Arsenal Take Stuttgart’s Gnabry On Trial

Arsenal have taken VfB Stuttgart youngster Serge Gnabry on trial. The powerful attacking midfielder has linked up with the Under 16’s for a week-long-training stint.

The Gunners have beaten a whole host of European club’s to take a closer look at Gnabry, who won the Player of the Tournament award at the Nike Cup. Although born in Germany, Serge is the son of Ivorian immigrant Jean-Hermann Gnabry, who works as a coach and trainer for Stuttgart. Jean-Hermann took his son to VfB after he moved from TSV Weissach, where Serge began his early playing career.

The 15-year-old is a tall and powerful attack minded midfielder who can also play wide on the right. Blessed with superb pace and excellent quick feet, Gnabry also has a collection of athletics medals. His 100 metre sprint times are among the best in Europe for his age group, and other notable success has come in various high jump events.

Gnabry shone during the recent Nike Cup after a season for the Under 15’s where he’d bagged 30 goals from midfield. The player himself is open for a move to Europe and lists Barcelona as “the dream future move”. Tall, strong, powerful and with a combative all action style, Serge looks to be a real player for the future.

If his dad is a coach at VFB is that gonna influence his move? Don”t we need the parents to move with him to London?

ivorian like ghanaian naturally produce a serious amount of quality midfielders.
the toures and essien to name a few
get him in and we have chuks around if he starts flirting with barca….

If we can train the kid up then sell him to Barca for silly money, then that gives us even more cash to devote to talented kids that do see Arsenal as their dream club.

Whats the problem that his dream move would be Barcelona?
Thats almost everyones wish but who cares, when they not want him he can say it all day long… he will be delighted to get a chance here at Emirates, he agreed for this trial…
We have also a player like Walcott who is a fan of L’pool, and he plays his best matches against them…

It’s true, plus he’s FIFTEEN YEARS OLD. People change as they grow up. If the club treats him really well, he may decide that this is his home. Not every player is the same. I doubt fabregas would really care at all about barca were it not his home town. Whoever he supported as a child he is certainly mature enough to recognise all that arsenal has done for him. Maybe this kid would be similar.
A player with the the sort of pace Im guessing he must have based on his record has got to be worth a shout. He can take walcott’s place perhaps

Well maybe the kid will change his tune once he gets a look at our facilities and our track record with young talent. We do have a lot of attacking midfielders though and I would hate to see him push out the likes of Aneke or Ozyakup. I guess we have to go after and keep the best players though.

Why would you hate it if this lad pushed out 2 others? If he is better that is all that counts, i am sure that both Chuks and Ozzie have pushed someone else out along the way. That is the nature of making it as a pro footballer

Nordtveit, Miquel, and Bartley were all signed from other youth clubs, and in the first team we have Clichy, Gibbs, and Traore all signed when they were teenagers. we’ve also got one or two homegrown kids who might eventually become squad players, like Cruise and Boateng. Eastmond was also originally a defender.

I really think some Arsenal fans are underestimating how big our own club is, how illustrious our history is, how attractive our style is to potential players..etc etc

In other words forget about the whims and boyhood dreams of prospective youngsters..that should in no way affect our decision with regards to acquiring them.

bla – all things being equal of course he would, so would most of us. That’s rarely the case.

Is weighing up more than one factor in decision making too difficult for some of you?

Or think about it this way – your dream girl might not be your girlfriend. Does that mean you are lousy in bed with her?

I guess we would have loved he said arsenal was is dream move, but we have a lot of youngsters that come on trial and move on, i would love for us to keep him if he is that good and later he may stay and help us win trophies or go for a big sum. I really dont see arsenal losing either way.

Honestly people, Think about the future !

In 8 years time when this kid is 23 years old, Barca will be even more debt ridden than they are already, and Arsenal will be one of the major powerhouses in world football that is self sustaining. If he has great potential we should snap him up regardless of who else now has competition in the youth set up.

Youth setup = “europes best young talent competing and developing as a team and individuals in order to be good enough for the clubs starting XI”

as wenger says…. it does not matter about your age, your nationality or even who you support as a boy, if your good enough you will get your chance.

Those players are hard to judge they make look brilliant at youth games but in real first team football they might look different players

People need to relax. My dream move would be Arsenal but you think I wouldn’t accept offers to go on trial with other European clubs? I wouldn’t say no to clubs such as AC Milan, Juventus, Lyon etc just because I’m a Gooner. As long as a player puts 100% in I don’t think it matters who they support or what they’re dream move would be.

Hiro, he doesn’t have a German name. His first name, Serge, is French, which is fairly normal for Ivorians, and his surname is presumably Ivorian – it definitely isn’t German. Is he of German nationality? Hope so, from the work permit point of view. Also, it would be good if he opted to be German in footballing terms, otherwise he’d be disappearing to the African Nations every couple of years.

Off topic: will both Polish keepers get 45 minutes tomorrow? Am really hoping Szczesny excels and he isn’t the one who Wenger says will be sent out on on loan. The thought of Fabianski or Mannone as number 2 fills me with dread. Szczeny, on the other hand, could really push Almunia, if he’s given a chance.

He is a german boy. His father is an ivorian and came to germany for several years, but Serge is born in germany and has a german pass. Because of that we would get no problems with the work permit.

He is very powerful and he has at the moment a physical advantage, of course, but he is also a good player with a high intelligence.

people should get realistic .this isnt the 19th century! if we sign young foreign players ,nurture them and make them into stars there will always be a possibility they might leave to a club capable of paying more in wages or in the case of spanish going to real or barca.if we start winning trophies we would have more chance of keeping future foreign stars.there are no guarantees in life and if you or i were in a similar situation being offered better wages or a dream move we would probably jump at the chance.if arsenal get the chance to sign great future prospects then no matter the nationallity then we should do it.

How many of the current first team dreamt of playing for Arsenal?

    Not that many I’d guess.

I’m a season ticket holder but my dream as a kid was to play for AC Milan. However by the time I was old enough to have done so the players that I had admired so much had moved on.

I mean how many Chel$ki or Citeh players would even have looked at the sky blues or the trolls from under the bridge if it wasn’t for the oil money? Does that mean you would pissed off to hear we had signed Robinho and Cech?

If Arsenal start to win trophies again, more people (especially those over seas) would dream of playing for us. What we need to do that is the most talented and professional footballers available to us, such as FAB4. Where there dreams lie is nowhere near as important as where they actually play!
