Dagenham 1-2 Arsenal: Scouts Swarm After Deacon’s Winner

Neil Banfield returned to the Reserve team helm last night to guide an Arsenal XI to a notable 2-1 win over Dagenham and Redbridge. Roarie Deacon’s 84th minute strike proved decisive after Romain Vincelot had cancelled out Sanchez Watt’s opener.

Banfield had only been back in the country for a matter of hours after taking in pre-season training with the first-team, and another staff member from Austria, goalkeeping coach Tony Roberts, lined up in the Dagenham goal. Banfield made four changes on his return, bringing the more experienced Jay Simpson and Nacer Barazite while Ignasi Miquel and Cedric Evina also started in front of swarms of watching scouts.

Shea
Boateng – Hoyte – Miquel – Evina
Ozyakup – Randall – Barazite
Murphy – Simpson – Watt

Arsenal’s Reserve pre-season has been mixed under the tutelage of Liam Brady, but with Banfield at the helm, the Gunners had menace and rose to the challenge against the newly promoted League One side. The opening goal came after just 19 minutes when Simpson burst inside and slipped Sanchez Watt away through the middle, he raced clear of the back-line, rounded Roberts and scored. 1-0, It was a perfect start.

Miquel was the captain for the night and he was on hand to stab Mark Arber’s re-bound off the line after a sloppy punch from James Shea. It was a warning. Danny Green was next to have Shea scrambling as he worked a yard of space and just slid his low effort wide of the post. Murphy could have made it 2-0, but Arsenal went down the tunnel in front at the break.

The second half was just four minutes old when The Daggers grabbed themselves a surprise equaliser. Vincelot beat Hoyte in the air to head home Damien McCrory’s cross after a good move started by former Gunner Abu Ogogo. The fixture began to get stale as the half wore on, so in search of the winner, Banfield made two positive changes. Afobe and Deacon were introduced in what would prove to be an inspired double switch.

Afobe first stung the palms of Roberts before he was finally beaten. Deacon exploded inside and from all of 20 yards, he snapped a left footed effort which gently rolled into the corner. Shea was on hand to save from goal hero Vincelot in the final moments, but the win was Arsenal’s.

most of the reserves have already signed professional terms with the club so we dont have to worry about losing our players
scouts swarming is probably championship or PL clubs scouts looking out at some of our youngsters and checking if some of the youngsters fit theirs requirements or not

Stonroy – there was loads of scouts at this game

Andrew – It’s very unlikely. We’re pretty much done in the market for young players.

hopefully its not the same for the first team

as for the reserve XI you mentioned above
only ozzy, boateng and shea will probably stay with the reserves all the rest will go on loan in my view

Sorted the article in line with the confusion.

Andrew – I think you’re right mate. I think Simpson and Hoyte are free to leave for the right place, maybe even Randall too. But the rest except for the names you said are for loan.

We’re now running into a problem I thought would happen – that the next crop of youngsters is ready to graduate, only to find that the current squad is full of the previous crop. It puts Wenger in an awkward situation, because his principle is: give youngsters their chance and then be loyal to that chance. Now he has to change tack and take away that chance and give it to a younger youngster. Coupled with Wenger’s dedication to squad harmony, this really could be the dilemma that decides Arsenal’s future.

      no awkward situation
the best will make it, other will be sold on a profit

this will mean young players trying even harder to become better than the first team players and first team players trying to get better to stay better than the current crop

a good example is messi. Ronaldinho was running the show but messi emergence made barca sell him and they have gotten better they haven’t gone backwards

same for the fab situation emergence of players like Ramsey and WIlshere means Fabregas can be sold in a year or two and players like WIlshere & Ramsey can take over and maybe do an ever better job

Competition is the name of the game

    1) funny that the other team has no goalie at all!
    2) how was barazite?
    3) what about özyakup? seems like he isn’t impressing so much and maybe him not getting on the dutch u19 squad was the right choice by the dutch trainer?

      3) The boy is only 17 years old playing aggainst grown men that will be playing leauge one next year. He was on the dutch standby list. I think that sounds quiet good.

Some people dont seem to understand how hard it is at such a young age to play agginst grown men with years of expierence. When i came out of the youth team in my local club i struggled aggainst grown men even though i was a far better playing as i was little bit lightweight and missing the power to win challenges.

to be even included as a 17 year old in a dutch midfield for an under 19 team is more than impressive its astonishing.

Can anyone tell me where and when the exiting Brazilian Wellington da Silva is going to be playing for Arsenal? I thought he was coming this year…… to join the youngsters or the reserves.

Its great to see so many of last years young guns in training with the first team, I believe that their promotion together is essential to their success, they will bring their confidence from their past together.

I love Frimpongs energy, he’s like a hound all over the opponents heels! JET astonishes me, his proportions are wierd and wonderful, top heavy brute manouvers the wings and frontline with silky tricky feet. Nordveit looks composed and trustworthy. Then there’s Jack we’ve all been waiting for. With the usual injuries in the first team I’m sure these four will all feature more than they anticipate.

JS is it true Neil Banfield was a superb talent at a young age injuries just ruined him?

I heard Ray houghton on talksport say Neil Banfield was one of the best young players hed had ever seen.

Also think per mertseacker would be a brilliant signing. We need aa dominant centre half in the air yh hes got no pace but when you got guys like sagna, clichy, vermaelen, koscielny, djorou it doesnt matter.

Mertersacker is quicker than senderos and hes very composed unlike senderos and cygan.

Would be a great signing plus when we play teams like stoke, blackburn he will be dominate in the air.

THESE ARE THE PLAYERS I WANT WENGER TO ADD
    GK
    Marchetti – 5-7 million euros
    DM
Anthony Annan – 4 million euros (just to p**s united off)
    CB
    Any good defender
Diakhate will be a good signing 8 million euros

that’s what 20 million euros and all three players can really put us to the next level

Well Reality is a bit different wenger will look at the needs and then decide
our necessities are a GK and CB
      luxury can be a midfielder

      GK
Almunia aside we have 3 goalkeepers in there 20s and any of them can become our no.1 in the next couple of years although Szczesny looks like the most likely and keeping that in mind
I think wenger’s first choice is Schwarzer who will be around 2-3 million, if he can’t get him then he can go for Marchetti in my view

      CB
with only 4 CBs only Kos and Verm can be relied upon because DJourou is coming off an injury that has kept him out for a year and Nortvedit has just been brought into the first team
we currently have three right footed CB and one left footed CB so adding another left footed CB is more likely.
an in my view Diakhate will be our next signing his club want to sell him and arsenal have been tracking him for over a year now.
Diakhate for 7 million might be our 5th choice CB

      as for a midfielder
Miguel Veloso has been linked with us and maybe because he’s was being tracked by arsenal and they want to stop his transfer to Genoa but I am not holding my breath on this transfer

I think Wenger will be smart
and buy Schwarzer for 3 million and Diakhate for 7 million they both fit the bill

as for a DM i will really want us to sign De Jong from city as I am sure he is surplus to requirements now at city and he wont be cheap but you wont better DM than him in EPL
      (NOT Realistic Though)

I would be shocked if diakhate and marchtti would join us. Diakhate´s postioning is awful and he is a terrible defender imo. Marchetti isnt better than fabianski. If we had a decent psychologist fabianski would be a great keeper and senderos would be a starter. He has it in his locker but after one silly mistake he falls apart. The highly rated lloris doenst have more ability than fabianski imo.
All the gk´s we are being linked to arent better than Almunia.
Someone like Neuer or Bengalio would be perfect.

I personally haven’t seen DIakhate play but Sagna thinks he’s good and wenger has send scouts to watch him play in france and in Ukraine
so there must be some interest in him if wenger is scouting him and now his clubs are willing to sell him

    • July 29, 2010 at 2:23 pm
      Permalink

We scout so many players all other the world it doesnt mean much really. Sagna was talking about one game and they are possibly friends.
If Kiev want to get rid of him well then either he isnt good enough for them or he is possibly a troublemaker. If the rumours are true that we have been scouting him for years then they most likely wouldnt say something like that because it would bring the price down.

Btw Bengalio, Juan and Inler would make a perfect summer for me but i know it wont happen.

there are so many player who will good for arsenal
but we must be linked with a player
      random players means nothing

personally mertesacker might be a better CB

    • July 29, 2010 at 2:46 pm
      Permalink

Mertesacker is ok. But who knows 4 years ago he was looking very impressive and maybe he needs a new challenge. Naldo his partners is more aggresive though and would be better for us i think. But im not sure with bremen defenders they concede just as much goals as us.

Geromel from cologne isnt bad either or hummels.

Our young guns have the league cup to show their ambitions and abilities. I hope myself this is the year when we will not expect young reserves to fill gaps when key first team players are injured. Especially as the first team needs to be strengthened as it is. I really like AWs ability to raise youths, but the balance is not right, under performers like Diaby & Denilson get to many chances, which hasn’t made them progress at all. Denilson is simply not the right material, Diaby is not focused and determined enough, that would change if he new he needed to work harder to play. AW needs to tweak his philosophy, he is only a few additiions away from success.

Y’alright people… I apologies for going off subject here but I’ve just been reading into the whole Portsmouth situation and really wanted some opinions on an idea! Anyway… It turns out they have no first team goalkeeper!!

    http://www.portsmouthfc.co.uk/squad/first-team.aspx

Now correct me if I’m wrong, but since Portsmouth are in a bit of trouble, there is every chance we could see them struggle in the championship next year… and since we at the Arsenal are looking to strengthen our number 1 spot this year… it looks like Mannone and Sczeszney may not get their chance, so what do you reckon of a loan move to a championship side in Portsmouth which is likely to have a lot of shots against ????

Well obviously thats true andrew, I realise we’re not playing championship manager here. I reckon wenger should at least offer one or the other to Portsmouth for a month, and if they get played, increase it to three months, and if they’re still being played increase it to the rest of the season. It’d be good experience and a chance to see if they can hack it. (going by the whole league 1 at Brentford, chesney looks like he’d do okay but at least it’d give mannone a chance to get a bit of a repuation after he apparently didnt do too well on loan before…)

I feel for them too James… that John “Portsmouth Football Club” Westwood cant be an happy bunny!

Yeah they do have great fans. I used to go quite often to fratton park when i was a boy.
But since i moved to germany 12 years ago i havent been there.
The players would have a great chance of playing time there they are very short on numbers and a lot of there reserves have been giving playing time numbers.

Yeah it’s not that far away either, if they left home early enough for training it’d take em just under 2 hours there and back… and if they moaned about it I’d say welcome to the real world.

They probably will blood some of their own reserves in there as well, Portsmouth reserves aint a bad side are they?

it is a great idea except pompey have a transfer ban and were only allowed to sign 3 players 2 of which i believe have alread come in on loan so im assuming the next will be a goalie and plus wenger looks set to keep all our goalies this season as he is rather unsure of who will be 1st choice this season, it might be a you make an error you sit on the bench season for the goalies

He has moved to Hamburg to be 3rd choice left back to play thire tier german football instead of being a possible starter for portmsouth. They gave him playing time as a starter at left back last season for the last 5 games.

Andrew to answer your question about how good Banega is that you asked in the last post, I’ll answer that for you. He’s the best defensive midfielder in Spain right now and one of the best in Europe. I saw him play 8-10 times last year, and every time he impressed me a lot. I also watched him at the world youth cup in 2007 and that is when I first saw what he could become. Those Championships were held in my country of Canada and all of Ardentina’s games were televised. We all saw Kun Aguero, but the second most impressive player by far in that tournament was Banega. He had a quiet final, but throughout the rest of the tournament he was the dominant force. People think that he isn’t good defensively, but from what I saw last year, he has markedly improved that side of his play. His release clause is only 8 million pounds and Valencia is bankrupt right now. They’d probably take 10-15 million pounds for him in a heartbeat!! I have a feeling he’ll either stay at Valencia or go to Liverpool.
