Wenger Set To Decide On Asia Squad

Arsène Wenger will select his squad for the forthcoming trip to Asia today, with only a select few youngsters poised to be included.

Arsenal jet off to Malaysia on Sunday, ahead of friendlies against a Malaysian XI and then Hangzhou Greentown, in what is seen as a trip focused entirely on commercialisation. That means the opportunity to impress that some players had been hoping for won’t come until the clash with FC Cologne, or the Emirates Cup.

However, Wenger is expected to include a handful of the most prominent candidates for first-team places next season. Those include Emmanuel Frimpong and Kyle Bartley, while Young Guns has learnt Ryo Miyaichi is all but certain to travel, subject to international clearance. The club are yet to decide whether to persure a work permit appeal for the winger.

Oğuzhan Özyakup, Conor Henderson and Chuks Aneke are some of the outside chances, but all three have handed their passports in and have been carefully assessed since returning to pre-season training on Monday.

Wellington Silva and Pedro Botelho are both poised to miss out, as the club seek to finalise La Liga loans for the duo.

that probably means that wenger will buy a left back… it’s to risky to stick with only gibbs and traore, both injury prone…

Why is Botelho going back to play in La Liga? If he has an EU passport wouldn’t it make more sense to introduce him to the fast and physical English league?

Botelho is not as good as people seem to think even though most people have never even seen him play. I seriously don’t get everyones fascination with Botelho. Also why would any premier league team want to take him on loan when none of them have probably even heard of him and he is definitely more well known in spain.

a player developing under wenger shouldnt be judge at 21.
we are paying his wage he shouldnt be in spain anymore if he has eu citizenship.
good or not, we want to see him even playing for the reserves.
would he extend his contract before going back to spain? or is he running down his contract while we are ignoring him?

What a load of rubbish. A player shouldn’t be judged at 21? Why do we release players under 21 then? Why do we even have this website then? Also we don’t pay all of the players wages when they are on loan. I am glad you know what “we want”….but I want what is best for Arsenal. 2 things, how would it make more sense for a 21 year old to play for our reserves over first team football in la liga. The 2nd thing is you guys are doing another hype job here. Reminds me of the luke Ayling job you guys did right before he was sold to the mighty Yeovil. If he was good enough and qualifies for a work permit now I am sure he would be brought back. IMO opinion people are making a story out of nothing on this one.

Each and every one of us can only dream of matching Shane’s clearly superior knowledge of our squad, so why bother trying. How quickly we forget that it was his expert eye that first discovered such talents as Rooney, Messi, Gerrard and Xavi…

Oh wait, he didn’t do any of that shit.

I assume that if it’s true, then there’s probably a choice between a lower English league – possibly Championship, but maybe not even that – for a season, or La Liga for a season, before Botelho will be established enough to get a loan chance in the Premier League. Seems better to let him make the smaller, easier step first – then at least if he doesn’t make it in England, he’ll have proven himself in Spain so we can get a decent price.

I don’t think Botelho will be eligible for a Spanish passport for another year. If he had had Spanish heritage, like if he were from a former Spanish colony, then he would have qualified by now, but since he is from Brazil (ex Portuguese colony), I believe he will have to wait another year.

This is a chance for Gibbs and traore to battle out to become first choice. If none of them show class we will likely to bring in someone. BIG opportunity for some players and this might be a reason why Wenger has been more active on the market. He wants to see how good they turn out to be. But sadly if we end up 3rd or 2nd I will see that as a failure. And if we bring in new players many will go on loan and hopefully impress.

As some said it already… why send Bothelho to a spannish team when we can send him to championship and hope for the best. The answer might be cus la liga is a more highly rated league and the chances of being injured is less likely and without injuries that mean you can play more or train more and become better faster. That is the most improtant thing right now.

no one believes he’s good enough to take over from clichy but if he’s eligible for work permit he should come to this country and carry out his development.
the hype about botelho is normal, he’s an arsenal player and every single supporter hope that our young players will blossom.
if he moves to another team we will forget about him, just like we forgot merida, nordtveit, barazite, bentley, quincy owusu-abey, francis jeffers
as long as he’s an arsenal player we will wish he could be our next big thing. nothing wrong with that.

In fairness this is all speculation, this website is not based on actual 100% fact but the opinion of Jamie, don’t get me wrong he may have a little bit of insider knowledge or know people within the club but I personally think he is just giving his opinion on the reserves and youth as he looks into it in great detail and knows more than most so before everyone messes there shreddies in anger take a chill pill and note that it’s not fact but opinion, so in regards Botelho, nobody knows exactly what Wenger is thinking regarding him or any other player as he hasn’t said anything and we know how secretive Arsene is and when he does say something it’s usually a smoke screen.

This trip is hardly going to be a test for Gibbs, Traore or anyone else for that matter. This trip is about reaching out to the Asian support, the quality of opposition is poor. That said when we usually play in Austria at this time the opposition is probably as bad. Also they are only going for a week and 3 days are going to be spent travelling, so the club should learn who sleeps well on long haul flights, who recovers well and who likes in-flight meals.

Whether Botelho stays or not, this season he takes up one of our 25 under the over 21 rules, as does Traore, Vela and Mannone, along with Denilson and Bendtner. Assuming Gervinho has signed, we currently sit at the 25 maximum. Therefore, you have to ask if we do not sell Cesc, Nasri or any of the above, then we will have to arrange some long loans , if we are to bring in any new faces.

I think they will have done the Ryo photoshoot to impose themselves more on the Asian market. Traffic from Asia to the Arsenal website will be higher at the moment with the upcoming tour so they’re wanting to promote the lad as much as they can.

I remember when we bought Inamoto, there was more on the website about buying a shirt with his name on the back than about his football ability.

Sorry for the cynicism, I am excited about Ryo, but I’m not that hopeful of a work permit this year

@www I don’t think you understand the homegrown rule.
Basically you can name 25 players in your squad. Homegrown players do not count as homegrown.

A player can be listed as a homegrown if her has spent 3 years at a club in britain when under the age of 21. Under 21 players don’t have to be listed.

Fabregas, bendtner, denilson, traore, vela and mannone are homegrown players. Thus don’t need to bee listed

I’m extremely worry that Arsene intend to give Gibbs his chance in the coming season. {His comment in Arsenal official site} Kieran Gibbs gets injured far too often and he needs to shake off his injury tag and his back up…Armand Traore? Most certainly and Bolteho is just a loan away again come next season.

Gibbs and Traore are both a better option in cross for attacks compared to departed Clichy. But is Both an immerse improvement for defending duties so really I am not so sure myself. Main concern are we really experienced and injury worries free for the left back position for a long season ahead? Hope Wenger to use the tour and friendly matches to decide we should indeed buy a left back this season.

I think this is the best time to capitalize in the asian market because there are actually very talented asian players right now, mainly from Japan. Kagawa and Honda are both good enough to play here. I really wish we had gone in for Nagatomo but obviously that is a goner.

Anyone views to “buy” or “not to buy” as our Left Back for the new season are Gibbs and Traore? Personally I like Gibbs but really he seriously look defensive flapping and injuries hit to last the whole season & is Traore a better deputy that we can rely upon when needed? To me we need to buy replacement after Clichy departed.

I doubt many of us have watched a whole lot of Traore this summer so it is hard to comment. Personally tho, I feel we would need another left back. Gibbs is good but with his injury concerns, we need 2 proper left backs IMO. I am a fan of Martin Olsson from Blackburn personally.

Even if Gibbs is ready to be the 1st choice LB for the whole season (and that’s a big if), we still need to sign someone to provide competition / cover. More likely than not Traore will move on this summer. Vermaelen can play LB but I would rather have him play CB.

The idea of a loan is to touch them up, to see how they perform under pressure and at a higher level than the reserve.
The level of the SPL is below championship. Moreover Rangers and Celtic are so much better than the rest that Rangers only difficult game is the one Celtic games.
Loaning Bartley to Rangers would defeat the purpose of the loan.
Bartley should not be loaned to Rangers.

tour of asia is just for marketing not even part of pre-season trainig. ryo is envolved but it doesnt mean he will be here next season as he still need work permit, i hope he gets one.

    Shane,
you do not get a winner by playing with winners. Determination and will to win cannot be teached, you either are born with it or you are not. Yes playing for a team that compete for trophies can ingrained good habits, but once he will come back to his normal environment, he will revert to type.
However playing for a team with proper defending training (at a decent level) would teach him technique that he will keep him when (if) he comes back.

Everybody knows that Arsenal’s Tour of Asia is a marketing ploy, but it is also a indicator of who is likely to make the step into first team.
By not taking Bartley, it is a sign that he will not train with the first team. So the logical conclusion is that he will be loaned.
Denilson and Bentner do not want to be here, however with their demands (to play for a champion’s league club, be guaranteed first team football and get the same money they are on now) I do not see either of them leaving any time soon or at least not for the price Arsenal seems to want.

“Determination and will to win cannot be teached, you either are born with it or you are not.”

Disagree. That’s precisely how you pick up a winning mentality: from other people with a winning mentality. See what you’re saying re getting an easy ride but, on the whole, playing with better players will always make you better, however it’s true you also need the challenge. I’m sure Bartley was getting that in a brand new enviroment and playing in Europe and all.

@alexd, you’ve misunderstood. Max 25 players 21 years or older. Of them a max of 17 (or is it 18) doesn’t need to be homegrown. Therefore, e.g. Cesc needs to be listed.
