Lansbury Plays In Goal As England Lose

Henri Lansbury played in goal for the final 30 minutes of England Under 21’s clash with Germany U21’s this evening. Lansbury, who started the game on the right wing, went between the sticks when Jason Steele was sent off on the hour mark.

Lansbury began the game well in the opening stages, almost finding Scott Sinclair with a free-kick with just 10 minutes on the clock. However, it was a rare England attack as Germany began to dominate and eventually take the lead through Konstantin Rausch.

Jason Steele replaced goalkeeper Scott Loach in goal at half time and did well, making two key saves to stop it being 2-0. Lansbury then found Nathan Defouneso with a fantastic ball in-between the centre backs but the Villa striker lashed wide.

Then came Henri’s big moment. Steele was sent off after clipping down Germany’s Vukcevic and Lansbury, who often plays in goal during training for Arsenal, took Steele’s gloves and jersey and went in goal to face the penalty. Cenk Tosun sent him the wrong way from 12 yards. 2-0.

Lansbury then went on to make a selection of good saves to keep it at 2-0. He first did well to tip over Vukcevic’s flick header from close range and then save Tosun’s long range drive. Henri didn’t have a lot to do after as England searched for a conciliation, but two further long range efforts and another header in the penalty area were all dealt with by the Gunners midfielder in with succession.

It finished 2-0 but Henri’s performance in goal will memorable in a largely unforgettable fixture for the young Lions.

looks like Szczesny has another contender for #1 then. But on serious note, it’s a nice surprise to see Henri on goal. A bit funny too considering iirc Arsenal.com just run the piece earlier on today about James Shea where he mentioned about Henri fancies playing as gk during training

How does JET or Bartley not get selected for that side. I know Pearce likes to play 6 DMs every game but seriously.

Henri looked a lot better in the short period (5mins?) playing in the centre than he did out wide. His first touch was a lot better than I expected when he went in there.

Funny that earlier today the Arsenal website posted an article where James Shea said Lansbury loves to go in goal in training, and then this happens!

Lansbury’s pass for Delfouneso was wonderful; if I remember correctly he cushioned the ball from Cork with his left as he spun round to face the goal, and slid the perfectly weighted pass with his right, all in one elegant flowing motion. So elegant, and shows fantastic technique and awareness – the kind of thing you expect from Cesc.

(Before anyone gets their panties twisted, I never said Lansbury is or will be as good as Cesc)

And I almost forgot to mention the commentator: he praised Cork’s interception and Delfouneso’s run in the move, but did not utter a word about Lansbury’s wonderful turn and pass…. where do they get them from?

…..Hahaha. I noticed that. I was like; and what about the pass Leroy? Stunned.

That was the fantastic ex-pro Leroy Rosenior who sounds a lot like another twat, Stan Collymore. ESPN officially have the very worst punditry/commentary team. I’m still trying to decide who’s worse, Rosenior or Waddle. The funny thing about Rosenior is that he has no clue whatsoever. Sometimes he starts saying something and then struggles to find the correct words to use to finish off his sentence. Listen to him closely next time. Clown starts stuttering and shit….

Jamie, do you see a long term future for Lansbury at Arsenal. Wenger seems a keen admirer but im concerned that there isnt any space for him.

I think Lansbury has a future here, but it’s up to him. He’ll certainly get a chance and then it’s all about performances. He’s something different and you’re right, Wenger likes him.

Elsewhere, England Under 18’s beat Poland Under 18’s 3-0. 69 minutes for Aneke and 90 for Yennaris. Good run out but really a walk over for the young Lions.

Wenger said Lansbury is a player he wants to keep at the club ’cause he is similar to Ray Parlour and that says a lot about the kid. I hope he makes it and becomes a great squad player, he wont start IMO with Ramsey and Wilshere being our future CMs.

Eh, w/ a midfield of ramsey and wilshere we lack seirous height. PLus Lansbury could be a Denilson esque CDM, screening the back four, tight marking and ball tracking to make well time interceptions.

      Wilshere-Lansbury-Ramsey

Lansbury has some decent qualities, but let’s face it, he has some very stiff competition in front of him.

Regarding the comment about height in midfield. That problem is likely solved by Aneke sooner than Lansbury. I’ve always maintained that Aneke poses the biggest problem to Lansbury’s future at the club. Aneke is not yet 17 1/2 years old and he already impresses me more than Lansbury. When you also consider that fact that it’s highly unlikely he will beat out Wilshere or Ramsey or Song or Nasri or Diaby, things just look bleak for him.

It’s not impossible, but it’s a dogfight for Lansbury to have any chance of beating out his competition because there are so many gifted midfielders at the club.

There’s still Ozyakup and Yennaris behind him. Lansbury just doesn’t show the guns for the Arsenal midfield fight for me…but we will see…

england and arsenal don’t know what they have in Henri Lansbury.. 5 minutes into the 2nd half he moved into the middle and we almost scored..we had creativity comming through the middle.. wasted wide right but they keep playing him there. rodwell good but doesnt create tonight to much holding mfs. as for GK.. looked quite natural.he looked very small between the sticks even though he’s 6ft..but other than the pen. kept a clean sheet .. ! hope he enjoyed the experience

JS this just sums stuart pearce.

Puts England most creative player in goal!

JS do you feel sorry for henri lansbury and rhys murphy in particular.

I always remeber that euro under 17 they were both different class. They were ahead and shoulders above guys like welbeck, rose, victor moses.

Lansbury is a massive talent, hes a rare talent hes got ability but hes got the mentality as well

Lansbury will put his body on the line, play anywhere those are the types of players you need in your squad.

He is committed, passionate, determined but technically hes excellent.

You dont see many players with his attributes.

Hes like a roy keane, viera he can do the dirty things but when he has the ball hes different class.

Song’s not bad either. Whatever way you look at it, the Arsenal midfield over the next 5 seasons and beyond should be the best in Europe:

Wilshere, Ramsey, Song, Nasri, Denilson, Aneke, Diaby, Lansbury, Fabregas (?)

    I may be forgetting others.

JET plays well when on the field but his playing time is limited for the first team and he has not been called up to U21’s. Why? Is he a headcase?

there’s no real reason to leave JET out of this u21 team but sometime coaches aren’t happy with payers attitude on and off the pitch.

if stuart wants a player who is not a luxury player and is willing to run up and down the field for the entire match then you can see why he overlooks JET time and time again.

JET is probably the biggest talent in our reserves but as wenger said he still needs to get his fitness right and become more mobile on the pitch. Not just in attacking sense but also in defending.

JET finally has a position he can mature in, now all he needs is to get his fitness and the right temprament after that this kid will have the world at his feet

Went to the u18’s and it wasn’t really a walk over at all, though it was fairly comfortable by the end. Poland’s trouble was they had no real attack, which was rather handy as one of the England CH’s (#5) was diabolical and they could have got a lot of joy there.

Aneke was terrible. He had a Heskey and it was a relief when he was taken off.

On the other hand, playing left of the 2 in a 4-2-3-1, Nico was outstanding. Dogged and determined he took control of the midfield and was the stand out player. Started by just sitting but times his runs forward as the game went on and showed good strength and guts as well, coupled with incisive passing.

Wenger rates henri lansbury very highly he even said,” Hes got qualities that are very difficult to find in a modern footballer” on ATVO

Lansbury has got plenty of time wenger said he could start for arsenal this season and he wants to keep him.

As for benik afobe i have seen him about 20-30 times and for me hes not good enough technically, tactically and has no link up play whats so ever.

He will be a good player player at a lower level than when he gets older playing at a top level.

He reaally is like darren bent and i can see him following the same path.

Vela, bendtner, walcott, jay thomas, van perise, chamakh, afobe hasnt got a chance in my opnion.

Lansbury can play left wing, centrl midfield, right wing, off the strikers, full back you can see him, in the squad cause of his versatlity with afobe hes just a striker thats it

Remember last season, you said on many occasions that Luke Freeman is better than Afobe? I’ve noticed that you haven’t mentioned Freeman once this season. Is it because he’s struggling to get a look-in at Yeovil whereas Benik continues to go from strength to strength, already getting games – and goals, at the same level as Luke, despite being a year younger. Of course, this isn’t indicitive of how their futures will pan out but right now, looking at it from where i’m looking at it, it looks as though Benik has a lot more to give than Luke. Seems you was wrong there, eh?

Btw, what’s Luke Ayling saying these days? You should know cos you loved him and was convinced he was better than Bartley and would someday go on to captain Arsenal and all sorts. How wrong you was once again……tut, tut, tut.

    On a plus note.

Alban Bunajaku looks class. He really reminds me of matt le tissier, bergkamp tall, skillful, elegant. He looks a classy player.
