Wellington Learns The “Bergkamp Role” With Fluminense

Arsenal forward Wellington Silva is learning the “Dennis Bergkamp” role with parent club Fluminense, after impressing as a substitute in the first two fixtures of the new Brazilian Série A season.

Silva’s stock has risen significantly since he signed for the Gunners and he’s now considered a star in his own right in Brazil. Promoted to the first team after an impressive pre-season, coach Muricy Ramalho is working closely with the precocious prospect. His two substitute appearances so far have yielded a new side to the 17-year-old, a defensive, hard working side.

Fluminense possess an impressive strike force, with Hertha Berlin loanee André Lima and former Lyon hitman Fred the notable names. Flu’s opening game of the campaign was a 1-0 defeat to Ceará, where Wellington was introduced with 10 minutes left. He ran, chased and tracked back well, as well as looking dangerous with possession. Operating just off Lima in a 4-4-2, he looked every bit a deadly number 10.

Yesterday saw their second game of the season. A home fixture with Goianiense, which they won 1-0. Again Silva came off the bench, and again he showed the defensive aspects of the game which impressed everybody. He still needs to tighten up on his positional and tactical play, but Wellington is learning to find a balance between his flamboyant, skillful style, and a defensive and hard working attitude he will need to succeed in Europe.

The future is looking very promising for young Wellington.

I saw the last game cause thought he would start. But number 10 ( dont know his name ) started for him. But as he got on you could clearly see his flair and ability. He is by far the best technical player in their team!!! Cant wait to see him in red and white!!! He looks also as a really humble friendly boy. So there shouldnt be a problem with his attitude like with other brazialians!!!

      arsenal4ever,

I’m sorry but this was a good comment until the end when it reached a level of idiocy that is rare even for the blogisphere!

“Brazilians with Bad Attitudes?!!!”… Are you kidding me! What Brazilians would you be referring to I wonder? The Brazilians I recall who’ve made a lasting contribution to the club of late are Edu, Gilberto Silva, Eduardo, and Denilson. Not one attitude problem among them. In fact, as a group their attitude has been nothing less than outstanding. The Brazilians who’ve represented the club have done so with nothing bot class! How you could be misguided enough to start labeling Arsenal’s Brazilians as having “attitude problems” is beyond me. Based on the impecable conduct of Arsneal’s Brazilians, I would love to have more of them. They could be excellent models for the French (Gallas), the Spanish (Merida and Jose Reyes) the Togolese (Adebayor), the Russian (Arshavin), and yes the English (Bentley, Ass’Hole, and young Zak Ansah who sings the praises of the Mancs while wearing our beloved Red and White).

And if you were referring to bad attitudes by Brazilians in general…those who play for other clubs…who ‘the hell cares!!! They don’t play for Arsenal so what’s it matter anyway?!!!

Whats about Robinho, Adriano and Ronaldinho? They dont have a brillant work rate. This was what I ve meant for example. They easily loose their fun if they need to work their socks off. Our brazilians had or have good attitude. In this case you are right!!

Well, he really is an out-and-out goalscorer, shouldn’t be transformed into a provider. With all due respect to Bergkamp and the role itself, Arsenal have an abundance of technical second strikers, someone who puts the created chances away is the main priority. Cracking prospect though, hope he turns out to be the goalscorer Arsenal need.

I also saw his last game, he didn’t get many chances on the ball, but when he did you could immediately see he’s a classy player. It’s also noticeable that his teammates looked for him when he came on and tried to pass to him. It’s shows they believe in his talents which is great seeing as he’s still an unproven 17 year old.
Think we’ll play him at LWF in the future. Anyway Wilshere has the Bergkamp role locked up!

Berkhamop was a support striker or a second striker wilshere is not he is a midfielder. Van Persie is the closest thing we have to the Berkhamp. I really hope to see him with Chamak upfront next year tearing up defence.

Wilshere isn’t a central midfielder. At the closest he’s an attacking midfielder, but his best position is in the traditional no 10 role, as Wenger himself has already stated. But he’ll probably play at RWF for us for the near future.

Wilshere always looks good on the right cutting in on his left foot and shooting, but can pick passes when playing in CM, like a young fabregas. Ive never seen him play off the striker though. I think people just assume he’d be good there (and they might be right) but I dont think its based on anything hes done yet…

Wilshere has played off the striker, as a traditional no.10 a couple of times with Bolton, that’s where Coyle used him against Chelsea.

Every one is talking about what Wilshere is lol like he can only do one position. You don’t have to look far to find a very similar player to Wilshere. INIESTA. Wilshere in the future will be a star at rightmid, one of the center midfielders, or if it is in a 4-4-1-1 then in the “bergkamp role”.

We could change in the future though. Invert our front-line to have one player behind two strikers, although we’d need fullbacks that are better going forward to provide width (ie: Gibbs at LB and Eboue or new signing at RB)

Wellington SIlva is technically brilliant and that’s why we bought him every player we buy are technically brilliant and all of them are great on the ball
His work rate has been awesome in recent games but when you come off the bench you are suppose to be full of energy and until he works like this an entire game I am not going to say he has a great work rate
What he does have is a fighting spirit a lot like wilshere and SIlva can play in the wings or as a support striker but I am sure with us he will be played as a winger his crossing in some cases has been out of this world.
He curves the ball past the defenders and places it right in front of the striker truly unbelievable and he does it regularly which is even more astonishing it might be the balls they use but unbelievable
I see him more in the messi mould than as a Berkhamp although I will love to have a next berkhamp aswell but in the striking options for the future we have Vela and Bendtner and they both will work really well for us in a 4-4-2 formation

I’m brazilian and a supporter of Fluminense and Arsenal (or if you all prefer, a “Tricolor” and a Gunner), and I assure you that Wellington is a good player and is a good kid. I watch every game of Fluminense and I believe the best way to improve Wellington’s skills is to put him in the pitch litle by litle so the press cannot spoil him ( yes, that’s a real problem in Brazil, the press overate youngters and spoil them for life like Robinho).
In summary, I’m sure Wellington will be well prepared for Wenger because Muricy Ramalho is a Champion (he won the brazilian championship in 2006/2007/2008 and know how to deal with the press and the youngsters). I hope the kid can put Arsenal back in the track of titles, cause we are struggling a bit, but like the crowd always say in Emirates: “Keep the faith”.

Then soon after he was starring for Barcelona on their way to the Champions league title before getting injured and not getting to play in the finals. Messi is one of the 17 year old that was just out of this world. Only 2 other I can think of that were that good at 17 would be Ronaldo and Pele.

he’s small and he’s going to stay small. he can dink around with the ball well enough but he will be brushed off it with ease in the premier league. maybe, maybe he might challenge vela for the left wing spot in 3-5 years.

i think the arsenal fans are loisng it bigtime. any signing arsene wenger makes is automatically assumed to be the next messiah. actually wenger hasn’t signed a really good player for cheap in a very long time. song, fabregas and clichy were the last batch. wenger is losing his touch cos these guys were bought ages ago.

Wenger wouldnt pay that much for such a young talent if he wasnt special. I heard they scouted him for at least 2 years!!! And 4 goals in 1 half for his first time playing against an english team isnt that bad I think. You are right he could have trouble with the physical game in britain but as far I am concerned I dont think so.

      Your wrong!

Vela, Bendtner, Diaby, Walcott, Ramsey, Szczesny, and Freeman would all easily sell today for 200-500% more than what we paid for them!

And that doesn’t even take into account the potential profit on players we’ve brought up straight from the Arseal Youth Academy. It remains to be seen what Gibbs, JET, Wilshere, Afobe, Aneke, and Lansbury could bring in from the market place, but suffice it to say that every one of these players will likely bring in far more than what it cost the club to educate them in the ‘Arsenal Way’. To say AW “hansn’t signed a really good player in a long time” is a massive stretch, IMO. It remains to be seen, but I believe the club will be making massive profits for the next 10 years or so on the players AW has either bought as youngsters or cultivated from the academy.

By the way would people stop writing about “who has the Bergkamp role” LOL. We play a 4-3-3, THERE IS NO BERGKAMP ROLE. Wellington Silva will make a fantastic winger. The kind of winger we need. He can run at players with pace and skill. He is also a goal scorer.

  • May 17, 2010 at 10:34 pm

I have seen enough of Wilshere to say that he would fit perfectly into the “Bergkamp Role”. I haven’t seen enough of Wellington Silva to say the same. From what I have seen he is more of a natural winger, and if he is being played in the middle, it may be to help build upon his physicality and defensive responsibilities. People forget how deep Bergkamp actually lpayed in order to recieve the ball. He really was more like an attacking midfielder than an out and out striker. He didn’t defend much, and he could score goals with the best of them, if he wanted to, but his best postition was right where he played. Between the midfield and the strikers, or right behind the striker in the 4-4-2. I don’t think we will go back to 4-2-2 anytime soon, so Wilshere will play in one of the two attacking midfield postitions or as a winger. I personally would like to see him play in the midfield because of his passing ability. The two attacking midfiled postitions are the 2 positions that most closely resemble the second striker position, or the “Bergkamp Role” in my opinion.

Coquelin is being tried to be made into a RB I thought everyone knew that and that’s the reason Eastmond was moved ahead of him in the DM position

He was moved to right back because Eastmond took over at def mid and we dont have a real right back in our youth ranks that was not on loan so someone was going to have to play there. Coquelin is not the answer at rightback. He should be being groomed at def mid. We will need 2 strong def mids and I think Coquelin should be one of those along witth of course Song. Just not a fan of Eastmond. Eastmond is a very very average player to me. Doesnt really put in tackle, cant pass over 3 feet. Just don’t see it with him. Kind of reminds me of a poor mans Denilson, but hey I can be wrong.

Just read an article that says Barcelona have bid 30 million euros for Eden Hazard. FUCK!!! There goes any chance of anyone catching up to them. They will now have 2 of the top 3 young wide attacking players on each side. If this goes through, defending Barcelona will now be vertually impossible. To make it worse, Barcelona is the only team that I believed would be able to compete with our crop of young stars in 2 or 3 years time. With them adding Hazard, I just feel it will be almost impossible to compete, god forbid they do get Fabregas from us.

I feel Hazard could be the signing that changes the next 10 years of football and yes 1 payer here or there can do that. In 2003 Ronaldinho signed for Barcelona. The year before Barcelona were 6th place and the 2 years before that they were 4th. The signing of Ronaldinho is the reason why Barcelona are now sitting on top of the world. I just feel Eden Hazard locks up Barcelona’s position on top for the nexts 6 years and like I said god forbid they do get Fabregas.

Arsenal4ever- Wenger is the only thing that keeps Arsenal from falling like Liverpool. Not going to get in another arguement about this subject though.

Andrew, for one it is one thing for a player to say he prefers a club but it is another thing on which club forks out the money to buy him.

On the Cesc thing, it wouldnt be as much, that he is leaving but more that he would be joining Barcelona who are already the top club in the world and if they add the best young centermidfielder and the best teenage winger who is the new Ronaldo/Messi…….that is not good for the rest of football considering most of their players have yet to even hit their prime.

shand admit it Wenger is shit!! He just sells every star each year!!! We need new blood especially in management. He was great but he lost it, fact!!!

You do realize we have had to pay off a loan that we used to build our new stadium right? You do realize Wenger has kept our team in the champions league every year despite working on one of the smallest budgets in the prem league while making a profit to pay of that loan? You do realize how incredible that is and he is probally the only manager in the world that could do that? You do realize that we are in a league with 2 multi-billinaire owners and Manchester united and liverpool? These are questions you can answer for yourself.

so now you are certain he will buy the required players? I hope I am wrong but I think we will on ly see Chamakh and a 1 or 2 CB`s and if Cesc leaves we will get Arteta, tahts it!! But we need a proper winger, goalscorer, DM etc. So I would say 4-5 players we still need to compete!!!

We are a self sufficient club so no we will not being spending 50 million pounds on a player anytime soon. We are also still paying on the loan. I think Wenger will sign centerbacks (number depends on if gallas leaves, and a keeper along with Chamahk. I personally think we need a top talent winger who can take players on, link up and score goals but I dont think that will happen. If you look at this year, if van Persie did not get injured (which i know he always does) we would have won the league. Also then Bendtner gets hurt an Arshavin has to play striker which is why we signed Chamahk. Then we still could have won if Fabregas didnt get hurt in the barca game. Relly if we just sign a good centerback or 2 and a quality keeper, we can win the league next year.

Agree about hazard damn barca are going to look unbeatable for us. Aggainst teams like chelsea or inter they seem to struggle though.

He had a bad game lol. That happens sometimes mate.

That is because Chelsea and Inter just play all defence verse them. That is the scary thing tho, you add Hazard on the other side and if cesc joined, I dont see how you could keep them from scoring for 90 minutes. I would be will to bet that they will be the first team ever to win every game in their league campain.

how about his missplaced passes in his few minutes aggainst liverpool. He didnt perform pretty well aggainst west brom either. I dont think he is ready at the momment. Eastmond seems to be more mature.

I doubt any team could win every league game.

I am talking about potential. Neither of the are ready to be first teamers.

Watch and see. If they sign Hazard and Fabregas, I think they could be the best team ever. Ibrahimovic doesnt really fit though. Still a great player but he isnt made for playing fast pace and having his back to the goal so often.

Hard to say imo. A Flamini/Hargreaves type youth player will always look flashier than a Makelele type. If Coquelin improves his positioning he can definetly become worldclass otherwise he will have to settle for a rb position.

Possibly the best team ever i agree also on Ibrahimovic. But if you take out toure and ibrahimovic for example an replace them with villa/hazard and Fabregas they will be physically weaker an shorter and could possibly struggle like us aggainst stronger/tougher oponnents.

Size meens absolutely nothing to a team that has the ball almost the entire game and have the quality they do. The ways Chelsea and intermilan did ok at holding of there attack was simply they just defended and focussed on Messi. Now you will have a Messi type on the other side and Fabregas who is a better scorer than the centermids they have. Now how do you stop them? The will be have the best players in every attacking position.

You know shane sometimes i wonder how cesc would perform for Barca as he seemed to stuggle aggainst top teams this year for us because he is the player we look for but at barca other teams wouldnt be able to double up on him like they do aggainst us and he could be one very lethal player for them then.
    So possibly you are right.

there are two team in spain that threathen for anything and its been the case every year for I dont know how long
Wenger was right that if you want to prove yourself as a great player then England is the best league any team can lose to any team e.g united to burnley but in Spain I think Barca lost 1 game in the entire season and the difference was 20-30 points

Fabregas I think will either play in defensive role in Barca first team or on the bench both dont suit him and REALLY I dont see him leaving one he has a lot of growing up to do as a player second Barca already have two great midfielders in Xavi and Iniesta
Xavi is 30 right now and after two-three more years he wont be able to play regularly and then Fab will take his place and Ramsey cant take his place win win in my view we make money they get fab and fab gets barca

WHAT FABREGAS IS LOOKING FOR IS TITLES WITH ARSENAL AND ALL HE WANTS FROM WENGER IS TO SPEND AND WENGER WILL PROBABLY DISCUSS WHO HE’S GOING TO ADD THIS SUMMER AND WHAT HIS FUTURE PLAN IS THAT WHAT’S THE MEETING IS ABOUT
MEDIA IS PLAYING ITS USUAL BULLSHIT

Shane your a fucking idiot. We’re supposed to pay our 350mill£ loan back over 20years. So why are we paying 120million of it back in one year? Why would we cut our loan by a 1/3 in one year when we have absolutly no need to, everything was in place we had a full proof finacial system in place to pay it back.

I ask why we didnt spend half of that on players? Makes no sense at all. Do the arsenal board not realise that there is middle ground available. It dosnt have to be pay our loan back and buy nobody. We can do both in equal measures. Also some people on here need to realise that liverpool sppent 250mill on transfers and were run by two twats without a clue. Spending 30mill at least this summer is not going to financialy cripple us, it will mean jack shit in the long run of this club.

I am pretty sure you are the stupid one. We took out a loan of 260 million pounds which was then spread out through bonds. You have to pay intrest on these which is why Arsenal are paying them of faster. We have made alot of progress through selling players at a higher value than what he is worth. Fuck it, I am not explaining this again. You are probally right. You know more about business and financing than the entire Arsenal board and Arsene Wenger.

So why are we paying 120million of it back in one year?

Those were the terms of the loan mate. Everything relating to highbury flats has to be paid off by December 2010 to avoid huge penalties financially. We’ve already extended the term of loan once. Now any money left from sales is straight into the clubs bank and we decide exactly what we want to do with it.

So when January comes there will be plenty in the kitty too

Well I’m too tired of defending Eastmond on here, so i’m not going to. There is a rumour that Ibrahimovic could be headed our way in the Fabregas deal , along with Toure. I don’t really want this deal to happen, and i don’t really know how Ibrahimovic would fit into our system if he couldn’t fit into Barca’s system.

The only players I knew were Keane, Wickham, Afobe and Aneke. Aneke is injured now?? That sucks. I love watching him play. No one else plays like he does as far as I can tell in this England squad.

So is Chucks just been left out for no reason other than the coaches think he isn’t good enough?? With the conditions like they are, he would be ideal out there because of his technical capabilities. The pitch is probably hard to run and dribble on because it is so wet. But that wouldn’t stop CHuckes, I don’t think!! lol. Yup the coaches are stupid, but that’s the case when it comes to youth in the arts as well. Trust me I used to play the viola and I only made my national youth orchestra and city orchestra on the 2nd or 3rd attempt. And I knew i was better than a few of the players who did make it. This type of thing happens everywhere. It’s too fucking obvious to pick the best players, so they pick the foot soldiers instead of the truly talented players. And then when they lose, or it doesn’t sound good they MIGHT learn. Usually they never do.

Lol it was Afobe, decent strike but took slight deflection. Afobe looked ok when he went on the left for a bit, still needs to improve that side of his game.

And I think Chuks must be injured, he featured in nearly all the qualifiers so don’t see any reason why he’d be left out. Wickham has been slightly dissapointing.

I don’t know what more he needs to do, John. Even if you take the last two games, which were on TV. He’s scored four goals in two games, basically made the second goal today with his link up play, and against Nottingham he won the penalty for Freeman and then burst down the wing and squared for Freeman to tap in for his second. He can’t do much more mate, he’s on fire at the moment.
