Simpson Offered To Cypriot Champions Omonia

Agents working on behalf of Arsenal striker Jay Simpson have offered the services of the forward to Cypriot Champions Omonia Nicosia. The 21-year-old has been told he free to leave the club this summer, although he is keen to remain in England.

Simpson is about to enter the final year of his contract and returns to North London after a season in the Championship with Queens Park Rangers. He bagged 12 goals in 39 fixtures for the R’s but his form tailed away in the closing stages of the season and a permanent move isn’t on the cards. League One side Peterborough United have expressed a tentative interest.

Omonia are prepared to offer Jay a lengthy contract with a large signing on fee, after being tipped off by former Gunner and close friend of the striker Georgios Efrem. Simpson is keen to hold off the offer with the hope of a move to a Premier League or top half Championship side, but if that fails to materialise, a short term loan with a a view to a permanent deal could go through.

More to follow.

Average player who would never make it in the Prem. An inferior Christopher Wreh.

I agree, he had talent !!! Just needed toning. Plus he is a Gooner through and through. He wouldn’t want to run off to Athletico or Barcelona in a few years. He could have been our next Ian Wright !!!!

A big loss as far as I am concerned. He was a true “”goal hanger””. Just what we need.

Maybe one day he’ll come back home :)

It is a shame has to go. Sincerely, I was hoping he will play for the first team one day. It is unfortunate but it will be add to see a striker breaking into the first team from the academy except Afobe.

Thanks Alot J ! Once again some excellent reporting and a different perspective from other arsenal sites.

Can you shed some light on the possible signing of Tomas Kalas from Sigma Olomouc ? Word has it , Chelsea have pipped us in getting him even though Arsene Wenger himself had a world with him. He is a 17 yr old CB

I would be surprised if we didn’t at least get a £1m fee with add -ons. If we keep letting players go for free, the academy will have to be supplemented with first team funds. The Luke Ayling deal still sticks in my throat. Perhaps Gazidis should pull his finger out instead of talking gob shite all the time. From what I understand we have the greatest business minds recruited yet we are riddled with inefficiencies.
Even if we let players like Hoyte, Gilbert, Dunne, Ayling go for free mid-contract with sell-ons at least we can harvest their potential in the long-run. As it stands we are simply losing money.

Yep, we are riddled with inefficiencies

That’s why we’re the only club in the PL that currentlly meets UEFA’s financial standing rules

Being the financial genius that you are, riddle me this. What if no one is willing to pay a million pounds for him?

i agree…some mugs in the premiership would be willing to pay £2-3m for him on the back of a few more carling cup games. and having a sell-on/ first refusal clause would give us a little cash boost/ chance of resigning the player in the event that he turns out to be a late bloomer, which is always possible. why just let him go for free? it’s like burning money.

do we pay the highest prices in the league to watch our club piss away their assets like this?

Andy, Shane and Amit, why are you taking offense at a little constructive criticism? I am a Chartered accountant and am forever doing SWOT analysis, i am simply calling it how i see it. I think after 18 years as a fan i am entitled to my opinion.
Clearly Andy has ADD as he would have read my last line and seen that there is more than one way to skin a cat.
I think that what they are doing is amazing, however there is always room for improvement, i believe they call it kaizen Andy, perhaps when you get a chance you can look it up.
To emphasize my point, do you think that the Flamini or Ashley Cole deals were efficient? Its wonderful living in a bubble isn’t it.

its true we lose out on some serious cash in some deals but we make quite a lot of money on most of our deals
Recent Examples, Ade – 25m, Toure – 16m, Henry, hleb and so on

As for Flamini I think Wenger till the very last day that Flamini will sign a new contract with us and he probably still cant believe that after making Flamini into a world class player flamini will leave wenger hanging
Cole is c%nt and we all know that when a player does what he did its better to get rid of them as fast as we can

I am not saying that wenger doesnt get it wrong he does but we are probably better in the transfer market than probably any other club in europe.

      Nice revisionism there mate.

You claim to be offering constructive criticism, but you actually say that Gazidis should “pull hit finger out” and “stop talking gob shit”. You also claim that we are “riddled” with inefficiencies. That’s total BS and not constructive at all. If you want to wail and bitch like a self-entitled fan, you are free to do so, but don’t expect anyone to treat your whinging with any respect.

We are the most efficiently run club in the PL, and certainly the financial results show that Gazidis has been performing well.

Andy your blind loyalty is admirable, however consider the following:

–Assets disposals at below market value include: Edu, Ashley Cole, Flamini, Diarra + proportion of Highbury Square flats (not including net losses on youth academy players released)
–2008 Net profit margin: 16.46% in 2009: 14.52%. What does this show? INCREASED INEFFICIENCIES! club explanation: retail, utility and direct costs increased (inc emirates cup)
–Impairments to Highbury square flats: £167m write down.
–figures have been softened by weaker sterling vs Euro = more favourable Champions League turnover (we all know what has happened to the Euro since)

I’m adult enough to admit that the rant at Gazidis is not justified, however I stick with my comments regarding our inefficiencies. As a supporter and a stakeholder, a better utilization of resources is desirable.

You can check all this on the link below, however if you cant read a sentence properly, Financial Statements may be somewhat more taxing.

Because the English player might be even less likely to ‘make it’ than Denilson.

This is the real world – you can’t edit someone’s stats in real life and make the come good after all like you can in football manager. If a player isn’t good enough to succeed at Arsenal then the sooner they’re allowed to go and pursue a career at a more appropriate level the better for them and the better for us.

Sell on clauses. This is the way to get money back on players who leave before they play for the first team.

It makes sense, that way they are effectively on our books without us having to pay their saleries.

We pay Bendtner and Denilson 50k? What rubbish. They don’t get paid that much and they’re better than the English equivalents we have at the club and the ones available. Do you seriously think Lansbury is better than Denilson? Lansbury played average for a championship club where as Denilson has had good games (and bad) playing against premier league opposition week in week out. As for Bendtner, who would you replace him with? JET? you must be having a laugh. Bendy has scored enough last minute goals to deserve his wages.

    capello is disastereous
first of all he does not pick walcott in the squad
then he decides to take lenon off for SWP. lenon was england’s best player while he was on the pitch. I’m sorry but as good heskey is in the air, he is twice as bad with the ball at his feet. there is not enough movement on and off the ball in the centre of the park and the left wing is not a very creative area of the pitch for england. glen johnson was an absolute joke in the algeria match, several times when he had the ball in england’s half he could have ran with the ball but he didn’t. Lampard was the worst player on the pitch.

simpson has no chance in getting into the first team so it is good to let him go now.

arsenal4ever : don’t be to sure that germany will beat ghana, ghana will give you less space in the middle of the park for ozil to play and ghana were incredible quick to the second ball against serbia.

I am sorry to see him go, but lets be honest here, Wenger is normally right to let them go… 1 good game doesnt mean anything. (the 2 goals vs Wigan)

E.g Pennant… full debut was a hat trick against Southampton if I recall correctly… where is he now? Real Zaragoza and had an awful season, he has been disciplined for being late for training and hasnt scored a goal in 25 games.

In fact he has scored 5 goals in 5 years since he left us.

David Bentley is going backwards, he started showing potential at Blackburn but now he is just a bench warmer at Spurs.

And I forgot a lot of the others to be honest.

And can the Denilson haters please stfu? is Denilson the most underrated player we have ever had? I am starting to think so…

Going by stats he is actually not just one of our best players, but one of the best players in the league,,, he is by far the best intercepter of the ball, he is the most accurate passer, his tackles won ratio is actually higher than specialists defensive midfielders, he has had games with 100% passing accuracy, he can score from distance.

Yes, he has his flaws, but for christ sakes, he is still a young player, you should all be giving him the recognition and support he deserves… instead of saying he is not Arsenal quality and isnt good enough.

those are often quoted stats to support denilson, but that’s mainly because he rarely makes forward incisive passes.. they are either square or back to the def/gk.. he doesn’t add much going forward.. certainly no essien..

but then again we need to be clear on what we expect from a player in his position.. do we expect goals? assists? or are those the jobs of wingers, creative midfielders and forwards?

Denilson is a squad player. Why does know one understand that. He will be a good servent to the club. Back up for all the big talented centermids we have. Plus do you numnuts realise that there is more to football than just on the field. Having players that help other brazilians (wellington silva, eduardo) and other players who speak other languages and live other life styles, adapt to the new country and lifestyle helps alot.

Denilson was a big talent when he arrived. His first season he looked like what Ramsey looks like now. Thierry Henry even said he had never seen a player adapt to the league as fast as Denilson. The fact is Denilson has not fullfilled his potential. He does not look the talent that he could have been. I think he is a role player just like Eboue which you need those players. People forget that we dont only play games. We practice aswell so we need more than 11 players. Good squad players are needed in any squad so Denilson is fine.

Part of the reason we could have let him go is because JET is now officially becoming a striker. And with the likes of Vela going to start getting more first team chances, considering he is the same age as Simpson, and now JET moving nearer, and with any more signings we get in the transfer market this summer, Simpson simply won’t be able to get anything more than meaningless matches and Carling Cup games. I mean he is already 21, and although to most people that is young still, which it is. It’s just Arsenal don’t have room for “one for the future” on their first team when it’s been 5 years since their last silverware! I would like to see him stay of course, but maybe he is just coming through Arsenal at a poor time when they need experienced players who can produce results in the present, not in 3 or 4 years, and you can’t ask him to wait around that long, so it was in his best interest Arsenal let him go. IF he were stay and play for the first team, he would be behind Van Persie, Bendtner, Eduardo, Vela, Chamakh and even Walcott would get a striker role before him- that puts him 7th in line to start…he would be fighting to even sit the bench every week, let alone getting on the field or starting…

I never really see JET breaking into Arsenal first team but with the form he was in for Doncasters and Blackpool who can question him
I think JET deserves a chance in the PL next season maybe a six month loan to a top championship side and if he does well there then a PL side.

I would love to have a striker with his physicality leading the line for Arsenal but still cant see JET breaking into the first team

he has tried his best but i don’t think there is achance for him to break in the first team with all of you bitching wenger to buy new experienced players like the likes of David Silva. he went out on loan but wasn’t so impressive, look at Bendtner, he went on loan to Birmingham and his goal tally in the two years on loan was the third best in the league, look at Vella, he went to Celta Vigo and Osasuna and everyone was impressed which also made him one of Mexico’s untouchables alongside Dos Santo. Look at Wellington Silva, he’s been on loan in Fluminense and everyone is hopeful of him, no one has praised the loan spell Jay Simpson has got, he wasn’t pleasant enough in asmall team, how will he be in Arsenal when he’s not even in our golden 30’s not even in the England National Youth stars of tomorrow. lets not over-rate and over-exagerrate.

On the issue of Denilson, he is the second most concentrated and calm players in the Arsenal team next to Cesc. he intercepts, tackles hard, shoots from long range, young and fills u with hope, is in the top ten most accurate passers in the premier league and has the exceptional Brazillian touch. Guyz Denilson is young and needs time like Clichy got the time since he came at the age of 13, his future appears to be bright.

didn’t wenger give him a new contract not so long ago? or am i thinking of someone else?

if he’s just being released mid contract, no sell-on or first refusal clause, no transfer fee, then i will be disgusted with the judgement of the club.

there seems to be a belief at the club that if you’re not world class by the age of 21 then you will never amount to anything. that’s horrible in my opinion, and idiotic. was ian wright world class at 21? jay simpson could be the next ian wright, a late bloomer, a legend…but now we’ll never know.

    well done arsenal. clap…clap…clap…

Why do people support arsenal when they dont like the way its run? go support chelsea or west ham theyre are a lot of london based clubs you can support

@gunner 17 who do you thinks knows more about Simpson you or Wenger?

Most clubs can’t afford to keep a late bloomer and late bloomers would benefit more from a stable playing environment at a lower division. No point constantly loaning them out season after season at different clubs. This is the best move for both parties if he can’t make it at Arsenal.

Anyway, most top clubs have the policy of releasing their youth players if they don’t make it by 21 or 22. Frankly, can’t think of many players who’ve gone on to become a hit at top level except for Ian Wright. Most go on to become solid pros at PL, or CCC level.

all i’m saying is that he could come good at 24/25…and if he does we should have some claim on him, in the form of a sell-on clause at least.

we are broke. we’re paying off massive debts. we’re scrounging around in the free transfers bin. we should be looking to keep a claim on these young players so they keep generating cash for us ala bentley, diarra.

and since when does a supporter have to agree with the way a club is run in order to be entitled to support it.

you’ll have trouble selling that idea in leeds/portsmouth/manchester.

I feel a bit upset if he is not used by Arsenal. I see him a fast player with good stamina and finishing, a bit of another J. Defoe, hope some teams would borrow him or buy him out. Hope I can see him playing for another club in P.L.

just checked arsenal, com They announced at the end of Dec 2008 that Simpson had signed a new long term contract. All i can say is that in the 18 months since he must have put in some poor displays for QPR . Lets be honest is he as good as Bendtner, Walcott and Vela who are all about the same age as Simpson and international players. Bendtner being the most successful of the three both internationally and with Arsenal, why do so many people not rate him?

People want Simpson to do well because he is home grown & English, but as we are seeing at the WC English players are not good enough. I for one do not want to see a team full of inferior English players at Arsenal. If there are good English players at the club that are better than the foreign ones then fair enough. Wilshere, Aneke, JET, Lansbury come to mind as players with that potential (altho i doubt the latter 2 will make it, either) whereas Simpson, Gilbert, Hoyte, Randall, Ayling quite frankly are not ever going to be good enough to hold down a place in the first team. If they go on to develop and progress elsewhere then good luck to them, but i doubt with any of these we would live to regret letting them go. Eastmond & Cruise also need a loan spell to see what they are capable of, my feeling is they too will be reasonable players but not good enough for the first team on aregular basis.

As for everyone slating Denilson, this young lad statistcally is our 2nd best midfielder, the unfortunate thing for him is we try to use him as a defensive Midfielder and his not that type of player. Wenger on occassions has a knack for converting players into new roles, however, with Denilson it has not worked. His best games have been when Song plays giving him the chance to express himself going forward, hence he has grabbed a few goals. In fact he scores about as many as Walcott, Rosicky, Diaby and Nasri. When you consider how many matches he has had to play as DM then his goal ratio is pretty good compare to the others.

he has a pretty good long range shot hence the goals
Denilson shows his best talent when thye play 4-4-2 where both midfielders have to defend and attack.
I still think Denilson was brought in to fill the boots of Gilberto Silva and he really just needs to bulk up and learn to provide the final ball.

Bendtner for me is one of the most improved players if you see what he did after he came back from injury. He knew we needed him and he stood up and scored 11 goals in 13 games, for a 22 year old who just came back from injury you cant ask for more
He showed his lack of finishing in the Burnley game and I thought that he will sink after that but he rose up and scored a great hat trick in the next game. I became a fan of Bendtner after the Porto game and I think he is a lot closer to the finished article than 99% strikers of his age.

simpsons signed a new long term contract on December 29, 2008 so does it mean he signed a 2-.3 year contract. I dont simpson is going free I think he will be sold and we will get a sizable fee.

i really hope we get a little fee of £2-3m plus a sell-on clause. that would be good sensible business.

I don’t think we’ll see something like £3m as he’s only proven himself in the second tier of English football, and with 21 year olds they could be gambles as they might end up being a different player to what their potential promised. But I hope we get a decent fee too I suppose.

If I remember correctly, Simpson only signed a contract, or was only offered one on terms similar to Sunu, because Wenger wouldn’t allow him to go out on loan as his contract was running out and he would be a free agent who could leave for nothing if he impressed on loan.

I don’t believe that there was ever an intention, or thought that he would make it considering his age and the fact that minus the Carling Cup he hasn’t been involved in the 1st team.

I think he can do a job at a top championship or lower premier league team but surely at his age he needs to be allowed to go out and craft a career for himself. That would more than likely in England and all the best to the lad.

Why are people upset about this, he was never gonna be a star at best all he could have hoped for is warm our bench. Its the circle of life (for our youth football) another player will come up and replace him and so on, and we keep doing it and making tidy little profits untill one day you’ve got a real star on your hands who we can sell to barca for 40mill later down the line, and then it starts again…..

Dam John!!!!! We agree…!!!! Finally…!!! I’m amazed!!!! I couldn’t agree with you more!!! Very smart and insightful comment…spot on!!!

Simpson wasn’t good enough technically and a trip abroad would do him good, as it would many young promising English players. Lack of technique is the dead weight English footballers carry into every match. It makes legs and minds heavy, and it forces English players to always run slightly uphill relative to the more technique-focussed international counterparts.

For the England fans that didn’t drink the “England is a World Cup contender” kool-aid and still have a grip on reality. i urge you to reflect on John’s comment! It’s at the corps of the problem with English football. It’s a shame to see Simpson go because my understanding is that he’s been at the club a long time. But the truth (which is being painfully born out in blisteringly stark clarity at the World Cup) is that despite the overwhelming and relentless onslought of bullshit media hype, you can’t win the world cup or contend with the Brazil’s and Argentina’s of world football while clinging to a NEOLITHIC ATTITUDE TOWARD TECHNIQUE.

Jay Simpson’s a good kid but he wasn’t good enough for Arsenal. I turst that Wenger and the staff got this right.

The disease of English football is is the stubborn belief that any attempt to inject more technique into the English game will somehow compromise the essence of “The English Way”, or “pure English football”…………….. UTTER BULLSHIT!

But unfortunately this disease has long ago metastacized throughout the English game and the effects of thIS metastasis are on clear display in Southern Africa as we live and breathe.

totally agree kc, another thing, while the spaniards or the brazilians brush up their technique and on-the-ball skills, EPL players spend their time hitting the gym trying to last the high paced game for a full season. or even worse, they spend their time nursing dreadful injuries. For all FA cares, its a foul only if you dont get the ball, dont matter if you clean the legs along with the ball, also, apparently, breaking someones legs in two is only a three match ban.
i dont know how can one expect EPL players to improve if the moment they show some skill on the ball, they are subjected to some nasty fouls.
Right now, EPL teams have a pace advantage over other European leagues, once other teams work that out, EPL’s glory days in CL are gone.
A high pace game would have suited Arsenal in the CL game vs. Barcelona but to control the pace of the game you need to have the ball.
first half possession stats of 27-73 tell quite a story.
without good technique and on the ball skills, you cannot hold on to possession for too long. If this happened to arsenal, whose players are the most technical in EPL, you can gauge the technical abilities of other EPL teams.

For things to change FA will have to sit up and take notice, there is no otrher way around the issue.

I am sure that Jay Simpson is a nice boy, but he is decidedly limited as a player. His technique is poor. He has good movement, but his lack of technique means that he could not hold the ball. He has good movement, he is more a darren bent style of player who plays on the shoulder of the last defender. Unfortunately Arsenal does not need that kind of player.
I am not sure that going abroad would help him, because I think that experience and play time can improve your vision and understanding of the game it cannot give you more technique. If despite being at Arsenal who put an emphasis on technique he still lacks technique at 21 years old he is unlikely to improve on that.
The problem with the England team is due to the fact that most English viewers have an inflated view of their team that does not correspond to the reality.
Most of the England players are competent players, but none of them are world dribblers. They look good at Club level because there is foreign players that let them shine (Valencia’s cross let Wayne score, Drogba’s physical presence and malouda’s dribbling let Lampard score, …) without them they are just functional players. English players have a lot of endeveour and a lot of energy, however against the very best and/or the very well organised it is not enough. Moreover at the World Cup, most team are highly motivated and players will put their body on the line. They will make the extra effort that they would not do at club level. Bar Wayne Rooney, Ashley Cole and Joe Cole comparing the England team with the Algerian team man to man, most of them have better technique and better tactical discipline.
