnet and Haladas.

J, if you check this thread, do you know how many of our first team and youth players are injured at the moment (and details about their specific problems)? I know that diaby, djourou, nasri and traore are injured, Murphy and Coquelin from the u18s, as well as ovbiously Rosicky and Eduardo. Lastly, i’m always impressed by the speed of your match reports, much faster than any other sites so congrats on that and a great site overall.

It concerns me how often Coquelin is injured. I know that teenagers are often injured due to changes in their body and so forth, but I just hope that he doesn´t end up as an injury prone player who never fulfilled his potentials.

I refuse to rule out Sunu. He might not have impressed much but there is something we do not see. If there was nothing, Wenger had never spent 2 millions on him. Song was awful at first but Wenger knows that the development of young players is not a linear graph. Some are really good while young but hardly improve while others might blossom later because they lacked some key ingredients, like strength for example.

Why are people posting just to point out mistakes? It’s so pathetic. I hope we make two signings, it would just show that effort is being made to improve on the weaknesses of the team. That’s all the majority of the supporters want, I think.

Arsene likes to go for players who have just returned from injury, just because it makes them cheaper, but if they’re injured already; they may end up like: Van Persie, Rosicky, and Coquelin. It’s sad that he has to use that tactic. I don’t want us to be spending stupid money like some of the others, but I think £10 million or a bit more is not too much to spend on a number of targets that meet your requirements.

It is good that they are training with the international team as that will give them much needed training and exposure!

Looking foward to seeing Coquelin turn out for the Reserves. Also will be interesting to see Wilshere, Nordveit and Emmanuel Frimpong play for the reserves.

that argument again. I was watching inter vs Seville the other day when I started to wonder. The game was so incredibly boring that I only lasted about 5 minutes before I had to turn it off or risk dying. Then I thought: If an angel stood in front of me and told me Arsenal could win all the trophies in the world, but we would have to play Jose Mourinho football, would I accept it? My answer was an absolute no. I want to win the EPL so bad, believe me. But I do not want to watch Arsenal play horse shit football. Football is supposed to be entertaining, and if every team played Jose’s football, what would happen to the entertainment value? Nobody would watch anymore and the teams would go bankrupt. So basically, the purpose of a football team is to win trophies while still playing attractive football. Therefore, it can be considered cheating to play football a-la the Portuguese wanker. So plenty of trophies for me, but never leave the commitment to play the game as it was meant to be played.
