Arsenal 5-3 Nottingham Forest – U18 Final – Report

Arsenal’s Under 18’s have retained the Premier Academy League Trophy after beating Nottingham Forest 5-3 in a thrilling final at Emirates Stadium. Steve Bould’s boys had to do it the hard way, coming from behind before eventually shaking off Forest. Benik Afobe bagged a hat-trick, including one from the spot while he made two goals for Luke Freeman, one of which was a penalty kick.

Bould made one change to his side which edged Manchester United in the semi-finals, bringing in goalscorer Oğuzhan Özyakup for Roarie Deacon on the wing. On the bench, out went Martin Angha and Jamie Edge in favour of an ‘insurance policy’ in Championship loanees Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Kyle Bartley.

Shea
Yennaris – Boateng – Miquel – Evina
Özyakup – Frimpong – Henderson
Aneke – Afobe – Freeman

Subs: McDermott, Bartley, Meade, Emmanuel-Thomas, Deacon.

Nottingham Forest kicked the 2010 Premier Academy League Final off, and it was they who settled to the task quicker. After both sides exchanged passes, top scorer Tom Mullen burst inside Daniel Boateng from the left and smashed the ball off the inside of the post. It was a real warning of their intent.

Arsenal hit back when Oğuzhan Özyakup’s direct, long diagonal picked out the rampaging Benik Afobe through the middle. He managed to hold off Kieron Freeman but after losing his footing, Forest were able to clear. They immediately exploded up the field with the tricky Matt Sykes. The dangerous wasn’t read and his excellent cross was steered into the net by Danny Elliot from close range. Forest 1-0.

Steve Bould reacted to the goal by barking orders from the touchline to the Gunners’ twitchy defence. Henderson and Afobe both had shots blocked in some fluid forward play, yet the visitors with Mullen were dangerous on the break.

The Gunners grew in confidence and began to dictate at the half way point of the first period. Superb 10-15 pass combinations were slick and included Miquel and Boateng from the back, but the lack of penetration was frustrating. Frimpong and Henderson were guilty of wasting good free-kick opportunities before the latter finally found the combination to unlock Nottingham.

Henderson’s ball over the top found Afobe, he bulldozed his way into the box yet Mytides denied him with a reflex save. The arriving Freeman stumbled but clipped the re-bound back to Benik who slammed Arsenal level. 1-1.

With the half time whistle approaching, Arsenal stepped it up and made sure they would go into the break ahead. Özyakup thought he would be the hero yet Mytides saved again, but Afobe would spare his blushes. Aneke’s slid pass was collected and then dispatched into the Forest goal with style by Benik, his 20th of a break through season. 2-1.

Half Time – Arsenal 2-1 Nottingham Forest

Steve Gatting handed out chewing gum to the coaching staff as the second half kicked off, a sign of how relaxed they were after a dominant finish to the first period. More of the same guaranteed the retention of the trophy.

Bould’s boys mirrored their earlier performance. The total domination of possession and the play continued although chances were few and far between. Despite a one goal difference, Miquel was far too casual when caught up field and after losing the ball to Tom Mullen, it was all hands on deck to stop the attack. Frimpong tried to force the forward wide but he skipped beyond the Ghanaian and crossed for George Thomson to level from close range. 2-2.

Far from being ‘shell-shocked’, Arsenal immediately began work on getting their lead back. Özyakup twisted and turned in the area on a rare foray into the box, he rolled in Afobe who was clipped down for a penalty. Benik gathered his composure and sent Mytides the wrong way to complete his hat-trick. 3-2.

Within minutes of re-gaining the lead, it was extended in similar circumstances. Afobe powered down the left and was hacked down for a second spot kick. A very easy decision in the end. Benik stepped aside and allowed Luke Freeman to convert. He did, slamming home inside the post. 4-2.

Nottingham Forest then pulled one back, 90 seconds later. The terrific Mullen taking Bamford’s pass and finishing. An exciting finish to the game was a certainty. 4-3. The visitors were buoyant but the scoreline was not an accurate reflection. Miquel should have put it beyond doubt when he had an effort cleared off the line but eventually, Afobe rolled in Freeman who side-footed his second and Arsenal’s 5th. 5-3.

The final minutes were rather quiet in relation to the previous 23 minutes, which brought five goals. The four minutes of injury time were coasted through by the Gunners, making sure they claimed their deserved prize. The full time whistle ended the contest and the celebrations began. Arsenal are the Premier Academy League Champions for the second year in a row.

You know the good thing about the young people winning these kinds of cup are that they have won something with Arsenal. Whoever makes it can say he has already won something with Arsenal. These and Last years Arsenal players are winner and we have missed players like these in Arsenal team.
Hope to see most of them becoming Arsenal players in the future.

About the Game I thought we played a very very open game and gave up to many goals but a fantastic game to watch. WE have some serious talent in Aneke, Freeman, Afobe, Henderson, Ozzy, Miquel and Shea

An important point: The second year running with nearly a completely different team, I believe.

Second point: The youngsters are learning that consistency and application get league trophies, while cup runs are a different kettle of fish.

The problem is that these Videos are above 10 mins and youtube only allows you to post videos under 10 mins so do you want me to upload it on a file sharing site like Rapidshare and post it here.
United games is in two part both 50 mbs and 12 mins each
Forest game is 55 mins each and 250 mb in 2 parts also

I think he’s great, but I really feel for Shea. I look at him and think he’ll just get battered in the premier league by forwards who outweigh him by 30-40 pounds, and possibly jump higher than he can even get his mitts to punch, and the referees won’t give him enough protection. The youth teams’ coaches and players are too respectful and fair-minded to play like Pulis/Allardyce/Brown et al. But I could be wrong about his prospects.

However, as Andrew puts it, it’s great that Shea will at least be able to look back on this and feel that he was one of the best youth goalkeepers in Britain for two years. Wherever he winds up the club will be really luck to have him.

Chuks Aneke that guy has sublime skills. Whos more skillful jay thomas or chuks aneke?

Chuks Aneke this season has really improved his work rate and his work off the ball hes a really inteligent player as well.

He does remind me of riquelme when he was at Villareal they way he controls the ball, manipulates, shields it from players.

hi guys, its nice and enjoyable to discuss about arsenal with you all.here’s my opinion

GK-hart(he is the only gk with good quality but not in big club, and he had proven himself in epl compare to those other rumours that link gk with arsenal),almunia(second choice will suit him and relieve his pressure to gain backthe form he used to be,an okay substitute keeper.haha),mannone(wenger should loan him out to primier league team with call back option or until january in case of injury crisis and gain some experience with playing time off the club)

CB-vermaelen,campbell,djourou,nordveit(same with mannone),a new starting cb who wenger thinks that will suit arsenal

RB-eboue,gilbert/hoyte(i din see them play a lot,but i would prefer gilbert and do the same thing like mannone),a new starting rb(as i prefer eboue to be included in the subs and sagna did well but not enough for a team that challenge title with such awful crosses.maicon will be great.haha.damn.it will be like having dinner with cheryl cole if maicon join arsenal.)

    LB-clichy,gibbs,traore(same as mannone)

DM-song,eastmond and coquelin(both of them will improve alot as the competition for backup role)

CM-fabregas,diaby,denilson(plz dont include him in dm coz he cant afford to play such an important role),ramsey, lansbury and emmanuel-thomas(wenger can choose one to be loan out like mannone),merida(if he still want to play for arsenal,if he choose to stay,he will be a great cover for ramsey before he come back)

wingers-walcott,wilshere and vela(loan out for half season for final title challenge sprint),nasri(i would prefer him in the cm role but wenger is looking forward him to be the second pires),rosicky(included in the sub role),hazard/zarate/suarez(i would prefer a new world class starting player but i dunno whether hazard suits)

CF-rvp,chamakh,bendtner,eduardo(loan him out to let him gain the confidence back and come back for title challenge)

players out-fabianski(this guy got no hope, haha),gallas and silvestre(out of contract),sagna, arshavin(i love this guy,but he keep talking he will join barcelona, juz sell this guy that would affect the team chemistry when he still have the market price.haha)

beside these player, arsenal will have a bunch of players that can step up such as szczesny, miquel, angha, ozyakup, galindo, frimpong, wellington silva, freeman, afobe…ah man, future looks great for arsenal.haha

Traore looks like he’s leaving – to PSG? – and anyway I’m not convinced he’s good enough for us. Wenger seems to like Cruise, who even got a chance in the Champions League – perhaps being English gives him an advantage? But what do I know? The young players I most like are Coquelin and Barazite. Coquelin may come through if he can adapt to being a right back, but Barazite I’m beginning to think won’t make it with us.

Traore has all the skiils to be a very good leftback. Pace, power, and has skills on the ball. He is just horrible at descision making and positioning. But his attributes are a reason to keep him around.

    • May 11, 2010 at 6:17 pm
      Permalink

Yeah Traore will probably leave, but if he can’t break in, what chance has Evina? Like most Traore, he has a pretty poor positional sense – his pace just bails him out of trouble, but he doesn’t have as much pace as Traore, isn’t as physically imposing and his crossing ability is weaker, too. I too like Coquelin and Barazite. I hope Nacer gets just a couple of chances early on next season. If he doesn’t impress, then fine, loan him in January and sell him in the summer and he’ll do well somewhere else. Coquelin won’t stay at RB for long I don’t think. I think Arsene just wants him to learn how to protect the full-backs. He’s doesn’t look natural out wide, but I think the experience will make him stronger at DM and I expect him to be challenging Song, who will be very tough to knock out of the side, the season after next.

I think Traore will do better in the LM or in the wings he loves going forward and a lot of times stay forward and leaves spaces for team to exploit. I think Wenger should move him into the midfield rather than keep him as a LB

    • May 11, 2010 at 7:23 pm
      Permalink

Andrew- Troare is not a 4-3-3 left winger. In a 4-4-2, yes because he has pace to get down the wing and put crosses in but in a 4-3-3 you need wingers that take on players, score goals and link up. Much more responsibility on wingers for goals in the 4-3-3.

Freeman reminds me of Ronney. A player who keeps working for his team till the very end and not a bad finisher either hopefully he turns out to be of the same class.

I was just think about his main qualities, Andrew. I’m think they’re tenacity, team ethic, turn of pace and ability to shield the ball.

Let’s just say he makes it into the first team – I reckon those attributes would be perfectly suited to left back. I don’t know – I’m just speculating – but I just wonder if he’d be more effective at top flight football from that position.

you have just described Rooney to me
tenacity, team ethic and turn of pace
and when we have players like Gibbs and Cruise waiting for their chance then then no need to put him on the LB. LW yes but I dont think putting him on the LB will work.
I think Freeman if he is going to be success at arsenal will have to be as ST or a temporary LW.

    • May 11, 2010 at 7:06 pm
      Permalink

Well that’s the difference; I feel Freeman has those qualities in abundance…but he doesn’t have Rooney’s skill. I hate to say it as an Arsenal fan, but it’s no shame not to be up to Rooney’s level.

Like I say it’s just blind speculation, but there’s a bit of precedence with AW moving attacking wide players back to full-back position. Freeman just seems like a candidate to me.

Miguel was at fault, I think when, when he rushed forward and lost the ball. I think that was their 2nd goal. Besides that he played really good. And yes when you concede 3 goals it doesn’t necessarily mean that all your defenders played bad.

Below the age of 16 I am sure there are a few players who are good
Above the age of 16 we have Angha, Harjovic, Bartley, Ayling Norvedit, Djourou and Vermaelen in the CB role and my favourite CB IGNASI MIQUEL
LB we have Clichy, Gibbs, Traore and Cruise
RB we have Sagna and Eboue – this is where we need to strengthen we have either used DM players or CB in this role. I hope Liam Brady can find some good young RBs. Coquelin might be the answer or we might go out and buy someone young like Van Der Wiel.
Goalkeeper just need one Szschesny I dont care whos backup as long as he’s our NO.1 for the next 10-15 years

I think Luke freeman could break into the first team. I have seen him all season watch the highlights on arsenal tv ppl. You can quite clearly see Freeman has been our best player hes involved in nearly every goal we score and his work rate is unbelievable.

Freeman got the short passing game, hes an inteligent player like chuks aneke and conor henderson. You can see these players have something.

Afobe is a goal scorer but can he fit into arsenal system

John – I know you are a big Conor Henderson fan but he was nowhere near one of our better players today. Wasted possession too many times. The following lads had good games:

    Shea – Assured
Yennaris – Good concentration, neat in possession.
Miquel – Good concentration. Clever player. One mistake in the whole game that led to goal.
Evina – Got forward well. Very poor positionally, wasted possession too cheaply as usual.
    Aneke – Oozes class.
Ozzy – Neat and tidy. Good vision and passing ability, links the play well.
Freeman – Never stops moving. Hassles, harries, links play.
Afobe – Man of the match. You don’t score three and make the other two and not win that award. That’s unheard of.

Boateng has poor concentration and positional sense.
Henderson has the sweetest left foot and good passing ability but today he had a poor game.
Frimpong is so wasteful in possession. Didn’t protect his defence like he should have today.

what I think all of our are forgetting is that the size of the pitch these players play on small pitches but arsenal have a huge pitch and a lot of player from both teams were having problem because of it.
This may not be the case but it think this was one of the reason there were so many gaps for both teams to exploit.

Is aneke a wide midfield player now?? I thought he was a central midfielder. Who is better, Ozyakup or Henderson?? Or are both of them good enough to amke it at Arsenal?? After how long it took to find and sign Oguzan, I would hope he amkes it. I guess I’m a fan of his hahaha. I’ve really liked what I have seen of him this year!! I like Hender son too though! Ramsey, Lansbury, Cesc, Ozyakup, Henderson, Wilshere, Nasri, rosicky, Arshavin, Diaby, Denilson, Aneke, JET…that’s a lot of midfielders. I know one or two may leave, and some of them can play on the wings, but wow…that’s a tonne!! I think a lot of fans worry that we might make a mistake and release one or two players we shouldn’t. “We” being Arsene, his staff, and the youth team staff. I know this sort of thing has already been posted, but i can’t help thinking about it as more and more midfielders emerge within the club. Or after a youth team match. You can’t help but question the future of some of the better players in the more congested areas of the club.

Our midfield is filled with great players and that means we wont have to invest in for the next 7-8 years

DM – Song, Eastmond [ Frimpong and Denilson gone] Yennaris maybe
CM – Wilshere, Diaby, Lansbury [Aneke in the future but he’s 17 right now so about 4 years and Diaby will be gone by then} Henderson maybe
      AM – Fabregas, Ramsey, Ozyakup [By the time Ozyakup is ready Fabregas might have been sold to Barca}
Arshain is a winger and Nasri too
Rosicky is 30 and wont be here for long

Andrew’s comment is somewhat rediculous because it excludes JET. JET on the stregth his play in the last 18 months is a much better prospect at Central and/or Attacking midfield than Lansbury, Henderson, and Ozyakup…all of whom he lists as Arsenal’s future.

This kind of absurd misjudgement of this gifted player is a complete mystery to me. To pick out a Lansbury or Henderson and not even mention JET in Arsenal’s midfield future is beyond oversight…!

    • May 12, 2010 at 6:10 am

From what I have been told JET now plays an attacking role as either a striker or a winger so why would I put him in the midfield. I am not doubting his quality but before you make those comments you should atleast know what position JET has been playing in his loan spell

It is ridiculous to even speculate that Freeman can become as good as Rooney. Yes he may have burst onto the scene for Gillingham as a 15 year old but Rooney made a REAL impact as a 16 year old. To suggest that upwards of 5 players per year in the youths may make it is living in a dreamworld.
Well done to the lads today, they deserve the plaudits and hopefully they can all carve out careers in a high level of the game but if even 2 of todays XI become week in week out regulars I’ll be surprised.

Watch what you say. And as for those players partying with the Chelsea boyz, yes I would throw them off the team. What kind of message does it send to the fans?? All those players are replaceable. You don’t go cohorting with the enemy. You don’t. I’m so competetive that if I were a manager, i would make sure my players didn’t have any contact with any other players from any other team. I don’t care if they are former teammates. Adebayor is a sad little fuck. And so is JT. The players would have to have approval from me first if they were asked to go out by someone from a different club. If it were Scott Parker for example, fine. But not adebayor and not anyone from Chelsea. That’s just crazy. This is only my opinion, and it will never happen but that is what I would do and how I would expect my players to behave if i were a manager.

Sorry J, but it couldn’t have been Afobe unless Arsene was smoking something on the day. He certainly isn’t “technically perfect”, he’s very talented sure, but out of that starting XI I’d say he’s one of our weakest technically. Freeman, Ozzy, Henderson, Yennaris, Miquel all have better technique.
Aneke definitely has to be one of them though. Amazing technique. He’ll be such a brilliant player in the future. With that perfect technique and huge physique you can’t not be. Not too mention his vision and the shot he has on him.

Yennaris was a he a captain for the under 16s? Wasnt he a playmaker or has he always been a defensive midfielder.

BTW JS Do you think Lansbury will stay with arsenal next year or go on loan.

Instead of promoting our youngs players to develop,”those” claiming to love the club spit venon in the youngs trying to kill their confidence! Unfortunately blogs are allowing people staying in anonymous identities like JHON,like ANDREW insulting and always writing bad stuff on some players without facts and veracity. Please JHON show some compasion. Your comments specially on BENIK OFOBE are sickening and ridiculous. My guess is that you must be related to a player in competition with this talented Ofobe. You wrote broadly the same things last season and the season before trying to destroy his confidence . Your brainless comments goes beyond football and my heart goes out to his school friends who have to read yours horseshit comments. ANDREW;please give this blog a break! Are you a jobless person or what? no one care if you dismisses OFOBE talents because you are not WENGER and you dont write for the Arsenal.com. If you dont appreciate the boy who single handedly score 3 goals and provide 2 to “your” Freeman you must hate the boy who has been called “THE HAT TRICK HERO” by the ARSENAL.COM and at the end of the day Wenger was there to appreciate. Just to remind you no one in the u18 has scored more goals than OFOBE this season IN ALL ENGLAND. Checks and learn.

Well said NIKITA MELANICH. Your comment made a lot of sense, despite minor spelling errors. The hostile posts made by John and Andrew, I agree are becoming absolutely pathetic. I too have noticed the constant attack on young and extremely talented player Afobe in particular which is utterly obsurd considering the fact that without his presence on Tuesday the final show wouldn’t have been as exciting as it was. The boy made a terrific performance along with Freeman and Aneke.
Afobe remained in the correct positions and took on every goal opportunity to drive his team to the trophy. Scoreing goals is his job. He can’t take it from one end of the pitch to the other all by himelf!
Also might I add that whilst time is wasted in criticising Arsenal youth, this very negativity can cause rivaly between team members and fans within the same club.
Comments have not been constructive ie. “He should shoot more” or “He should pass more”. Shame on you gunners. We should be encouraging the boys not knocking them down.

As for shane… Have you spoken to Benik yourself to know that he is over confident or that he doesn’t read blogs?

Nikita is right, no one is Wenger, we are all just passionate commentators in our own rights but we should watch what we say, I think. If the boss likes what he sees in Afobe and Aneke then who are John and Andrew to persistently downtred on their abilities?

This site should censor any further rubbish written about the boys. They are the future.

Long time reader (enjoying the design change)…took the afternoon off work yesterday to watch the game, and was generally impressed with the standard, if not the intensity. Thought Forest’s front two, and Mullen (sp?) particularly, looked direct, intelligent and had a good understanding. They lacked quality in midfield which is where the game was really won, as we dominated the ball. A bit tippy, tappy going forward, but had so much of the play….only our lack of coheseive defense kept it interesting.

Shea didn’t have a lot to do, and wasn’t at fault for the goals.
Yennaris: Tidy and energetic, but absolutely tiny! Hope he has a late growth spurt like me.
Evina: Hasn’t developed over the last two years…pretty good going forward, fairly clueless defensively. always out of position
Miquel: dominant in the air, good technique, good passing. slightly lacking in pace on the turn, and was out of position a few times
Boateng: poor both technically and positionally and needs to make big leaps forward.
Ozyakup: Tidy, good technique, not particularly developed physically. Had 2 decent shots blocked and had an air shot…Still a couple of years away from CCup for me.
Frimpong: Tenacious tackler, decent engine, mediocre passing, naive positionally. FOr me hasn’t really kicked on in the last year, but could yet become a flamini type.
Henderson: Reminds me of a more mobile Randall…decent size and technique, but flattered to deceive a bit and didn’t contribute a great deal. Took up decent positions, and seemed to have some intelligence in his play.
Aneke: Was described by some oaf behind me as a ‘big lummox’…at times clumsy, ponderous and looked a bit lost, at others looked brilliant. Some good passing and wayward passing and twice seemed to slow down time to beat 2 or 3 men and shoot narrowly wide from the edge of the box. A really, really big lad!
Freeman: tiny, nippy, clever, direct. Bit like a 16 year old 1 footed arshavin but with a greater work rate. one of the best off the ball on the pitch. A lot depends on his physical development, but definitely has something about him
Afobe: well taken hat-trick, won 2 penalties and basically caused panic all around him. Decent strength, good pace, direct and has good movement off the ball. 1st touch sometimes like thierry enry, sometimes like perry groves, but at one point killed a 40 yard ball perfectly into his path with his wrong foot. Missed 2 good chances as well, and passing really needs work. As a striker, too good for this level…..
