Player Of The Month – Sep 09 – Sanchez Watt

Striker Sanchez Watt has collected the Lamb Awards sponsored Young Guns Player Of The Month crown for September 2009, after the exciting forward made great strides in both the first team and Reserves.

Sanchez’s month began on the 1st with a trip to the Midlands to face Birmingham City in Reserves League South. Operating down the middle in a revamped 4-3-3, the pacy forward took just 33 minutes to open his account with a superb finish. His season was up and running and three further Arsenal goals later, the quick-silver prospect completed a comfortable 4-0 rout with his second of the game.

He was also named on the first-team bench for the Champions League win over Standard Liege, but he didn’t get off.

On the 14th Sanchez made his second start of the campaign, again in the Reserves. He was replaced at half time as the Gunners won 1-0 against Stoke City. It was apparent his removal was due to the impending Carling Cup game with West Brom.

A week later ‘Young San’ was handed a surprise start in Cup. 68 minutes into his first team debut at a packed Emirates, Watt put Arsenal into a deserved lead, turning home Carlos Vela’s spilled shot. Vela went on to add another in a 2-0 win.

It was the end to his month, but three goals, including one for the first-team, stand Sanchez is good stead for the future.

You can’t knock what he’s achieved recently but it all seems to be @ the expense of young Rhys Murphy, is he still injured only I still think Rhys is a more natural finisher @ this time in their careers.
No disrespect to Sanchez after all I’m sure I read he’s an old hackney boy somewhere before, & if true well nuf said.

Congrats Sanchez, he’s in great form and deserves it. It hasn’t been at the expense of Murphy it is just he’s seized the opportunity and delivered when required.

It will always be harder for Murphy to impress Wenger as Murphy although a fantastic prospect is a more conventional striker whereas Sanchez, Sunu & Barazite are able to play off the flanks or behind a central striker and Wenger has always preferred those. I certainly think Murphy can make it but he will have to have a great injury free run, and get enough games which I don’t know if the reserves will give him. It would be great for him to go out on loan to a Championship or League one club to acheive this.

Yeah Sanchez is from Hackney Lee, he’s representing right now. Poor Rhys has endured injury hell for almost two years now and this has slowed down his progress but it doesn’t mean he’s finished. He’s a great talent and i have faith in him. He’ll be back to his best in a few months time if he can stay injury free.

I agree he’s a better finisher than Sanchez but Watt outdoes him on everything else bar movement off the ball which Rhys is a young master at.

JS – The goalscoring sidebar still shows Sanchez as having 2 goals, Craig Eastmons has 2 now and Rhys Murphy has 1, needs updating mate.

Well Watt is not that good. But JET sucks and Lansburry is a god :D:D

Anyway Watt is turning out to be a really good prospect, something that i didn’t expect.

Great vision, quick brain, decent tecnique, hard working man and a great passer and finisher. Fully deserves it. Eastmond and Coquelin have been so good too.

Excellent news for Sanchez, a player of which I’m a huge fan!

Got my 54-Watt home jersey in the mail last week, wore it first time during the reserve game against Chelsea, and what do you know? He scores! :-)

    Congratulations Watt!

    Great blog as always JS..!

Watt started pushing up during the last stages of the Youth league and cup games. For instance, he scored 3 goals against Liverpool back to back. I think this the achievement that made Arsene look at him critically and saw some potential in the boy. In fact, that first goal against Liverpool at Anfield was the ‘bullet’ that destroyed them. Ever since, he’s not looked back.

Many fans underrated him and are even shocked about his meteoric rise, JS inclusive. Watt will definitely make it now. Watch him play once more in the Carling Cup against Pool.

He had many attributes to be a good striker (lightning quick, good finisher, good off the ball movement) but was slightly on the small side. In the past 6-12 months he’s grown in stature which i think made AW think this guy can make a good striker as he can take the hustle and the bustle CB’s will give him. When he fills out and grows into a man’s body (next couple of years) this boy can be a top, top striker.

Stuart Robson even mentioned during the Chelsea reserve game how last year he started the season as a winger and Sunu was preferred up front but towards the end of the season Bould swapped their roles. I think this is a direct result of Sanchez’s growth spurt.

Just great to see so many young lads now coming through the system that appear to be right-up-there with regards to the quality required to perform @ prem level.
So if we now also have some real competition in the reserves/youths for places well it’s only good for them, the club, & the future for all concerned.
Long may it continue & it’s great we are now talking about English lads as apposed to AW’s seemingly previously preferred intake on theses pages theses days.
