Derby County manager Nigel Clough has revealed his intent to keep loan Arsenal winger Gilles Sunu for a second spell at Pride Park. The Frenchman has only featured twice for the Rams, but Clough has been suitably impressed with the 18-year-old and a year-long-loan next term is already on the cards.

Sunu made his first Derby start on Saturday away to West Brom, where he tormented Albion’s former Porto full-back Marek Cech throughout the game. However, the rugged and powerful nature of life in the Championship took effect late on and a clearly exhausted Gilles left the field with 10 minutes left. Yet in the 80 minutes previous, Clough saw enough to realise his latest dip into the transfer market looks to be a firm success.

“I think you saw once we get the ball to his feet and he is running at the full-back, he looks very exciting indeed. He did that one or two times in the first half and a couple of times in the second half.”

“Sunu was that tired after the game he fell asleep on the coach coming back. It is a big, big step up for him at 18, coming from Arsenal Reserves, but we think he is going to improve. He is still learning about the Championship which is vastly different to playing for Arsenal Reserves. It is a great experience for him.”

Gilou flew out yesterday to be the French Under 19 squad along with Francis Coquelin. The pair are to set to play two games in three days against Ukraine before he returns ahead of Saturday’s Championship fixtures. His new manager is taking his analysis of the powerful prospect game by game, but the future looks bright and Clough is keen to cash in on Sunu’s talents for next season.

“We are looking at him for next season as well, may be on a longer term loan. To do that, we have to put him out there and see how he does. I thought he did OK, not bad at all.”

Young Guns will have coverage of all the exploits of our international youngsters during this forthcoming week.

    Great news
I think I sold Sunnu pretty short
If a manager says that about a player after just two games then he saw something in him that made him think that he’s certainly one for the future
If he improves at derby this season then I think a year long loan will not be bad idea and then if wenger thinks he’s ready he can introduce him into the first team.

This kid has got mad potential.

  3. comment by lordgunner

first Derby stay in the championship then comeback later if you can have him next year. But it s always good if a manager praise you only after 2 game me think

  4. comment by bole

He will play first team games next year like eastmond and merida

  5. comment by ds goon

j off topic but can you give me any information that you might have about merida’s injury? with the midfield depleted like it is now he might play a bigger role in the squad when fit.
    cheers mate.

  6. comment by Milo

Hey ds goon, it says on the Arsenal website that Merida will play for the Spanish under 21 squad on tuesday in a friendly, so he might not be injured anymore. Anyone else hear that “the Clock End is coming back to the Emirates as welll as the North Bank?? I might never be able to go to the Emirates in my life time, but that sounds awesome. Maybe, maybe someday we could at least re-name the stadium and create something better than ” The Emirates” I know this is way off topic lol.

    • comment by Sam

I think the name will change when this sponsorship runs out unless Emirates come up with a much better offer than we have now

  7. comment by ds goon

cheers milo just saw that myself right now. that’s at least some good news.
yeah heard about that too, nice to see proactive steps like this being taken to make the emirates feel more like our old home.
as for renaming the stadium hopefully it will happen but unfortunately i don’t believe it will happen for another 10 years or so mate as the 100mil deal with emirates was for 15 years.

  8. comment by Milo

Yeah I know it probably won’t happen for a while either. I just think Highbury was the most beautiful football stadium in the world. Really. From the outside, to the marble enterior, to the big clock. Yeah the pitch was small, but so what?? I know changing venues was the only way forward for the club, but so many smaller clubs have kept their old grounds. Oh well, the deed has been done, but I still remain heartbroken over it, and I haven’t ever stepped foot in England. I hope Merida plays well for Spain, and then gets some big chances with the first team!!

    • comment by Sam

I think Arsenal did a noble thing but not handing Highbury to a contractor.
They build the whole thing themselves and even today it still has the feel that we got when the stadium was still standing.

  9. comment by ds goon

absolutely agree about highbury. the class that stadium oozed was second to none and it was a heart breaking sight to see it demolished. but that is the way it had to be. i personally think the development (highbury square) was a top notch idea. best thing i think we would have done with the site in my opinion. can you imagine what it would be like to be one of the lucky gooners living there? i for one would kill to own an apartment there.
‘but so many smaller clubs have kept their old grounds’ Really? and done what with it excatly?
(unless you mean some other team plays there now)

you need to change your linking policy because you are stealing people’s work and not even linking to their site. you can’t just disect an article that someone whose lively hood depends on them getting paid for their work and not link back to the source. you never link. how hard is this?

I’m not stealing peoples work, you fool. I just used the quotes, like it is quite within my rights to do. The Daily Mail and such don’t link to me when they use my work, but you don’t leave comments for them do you? you silly boy.

    • comment by Simon

Yeah thats bullshit this site fucking rules! I think its important to recognize and appreciate the hard work J is putting down in this. Most people wouldnt no shit about the youthranks without this site. Show some love man.

Thank you very much mate, it’s a pleasure.

A whole year on loan might be a great idea, the same steps as Lansbury took. I like him a lot, his directness might offer us something different. But next season he will still be too far behind in the pecking order to any regular playing time. A whole year on loan, preferably in the EPL, might put him into contention to fight for a regular place.

    • comment by Sam

I think Lansbury will probably require something like a six months loan to an EPL side maybe someone like Bolton or WIgan who play good football and then he should be brought into the first team
Merida and Wilshere should go out on Loan at least for six months they need to gain more experience same for JET, Eastmond, Bartley and Coquelin
But someone who we don’t speak often enough in Bazarite I have always though he was a great talent but he still hasn’t gone out on loan even though he’s fully fit right now

  12. comment by miki

good for the kid! Derby is a good side with talented manager. He’s gonna gain some strength..

  13. comment by Sami

    @Simmo

Well its not like he just copy+pasted whatever was in that link did he ?

  14. comment by alex

Cruise and Watt started for U19s, Deacon came off the bench. And Merida created the 2nd goal for Spain U21s.

Looking forward to watching Wilshere and Lansbury for U21s tomorrow :) .

  15. comment by Milo

Haha ds goon I meant that they still play in their old grounds. Like Atletico, Man U, Barca, Milan, Inter etc. I know we are a BIT smaller than these clubs but I still don’t think it was absolutely necessary to move no matter what anyone says. (no offence haha) But yes we definately did the next best thing.

I keep seeing stuff linking Arsenal to this Christian Eriksen guy from Ajax :S It had stopped but now we are being linked again lol. Is he better than Merida?? I doubt it. I hope he tears it up on tuesday!!:D

    • comment by Simon

A think both Barcelona and Inter are about to move. But I totaly get your point.

    • comment by J.Sanderson

The Eriksen stuff is rubbish btw. He’s in talks over a new contract at Ajax, so I wouldn’t get too excited about it.

    • comment by Sam

I think they are both talented
Both have their strength and weaknesses but I wouldn’t swap Merida for Erkinsen
Erkiensen will have to adapt to english football while merida is already been at arsenal for 2-3 years.

  16. comment by Milo

Is Sunnu a striker or a winger or both?? everyone knows we could use a winger or 2!!:D Especially in the younger ranks like wilshere’s generation haha.

    • comment by Sam

his pace and dribbling ability makes him more of a winger and he can score goals so he fits in our 4-3-3 formation

  17. comment by Milo

    I meant Sunu :S

  18. comment by Milo

Hey Merida created Spain’s winning goal in their Under 21′s game!!:D Hopefully that will keep his confidence high!! It should. I know it’s only under 21 but he is only 20 haha.

  19. comment by ds goon

ah that’s what you meant. that’s a really tough one because while i loved highbury the other stadiums you mentioned (bar the calderon?) are bloody massive in terms of capacity! i truly believe that the new stadium will eventually ensure that we have a very strong financial position (it’s already started to) something highbury just couldn’t unfortunately. and hey i’ sure arsenal had a long hard think about moving and decided it was the only way forward and they would not make that decision lightly.
as for Sunu believe he was a striker when he signed for us but i think he can play anywhere along the front line but i expect him to be used mainly on the lw or rw for the foreseeable future.
that’s good to hear about merida, hopefully he can kick on now and do well for us.

    • comment by Sam

Merida needs to sign a new contract first before he can go out on loan and then really challenge for a first team place
speaking of first team place how many people are fighting for it right now
AM – Fabrgeas, Rosicky, Nasri, Ramsey (From Jan 011), Diaby, Wilshere, Merida, JET and finally Lansbury – That’s 8 players for 2 places
DM – Song, Denilson, Eastmond, Norvedit, Coquellin, Frimpong that’s 5 players for 1 place

so some people will be let go I just hope we keep Nari, Fab, Ramsey, WIlshere, Merida, JET and Lansbury
so I wont mind if Rosicky left but other than that I hope we keep everyone else

  20. comment by ds goon

you’re forgetting that rosicky, nasri wilshere, merida and even jet can all play as part of the front three (lw or rw and jet as the main striker as well) how often have you seen nasri and rosicky START from the cm position this season? i’m sure arsene knows what he’s planning to do with all of them. many i suspect will go out o loan again next season considering the truly crazy amount of people on loan this term itself (like 16 or something!!)
plus rosicky won’t leave, signed a new contract and everything.. at least i really hope he doesn’t leave. love the little mozart.

  21. comment by Tony

Rosicky won’t leave because he fits in on the right side of our front three. Wenger has said before that 4-3-3 isn’t going to be our formation forever anyway.

I think now is Merida’s time to shine because he should at least make the bench now that Diaby and Ramsey have been injured.

As for Sunu, let’s hope he does well this season first :P

    NICE GUY SHAWCROSS BEING NICE
Broke Jeffers leg (former Arsenal player, now that is a coincidence). Find no images of this.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1083214/Arsenal-striker-Adebayor-ruled-weeks-Stoke-clash.html – come on now, shawcross has injured 2 of our players. now i guess thats luck and a coincidence.

http://v4admin.sportnetwork.net/upload/626/EMP-7340127.jpg – giving us a penalty and tripping. NOT A BAD FOUL but at least he gave us a penalty…some consolation..but still :(

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1083029/Cowards-Angry-Wenger-accuses-hard-men-Stoke-setting-hurt-Arsenal-players.html – stoke injured 3 of our players in one match then broke a leg in the other. Bad luck and more coincidences for Arsenal.

VIDEOS – don’t worry they are not the Aaron Ramsey tackle and are not horrific at all.

Do something. This tactic of roughing up Arsenal is obviously very dangerous. Above are examples from just one team…Time to do something about this.

http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00637/stoke_8_-_Ryan_Shaw_637143a.jpg – even injuring his own players by poking them in the eye.

Another player injured by Stoke – http://www.onestokefan.co.uk/2009/12/06/arsenal-2-0-stoke-city-stoke-players-attempts-to-injure-arsenals-fail/

http://cdn.bleacherreport.com/images_root/galleries/182/182625/display_image_GYI0058556602.jpg – dont know what he did. i could look it up but ive been researchin this already too long and have other stuff to do lol. someone can look it up if they want, sure it would be interesting…
    p.p.s

    http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/09PC1Ox14kaRz/429x.jpg NICE ONE!

  23. comment by majid

if barazite went to derby on loan and came back t oarsenal better, sunu should do the same

  24. comment by Davi

It’s great that he has a manager who trusts his ability. So often these loans dont work out as expected because the managers end up not wanting to play our youngsters. This move should be great for him.
