Jack Wilshere Scouting Report – Chelsea V Bolton

The plaudits just keep on coming for Arsenal’s loan winger Jack Wilshere. Earlier this week his temporary manager, Owen Coyle, had told England coach Fabio Capello he should pick the prospect for the forthcoming World Cup after his fine performances for Bolton since January. His best game so far was at home to Manchester United, where his flair and style earned praise from all. The boy just relishes the big occasions.

Tonight was another. Coyle took his Bolton side to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in a key game. The hosts knew a win would send them four points clear of the chasing pack and all but give them a notable lead in the title race. Wilshere was out to try and influence in a new role, playing just off Kevin Davies as Coyle went for two banks of four and then some guile next to the physical Davies. If Jack could help take points from the Blues, it could be key for Arsenal in their hunt for silverware.

You can read a minute by minute report below:

14. Jack collects the ball just over the half way line. He steps over the ball twice, wrong-foots Didier Drogba who kicks him to the floor. Bolton free-kick.
25. Wilshere battling away with Kalou on a Chelsea corner. Taylor heads away.
32. Stays close to Mikel, tackles back and pokes the ball through to defender Cahill.
33. Jack plays a one-two with Davies who picks out Taylor in the box. He was unlucky to have been flagged offside.
45+2. Following the Chelsea goal, Jack comes forward but gives the ball straight away after slipping.

Half Time.

46. Wilshere’s first action of the second half. He combines with Davies for an attack and then wins a free-kick after Lampard fouls him.
54. Jack opens up space on the edge of the box, plays in Lee on the right who loses it. Chelsea break and almost score.
60. Wilshere starts another move, this time on the left, but again Lee loses possession.
62. He leads appeals for a penalty, running to the ref passionately protesting for his team.
68. Added to a small tally of fouls by clipping Paulo Ferreira and winning the ball. Harsh award of a free-kick.
73. Wilshere flicks the ball on for Muamba who strides forward and crashes over. Great awareness.
74. Breaks away from the midfield, appeared to be clipped by Lampard but nothing given. Gets up, chases and tries to win the ball back with a firm tackle.
81. A disappointed Jack trudges off as Coyle brings on two strikers to try and come back.

Overall.

Jack was noticeably one of the best players in the white shirt. He’s clever, intelligent and he tries to make things happen. Whenever he plays a delightful low ball, Bolton mix it up with a long and more direct pass. He buys them time to create space for a more direct ball, but you can’t help but feel the need to go longer almost drowns out the whole point of his silky style.

That said, Wilshere has no doubt adopted Bolton’s dogged, awkward and aggressive style. Since his youth days, the boy, who is towered over by just about everybody, has had a raw aggression. He chases, he hassles and his love for possession and to create things with the ball no doubt inspires his thirst to win the ball back after losing it.

Tonight was a trick night for Bolton, but with spirit, energy and style, he looks every bit the future Arsenal player.

I thought his first touches were out of this world and everytime he got the ball Chelsea had two players closing him down. I still think he needs to improve his work rate a bit but at arsenal he wont be chasing the ball from end to end so maybe a little bit better is all that’s needed.
Why isn’t he shooting from outside the box like he did sometime I haven’t seen him try it once?
The best part of his game that I enjoyed in the game was the way he bullied Terry and Alex. He’s half the size and still got the best of them in more than a few occasion.
I think this can be a very good part of his game. Made me think of Rooney when I saw that

Hahaha – no title for you then. I guess God is a Gooner only on weekends as you seem to have no luck (aka talent) on weekdays when the cup competitions take place. Stoke, Man City and Barca have disposed of you this year and you can add Chelsea in the league. I am leaving now as it smells to much like failure in here.

He did what he could and what he did do was good… But it’s really painful watching Bolton play. Their lack of quality with the ball is so frustrating…. Chelsea were not good tonight and all it really needed was for Bolton to have a bit more urgency and footballing nous for an upset to happen. Maybe i was hoping for too much.

I saw the match on my computer and I was impressed as well. I’ve seen a few of his matches now. There is one thing about him though that really upsets me. He is a dirty player. He is. I admire aggression and committment, but I get the impression that he is one of these guys who doesn’t stop shoving you, and doesn’t shut up. You know what I did with those types of players??? I punched them in the face. And he might find out that something like that could happen to him. He just looks annoying. I’m sorry but he really has to cut this out of his game. I know being physical is important, but he’s gotta keep his hands down. Every match of his that I watch, he is brilliant on the ball, but then he gives away waaaaay too many cheap fouls because he has his hands up. Being small is not an excuse either. It isn’t. He doesn’t need to do this type of thing. I don’t care what anybody else says, it’s totally unnecessary and unsporting to boot. Be a man, not a child. He has to cut down on his petulance. I’ve been meaning to say this for a while. I don’t mean to be so hard on him because god knows, he’s one of the only really talented players in the entire Bolton squad. I’m just upset that he has turned into one of those types of players who I despised the most. Those yap, yap, yappers and those hack, hack, hackers in defense.

sometimes you need to do that hind of things to win a game, especially when u face a stronger opponent. If we did it against Barca, we would at least concede less than 4 goals from a “tiny” skillful player. I mean, don’t be so naive, every other teams do it once in a while right? Even Barca did it too. Remember how puyol and their other defenders constantly kicked Henry & co. in that Champions League final game few years ago? So, let JW learn that side of the game.
      Cheers..

hahahaha thats what i find brilliant about him

did you watch the barca matches? they were dirty shits completely

busquets keita toure pedro..all of em fouled walcott and nasri anytime they were close to getting a run on goal..its an important part of the game and i think people in our team dont do it enough

i play centre mid and defensive mid myself..so i know the importance of these fouls..they put the other team off and works them up..making it easier for them to get frustrated and last out..which could get cards for them or give us the upper hand

so..i love the fact he’s dirty..as long as he doesnt do shit to his own teammates

Nagging and hacking at Chelsea? I would like all our players to do that. Why? Because sometimes you have to give the cunts some of their own medicine. Like somebody should punch you in the face for nagging about Wilshire and calling people twats…

    Good report.

I saw the game and was quite impressed by his talents even though the players around him just didn’t have the quality and hence his good work came undone quite often.

In the second minute of so he was under pressure from 4 Chelsea players when in possession. It was amazing to see his composure and the way he found a team mate without giving the ball away.

Soon after he had a tussle with Terry and a foul was given against Wilshere. The commentator said he was bullying JT! I couldn’t stop laughing for a few minutes.

Jack looks very good in the middle third and will only get better when his team mates are at a higher level. I still think he needs to work on his shooting and on the final ball. He has the speed, technique and body movement. If he can use that and make more of an impact in the final third, he’ll be right up there with the very best.

they have different styles, but there are some similarities between wilshere and messi.
both are tiny but strong. both are total naturals on the ball. both are comfortable playing against older, bigger, stronger guys. wilshere is ahead of his peers by a few years. messi was too at that age.

wilshere doesn’t have the pace or direct running gait that messi has, so in that regard he’ll never be like him.

you never know though. wilshere could be the prodigious talent pulling the strings of the arsenal attack over the next 5 years in the same way that messi is for barca now.

I think since Lansbury and JET signed a new long term contract this season means they will be in first team next seasoon although I hade no idea where JET will play. Lansbury will play alongside Fabregas in Diaby role. BUt maybe they both will go out on loan to a top championship or a low EPL side.

Hardavard Norvedit might become a first team player (50/50) but Bothelo is surely going to be released. Randall will probably be loaned again and then wenger will see if he wants to keep him or not. I think the club Randall went to was wrong.

Hoyte is surely not the RB we thought he will become and another loan for him will either prove if he has got it or not

YG why dont you do an article on how Arsenal youngster have done so far in their loan spell, you know who has looked good and who has looked okay or very very bad. It will be very helpfull. Also some stats will also work which shows how much games he has played for their respective vclub including the no. of assits and goals. Or quotes their managers have used to say about their performances.

Jack made one mistake in the whole game – a big one where he gave the ball away on the edge of his own box about 5 mins before he was replaced where Chelsea almost profited from with a second goal. Apart from that, he made us proud. Easily Bolton’s brightest player along with Lee, tired towards the end. He would have shone more playing behind a work-a-holic like Elmander who would have at least tried to run in behind the Chelsea defence, giving JW the option of playing him through, unlike the boring and ineffective Davies.

On another note, Lee Probert and chums should hang their heads in shame in failing to spot two very clear-cut hand balls from Drogba and Terry in their own box.

Jack has definitely improved at Bolton. He went as a player who lacked a bit of courage and he’s gained it now and he is more involved in games and has more presence. Now he is beginning to run at players more though he needs to do a better job of finishing his dribbles. I think he still lacks a bit of power but that will come. Overall the signs are good, and even though I was against the idea at first I want him to spend next season at Bolton. He needs to be the ‘man’ at Bolton and carry the attacking burden at their club. If he can score and assist there consistently then he can come back and be first choice RWF.

John, I thought I was the only person who thought that Jack should have gone to Wigan. I also thought of Westham but not because of their game but that some of Zola’s footballing talent – not coaching – would rub off him. But Bolton will toughen him up though. The boy will be a prodigy! Also agree with you on Lansbury. But reading his attitude he’d probably prefer a season’s loan at a smaller Premiership club. Maybe he could replace jack at Bolton next season?

I feel sorry for wigan they dominate games but dont put thier chances away and dont defend well but i could see wilshere really flourishing under martinez behind the likes of rodagella and having ppl like mccarthy, n zgobia around him.

Wilshere doesnt suit bolton its obvious but he will improve his tactical side his defensive side which can only do him good

What i like about lansbury is that he rejected premiership, la liga, championship offers to join scun thorpe in league 1 then went to the championship and now thinks hes ready for the prermirship. I like that attitude.

Plus hes a gooner hes from North london enfield and he one of these players like gerrard he can do something special with passion and commitment. Hes a very passionate player and work his socks off. Plus hes versatile can play in a number of positions he could be relaly good for arsenal

I can see what you’re saying Milo. I wouldn’t go as far as calling Wilshere ‘dirty’ but he is certainly petulant. When he’s frustrated he will shove, trip, and pull shirts. It’s not the worst trait in the world though, you can see he isn’t trying to hurt anybody (unlike some *cough* Shawcross *cough*) and I’m sure he will learn to control that as he matures.

How can he concentrate with the ball when you got kevin davies, mumaba, matt taylor.

When you watch bolton they hoof the ball up cause they lack the technical players.

Owen coyle u can see him making lots of changes especially with the full backs and central midfidielders and strikers.

with the exception of messi you could put any top class player in a poor squad and that squad’s fortune won’t improve that much. If you look at watford, they have both lansbury and cleverly who are good players and they are now near the relegation.

I am not worried about Jack fouling other players. He has to get his timing right but he isn’t breaking any legs. Arsenal actually could do with more players ready to get stuck in. One of the reasons why our early ’00 teams did well was because they had an edge. Many midfielders felt the business end of Bergkamp’s elbows.

I don’t like the talking, though. It is unnecessary and it does make the players who do it look petulant. Given the dialogue in the papers about Shawcross et al. I would suggest that our players should try biting their tongues and tackle more.

IMO, JW is more similiar with Iniesta rather than Messi. Unlike Messi, JW is a central player just like Iniesta. In a 4-3-3 formation, I can see JW playing in the same role as Iniesta does for Barca. Moreover, I think Ramsey and Song can play just as good as Xavi and Toure does in the other 2 midfield position. Yeah I know, I know.. FM stuff right?! I just wish we can have a squad that can play briliant football week in week out just like Barca. The last time we have a squad like that was 6 years ago when we won the league unbeaten.. Those days are truly the proudest days I have ever had as an Arsenal fan. Watching Bergkamp, Henry, Pires, Ljungberg, Kanu, Viera, Gilberto, Edu, Cole, Campbell, Toure are just breathtaking!! Not to mention the likes of Wiltord, Reyes (in his early days, he is an amazing talent), Parlour & Lehman (He made some blunders, but he is still far more better than Almunia). I really miss the joy of watching them playing football as if they were playing futsal..

Guys Denilson isn’t the greatest, we know. He shouldn’t be starting either. But he should be part of the SQUAD right?? We’ll see how he does next year!! He’s only 22 and he’ll improve even more than he has this past year. Enough of the slamning. I can’t believe I’m saying that, me of all people. The biggest problem we had today was that we walked through 80 minutes of a 90 minute football match. We just didn’t look like we wanted it enough. This is a worrying trend for me. i know a lot of our first team were injured, but the second team isn’t that much worse. This attitude seams to permeate the entire team. This is why I am looking forward to the youth team products coming through the ranks. If we can win something at their level, it may help them build a winning mentality and a drive to win and play well every game no matter what has happened before the match. It seems like we were worried or upset about past events and they never could focus themselves on the matter at hand. Maybe they were tired, I don’t know. It still isn’t a great excuse! the youths can hopefully inject a new attitude into the first team when they arrive. I think this will help immeasurably.

the start of the second half was just so slack and thats why we lost the goal. We gave them to much space when they attacked and we deffinately need more centre backs as silvestre is not up to it. WHy not play a youngster instead of him.

I think wenger wil need to add a good goalie, chamakh, cover for Song, nd 1 maybe 2 centre halves. Silvestre, Fabianski, Rosicky(he aint the player he was), and maybe Eduardo hav to be shown the door. I think Wenger should give a run out to Vela Merida Eastmond Barazite for wigan game. I’m telling you, it’s all in the head boys. If you don’t want to win, or work extremely hard to win, then gues what???? YOU DON’T WIN. I saw this in the second game against United and in one of the Chelsea matches, as well as this one. Injuries are no excuse. Time for one or two youngsters to come up and make an impact. If we really want to win any trophy next year, we obviously need to strengthen our squad coz the current squad is just not good enough. If AW don’t make any significant changes in the summer, then we are surely going to have another trophyless season next year.

I think every arsenal player should be proud of the way they have fought for this season.
I know we havent won anything but people were ruling us out of top four before the start of the season so the fact that we were in the title race for this long is commendable in itself.
A lot of our players have grown up and hopefully with some additions particularly in defense to the squad we should be competing for the championship again next year.
I hope now we will get to see more youngsters in the mix since I doubt we can come back for a third time. Still it makes you think what might have happened if RVP was available for the entire season oh well.
This season we can hold our heads high and say that we really went for it and the better team won and to be fair CHelsea is better than us right now

The biggest thing for us next season will be to make sure we keep our important players at arsenal – Eboue, Vermaelen, Clichy, Song, Fabrgeas, Diaby, Arshavin, RVP, Walcott, Nasri, Bendtner
I dont want us to sell even one of them and then say we are rebuilding again.

except from when he had a few shots with the outside of his boot, i thought rosicky had a decent game and now he has kept fit for a we while i do believe he is only going to get better.

Now that Vermaelen is out for almost a month, almost the rest of the season, does anyone think we should recall Philippe Senderos from Everton? It would give him a chance to regain his place and finally kick out Silvestre. I’d also call back Kyle Bartley as well for the bench.

Henri is a young French/senegalese striker who plays for Bordeaux. Huge things were expected of him when he was sixteen but hes not realy featured for Bordeaux yet. I think he is about 18 now and he wouldnt cost too much but i dont know why Wenger would sign with silva coming and sunu improving.

I think if Hazard is signed then arshavin will be sold I can bet you on that
second chamak was always going to be signed
henri saivet will definitely not be signed
thirdly most of the money should be spend on defensive player I think we have a great offenisve line I just hope Walcott comes into his own next season and I still think we need someone like Melo to make our midfield very very solid.

He’s is not a lazy russuian he saved us last year remember that

I get so pi$$ed at these arsenal forums sometimes (not this one)
they love wenger when we win and then they curse him when we lose
I know we havent won anything for 6 long long years but I can see the future of this team I can see what this team can become with just a few tweaks and additions why can’t they see it as well

      Additions
Gk – Almunia I agree is a good player for an average EPL team but not us
Fabianski needs a good run in to prove what he’s capable of
CB – Gallas, Silvestre and Sol all in their 30’s and with the exception of Gallas all of them are not worth the keep. Atleast two players are needed in this area
DM/CM – Someone like melo who is a good defender and attackers is definitely needed but that’s it

      Our starting lineup next season

      ————- Almunia (Frey ?/ Fabianski)
      Sagna/Eboue ——- ? ——- Vermaelen —— Clichy
      —————- Song ————— Melo
      ————————- Fabregas
      Nasri/Chamak ———— RVP—————- Arshavin

just a reminder how young our players are

      Attacking Lineup

      Robin Van Persie – 26
      Eduardo – 28
      Arshavin – 28
      Rosicky – 29
      Vela – 21
      Walcott – 21
      Bedtner – 22
      Nasri – 22

      Our Midfield

      Song – 22
      Fabregas – 22
      Diaby – 23
      Denilson – 21
      Ramsey – 19
      Wilshere – 18
      Merida – 19

      Our defense

      Sagna – 27
      Eboue – 26
      Clichy – 24
      Gibbs – 20
      Traore – 19
      Vermaelen – 24
      Djourou – 23
      Sol – 35
      Gallas – 32
      Silvestre – 33

      Our Goalkeepers

      Almunia – 32
      Fabianski -24
      Mannone – 22
      Szczęsny – 19

All we now have to do is work on our defense other than that we have a group of players from our attack to defense who are just going to get into their prime and are surely the future greats but investment is needed

Arsharvin may not be a lazy russian, but his impact is nowhere nead cesc or RVPS. He is not up there among the biggest stars of Arsenal. All the matches i have seen with him in, well we may aswell use Nasri. Arsharvin was suppose to lead us towards a trophy, and his experience and his skills just has not lived up to the expectations. As i stated before he is lightyears behind arsenals best players RVP and Cesc.

Arshavin is just out of form, albeit it seems for an entire season. Nevertheless he had good games against Liverpool, Celtic, Stoke, etc and I think the main reason why he hasn’t been performing is that he was used as our striker for a few months and therefore he didn’t have a decent run on the wing. The good thing about Arshavin is he comes up with magic at random times – remember than screamer vs Man United? Or those spectacular finishes vs Olympiakos and Liverpool? He hasn’t been our best player this season, but that takes nothing away from his ability.

i still think melo could be a good shot actually.. he has a bad season (the whole juve squad has by juve standard) but his game is perfect for the premiership (fast and aggressive )and denison would be perfect for Italian style of play (slower and more control.)..exchange both of them ,and both team would get a perfect deal…I rate denilson but the English league is way to fast for him.
