Szczesny Set For Loan Amid Handanovic Signing Reports

Wojciech Szczęsny is close to sealing a second loan spell away from the club, according to reports in Poland. Arsène Wenger is keen to carefully nurture the prospect, amid speculation in Slovenia that Samir Handanovič is poised to join the club.

Wenger reassured Szczęsny and fellow youngster Vito Mannone that they have long-term roles to play at the club during a meeting at the end of last season. The Frenchman also re-affirmed his belief that Wojciech is the future number one, although he admitted it was unlikely he would break through this year. That news came despite an impressive loan spell with Brentford, in which the 20-year-old made 28 appearances.

Szczęsny returned for pre-season with the first-team but he hasn’t been included in the team to face Barnet. Wenger has instead kept faith in his goalkeeping 1-2 from last season. However, the club have been carefully monitoring Udinese’s Samir Handanovič, and today Slovenian news outlets are rife with reports that the Gunners will announce his signing shortly. Whether that information is true or not, another goalkeeper is on the cards.

Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer appeared to be the first-choice. At 37 he would represent a stop gap while Wojciech and Mannone earned experience. That is still the plan, but the links to Schwarzer have gone cold, and there is a real possibility Wenger could turn to a younger option. That would certainly anger the Reserve duo, who have already said they would leave if chances don’t open up.

A whole host of clubs have expressed an interest in Szczęsny. He was recently considering a temporary switch to Italy, although the Championship seems a more real possibility. Wherever he ends up, a route into the first-team is becoming a little cloudy.

Update: Handanovič’s agent rubbish’s links in Slovenian newspapers. Szczęsny story still applies.

No way ever Ray Parlour told me directly through ATVO he is AFC best prospect and his personal favorite. I really think Mannone and Szczesney will be fighting for the No.1 spot next season? Also I feel we don’t need a GK this season just some DB with height we were killed on set pieces last season I just watch all highlights for last season Alumina might be @ fault for maybe @ best 3 goals? Go gunners….

Schwarzer is too expensive for his age and I dont think hes really any better than almunia. It concerns me how often we’ve been linked with average players like him, upson and jagielka this summer.
Imo szczesny should be given to a top division club somewhere. I really think he has the ability now, but I suppose we shouldnt go into a season with a young keeper as our no.1 unless hes really proven himself – so hopefully he will be given the chance elsewhere to do that. This loan move should definitely be taken very seriously and considered carefully. He needs matches, but is capable of top flight football imo, so it might be tough to find a club that is willing to take on a young keeper and give him a realistic chance of match time. Maybe birmingham would be a good bet as they gave hart the opportunities last season, which was a positive experience for both parties, and I suppose hes returning to man city this year?

I’d rather have “flappy hand ski” than Mannone

Samir Handanovič is a very very good option and I wont mind mannone leaving but Szczesny HELL TO THE NO
schwarzer seems such a good keeper to get he’s the right age, right price and better than Almunia

if we do sign Samir Handanovič I wiil say szczesny still will need two years to be ready for arsenal first team and will Samir Handanovič be happy to become no.2 then I doubt it

by the way any idea how much it will cost to get him?
if it less than 7 million euros then I will say good price because we can certainly sell him for a lot more after two years but if its more than that is he really worth buying

I have no problem with MS coming into the club, I thought I read somewhere he MS is looking to stay on after with the club in a coaching role also? But back to MA he only needs a haircut and he will be fine!(JK) Personally it’s lack of height @ the back that’s hurt MA? Be interesting to see what AW does in the next month for now I’m going to focus on the current squad! Also you don’t like the JET( One of my favorites from when ATVO showed live reserves do you go to games or just watch through the tele/internet? Where do you live? I agree with what you say, but I dont know why on earth szczesny would need 2 years to be ready. Age is just a number and keepers have started younger than 20 at big clubs, casillas for one. To me, szczesny looks mentally ready, which is all that’s really required. He clearly has the talent. I think a lot of keepers have the talent. Almunia is an immensely talented goalkeeper, which he has shown on many occasions, but lacks the mentality of a great keeper. Szczesny always seems to be switched on and focused and never appears to lack confidence. You’d want him to be tested at a higher level before entering a season with him as your no.1 but I wouldnt say hes not ready now. I certainly wouldnt attach an arbitrary amount of time as to how long it will take him to be ready, no offense

I watched all 3 of his WC appearances and thought his keeping to be of a high standard. All keepers at the WC looked like Flappianski because of the ball, mate. It was obvious that almost all keepers preferred to the punch or block than trying to take the ball because of the late swerve. He only conceded 2 goals at the tourney and the Defoe goal was pretty much unstoppable.

Handanovic is not a decent keeper and all this buying a stop gap to wait for szczesny to be ready is pathetic.

I know of no other club that would do this! If you have a decent keeper then play him! If he isn’t ready then don’t play him but don’t hedge your bets that he’ll be the nuts in 2 yrs.

If we bought a class keeper of 26 or whatever then if in 2 yrs the young pole is good enough he’ll make the grade and unseat the present no 1.

In 2years we don’t need to worry about Cesc with Wilshere and Ramsey with Song still holding or maybe even Eastmond.

Mannone and Chesney both need season long loans if another keeper comes in and Almunia isn’t sold.

Both are capable of being good Championship level keepers at their current ages and it would definitely benefit them both in the long run.

With regards the currently linked transfers, I wouldn’t mind Schwarzer at all. I read that Given was being linked which could make sense because they released Taylor, but then re-signed him and neither Given or Hart are going to want to play understudy.

Not seen much of Handovic but i did read Buffon’s comments.

People on here dont watch football thats the problem.

I have watched alot of serie a games especially udinese who have alot of talent in zapata, sanchez, gokhan inler – A player who arsenal could do with.

But handanovic has never impressed me you watch when we go up North to Stoke, Blackburn watch him flap, doing his superman thing, going down when someone touches him.

I worry about his handling and commanding his box. Hes not very vocal and i think he will crumble under the pressure at arsenal with 60,000 ppl there not 15 ppl u gt at udinese.

Woijech szcensy is the better goalkeeper he should be given a go

OK HOW DOES THIS IDEA SOUND

city have two very good keepers in hart and given right?
both of them want to play week in and week out right?

why dont we loan one of them?
both are good enough and city will love for their keeper to get PL experience

I doubt City will sell given so getting hart for free will be a brilliant idea

after a good or a great next season behind Szczesny he can compete for our no.1 spot

this is the cheapest and best option I can think off
    better than Schwarzer or Handovic

Schwarzer doesnt fit in the greatest keeper of his generation but he’s reliable, he will always keep our back line organized, he will make sure people are doing their job right and after his retirement his coaching job at arsenal can be a great thing to have

only a few clubs ever get a goalkeeping coach with almost 20 years of top flight goalkeeping experience behind him

Just put Wojciech Szczęsny as the no. 1 keeper and we have solve our goalkeeping problem

I know he is only 20 years old but if he is good he should be given a chance. He did not concede any open goal while in Brentford. Our problem is in the CB where they are not tall enough. Mertesacker is the solution at 6’7″. Last season, gallas was rubbish at the end of the season. The title chase was gone when TV got injured.

yeah Teoh, but playing in goal for Brentford against Rotherham or some such club in front of 2000 fans is quite differnet to playing at Emirates or OT in front of 60,000. No, he needs some time to be ready. Let’s not potentially destroy a truly wonderful talent. A small dose of patience and strategy needed here.

This blog is fantastic for reserve and youth team news and transfers, the best out there, but when it comes to first team transfer news it is rather suspect to say the least, handanovic to Arsenal has just been a rumour and as his agent has denied any contact with Arsenal too.

Also the blog seems to be certain there is ‘nothing in the Joe Cole’ rumours. It’s pretty obvious theres something. There’s no smoke without fire and if there wasn’t why hasnt Cole signed for Spurs already? His agent can’t be talking to them about wages for the past few weeks. Wenger loves to deny rumours linking players to Arsenal, yet he didn’t for Cole, he changed the subject. Cole doesn’t want to leave London either so it’s out of the two. Cole will be an Arsenal player Jamie mate, and theres no doubt about it.

You’re welcome to your opinion, of course. I didn’t say Handanovic is happening at no stage, just put the link in as it’s of interest. We got the Laurent Koscielny spot on, so please don’t be short sighted in your views.

There is no proof in the Joe Cole rumours. Wenger said he didn’t want any new midfielders, and recently said we don’t need any attacking players. It’s just hype and people’s desire for Cole to come that is feeding the rumours. A newspaper or source quickly becomes untrusted when they say something people dislike and vice-versa. I’ll keep your e-mail address and if he signs, I’ll congratulate you. But what you’ve said is pure speculation.

Like I said, even if you get a bit of transfer news a little off the mark, your overall quality of work puts you head and shoulders above any other Arsenal blogger, fact. (and I am one myself!)

I’m just saying I noticed you always seem quick when dismissing the Joe rumours when the gaffer hasn’t even denied the rumours himself yet, and we all know how quick he is to shoot down rumours. He was asked whether a deal was in place to sign Cole before the WC, and with a rise smile he just talked about his qualities. Didn’t give a yes or a no. Maybe Weng already knows the deal is done which is why he said no more attacking midfielders.

Or maybe he just said that so Barca don’t think we’re looking for a Fabregas replacement. Anyway like you said let’s wait and see. Keep up the outstanding work.

I think that would be really positive for theo/carlos in the long run, and frankly I think wilshere is more ready for arsenal’s first team, certainly more ready than theo. vela hasnt really had a proper chance yet, but playing regularly for bolton might improve his confidence and he could start banging in goals come the end of the season.

If we’re gonna get a gk, I hope it’s one who’s not supposed to be a stop-gap. I like Chesney, and I believe he will become a real star at Arsenal if he has the patience, and the balls to stay on and compete for a place, even if Wenger does buy a top quality keeper in his prime. I don’t really care how old the gk is, as long as he’s top quality. I don’t want us to sign a gk if he’s not a clear improvement from what we have. Diego Benaglio would be a really good signing methink.

I am from Slovenia and must say that Handanovic is really good GK. He was class at the World Cup and in qualifiers, well he made a mistake against USA but it was defenders fault too…Probably we wont sign him but if we do, he will do good work for us, I am sure. But I think the best option for us would be Frey, he is class and by the time he will get old, Chesney will be ready for 1st team. But for now I would send Chesney to Championship or lower PL side to get more experience…Mannone would be 2nd choice and I would get rid of Flopianski and Almunia.

I don’t think Joe Cole will come because he’s demanding lunatic wages that no one – not Chelsea, not Liverpool and most certainly not us – thinks he is worth. Spurs will pay up. Goes without saying.

I don’t want Joe Cole within 100 feet of an Arsenal training pitch, never mind being a replacement for Cesc. Anyone who thinks of himself as highly as he does is a danger to the team. He isn’t worth 120 k per week. Fuck he’s hardly worth 70k per week. I’ll be sorely disappointed if we do sign him. It will just cause unrest within the squad. What will players like Rosicky and Nasri and Wilshere and Eduardo think?? These guys work just as hard and are all just as good as Cole if not better. FUCK JOE COLE!!!!! FUCK HIM!!!!!!!!

Yeah John you are right. But seeing that we don’t have him, I don’t think we should get him. BTW I’m a proponent for playing Szczesny right now. Why not play him in all the friendlies and see what he can do. And then give him a few Premier League games. If he doesn’t do well, it doesn’t mean that he won’t be our future number one, and if he does well, then keep him in there until he struggles right?? That’s how I see it anyways. Obviously Arsenal management think differently and that’s ok. We can’t agree on everything right?? He’ll probably be fine either way.

I would love to see us bring Given in. He an unbelievable goalkeeper and we really missed out when decided to leave Newcastle. Jaaskelainen from Bolton is also a wild card choice – extremely consistent, experienced in the PL and 35 years old so he should be in his prime. I would think Jaaskelainen would cost less than £6m.. possible more like £10m for Given but definitely worth it.

Off topic, Fabregas isn’t due back until the 2nd Aug? If this is correct its strange that he wont even be around during the Emirates Cup

The thing with szcensy is that hes young and arsenal have to sort out thier defence.

Some ppl think we have a problem in goal which is why our defence is so weak i disagree almunia is a quality goalkeeper who rarely makes mistakes hes just scapegoat. I can only rember a few mistakes like the birmingham and barcelona game. I cant remeber any more

Until we sort out our full backs and centre backs we wont win anything and no goalkeeper in the world will solve this problem.

Almunia has been better than petr cech but chelsea won the league why is that? Petre cech has been awful this season. We need to sort out our defence!

Simple good defence carvalho, terry are quality centre backs with alex as back up

Are you mad Almunia is one of the worst keepers in the prem name three worse in the prem than him you cant. He just cant handle pressure we gave him alot of time to get over the nerves but he has been at fault for too many errors since he started we might of won the champions league in 2006 might of won the prem this year if he was better and that danny rose goal should have been saved this year, even when he played the best l ever see him play against barca at home this year second half what happened he run out towards zlatan wen he should of stayed if you go back though all the games he played in he lost us so many points and the players dont trust him at all should have got rid years ago rant over. By the way this is a great website, well done J so keep up the goodwork mate only wish you talked about the first team as well

Cesc is unreplaceable so pls don`t mention J.Cole and Cesc in the same sentence.Cesc will stay as I taught for most for the time coz Arsenal are in control coz his contract ends 2015.Support the guy and make him feel welcome,he is world class.I just hope Wenger will sign 2-3 more players and show some ambition so we can win the league…Maybe today after the game Wenger will talk about transfers…My fear is Almunia will still be no 1 and I`m 99% sure….PLZZZZZZZZ let me be wrong.

We can talk all we like about what player or this player we’re going to get. In reality what we’ll really get if we’re lucky is one or two cheapies instead of one or 2 good quality players. Either he’s got the lolly or he ain’t if he ain’t that’s very understandable but if he has he’s giving us a very good impersonation of Scrooge. Wish he’d give us an excellent impression of Lord Spendalot….

Here is the proof. I stand to be corrected. He did not concede any goal even in a penalty situation. This was the compilation from Young guns earlier. I think the League one strikers must be sick of him stopping everything thrown at him and hoping that he does not return to Brentford. And he plays in some really shit pitch in those games. He stopped anything from direct, high, low, one on one and etc.

I think he should be no. 1 when he has already played for Poland his full national cap considering Poland have really good goalkeepers.

He is 6’4″ and from those video. He does not look small in front of goal. Sell Almunia and Fabianski and get some money to buy a really good CB. Vito is good enough for the no. 2.

Yup, I think he could be the next fabregas for his position. He always looked so calm playing for brentford like nothing could affect his focus, which shows maturity for a gk I think – something almunia really lacks to be frank.
I do think it would be a huge risk to chuck him in at the deep end. We can only speculate how well he would take to the additional pressure of playing in goal for arsenal compared to brentford. To me, he looks a level above our other goalkeepers mentally, and so should definitely be given a chance, but we need to have a solid goalkeeper in place in case things go wrong. It would be extremely tough to get a quality gk who would be willing to come and play as backup to an unproven 20 year old, so the best thing to do would probably be to sign someone with some experience, handanovic might be a good option there, as no.1 and keep szczesny as no.2. That way he could get some experience in the odd CL game and cup games, but its also likely he would get the chance to take over as no.1 if/when the 1st choice keeper gets a knock or something.

Davi, there is no sense in keeping Szczesny as number 2 when he could be on loan playing regularly. Young keepers develop more quickly playing every week.

mannone got lucky against Fulham (palming the ball across his own box 3 times) – what else has he done to tell you this?

One lucky game doesn’t make a good keeper

Would Steve Bruce risk Sczczesny? Search me. I guess it depends on whether he can sign a new no. 2 to replace Fulop (who wants out) before the window closes. He won’t be looking for a new no. 1, e.g. a Schwatzer or Given, having already spent a record fee on Craig Gordon. The only keeper he’s currently got is a kid even younger than Sczczesny. Where is Sczczesny, by the way? Will he be going to Austria?

The problem we had were not with the defense per se but more with our defensive play.
At Chelsea it is ingrained that when they lose the ball the entire team not just the defender have to try to get it back.
Remember when Manchester ‘I Owe You’ scored break away goals against us, only Denilson (Who had a bad back) and Vermeulen raced back. Everybody else was still standing near their goal. Rooney would have raced back to wrestle the ball back. He may have got a yellow card for his trouble but they would not have conceded.
We do not concede enough of the little tactical fouls (not nasty or violent) that stop the opposition. That start with the attacking midfielder: Nasri, Rosicky, Walcott, Arshavin.
Also our full backs need to work better with the rest of the defense. Only one should be ahead of the play at any given time.
Against Blackburn we conceded goal when both Clichy and Sagna were both deep in the opposition camp.
Handanovic may be a goal keeper in Italy but the EPL is much more physical and I am not convinced that he could handle that side of the game.
Tech9 looks like the real deal to me. I have seen a couple of game and he seems to be quite vocal in organising his defense.

Anyone who has Arsenal TV Online go ahead to the match centre and have a look at The Teams, the starting XIs have been confirmed and there are a few odd surprises.

    Starting XI:

    Fabianski
    Nordtveit-Koscielny-Vermaelen-Traore
    Rosicky-Frimpong-Wilshere
    Arshavin-Simpson-Emmanuel-Thomas

Bench: Szczesney, Mannone, Miguel, Djourou, Gibbs, Eastmond, Nasri, Henderson, Lansbury, Barazite, Walcott, Chamakh.

So that’s Simpson stepping in for Eduardo and Almunia replaced by Szczesney and Mannone.

Shut up u lot on the goalkeeping situation! Wojciech Szczęsny should be given that spot now! I followed his loan spell throughout at Brentford and the guy is a monster of a keeper. What does his age or maturity got to do with it? Just take a look at Casillas at Real Madrid. Enough said!!!
