Deacon Joins Sunderland On Trial

Roarie Deacon is set to follow George Brislen-Hall out of the Arsenal exit door, after Liam Brady opted not to extend his contract. Deacon has since joined Sunderland on trial.

The promising winger has been one of the Reserves’ leading lights in recent weeks, including a superb showing at the recent Dallas Cup. However, with a selection of Under 18’s fighting hard for places, Brady has made the surprising decision to release the Londoner, who had been in the third year of his scholarship.

Deacon hasn’t been short of offers, and joined Sunderland on trial this week. He played the full 90 minutes against Preston North End this afternoon, as the Black Cats confirmed their place in the ToteSport Cup final. Former Gunner Jason Banton also featured, and both turned in impressive displays on either wing.

A decision on whether Sunderland sign Roarie is expected shortly.

Classic example of excellent not being good enough to break through. You have to be outstanding.

why release deacon when we barely have really good wingers… seems like all we’ve been keeping are the central mids and releasing everyone else. We’ve been missing pure wingers for a while now… even Walcott seems destined to play up front as a striker… maybe we’re planning on playing Lansbury on the wing as well and we’ll be a team full of CMs playing on the wings…

So they are getting rid of Deacon? But Randall, Cruise, Hotye, Murphy are still here? This is a joke.

do arsenal gain anything by spending there time and money developing these young players, smaller clubs must love it, we find them, train them then give them away for nothing, my opinion is it seems its a big waste of resources

Yes, because you think about how the system has helped develop Djourou, Szczesny, Gibbs and of course Wilshere.

How much would Wilshere cost to buy right now? Whereas its hardly cost us anything to develop him. Its easy to look at a few players being released and moan, but the bigger picture is worth it.

People moan when we don’t have enough English players who love the club, then when we try and make our own, people moan. The Academy is a business anyway, the amount we get in loan fees and such covers the costs.

Also, a few other players are soon gonna follow tech9, wilshere and the lads.

This is not something I support but DiabeticRik may have been getting at the idea of closing down the school boy side of the academy. Because a lot of the aforementioned players: Djourou, Szczesny, Gibbs etc joined Arsenal at 15/16 and went into the under 18s. So you could almost run a dedicated scholarship academy starting from Under 18s upwards.

Not my view, just an idea.

Why releasing him, i think he did well in the dallas cup also we don’t have enough wings in the reserve and non of the wings in the reserve play better than him because most of them are central midfielder converted to the wing, well the coach know best so i wish him the best.

Very big suprise, he’s been one of our best players in the reserves and was excellent at the Dallas Cup. He’s also a type of player we don’t have, tricky wingers who like to go past people, 2 footed and first time finishing. He’s also been here since he was a kid and was in the same team as Jack Wilshere growing up.

Deacon did seem to be doing well but I can only assume the staff looked at the situation with Miyaichi, saw how well he was doing at Feyenoord and made their decision based on that. Would it have been right to offer him a contract when in 18 months time, age 20, he would be in the same situation as Hoyte, Randall and countless others? Limited to loan spells and reserve matches, waiting for their contracts to expire.

its funny how Miyaichis been at the club
for 2 seconds and gets a loan playing first team, when Deacons been here for 10 years no pro contract and gets binned. Loyalty get you nowhere. How much money is Miyaichis on plus the opportunity hes getting. Seems like the Far East market is calling…. good luck Deacon go and make your career and money

Reality is harsh. In order to produce the best, Arsenal have to make tough decisions like this. If Arsenal had kept him around, he’ll probably end up just like Ozzy and Merida, PO-ed that they weren’t getting any chances. Unfortunately there are only so many spots. The good thing is that the staff are cutting some pretty talented kids which can only mean that the holdovers are just as, or even more talented.

Not everyone is going to make it. Some you just have to let go so they can continue their development elsewhere.

The Arsenal first team needs 4 out and out wingers. With Miyaichi and Botelho we have two in the pipeline. So maybe there was scope to keep him, but perhaps his face just didn’t fit. We don’t know all the details, so it’s hard to jump to conclusions. I imagine the club have good reason to release him as they see him more often than the readers of this website.

Jonathan is spot on, have some faith in our academy coaches who have allowed some incredible talent to come through and flourish. If they haven’t seen enough in this guy then he must be missing something, which would also be backed up by the fact it’s Sunderland jumping at the chance to trial him (rather than sign him instantly on what they have seen of him at Arsenal) rather than Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool or any other far better clubs.

people need to realise that if they aint gonna make it with us at least we have given them a good enough education to get them signed up for other top sides,we are creating good solid futures for many young players and the coaches need a lot of credit for that. It’s not as if we are ‘binning’ them and they’re finished football wise, they have ‘trained by Arsenal on their cvs and many a club will jump at that given the chance,10years from now our squad will be brilliant and full of youth products while the leftovers will scatter into other sides,I think that’sone hell of an achievement, good luck to him

The reality is that only kids of the quality of Wilshere, Ramsey, Cesc are good enough for us to be able to beat other top teams. Guys like Denilson, Diaby, Almunia, Vela can’t perform consistently at the top level and are a large part of the reason why we couldn’t beat Leeds Huddersfield etc. There needs to be a clean out so we can unearth more top talent.

Just watch highlights of how vela plays for wba, he’s absolute quality. He looks like he has barcelona written all over him – exactly the sort of player we want in our squad. He’s adapting to a new position, and needs experience. Who are you to claim certain players “can’t perform consistently at the top level”?! Diaby has actually been very good this season as well.

We are not a small club !!! but if Arsenal want to get rid of bloody good English wingers we will have them… any chance of a striker as well before the season closes?
Love the way Arsenal play and their must win by playing great fooyball attitude. around the box they tend to be too cautious but beautiful to watch!!

If you want to swap managers as well I will throw in my mistress and car keys to make the weight!!!!!

Its really funny how to see how many Arsenal fans have become paranoid about almost everything the club do .’We dont sign enough superstars ‘-ticket price hike , ‘we dont give our English younsters a fair oppotunity’, ‘no proper wingers ‘ ,’Miyaichi signed to open up the far east market’ ,’we keep the no hopers and let the better prospects go’,’no technical players coming through due to strength and pace dominting ‘.The list goes on . Well as far as i can tell Arsenal must be doing something right to have such a huge ,ever growing world wide support, membership and season ticket waiting list.Sorry, not to forget competing at the highest level for the last six years whilst spending peanuts in comparison the big spenders.

That’s life! You have to remember that all youth players will not make it to Arsenal first team except fews will make it!

It is important for some youth players need to play the BEST! Not just average or above. Only TOP and the BEST player!

Arsene like anyone who have combination of ATTITUDE and TALENT then it will be successful!

People have to realise, the 25 man rule has a major impact, this summer will see 6 players (Gibbs, Walcott, Vela, Traore, Botelho, Randall) no longer in the u21 bracket, meaning we have to name them in our 25, loan them out or release/sell them. These 6 bring our total of over 21’s to 27 already. Sure Deacon is a way off that but when you consider a further 7 players (Ramsey, Eastmond, JET, Hoyte, Lansbury, Murphy, Sczcesney) will come out of the U21 bracket the following summer and 7 (Deacons year) the summer after that, you can see the dilemma that will be facing the youth set up. Is it fair to hold on to these players until they are 21 then releasing them, when it will be much harder for them to get a club? I peronally think there needs to be a re-think about the size of the 25 man squad and home-grown players. I am also a strong advocate of changing the U18 league to U19 in line with the FA Youth Cup, thus giving the late developers more opportunity and also a 3 year scholarship rather than 2. With regards to the decision on Roarie, if you look at the rest of his group, the majority have performed or developed considerably better than him Watt, Cruise, Sunu, Coquelin, Bartley, Shea, Henderson. In his case i think the decision is correct, i also think, Cruise, Sunu and Shea could find themselves on the way out this summer or next. Of this summers group you have to say Randall has over stayed and should be released, i cannot see too much future for Traore (unless Clichy leaves) nor Vela (unless Bendtner/Arshavin leaves) As for next summer’s group it would be fair to release Eastmond, Hoyte and Murphy now to give them the best opportunity possible.

If everyone thinks its hard to make it at Arsenal right now just wait another few years its only going to get harder and harder BUT thats a good sign it means our academy is getting more competitive.
I wish them all well but wont be crying over spilt milk liam brady knows what he is doing he watches them day in and day out.

you have to be exceptional to make it. He is one winger we are missing but he was not good enough I guess.. JET, Watt, Sunu Coq, Gibbs, Lansbury, Henderson are only a few who can play in the wings and do good for us. They all are playing in a pretty high level too.

If Arshavin can play in the wing for us then anyone of them can too. You don’t have to be a tricky winger. You just need to be very smart with and without the ball like Arshavin is.

Does anybody believe that Deacon is likely to become a world class winger?
If no then it is logical to release him.
Also Re-read the message from Gazidis and Kroenke to have a better financial return on the team.
That could mean more systematic loan for fringe players and an earlier release of players who are unlikely to make it at Arsenal.

It’s important to understand that beeing seen as willing to release players is key to recruiting the next generation. If a kid knows that if he moves to Arsenal and it doesn’t work out, he can move on, that’s an attraction. If he knows that instead he’ll be stuck in the reserves for three years until his contract expires, it’ll put him off.
