Arsenal Hand New Squad Numbers To Reserves

Arsenal have confirmed new squad numbers for a host of Reserves and Youth players by submitting their Champions League squad for the new season.

UEFA also include home grown rules in the Champions League, but these are much more loose than those issued by the Premier League. As always, the squad number allocation is based alphabetically. Meaning Benik Afobe and Chuks Aneke took 33 and 34, while James Shea and Nicholas Yennaris claimed 55 and 58.

Wojciech Szczęsny keeps his number 53 shirt, indicating it will be a permanent number for the Polish stopper. There was no place in the squad for Reserve team captain Ignasi Miquel, although that’s believed to to be down to the aforementioned home grown ruling. Emmanuel Frimpong’s long term injury saw him miss out, too.

You can view the full Champions League squad along with their new squad numbers on the UEFA website.

Frimpong didn’t miss out he’s #35. There’s a few gaps too so maybe we’ll see returning loanees or some reserves becoming homegrown.

Am I right in thinking Lansbury hasn’t gone out on loan. A good thing is to keep him in case of injuries and such. He can be a very useful player.

The number mean nothing in terms of who is more likely to figure, its in alphabetical order (surname), the club has been doing it for years, 32 seems to be the cut off. Not sure why, maybe because they are lazy and it is easy.

The starting point was 32 last year because Luke Ayling had it, but I think Wenger changed it to 33 because he realised 32 is a relatively wanted number, Merida wanted it when he was promoted to the first team squad.

Plus the CL numbers aren’t necessarily the same as the PL numbers, they can differ. If memory serves, Merida changed to 32 quite late last year

Nah the numbers will definitely be the same. Merida changed from 46 (which was his number by alphabetical order) to 32 because Wenger officially promoted him to the first team squad.

You can’t include some players just because they are playing for the reserves man. Many in your team sheet will not be here for much longer. In Arsenal the future will always be bright. just because we can buy top class players. Too many are untested in your team.

I don’t agree with JW partying and be around the wrong crowd however Pearce has record for trying to destroy the confidence of young players ala Theo. God help us if TheFA give that useless twat the England job

    • September 7, 2010 at 2:58 pm
      Permalink

I can’t fucking stand Pearce. Not cos of the JW thing but simply cos i think he’s one of the worst managers i can remember seeing……along with Graham Taylor. Trust me, as a footballing man, SP is very, very inept. I hate the man simply because he’s being looked after by the F.A and given such a prominent role with regards to developing future England internationals although he’s just going down the same old route that many have trodden before him and slipped, fell and never got up. The same will happen to him. He played a major role in fucking up Theo’s season last season by forcing him to play in the under 21’s championships and then annihilated his confidence by dropping him after a couple of games in that same tourney. That’s a full England International (who, incidently has NEVER lost whenever he’s represented the full England side), who he brought into his squad because he just wanted to win the tournament. Not to develop his talent(s) the RIGHT way, not to give him a taste of what to expect in these international tournaments but simply to WIN it by all means necessary. He failed miserably as England had their arses handed to them by a Mesut Ozil inspired Germany who trounced them 4-0 in the final. Surprise, surprise.

But how the fuck does that happen? How does the guy you have demoted from a higher level fail to make your team? A guy you strenuously demanded join your squad for these championships even though it was very, very much against his club manager’s wishes. His club manager who you PUBLICLY disagreed with regarding the matter. This was just a classic case of a manager who specialises in developing young talent, who knows what you should and shouldn’t do when dealing with such precocious individuals and then you have a grade A claffy, a mug, a clown, a fool who only wanted to win the tourney to pump his patriotic ego and show people it can be done the ‘good ol’ English way’. That’s all he knows, and that’s all he’ll EVER know. He won’t do a Steve McClaren, a Stuart Baxter, a Tony Adams or a Roy Hodgson and hit the continent and learn that the game of football does not start and end in the British Aisles. He’s too much of an arrogant neanderthal for that to ever happen.

I can’t remember what his excuse for dropping Theo during these championships was – nor can i be bothered to try and research it, but it was probably futile like the excuse he gave for JW’s omission. The thing is, he can’t break Jack like he did Theo last season, simply cos Jack is a lot more stronger mentally than Theo. He’ll bounce back with no problems IMO but there you have that problem again where a young Arsenal player has been demoted and now can’t start for the under 21’s (where, despite being the youngest player in even that squad, still looks easily the most comfortable player at that level, more so than good talents like Cleverley, Rodwell, Sturridge, Carroll, Richards and a few others), cos ‘he’s taken his eye off the ball’….Please! Does that mean Rooney has also taken his eye off the ball and should maybe start on the bench tonight? Fuck no! Pearce is a mug and i, for one, don’t buy his shit.

Congrats on the Portugal result and good luck for today but he will always be a very limited manager who has his current role because of who he is and not what he can do. I don’t know if he ever does this but he really should thank his lucky stars that his squad is composed of a lot of young talent where most of them have a LOT of Premier League experience such as Micah Richards, Nedum Onuoha, Lee Cattermole and Fabrice Muamba to name but a few, who have dug him out of a hole on a few occasions. If he didn’t have this quality at his disposal, then everyone that rates Pearce as a decent up and coming manager will see exactly what i see/mean…….

……and that’s all i have to say about Stuart Pearce.

well this is football and you will be disappointment at times. leave with it and work harder. just because you are playing with some players who got a call up doesn’t mean you will too. they are playing in another position. imagine james shea being pissed for not playing as much as others from the u18 team which won fa youth cup.

this is no different. miguel is playing in a position where you needs a lot of experiance and not just talent.

Most likely, the reason why Miquel didn’t get one was because there are certain homegrown rules that apply for the Champions League and he is so young, still 17, he probably doesn’t qualify YET. There are a few gaps in those squad numbers which implies Wenger may update it in January when more players are eligible.

But then, Afobe, Aneke and Yennaris are 17 too, and tey are listed. And then there is Damian Martinez, if Silva got number, how come he ain’t got one?

I’m a Crewe fan and I have to say, he has really impressed.
Dario Gradi is well known for bringing through many of the best football league talents, the likes of Dean Ashton, Danny Murphy, Luke Varney, etc.
He is definitely in the best place to develop, and he started out as a winger, but he likes the free-role with the capacity to roam inside. In many ways the football Crewe plays is similar to Arsenal.
One problem though, Crewe never ever ever sell a youngster until they have fully developed and broken into the first team, no matter what the offer. Powell may still play for the reserves and U-18s as much as the first team in order to get first team football, so it could be a while before we get him. I remember when a £1m offer was made for Dean Ashton by Arsenal when he was developing (which is a lot for Crewe) and it was rejected straight away,
      But yeah, he’s good.

Really proud of Jack Wilshere today. Once again, he showed the world what a fantastic talent he is. For those of you who don’t know, England lined up like this today against Lithuania:

    Fielding
    Walker Smalling Jones Bertrand
    Henderson Mancienne
    Cleverley Sturridge Rose
    Welbeck

It was 0-0 at HT so Pearce brought Walker off, moving Mancienne to RB and JW went into the middle. Jack then proceeded to dominate the game, calming his team-mates around him, keeping it simple and getting forward to great effect including sliding Welbeck in for the all-important opener and then playing a big part with the third and final goal which Welbeck also got.

Leroy Rosenior was commentating on the match and he noticed the change in the game straight away, even going on to have a little pop at Pearce for not starting Jack, stating that your best player should ALWAYS start if they’re fit enough.

Danny Welbeck scored two and made the other for Albrighton in a three-nil win but apart from that, he was quite poor in possession and very wasteful at times although his work-rate was top-notch. Naturally, he was named MOM but don’t get it twisted, Wilshere was the much needed catalyst who flipped this game on it’s head. Sturridge was very bright throughout but finished poorly and Phil Jones is going to be a top, top CB that i would love Arsenal to buy before his price rockets and we miss out on him, but the rest will need to do a lot of improving to be regular England players i feel. Time is on their side though – well, at least for some of them.

good post TJ. Jack was clearly the difference between the poor first half and the quite entertaining second one. So classy on the ball.

I was impressed with Sturridge. He finished poorly but he’s got class.

overall this U21 team looks a lot better than the previous ones. I read somewhere that Baldini asked PEarce to stop playing Muamba & Cattermole… good call ..

the technical level was pretty good sometimes in the second half. good to see Cleverley & Wilshere exchanging passes for the first goal.

ps : impressive performance from Aneke with the reserves tonight. Can’t believe that he was overlooked by Blake’s U19

Haha. If that’s true about Cattermole and Muamba then i’m not surprised one bit mate. The whole point of this level is to develop the talent and get them ready for full international level. I see no point in retaining players over the age of 21 at this level. I may be mistaken but i can’t really think of any other nations who do this as much as Pearce. Players like Cattermole and Muamba are decent at what they do but both of their passing abilities leave a lot to be desired, they won’t become England regulars any time soon i believe, but you never know.

These two have had many chances to impress at this level and i remember Cattermole having one MOM performance but that’s it. Apart from that, they were just mediocre at best on the many occassions i saw them play for the under 21’s. It’s time for players like Rodwell, Lansbury and Eastmond to be given their chance at this level now. Pearce doesn’t know how to bring talent through and needs to be told by Capello and his staff who to give up on and who to push through. In fact, i’m willing to bet it was Capello’s team who told Pearce to fast-track young Jack. I’m about 95% sure that was the case.

They can’t continue to ignore players like JET. What’s their excuse for that? Cos he doesn’t play regular first team football? Then why a very average player like Danny Rose? Why Chris Smalling? It makes no sense to me apart from maybe Pearce doesn’t like our club that much. He can’t make this excuse for Eastmond who has more or less the same number of first team appearances as Smalling. Moreover, he’s performed to a much higher level than Smalling has in those appearances. Obviously i’m not saying he should drop Smalling for Eastmond. I’m merely asking the question how come it’s one rule for certain players from other clubs, and another for Arsenal players? It’s weird…….i don’t know.

  • September 8, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Oh, and when Capello hears about Chuks (if he hasn’t already), he will love him and want him fast-tracked too. I don’t think England have a young talent that brings what he brings to the field of play anywhere throught this country. This kid is different class, him and Jack Wilshere will be England mainstays for quite a while.

After watching the reserves against Blackburn at Barnet is anyone else a tad concerned at the poor performances of Djourou and Fabianski again? Also the fact that a midfield 3 of Aneke,Eastmond and Denilson still ended up with Denilson marshalling the back four in his usual terrible style, surely that should have been Eastmonds job as Denilson just hasn’t got it in him do it?! On the plus side JET looked frightening with the ball,Aneke was a class above,Afobe ran all day and finished brilliantly,Eastmond was full of energy and even Miquel playing as a left back looked good,to me though I’m worried what’s gonna come our way late in the season when our customary injuries come along and leave us with Djourou and not-so-fab-ianski at the back, scary thought.
Anyway due to Walcotts and Van Persies 6 weeks injuries does anyone reckon any of these quick young boys might get a chance due to the pace being taken out of the flanks?Obviously Eboue or Rosicky will get the nod but maybe JET may get in to offer something different?

WO WO WO! I did not suggest that Eastmond was better than Denilson,I simply said that Eastmond is a holding midfielder, whilst Denilson is not, with our 3 man midfield we have the attacker in Fabregas,Diaby mixing between the 2 and Song holding,Denilsons best position is where Diaby plays and NOT songs role, that’s what I was implying, and seeing as he’s come back from a back injury surely it would be a good idea not to have him doing a defensive shift more than Eastmond? I know it’s only reserves but still he can’t get played out of position when he makes hiscomeback,it doesn’t work, that’s clear.
Djourou on the otherhand,ok he came back from injury, late April I believe, played last game, had a full pre season and I can understand not being at your best at that point but if you didn’t see the match – Squillaci nodded the ball down to him,he let it bounce twice and then missed the ball,Benjani run onto it-goal. 2nd he gave the ball away sloppily-goal.3rd the ball was played into Benjanis feet with Djourou marking him,Djourou then for some strange reason decided to grab him and just tug him all over the place-penalty.Now that’s not match fitness, that’s pure shabby and lack of concentration, before you say it YES I do go to all the games,I have a season ticket,I go to about 5-6away games ayear, watch reserves down at Barnet etc and he has never really looked too great, this is an opinion based on longetivity, personally I think Nordtveit will get ahead of him and Bartley in time will too,I can’t see a long career for him at Arsenal and that’s my personal opinion.

I think you should re-read what I wrote about Eastmond initially, I think you’ve read it the wrong way around.

And I’ve watched a lot of the three since the 08-09 double winning season and that’s what I’ve ascertained. I mean attitude on the football pitch, not in a social circle or in training. Fabianski is apparently awesome in training but that’s no good as he seems unable to reproduce it on the pitch.

What games are people watching where they see Eastmond play good? In his first team appearances, he broke up very little and his passing was bad. I like most of the Arsenal young gunners but i feel people are grasping at straws when trying to find things that Eastmond is quality at. Average player to me.

Watch the games again in which he played last season especially Liverpool, Bolton away and Wigan.
