Cardiff Confirm Arsenal Interest In Defender Matthews

Cardiff City chairman Peter Risdale has confirmed that Arsenal are tracking 18-year-old right back Adam Matthews, who has been subject of talks between the Bluebirds and Manchester United.

Talented Welshman Matthews has broken through in the first-team this campaign after joining Cardiff as an eight-year-old. Aged 16 he won the Football Association of Wales Trust player of the year and Adam collected his second notable gong on Sunday, when he scooped the Championship Apprentice of the Year for 2010. Arsenal have been scouting him all season.

The tenacious and strong right back currently has 27 appearances this term, scoring once. Matthews is also a current Wales Under 21 international and Manchester United have followed him for a number of months. A bid of around £4 million was mooted in January while some speculated that he has signed a pre-contract to join the Red Devils. This was swiftly denied by Risdale.

“We’ve had two or three enquiries and I know Manchester United and Arsenal are in for the lad.”

“But there is no agreement with any club, verbal or otherwise. We want Adam to stay with Cardiff and that’s what we are hoping will happen.”

Francis Coquelin is currently being tried out in the right back slot while Gavin Hoyte and Kerrea Gilbert are unlikely to still be with Arsenal in the summer. Coquelin has performance adequately so far, but whether Arsène Wenger decides on bringing in more back up for Bacary Sagna and Emmanuel Eboué, time will tell.

With Sagna and Eboue ahead of him in the pecking order, I think we could lose out to Utd on this lad. At Old Trafford, he’d only really be in direct competition with Rafael, so he’d have more chances of making the first team sooner, I reckon.

Your theory makes no sense. You think he would rather compete with one of the best young right backs in the world for the next 10 years or learn from an experienced right back and take over the starting job when he is 21.

Shane, I dont know what you see in Rafeal.

I have watched Manchester United many times this season and can see that he is a very average player.

He regularly gets beaten by players with more pace, such as Bellamy, and cant defend when he is being run at.

He is not a very good defender and is just average going forwards. If this guy is as good as Cardiff fans reckon he would be way better than Rafeal the crap brazilian. Recently Ferguson has left him out in the bigger games favouring both Neville and the last guy to play right back for England Wes Brown.

Hope we get him, as they took Smalling away from us.

      @ AM
      I disagree with you wholeheartedly
I think Rafael is the best young RB in the world right now
He Kept Ronaldinho in check in the Milan game which is probably the hardest thing to do for any RB and he looks so much better than Gary Neville who is not a bad right back by any means.

AM you have to be joking. The kid is 19. How much do you you expect from a 19 year old right back. Anyways to the other guy…”kept Ronaldinho in check”….what match were you watching? Anyways to say Fabio is no good yet at 19 he is already the first choice right back at Man utd, is just ignorant. Side note….Fabio his twin brother is actually the higher rated one but has Evra in front of him.

Clearly not the same match if you think Fabio was playing against Milan and If you think Rafael is supposed to play LB

At OT, he would be behind Rafael, Wes Brown and Neville. I’m not sure but i swear Eboue’s contract is up at the end of this season, and he’s yet to commit to a new one. Is that correct people?

I thought he’s a left-back which was for me strange that we’re looking after him having gibbs, clichy, traore, bothelo, cruise but if he’s right-back then of course it would be good signing while we dont have any coming through I think. Coquelin can and can’t be good as right back he was signed as defensive midfielder.
If he’s going to be better than what we actually have then we must sign him.

I want a right back like Maicon who in my opinion is the best right back.

He can defend like sagna and attack like robben. Hes the perfect full back plus hes 6ft 1/2 as well.

Adam Matthews looks a quality player from what i have seen having seen ramsey this kid could be a worth a punt

Who doesnt want a rightback like Maicon? There happens to only be one of him tho and he is very expensive. Also he is a right back not a left back.

Eboue is as close as you can get to Maicon? I like Eboue but that comment is crazy. Maicon is on a different planet as far as right backs go. Heck the guy has 7 assists from right back this year.

Eboue hasn’t done bad himself even he has scored goals and provided assists and I know Eboue is not as good as Maicon but Maicon and Eboue style of play is a lot similar

I don’t think Adam Matthews would come to Arsenal as we’ve already got Sagna and Eboue but I think it’ll be MUCH harder for him to find game time at United, what with O’ Shea, Brown, Rafael and Gary Neville (even if he is 36…) I think he might just stay to get regular football for a while unless Mr Wenger can guarantee him some match time.

That is a dumb comment. He is a right footed rightback who is used at leftback sometimes because there is a guy called MAICON at right back. Adam Mathews plays out of position at left back sometimes too, doesnt meen he is a leftback.

If wenger really want him good but maybe it s just a story to get the price up as usual with good young player, say Arsenal want him and you get the chav and manure following and the price go up as usual..He look like a good young player, but will only coming if the price is right and if he wish to come here.

I saw this a few months ago too. It could mean that something is picking up though, now that the rumour has re-surfaced. I thought Azpilicueta was a left back?? I’m confused. I guess i’ll just look it up. It’s too bad Eboue wasn’t this effective sooner. We’ve had him for 5 or 6 years now!!:S lol. Does anyone think that Coquelin might go back to midfield or is he gonna be a fullback for the future?? It sounds like he has been adaquate, but he hasn’t set the barn on fire. It seems like his stock has fallen drastically, but he’s still young enough to pull himself up and to a higher level. I know the Eastmond situation might explain why he has struggled a bit, but it shouldn’t be the sole reason why he has had some problems should it??

If Gallas doesn’t sign a new contract
how many people here think that Djourou will become our first choice CB alongside Vermaelen

Who knows how Djorou wil recover from his injury, It seems fairly obvious that Wenger will sign a new center back regardless seeing as he was in for Smalling.

Djourou injury wasn’t something that will make him slower or weaker. It was a knee injury that kept flaring up so he had to surgery for it.
It should make him more injury free and more stronger what I want to know is that do you guys think he’s capable to replace Gallas or WIll wenger sign an experienced CB in his position?
not talking about Stefan Savic who is also coming.

In my opinion Coquelin has been playing rb because his distribution is quite poor compared to eastmond. Eastmond stlye is in no way flashy but his passes find the person in the best position. Coquelin looks like top prospect but needs to develope his allround game before he can play for the first team as dm.
I for one rate Djourou and with sol around the verminator i reckon he will turn out to be a good defender. But he has missed the whole season and we dont know how he will turn out next season and im not sure if he has the potential to be our starting cb or a very good backup.
If we want matthews then i think we have a good chance to get him. Ramsey would put in a good word for us. The smalling deal fell through in my opinion because wenger didnt want to pay up what ManU offered.

Are there any austrians here that know much about david alaba from bayern munich. He is a die hard gunner and his biggest wish is to play for arsenal one day. He started at lb for bayern aggainst fiorentina and in the bundesliga at the weekend. He is left footed and plays cm/dm. He is only 17.

Check the stats…EBoue, whenever he has played in position , “his natural position”, Right Back, he has scored goals as well as provided assists. He has just not been allowed to play in his natural position as a RB. In 2006 during the run in to the lost CL final, he was awarded the best right back of the tournamnet award. He just has been playing out of position due to Wenger’s nuances that he can be used a as a wide out defensive winger. He is very natural and one of the best defenders going forward as well as defending which ought to be his primary duty. He should be given mor echances to prove his worth, but in the position which suits him the best, the position he was naturally bornt o fit into..RB.

I agree Eboue is one of the best, he’s always been one of the best
But Sagna is a better defender than Eboue and no one can really deny that but with sagna as a RB and Eboue as RM we make sure that our right midfield is strong going forward and even better defending.

You people make me laugh. Not to long ago, everyone was saying how bad eboue was. Anyways here is the descrition of the 2 and why Sagna is the regular rightback. Eboue is better in attack and can be a decent defensive player but at right back he gets caught out of position and also loses the ball poorly sometimes. With Sagna, you know exactly what you are going to get. He runs up and down the right side all day. He always keeps posession and is a good defender. The only weakness in his game is he is a poor crosser of the ball.

I saw the three he conceded the other day on the Football League Show in the game Brentford drew 3-3. First goal he conceded, he got slightly nudged in the back while dealing with a high ball into the box which some refs would have given as a free-kick. He conceded one penalty and the third goal was dodgy on his part, failing to deal with another high cross. I didn’t see any of the three goals he conceded last night however, although i hear one was another penalty.
