Martinez Joins Senior Argentine Squad

Emiliano Martínez has been called up to the senior Argentina squad for the forthcoming friendlies against Nigeria and Poland.

Martínez, who is a member of the Under 20 squad, was promoted following a last minute injury to Oscar Ustari.

The Arsenal Reserve team back up joins Sergio Batista’s squad straight away.

      WOW He’s only 18yrs old isn’t he?
Hasn’t played a game for Arsenal and is now in Senior Argentinan squad. This is mainly due to visa and injury issues with their other keepers but still he’s only 18
Have a feeling that he will be the real competitor to Sneezy in the long run and one of them will be our long term no.1

How did Mannone improve? He had injuries almost all season!

Mannone was superb for Hull, hardly ever on the losing side and played as many games as Martinez. He has never been on the losing side for our first team either. I would certainly have no problem if we let Almunia, Fabianski and McDermott go this summer but perhaps retained Jens as an experience player/coach and mentor to Chezzer, Vito Shea and Martinez

What are we gonna do when he gets to be Szczesny’s age??? I guess we’ll see who really is the best between them in the coming years…whoever loses will probably leave which is unfortunate!! Hopefully we will get a tonne of money for one of them!! UNLESS one of them is happy to sit on the bench and back the other up, which I don’t see happening!! Who is better in your eyes Jamie???

Everyone said ‘buy a keeper, buy a keeper’ now it’ll be hard to choose between Szcesney, Mannone, Fabianski (when he’s on form) and Martinez. Great young keepers, competition in that position for these youngsters is great

Which proves the point that Wenger is not as incompetent as some people are saying. Had we bought a keeper last Summer, Szcez may well have left.

Our standards are this high because of Wenger. Have faith in him! (comment directed at general whingers, not above post)

All our keeper problems are being solved at once. If only 1 of these guys was 5 yrs older instead of fab manome szces shea and Martinez breaking through all at the same time.

Good news, that means he is rated highly by his country and he has perform well for the reserve this season so maybe in a couple of year’s we will have another good keeper in martinez and we already have good keeper in fabianski, szsnesny, mannone so their is every possibility to have great goal keepers among the one’s the future is bright also people call for wenger to buy goalkeeper but we will start to have a fight on who will be first choice in szsnezny, fabianski, mannone from next season, that is why i don’t believe any rumour linking us with any goalkeeper because is of know use.

wenger said he went to south america on holiday and ‘to scout players’ so i guess we should expect interesting names to pop up especially youth players.

Deluded deluded Arsenal fans. Your goalkeeping problems arent solved. If you compare any of your goalkeepers (bar Szensney and maybe Fabianski) to the other top four clubs, they are no where near second. Mannone is your typical Arsenal goalkeeper; amazing reflexes but is afraid to leave his line. Not dominant when needing to come and claim things. The same goes for Almunia and Fabianski.

So our 3rd, 4th and 5th choice keepers aren’t as good as the 1st and 2nd choices at the other top clubs? Quick, someone alert the media….

His name has only really reached our attention this season hasn’t it? Could it be just making up the numbers like Shea?

However, he really is looking promising. After all, Argentina is actually a good team, unlike England. The way I see it, if Fabianski, Szczesny, Manonne and Martinez all turn out to be fantastic, we’ll have to sell one or two of them and that money will be invested elsewhere in the squad.

Martinez is as good as szczesny. Martinez plays like a veteran and very composed. He’s a better kicker. I always thought szczesny was special but my word he’s got some serious competition!

Szczesny hasn’t really impressed me to be honest. He’s been solid, but he makes mistakes that would have Almunia blasted in the papers. I hope he improves and he’s certainly got the talent, but nobody should be under the illusion that’s he’s the finished product, as a large contingent of our fans seem to be.

@Jake, do u mind giving me a list of all these mistakes that would have Almunia blasted in the papers? CC final but really Koscielny should have dealt with that, what else…?

I wasn’t thinking of that one to be honest. Take Arsenal’s most recent game. I feel he could have done more in those goals. They’re the sort of goals which aren’t glaring mistakes, but the goalie could have done more.
The Anfield game is the best example. Almunia was criticised for letting in that goal at his near post. That’s the sort of mistake Szczesny makes. I’m not on about the Reina-type error.

argentina do have a huge reputation of calling up players from youth through to lower leagues. i think maradona had called up roughly 150 players to the national team before the world cup. obviously rated of course. hadnt tech9 already played for polland by martinez age though? to great keeping prospects!!

Those call ups are generally Argentinian based players, in an attempt to inflate their value prior to a move to Europe, assisting their clubs and therefore their FA. This particular squad was made up of European based players under the age of 25. With Ustari out, there wasn’t really anyone else who would fit those criteria.

An FYI, this is not the senior team. This is an u-25 team Argentina has called in for these matches.

And Martinez was called up because of passport issues with other keepers.

    Not the best reporting here

By passport issue, Martinez has a Nigerian visa from the u17 world championships in 2009. Easier to bring him into fold than wait for other keepers to get visa.

Still a good look for him.

jees you lot…talk about over excitement, the poor kid is 18 and you’re already putting massive expectations on him. The big problem we have is a lack of experience in the squad and a keeper is the one position that needs a solid base of knowledge and games under his belt. Look at all the young keepers that have been successfull and then check out the defences they played behind…far more solid than our current back four. Lets just hope we sort out our problems at the back – whether thats new coaching…players or both!
