Arsenal Open Talks Over Jenkinson

Arsenal have opened negotiations with Charlton Athletic over a compensation package for defender Carl Jenkinson. The 19-year-old has all but agreed terms on a contract, leaving only a fee left to be agreed.

Jenkinson turned down a new deal with The Addicks last month, following interest from West Ham, Fulham and crucially, Arsenal. The Finland Under 19 international is thought to be an avid Gooner, and rejected a new contract at The Valley to help seal a move to North London.

The only issue left to be resolved in compensation. As Jenkinson is under 24, Charlton are eligible for a training allowance, but as yet, the two clubs are yet to agree. Arsenal are keen to avoid going to a tribunal, so are willing to part with a fee of up to £1 million. Charlton value their player as upwards of £2 million.

The six foot one inch right back would go straight into Arsène Wenger’s first team, offering the Frenchman his mix of power, pace, and good ability to cross with either foot. However, many in Charlton’s Academy believe Carl’s future is as a centre back.

More to follow.

      VanDaManPersie, you obviously did not read the article. It says right back but he can also play as a LB and a CB. Please read before you post.

      I did read it, but i’ve read other articles that indicate he’s a LB. Yes he can use both feet, but what position does he play for Charlton?

    I like the ‘good ability to cross with either foot’ part.yes we need that and the height.

    since charlton only collected £1.7m last summer from liverpool for jonjo shelvey who, having played 42 first team games for the addicks was more experienced than jenkinson, a million sounds about the right price.

    Afew people are classing him as a left back but I’m nearly he is a RB.

    Hopefully he turns out to be a gem… Sagna has been awesome but I think he needs a good understudy like Clichy/Gibbs.

    I have never taken to Eboune he never really prove his worth when Sagna okay he play okay in afew games but he lacked passion, defending awarness/ablilty and was a disgrace to the club with his play acting.

    I’d much rather have a younger player who was hungry than a overpaid spend there career warmer the bench joke.

    Fingers crossed that’s Eboune gone this summer along with Densilon, Alumnia, Squallaci, Vela, Arshivan these players are not winners and lack any heart whatsoever which is exactly why he didnt win anything this year!!!!!

      Think Arshavin is class but wasted on the left wing. He is a deep second CF in the Bergkamp role, that runs at defence with his trickery.

      John, eboue is a v.popular player in and around the club. He’s no dani alves, or even bacary sagna, but i think it would be a loss if he does get sold. I personally think hes a great back up, someone who doesnt moan and despite not playing regularly keeps morale high. This kids versatility sounds appealing though, and having played for charlton this year, we can assume he wont need to be loaned out for schooling as such. I do agree deni, almunia and tomas have all come to an end here. Arshavin i think still has a bit to offer. Diaby has a season left to prove his fitness, but cant wait to see rambo, jack and frimpong play.

    To clarify this he is rb the confusion has come cos he is currently filling In at lb. He has also played cb in his short career. But he prefers dm. Sounds like a typical arsenal player jack of all positions master of none.

    Good news deal almost seal just remaining compensation fee we need a back up for sagna, eboue is not good enought because he does not fight for place with sagna also about the place jenkinson plays he is a rightback who can play in central defense or leftback which is the position he plays for charlton.

    Sorry yes add Rosicky. Arshivan is a good player but only when he wants to be and thats not good enough.

    We need to get rid of anyone not putting in the effort week in week in. Wilshere has shown op all the players mentioned we need to create some room and generate some transfer funds. They will not be missed.

    We do need to clear out some players. Gibbs is going nowhere. I just have the feeling that we won’t clear out all the players who we want to see go. Wenger has stuck with some of these players through thick and mostly thin for a few years now. What really has changed now?? What would make him et rid of Diaby, or Denilson or Bendtner?? What has changed so much to make him do this??? We might bring in one or two players but I think we will be left sorely disappointed with who stays. This is coming from a Wenger fan himself. He really does need to think about what is best for the club. He’s gotta put his ego aside and think about getting rid of the players mentioned above, or at least consider their future and discuss what his plans are with them and make them aware that they will never be 1st choice and maybe even 2nd choice. If they are happy being 2nd or 3rd choice, then it is good to have a deep squad. If they aren’t happy then get rid of them.

    Arsene Wenger is expected to make a comment on Jenkinson tomorrow in his press conference.

    It’s being reported all over the deal is done, but a Football League agent told me earlier that there is still some things to iron out. Expect more news on this tomorrow.

    Thats great news my charlton mates really rate him highly.

    Jamie sanderson

    Are arsenal trying to make Saed Hajrovic into a right back?

    I always thought he looked like a really good centre back for the under 18s but recently hes been playing as a right back.

    It should be boateng playing as a right back and hajrovic as a centre back

    John…once again you have proven your stupidity. Everyone knows Eboue plays a major role in the squad which has been documented plenty of times. More goes into football then just kicking around a ball.

    I don’t want eboue to go but he may have to if he wants first team football.

    Jenkinson is a Gareth bale type tall fast, great on the ball, good crosser and he’s got power plus he’s English. It’s good to see arsenal buying English players

      I am not english so he gains no points for that in my book. I do always hope for the local lad story tho like Wilshere and Lansbury. As for Eboue, I don’t remember Eboue complaining about not being a starter plus he signed a new contract when he was the back up. I personally think he is a very good back up too. Point me to a team with a better back up right back…

      Shane – Man City have Richards 1st choice, Boateng 2nd choice, I would certainly have Boateng over Eboue in fact i would have him over Sagna. But i agree with others about Eboue, he is an ok RB can fill in on the right flank and is a character in the dressing room. I see Jenkinson as 3rd choice right back but also offers options at LB CH and even DM so why not sign him. I would also assume he must be considered a more ready option than Cruise, Miquel, Meade, Eastmond, Hoyte, Randall, Hajrovic, Boateng, Edge, Angha, Monteiro in any of their positions.

      English players – especially the ones being picked regularly for the national team – get more leeway and protection from the referees, and that is why we need more of them.

      I don’t rate the Man City Right backs over ours but I posted before that we are not going to have the back ups of a team with no budget. Man City can pay there back ups what our starters make. Also you named 1 team, which pretty much proves my point. Eboue is a good back up.

    Milo…. Getting rid of our reserves is not the way to win a title. Figuring out why in the hell our starters get injured so often would help. No team is going to win the league with their back ups playing 40 percent of the games. I will say, the 2 positions we must find another back up or some just step up are defensive mid and striker. With RVPs injuries he is not putting up the numbers you need to win a title and with Bendtner and Vela not showing that they can be legitimate strikers for us and Chamahk simply does not have top class ability, we must do something. A guy like Falcao would be awesome in my eyes. Then I know we can plug a few guys in when Song is out but none of them are tacklers. Coquelin might be the answer but that will take another 3 years. In my opinion, now is the time where we must truly make the step forward because all we need is a few pieces now and to solve our injury issues and we are there.

      Nope he has signed a long term contract and he cant be far from international recognition, with his preformances being of a high standard its likely he will get enough caps for FIFA to recognise he is an exceptional talent……..bearing in mind that anything to do with Michel Platini is going to screw us over in some way,…….cant understand how one of the most naturally gifted footballers of all time can be so anti football and basically such a CU*T

    The reason we are not winning anaything is our reserve players have not stepped up when a first team player has been injury or out of form.

    Eboune is a c**k end of he has not contributed anything bar diving and acting like a fool. I think alot of fans cant stand the player and he should be sold.

    Mr. Wenger, has to stop viewing all the players as his own children, and focus on building a squad fit to challenge an entire season on all fronts.

    He must consider:
    Defence, holding and out and out attack; Strength, balance and speed;
    Experience, leadership and power;
    Agility, quality and resolve;

    He must include in his team 3 or more players that can turn a game. His assistant must assist with creating a wall of defence. Time to mean business! Time for Arsenal to reach the next level!

    I want to see the coaches of the youth and reserve squads raise their standards. Imagine we are bringing some of the best young players in the world! Why are we not always seeing the evidence of that in games this season.

    To many people very confortable at Arsenal. Maybe it is time for a good clear out at all levels.
