Wenger To Run The Rule Over Youngsters

Arsène Wenger will run the rule over last years loanees as well as a selection of promising Reserve team players when pre-season kicks off a week on Wednesday.

Neil Banfield’s first-team hopefuls will return to London Colney at the same time as the first-team, on July 6th, instead of earlier, as with previous years, with the rest starting medical tests on the 4th. Wenger is expected to concentrate his early efforts on those who made significant strides on loan last season, with a view to including them in his re-shuffled squad.

Kyle Bartley is the most prominent candidate to make the step up, with Arsène already holding off interest from Rangers until he’s taken a closer look at the 20-year-old. Carlos Vela and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas are two players with a lot prove, or they could both find themselves spending next season at pastures new.

French duo Francis Coquelin and Gilles Sunu, as well as defender Ignasi Miquel, won’t be involved, as they’re preparing for the Under 20 World Cup. Coquelin’s omission will present opportunities to Craig Eastmond and Emmanuel Frimpong, both of whom will hope to become Alexandre Song’s deputy.

Wellington Silva, Ryo Miyaichi and Samuel Galindo are all due back, but it’s not yet clear yet if they’ll start training on July 7th, or will join up later, due to visa issues.

Have the definite impression that Lansbury will end up heading out the door.
He didn’t feature that highly for Norwich, being used more as a late sub, and the fact that he was allowed to flirt with the idea of a permanent move to Brighton suggests that Wenger isn’t totally convinced by him.

Afobe and Lansbury will both get a first-team chance.

Craig Eastmond will get a chance? How will that happen? Didn’t he fail terribly at his loan spell? Couldn’t get in the team and what not? Lansbury should get a run out I believe as well as Bartley. I’m really looking forward to next week though as I usually do. Let’s see which new guy stands out this year.

I said Eastmond was not good enough for Arsenal from the very beginning and everyone disagreed. I seriously don’t see why you have to let a player play in the first team and hold us back to see that the quality is simply not there. Biggest flaw in Arsene’s management to me is how we always let 1 or 2 guys that are definitely weak spots ruin all the good. In the past it has been Senderous (remember that champions league game verse liverpool), Sylvestre, Eastmond, Denilson, and Almunia are some good examples. Yes, some have clear talent that we let slide because our financial position so we hope they will put it together like Walcott and Bendtner but some simply are not good enough and don’t need to be in or around the first team.

By the way, I am not slagging them off or doubting their careers in football, just speaking the reality of the level of player you need at Arsenal.

I really want to use some of our loanees to get some players. Loan Miguel, Afobe and Aneke to Bolton and buy Cahill. Those three get to play at the top level and we get the centerback we need.

Loans Sunu and Coquelin plus money for Hazzard. Instead of 15 loanees maybe we should turn some of them into first team players.

None of those guys you listed would be courted by Bolton at this point. Why do some people think the loan system is that you just put a couple players in a basket and drop them off at a clubs front door?

While Bartley probably is ability and experience- wise the most prominent candidate to make the step up I think it will be difficult for him coz I think his route to the first team will be blocked by the signature Wenger will no doubt have to make to appease the fans.
Also I think Wenger is too stubborn to get rid of Squillaci this summer
Another year at Rangers wouldn’t be the worst thing for him though, he’s good enough for a prem loan but can’t see any prem mgrs taking him
I think hes gonna be a great player in a couple of years, anyone who can dish it out in the Old Firm at 19 and not go hiding afterwards is just what we need

remember that wenger has not stated publicly that he’s signing a defender. just fans speculations and the media. a new buy is definately a good thing for arsenal fc. i am sure its a big headache for him. still he has a young defence thats developing and a loanee knocking on his door.
dont be surprised if he tells us that bartley is like a new signing. a fit again thomas vermaelen, definately another new signing.

Ok Bubble Boy….welcome to the real world where things let debts play a part in transfer strategy or at least they do for responsible clubs. Look at football now. We can not afford a world class player plus the only world class player Arsenal have bought in any recent times has been Dennis Bergkamp. The rest were all made stars at Arsenal. In resent years, we have bought a first player almost every transfer window. This year it looks like we are ready and financial able to go after 2 or 3. I could go much deeper into the situation but it has been stated over and over again so if you have not understood it by now then you never will.

    • June 29, 2011 at 3:02 am
      Permalink

Hoyte and Upson came through the youth system. Senderos cost relative peanuts at the time. Your choice of names to use as examples is hugely flawed; especially when you consider the fees we received for those three players (not a lot, but enough to have funded their time at the Emirates/Highbury).

We will see at least another four signings in the off season*; all of which will be either on the cusp of, or in their peak years (O-C is not included among these). This will appease the anti-wengerites and fill the gaps in strength and mindset that were evident in the campaign just passed.

The youth players we bring in this year should be seen as little more than a bonus…well aside from O-C; who, at the price being touted will be expected to step up, and i think he has the ability to.

*This assumption is based on a post-season interview by Wenger, and straight up logic: Bendtner is leaving, a replacement is required; Cesc will likely leave, a replacement will be required…etc.

Oh, and anybody got the odds on who’ll be our next captain (in the unheard of event that Cesc leaves)? Vermaelen or Van Persie? My money would be on a defender…

I think Kyle Bartley is ready now and will prove to be a better all round centre back than the majority of names we have been linked with, that is my opinion but I have seen this guy many times, mentally he is very strong, a great leader and organiser, and has pretty much every attribute you could wish for in a centre back, I hope he gets the opportunity to prove the doubters wrong.

Personally I think Bartley would be better off on 1 more loan spell at Rangers were he will gain valuable experience and instead of wasting all that money on a Cahill, we can address our defensive mid area because we need more then just Song because he can’t play every game but then if we signed another center back, Song (would still be the starting def mid) could become the 4th choice center back as well.

i wouldn’t be too happy going into a season with only vermaelen, djorou, koscielny and bartley as our centre backs, no matter how the kid does in preseason. if wenger chooses this, next season will have the same ending as the past 5 seasons.

we need a big rock of a player back there. i don’t like samba especially but he’s probably worth 15 points to our season purely because he’s a big lump who will stop many of the casual aerial attacks that do us in.

bartley should come in as the fifth choice centre back. and wenger should give him 10-15 starts. he should spread the starts around more. too much reliance on key players tires them out and derails our season.

How would a 5th choice center back get 10 to 15 starts? Some of your points are good but I swear, defending is not all about your centerbacks. By the way, simply on the fact that Vermaelen is not likely to miss a whole season so Squillaci will not start 20 games which will help a lot.

    A MUST READ

Here are some interesting facts for you people to ponder.

If Vermaelen does not get a freak long term injury we would have won the premier league. Koscielny, Djurou and Vermaelen are plenty good enough to win the league and 17 million does not need to be wasted on Cahill and I will prove it. Just because of a freak injury does not mean we need to panic. Buying another defensive mid which we need anyways and allowing Song to be the 4th choice CB just incase would be sufficient.

Arsenal lost 8 premier league games last year. Squillaci was a starter in 6 of those losses.

Now on the Fabregas situation and people that claim we should just sell him and he doesn’t put in the effort for us any more.

Fabregas started 22 games in which we took 51 out of a possible 66 points. That is an average of 2.318 points a game. Now for the people that don’t understand math, if Cesc had played all 38 games, we would have finished off on 88 points which would have won us the league.

I just find people perceptions and facts to be all messed up at Arsenal. I hope Wenger sees the truth and makes the right decisions rather then acting on impulse to all this negativity around the club.

the point you’re ignoring is that freak/long-term injuries to key players are all too common, especially at arsenal.

vermaelen, koscielny, djorou and song as cover is absolutely not enough to cover injuries through a long season.

fewer players covering key positions means more injuries and more reliance on weaker squad players.

we need at least one solid ccentral defender plus bartley to be comfortable for the season. anything less is reckless.

    • June 30, 2011 at 8:49 pm

I did not ignore that. I said we should add another defensive mid because we need depth there and that would allow Song to be 4th choice. That would be much better then having Squallaci play 20 games.

I’d like to see youngsters coming through but we have seen this happen quite a lot in these years;have we seen us winning trophies? That is the most important thing for me.Of course youngsters will come through and get into the starting eleven,we have seen many examples of that at Arsenal because our model revolves around bringing in young players.Fabregas is almost certain to leave this summer;Nasri?Maybe. If we keep concentrating on our youth rather than on winning trophies, all the players in the starting eleven will be our youth players come next season with no trophy to show.Which one would be your choice?

samba or not, arsenal needs a complete facelift.
he will be a great addition to the squad.
it will not make sense if deadwoods are still in the team.denilson running like headless chicken, eboue making stupid mistakes that cost us games and arshavin looking bored on the pitch.
if 3 players are not up to scratch we will be lucky to get a draw. the whole team will underperform coz thats 30% of the team affected.
yes we did have that in the past but we won…. and yes we had matchwinner in henry and master passer like vieira and cygan can leave the pitch with a relief.

Here is another one. With Djurou starting we only lost 2 games out of his 22 appearances. Here goes some more stats aka facts that might surprise you and make you rethink your opinions.

Here is each teams goal against numbers when each player has played at center back in the premier league last year.

Vidic – 35 games and 33 goals against. That is O.94 goals against per game.

Kompany – 37 games and 33 goals against. That is 0.89 goals against per game.

Djurou – 22 games and 15 goals against. That is an amazing 0.68 goals against per game.

It is funny how much perception plays a part in people’s thinkings. We are much closer to success then people paint out but unfortunately it looks like the media perceptions and fans over reactions are finally going to tear the project apart.

I agree for the most part mate. I personally have liked Samba tho for a while now, even before this season. He is a diamond in the rough for me and I think people would be surprised by him if he was at a big club.

I agree on the overall point though and it is the point I have been pushing forever now. I just decided to break what I naturally see down to numbers for others to recognize. I personally hold a very clear view of most situations because I don’t get caught up in the hype or the over reaction to situations. I just see things for what they are. This is why my opinions rarely change on a subject because I have thought it thoroughly.

In my opinion, we need 2 to 3 players tops to win the premier league. Anything else would be a bonus for me. We need another quality defensive mid because Song can not play every game and Song could also be used as a 4th choice center back. We need another quality striker because RVP tends to get injured and you need a top striker to win the league point blank. I truly believe Vela can make that step this year but I don’t know the ins and outs of the situation with him. The last thing is a wide forward that runs at defenders with skill and pace, links up well, can get you 12 to 15 goals and gets assists because you need that with the formation we play. That is why Gervinho would be nice because he is a 2 for 1 signing. He is good at striker and out wide. I would also love Douglas Costa or of course my dream signing for us…Eden Hazard.

We also just need to cut out the real weak links like Denilson, Eastmond, Squilacci (loan out Bartley but keep him open for a recall), Watt, Almunia (if he is not fine with being the back up), and am on the fence about Bendtner. He needs to step up and perform and stop talking or simply leave. Then Chamahk is average for me but is decent for depth. Rosicky is borderline for me if Lansbury is going to stay, he can step into Rosicky’s role.

You make no sense. How do you know the players we are after are not chase by other big club??? According to the news you seems to read to get your facts…… Mata is wanted by us and I’m pretty sure he is wanted by all the top clubs. That is one example to rubbish your comment completely. AND the second of all Bayern is a big club… guess who they want? No not Messi, they want Bendtner who is already in our club. He is rubbish. So obviously the big clubs does not decide who will win the league for us. It’s all about putting a good team together and so far it looks like Wenger will bring in players that are good enough to win the league.

I agree, Bartley could come in as a 5th choice CB (probably with Squillaci leaving and another coming in) and 2nd choice DM.

We have heard that he wants opportunities in the the first team and this will give them to him. He would be a starter in the Carling Cup and early rounds of the FA Cup.

I know some people will argue that he is not experienced in this role and level and will be raw. But Emmanuel Frimpong for me is the definition of raw. And Eastmond for all his effort does not have the quality needed for the very top.

Hopefully a bit of competition would stop complacency slip into Songs game too.

Why should Squillaci leave? If Bartley’s good enough, he and Squillaci can fight it out to be our back-up. For all the criticism, half the teams in the league would love to have Squillaci – he’d be first choice – so it’s nonsense to suggest that he’s not good enough. We’d always like better, but it’s unlikely that anyone significantly better will be willing to come and be our back-up.

I wouldn’t agree on the need for a defensive midfielder – Denilson has shown enough that if we can persuade him to stay, he deserves longer. Basically, the same as Bendtner – evidently lots of talent there, haven’t developed as fast as we might like, but still a lot of improvement to come.

We knew about his talent for ever now and he always made his ambitions to join Arsenal clear but we did nothing. Wenger even made a comment about his intent to bring him to Arsenal but we just wait and wait and now there is no chance he will ever end up at Arsenal.

I am normally calm about our situation but allowing Nasri’s contract to run down to the last year and if we sell Fabregas for a cheap price….i will be pissed. Some stuff, I just find hard to believe.

Squillaci> I’m not saying he should be first choice or anything – just that we’re unlikely to get anyone better than him who will be our back-up. He’s probably not as good as Samba or Cahill (although he was only in his first PL season) but he’s still a decent quality CB on a par with all those who aren’t quite as good as Samba and co. He’d be first-choice or thereabouts for half the teams in the league. If Kyle Bartley is actually ready to start making the step-up to the first-team, opportunities for our back-up CB will be even more limited.

Denilson – you’re right, he’s not an out-and-out tackler, but I still think he’s got something special. Technically, he’s immaculate most of the time – passing and so-on – and he has an uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time that the ball pops out of a melee to his feet. Bit like a fox-in-the-box has a knack for anticipating where the ball will break lose in the six-yard box, except Denilson does it in our own half. I really hope he stays, because he’s a very, very decent young player to have in the squad.

Personally I think you are completely wrong. If we sign another defensive mid then Song could become that 4th option just in case. Song is miles better the Squillaci. As for Denilson, he is going straight backwards. He started here with great potential and looked like a good player but he is getting worse and worse. I don’t want to downgrade our players to much but his time has just ran out here plus he has been talking massive shit about the club. We need 1 more real defensive mid which Denilson is not.

If we buy another CB then realistically we have to get rid of an existing one as they will take up 5 of the 25 places in the squad. Squillaci is the leading candidate for this as he was the lowest on the pecking order and is the oldest.

Theoretically Vermaelen, Koscielny & Djourou all have their peak years ahead of them.

But for all the talk of buying a new CB I wouldn’t be distraught if we started the season with Vermaelen & Djourou as our first choice pairing.

Two things: firstly, you over-rate Song as a CB, I’m afraid – he’s a world class DM, but a large part of that is his ability going forward; I wouldn’t want him playing a significant role at CB if for no other reason than that he’s wasted if he’s not in midfield.

I kind of agree with you that we could do with another defensive midfielder of Song’s class – if you know where another Song’s hiding, give Wenger a call. In the absence of a top, top player, Denilson and Diaby aren’t bad as the next level goes – and have the potential to become a lot better. If we can persuade them both to stay, and can afford to keep them, whilst another DM comes in, that’ll be great.

Your suggestion that Denilson has been getting ‘worse and worse’ doesn’t hold water, I’m afraid. He hasn’t been in scintillating form, but he’s hardly been going backwards – he just hasn’t improved particularly noticeably, but then he’s not a very noticeable player.

Oh, and I wouldn’t pay too much attention to the way the papers report what Denilson has ‘said’. At most he’s guilty of being slightly tactless in saying things which could be twisted, out of context, to sound bad.

Funny choice of words on Denilson because he is literally going backwards or at least side way in almost every pass he makes. He can not pass over 2 yards and he always gets caught on the ball not to mention like I said, he can’t tackle. You are about the only person I know on here that still thinks Denilson is quality enough for Arsenal.

As for Song, he is class at center back too. You need to go back and watch some of his games their. Diaby is not a defensive mid. There are some quality options out there from Vidal, Fellaini to about 4 or 5 in the french league. Vertonghen who would also be a versatile option. Inler or Jucka (Genoa). Trust me, if Wenger wanted to find a defensive mid, he could.

On Denilson talking, the things that were quoted I seriously doubt someone would just make up. Plus it is not like when false stories a written, they go after back up players.

“Funny choice of words on Denilson because he is literally going backwards or at least side way in almost every pass he makes.”

They were your words… And not ‘literally’, no. If you actually compare his passes to, say, Wilshere’s, you’ll see a lot less difference than you’ve imagined is there.

Fellaini? Fuck yeah, he’s top class. Can you see him leaving Everton for much less than £30 million or so, though? Inler, nowhere near better than Denilson. I don’t know about Vidal, haven’t seen him much myself. Sure, there are players out there – but for a reasonable price? I’m not so confident in Wenger’s ability to create players from nothing, even if sometimes it seems like he can. If they’re not there to be signed, he can’t find them. I’m not saying there’s no-one, but I wouldn’t be as certain as you seem to be that there’s someone suitable out there.

“On Denilson talking, the things that were quoted I seriously doubt someone would just make up.”

No, they weren’t ‘made up’. They never are. They were just twisted to sound bad, when in fact they were perfectly reasonable things to say. Are you honestly telling me that you haven’t yet realised that the papers do that as a matter of course? Doesn’t say much for your judgement…

GUESS THE ONLY OPTION I HAVE TO GET MY POINT THOUGH IS BY WRITING IN FULL CAPS LOL. IF YOU HONESTLY THINK DENILSON IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR ARSENAL THEN IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE A REASONABLE CONVERSATION.

Seriously we are talking about spending 17 million on Cahill who is no better then our top 3 center backs so I am pretty sure 17 million could find us a much better defensive mid then Denilson which we definitely need.

As for Denilson comments, some of the ones that he said no matter what context they are in were flat out disrespectful to Arsenal. None of it matters because like I said, we still need another defensive mid period. There are tons of options better then Denilson trust me. You honestly think Denilson is better then Inler? lol

Let’s see, the CAPS are unnecessary if you have a real point to put across.

I agree with you on most everything, except that Denilson is shite and that Inler is better. Seriously, I rate Denilson higher.

I completely agree that £17m would be better spent on a classy DM than on Cahill, but only if one is available. Unlike you, I don’t think Inler’s in the picture there. I think it’s quite possible that we’d only get a DM of Cahill’s standard (at CB, obviously) for that money, though, and it would have to be another brilliant Wenger signing to be any real improvement on Denilson – because in today’s market, £17 million doesn’t buy you an established world-class player.

Put it this way: would you really say that Denilson has been much worse than not-quite-good-enough? He doesn’t need to improve much to be just-about-good-enough, and if he improves more than that, which he might well do, he’ll be a real asset.

It seems to me that you ignore the fact that Denilson is still fairly young, and will undoubtedly still improve. I’m not satisfied with what he produced last season, but I don’t think he is likely to be either. If he comes back, gets his head down, and works hard, we could see him really make a mark.

My point was not that 17 million needs to be spent on a DM but that in the range of 17 and under Wenger can find a class defensive mid. There are several good ones in france right now.

Yes, for one like I have stated, Denilson is far from good enough to be an Arsenal player. The 2nd thing is he is not even a defensive mid. Yes he is a holding mid but he never tackles or breaks up play. We need another actual defensive mid. Denilson provides nothing to the team other then an occasional long shot and the ability to make a 2 yard pass which all of our players can do that. I was a fan of Denilson when he first can but he has simply gotten worse each year. His time has run its course here for me and the main point is he is not even that much of a defensive midfielder.

Fair enough on your opinion but I just completely disagree. cheers mate

It’s natural to get excited after having a look on prospects from Neil Banfield’s team, but we must not forget , First team in not just another level, it’s more thatn that. Players like. Kyle Bartley, Lansbury, Ramsey, Gibbs, Mannone, Coquelin, Vela, JET need to prove themselves on Loan with a Premier League Club, just like Jack Wilshere, Danny Sturridge. AT Arsenal you have to fight for Title . you are not allowed to learn from your mistakes cause mistakes cause points.

These players might be knocking on the door of first team room, but it’s already congested. It takes more than just talent to get to the middle of it.

To be Honest if a Player is not exceptionally talented like Wilshere , Fabregas, He must not be a part of The team before he is 22. Let them make msitakes, Let them learn at other places.

If Arsenal start Winning trophies They will be willing to wait.

Most importantly let’s not Over-Value our youngsters, Many of them have left on free transfer or very less, like Barazite, Randall, Nordveit, Cruise ….. and Those who haev played for First team Bendtner and Denilson are not wanted by any team for the money we want from them. So it’s not as successful as Arsene would have wanted it. But lets Hope for the best.

    Arsene I still trust.
