Fulham Reject Arsenal Bid For Chris Smalling

Arsenal look set to miss out on highly rated central defender Chris Smalling after Fulham reportedly turned down a bid from the Gunners and have instead accepted an offer from cash-strapped Manchester United.

The club have been making regular checks on the former Maidstone United defender after he broke into the Fulham first-team, and news emerged last week that Ivan Gazidis had approached the Cottagers and were readying a bid. Arsène Wenger refused to speak about the potential deal and suggested it would be better for both sides if they kept everything quiet until a deal was done.

Manchester United have now been alerted to his availability and this morning two formal offers were made for the England Under 21 international. Arsenal’s – believed to be around £7 million – was rejected while United’s was accepted and they have now been given permission to talk to the player. There is no news as yet to whether the club will return with a second offer.

u know what I really don’t believe Smalling has signed for united yet…I think Man Utd are doing all they can to push Arsenal out of the picture by using their website & sky sports.

Nowhere does it say Smalling has signed and nowhere does it say how long for. All that is said is that fulham have agreed terms along with Smalling.

I believe Smalling’s representatives have indicated to united that the terms on the table are acceptable…but he could be willing to talk to us too.

Just my opinion I could be totally wrong and the lad could be in carrington by now for all I know…but something isn’t right and this is typical man utd.

He hasn’t signed yet, he is in the Fulham squad for tonight and SAF wanted to have things signed and sealed before the game. Thats not to say he wont sign tonight / tomorrow, but as it stands there is no pen on paper with the boy’s signature. The website is United trying to hurry the deal along.

The buy buy buy brigade are at it again. Only happy when the club buys and heaven forbid we loose a player to another top four club – absolute disaster. Nordvelt has had a year of top flight football in Germany and he returns next season. Who heard of Vemaelen before Wenger sniffed him out – Believe in Wenger and stop moaning about buying. Wenger has one golden rule when buying – does it improve what he has. Everybody is crying out for a striker as a critical need yet the TEAM has more goals than any other. ???? Look at Pool with their star striker, always injured and the Team can’t score enough in his absence. Hell look at the problems had when Henry got injured, the team lacked goals because everybody depended on him to score. Wenger plays a team game and again he buys when he can improve the team.

His mum has said that he is joining United and that his brother is a huge United fan – that indicates that as a family they have no predisposition to supporting a local club. He has probably joined united because Vidic is rumoured to be leaving and its a chance to develop a partnership with Johnny Evans in the long term, whilst learning from Rio Ferdinand (who is said to have a similar ball playing style).

Without trying to get all psychic on you guys, I think that more often young players will start to choose other clubs. Not because you arent great, but because the quality and age of your first team makes it difficult for anyone to imagine breaking through. For example how is a young talented midfielder expected to break into a midfield with Fabregas, Ramsey, Denilson, Diaby, Nasri and Song? So much experience and talent and also REALLY young. Thats probably why Merida wants out – even if he has as much talent as them they already have more experience and they are improving at a similar rate. Uniteds golden generation blocked the paths of everyone bar fletcher, oshea and brown (who arguably stayed because they werent even that good and were happy to accept squad roles). Only recently have they started to get good players coming through again and even then most of them move on to get games ie Pique and Rossi. Fabregas will eventually leave, which will probably make room for wilshere but it is the curse of the golden generation that essentially kills the system that develops it. I might turn out to be wrong, but I would think both you and barca will pay for your success in the same way United have. Not that Im suggesting its a bad thing – just look at the trophies united and barca have won, once their golden generation matured!
