Loanees Analysis – Jack Wilshere

Welcome to ‘Loanees Analysis’ – the new summer section on Young Guns where we review the trials and tribulations of Arsenal’s loan stars during the previous campaign. The series kicks off with Arsenal’s only Premier League starlet this year, Jack Wilshere.

Jack Wilshere is one of Arsenal’s brightest and most exciting prospects. Yet after just seven appearances this season, three from the bench, Arsène Wenger decided to shift the youngsters development into the next gear. Negotiations with Celtic, FC Twente and Burnley all took place, but eventually it was Bolton Wanderers who won the race to sign one of the most coveted English prospects.

He missed out an immediate debut against Liverpool but was eventually given a chance to shine during a surprise start against Manchester City. He impressed with some silky touches and skills, adding a technical and exciting option to Bolton attack. It was the first game of many as he secured a regular starting spot.

Within a matter of weeks he had doubled his career Arsenal appearances and completed the season with 13. Although he claimed a selection of assists, goals were hard to come by. He did get one, though. A superb volley against West Ham which proved to be the start of a great run for Owen Coyle’s improving outfit.

Coyle then tried Jack out in a central birth, playing him behind two strikers and even as a “number 10” against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Another classy performance endeared him to the Lancashire faithful. What impressed them most, is at just 5’7 and coming from a team not noted for their ‘rough stuff’, the 18-year-old was prepared to tackle back, fight and scrap for every ball.

He completed the season with another solid performance against Birmingham and as a measure of how well he had done, Coyle pulled him off in stoppage time to reap the rewards of his work from the crowd. The only blot on the copy book was some silly yellow cards picked up for overzealous tackles and kicking the ball away.

Loanee Rating: 8/10. After a slow start, Jack nailed down a regular spot in the Bolton side and impressed manager, coaching staff and fans alike. The experience will no doubt be key in the future and the fact a scramble is on for a second loan spell shows just what an impact the youngster can have.

I hope he has a good pre-season, and fights for a starting position this coming season. With the possible departure of Cesc, I would like to see Jack given the chance to prove himself in the hole left by Cesc.
we wouldn’t necessarily need to buy a like-for-like midfielder to replace Cesc. We have the options of Nasri, Rosicky and maybe Jack (has a good pre-season).

I been very impressed of what I seen of Wilshere at Bolton and he learning the physical side of football as well there. He took his goal against West Ham well I thought. Jack Wilshere is still young only 18 years old. Next season if he has a good pre-season with Arsenal he might work his way in to the starting line up. Which I think it will be hard to. Loan him out for the first half of the season with Bolton and then from January onwards with Arsenal. I heard Newcastle want him on loan next season which I hope he does not go there.

people really make me laugh as good as jack might be he isnt ready for regular 1st team at arsenal. send him out to bolton again 4 another year and see what happens cant believe people are saying we dont need to replace cesc do u want arsenal to finish 3rd or fourth again i dont, Arsene go out and spend the Cesc money go and get Gourcoff from bordeaux a CB and a goalie then and only then will we challenge for the title an out and out winger would be nice but not essential other wise we will continue to loose players to the likes of Barca no point in giving youngsters ago then as they become top players seeing them go. Arsene we need to win something to keep our best players or we will continue to suffer. If we can hold onto cesc for one more year then maybe and a big maybe rambo might be ready to fill in if not we must buy no ifs or buts about it

I wouldnt be so sure that wishere isnt ready, but I agree that if cesc does leave then gourcuff is the only player out there that Im aware of who could definitely slot in and replace him almost seamlessly.
Jack however might well be close to the point where he can start fighting for a place on the wing. Personally, Id rather see walcott go out on loan (obviously Im just dreaming here) with wilshere taking his place in the squad. He wouldnt be 1st choice, but would surely get a few chances to show what he could do, and u never know.

agree with paul. wilshere may well be very good but cesc fabregas he is not and to suggest he start the season as our captain’s replacement is crazy. my preference would absolutely be for cesc to stay but if he leaves we MUST get over £50 million for him and use the money for frey, mertesacker, melo, gourcuff and one other CB – i’ll leave that one to arsene but how about testing juve’s resolve with a big bid for chiellini? chiellini and TV5 with mertesacker then djourou then campbell (song there too if needs be) would be the strongest and most in depth central defence we’d have had for years / ever

I wouldn’t let the Cesc situation take away anything from what Jack has done and will do on a football pitch Paul. Jack will be in the first team if he isn’t loaned out a second time.

I think the perfect side for Jack to join on loan would be Everton. Especially as it looks like either one or both of Arteta and Pienaar will be leaving. Moyes is a good manager at getting the best out of players, he instills a good hard-working ethic but still encourages his team to play nicely. If Jack could force his way into being a regular for them next season it would stand him in good stead.

That’s an interesting thought. Everton always get injuries as well, so jack would probably get plenty of chances to cement a place in the side.

Listen you pathetic high-kicking little Nazzi,

I support Jack Wilshere as much as anybody. I actually agree with you 100% that he is a genius and should be given a chance next year.

The difference between me and you is that my analysis of Jack’s talent is not based on my fear and insecurity about the world. In other words I don’t rate Wilshere because he’s White like you do. You are incapable of giving JET, Afobe, Aneke, Frimpong or any Black player thier due because you are kicking and spitting with racist fear and self-hate. HaHaHa!

Spew all the whiny finger farts about “free-speech” you want. I actually enjoy having clowns like you on this site because you educate right-thinking people about what true respec for their fellow man actually is and about how to view the world. Kids who read your posts can realize they aren’t as pathetic and fucked up as you and thus will grow in confidence about themselves. This is a good thing.

So keep spewing your fear you little Nazzi! HaHaHaHa!!!! You will not succeed in bringing others down into the mud with you, in fact, many people will grow from it!

I haven’t seen any of his comments on this particular article as J removed them before i got the chance to but he’s always been a sad racist fucker. What amazes me is that some of you guys are only noticing now. He’s always had racist undertones in his comments and a few months ago enraged me by referring to Ozyakup as “the turk”. I actually said something to him about it but he’s in the safety of his own yard and thought he could run his mouth.

At the end of the day, i’m big enough and bad enough to ignore his insolent ways and that’s why i didn’t say anything to him about his comments on the Merida article although many did. I couldn’t agree more with what you say about how he shows other people on here how fucked up he is and how they aren’t as pathetic as him.

Jack should walk straight in the midfield, he’s better than Denilson, Diaby, Rosicky & Nasri.
Put Walcott on loan to Stoke to toughen him up.

I so agree with you..If Walcott makes it at Stoke, then he would have lived up to a quarter of all the hype..imagine if he was spanish..wont get within 3 miles of the national team..not that i dont like him, but he’s gotta do beta with his techniques and decision-making..wilshere will play better with Eboue and Sagna..he’ll also have a bag-load of assists crossing balls to Chamakh..just my opinions tho..

Wilshere is more than ready. Why do some fans want to hold him back? Like Cesc, Messi and Rooney he’s far too good to be loaned out or given cameos. At 18 those guys were regulars. The kid needs to have games invested in him right away, and not at some mid-table club. Put him on the right-wing, that’s where he excelled in pre-season and won two Man of the Match awards. He might need a little time to settle in, but 12 months from now he will be on a better level than either Nasri or Theo.

What’s he going to learn from spending another year with cloggers and journeymen, and second rate managers? He needs to be playing regularly with world class players.

It seems foreign players are insulated from loans. The players who should be on loan are Denilson and Fabianski. The two are not fist teamers yet.

Denilson played with a fractured spine since xmas, and well walcott is going to SA. wilshire is not. IF wishire was as good as you say surly he would have been in the pre sa squad instead of say Johnson. But he aint.

I don’t want Wilshere on the wing damnit! lol. Throw him into the midlle!! I’m serious. I bet he could handle it. He’ll be there sooner or later. IN the pre-season I’d play him exclusively in the middle and see how he runs things. The person who suggested that he go to Everton on loan makes a lot of sense. But I gwet the feeling that he will not go back out on loan if he can prove himself in training with the 1st team. And I think he will prove himself and stay with Arsenal at least for the 1st half of the season. Or if he does go straight on loan, it’ll only be for the 1st half of the season and not the 2nd half. So what I am trying to say is; I think he’ll only spend half a season on loan if he is loaned at all. But during the time he is in the 1st team, he’ll get more playing time than when he was in the 1st team last year!:D

Personally I don’t think Wiltshire will be given a central role if cesc goes nasri is the man for that he is absolutely top class in my opinion. But getting back to the topic I think wiltshire should and will be given arshavins place to fight for. Wenger likes to breed young players out on the wings, and it would give arshavin real competition for that role, so he has to really raise his game, after a really below par season by his high standards. His creative influence from that area of the pitch or even the right I think is where he would really thrive although he is not on the level of nasri or Ramsey to hold that central position at this moment in time. I think he should go on loan until January and by that time he will have enough experience to come in and be a real vital part of the squad.

JS What has happened to Mark Randall? I am a massive fan of the kid he really did look fantastic a couple of years ago for the reserves. He played like andrea pirlo with elegance, style, skill. Wenger was a big fan of him. Even Burnely player Wade Elliot said hes was a world class talent. He looked truly amazing

Has he been partying, taking drugs? Something has happened to him cause i thought he would get better and better.

Will he get released? Do you think Wenger will give him a final chance in pre season?

I heard he smokes but don’t know if its true. Hasn’t really shone on loan, has talent but makes wrong decisions when ever i watched him, tries flicks or difficult passes when not needed and is very lightweight. Don’t think he has a future with us with the likes of Ramsey, Lansbury etc coming through.

He was on trial and there was a strong interest but for whatever reason it didn’t work out. I think it was down to the work permit issues. He then went onto Porto but again there was WP issues so he went to play in China and Japan.

Wilshere is an immense talent and imo is ready to play a part off the bench. Lets not forget that AW sent him to Bolton primarily so he can get accustomed to the physicality of the EPL, and in his short stint at Bolton he has shown the determination and guile to go with his skill and flair…he is the type of player England are in desperate need of..technically accomplished, CM.

His best position is probably left midfielder-come-CM. He reminds me of David Silva so much.

England have plenty of technically accomplished CMs, you cannot tell me gerrard and lampard aren’t technically accomplished. What we miss is creativity and flair in the centre of the park and out wide and Wiltshire has that in spades; although I don’t think he is anywhere near ready yet for England. At the end of this season i think him and Gibbs will be pushing for that squad; Gibbs would be there now if not for injury.

L, I don’t think Gerrard and Lampard are technically great. They are both very efficient box to box midfielders, who can shoot and pass very accurately. They can’t really dribble though, and are not very confortable to keep the ball under pressure. They’re one of the reasons England struggles so much to keep the ball against good oppositions.

I think you are confusing technical ability with creativity and flair. Technical ability is their ability to play passes over long or short distances, through the incredible passing technique people like gerrard show when he hits those 60 yard cross field balls. Or the technical ability lampard shows in the vast variety of goals he scores year after year. Their passing and shooting ability make them great technical players. They lack the flair or vision to beat many players or find those clever defense splitting passes, and the creativity to create opportunities in the way of cesc for example. And yes I totally agree that is definetly what England are missing. Wiltshire has that flair, vision and creativity but isn’t ready for England yet. The comparision with silva of Valencia is spot on; noted in a earlier comment. Both very skillful, clever, creative players who also have a combative side. The future is bright.

Technical ability is touch, skill and the ability to keep the ball under pressure. Without it you can’t get “flair or creativity”.

Both Gerrard and Lampard are excellent box to box players who rely on guile and strength rather than skill. Technically they are not as accomplished as European equivalents and this shows against top European opposition when they are not proficient at retaining possession which so often leads to England’s demise. This is what a player of Wilshere’s ability and continental style can bring to the England team.

  • May 26, 2010 at 4:57 pm

Exactly what we need in the side. Character, Desire and fight. Not too mention his technical excellence.

I hop both he and Lansbury feature a bit more next season, the other lot in CM (we know who they are) just don’t apply themselves enough for me.

Say what you like but the English spirit and desire sometimes go further than technical skills but when you blend both…. Good lord
