Carlos Vela On Target For Mexico In Rout Over Peru

After a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Argentina last week, Carlos Vela and his Mexico team were looking for better fortunes in their second and final friendly against Peru before three important World Cup qualifiers.

An amazing atmosphere greeted both sets of players as they took to the field, with an exciting game in prospect. Peru boasted much travelled West Ham winger Nolberto Solano as their captain, but the Mexicans were firm favourites to get the confidence boosting win.

Carlos Vela again started as a right sided striker, and with a new set of footwear hoped to put his glaring miss against Argentina behind him. Read on for a full report.

The game started in a frantic manner, with both sides determined to strike first. In their last game it was Argentina who had the early advantage but this time it was the Mexicans. With just 5 minutes on the clock Naelson’s cross went beyond Vela, but fell perfectly for Fernando Arce who headed home unmarked.

There was barley time to get going again before it was 2-0, as Vela failed to connect with a low cross only to see the ball fall into the path of Andres Guardado, who slotted home from close range. Two strikes inside the first 8 minutes has stunned Peru as the Mexicans went in for the kill.

But back came the hosts who tried to force a goal, only to find the previously static Mexican back four deal with the danger with apparent ease. With barely 20 minutes on the clock it was 3-0 and ‘you know who’ was on target.

As the ball was pumped long over the top, Vela advanced only for the goalkeeper to come and make what seemed a routine save. He flapped at the high cross and Carlos was on it in a flash, he glided around the stranded stopper before slotting home from a tight angle.

At 3-0 the tempo and speed of the game was unreal, and with Vela getting on target it showed he can clearly handle the frantic pace of the Premiership. Carlos then nearly had a second, after again out pacing the back four before sliding the ball along the goal line and off the post from difficult position.

However on 27 minutes the fourth goal was found with Vela again involved in its build up. Guardado’s cross found the head of the Arsenal forward who glanced the ball back for Fernando Arce to coolly volley home.

Vela was really enjoying himself, and showing all the qualities you would expect and want in a forward. He was willing to hold the ball up, and use his technique and flair to beat opponents. But he kept giving away cheap free kicks for petty fouls. Possibly a lack of maturity coming to surface, but something he will learn from in time.

With the half all but over, another long ball over the top saw Carlos race forward before again attemping to round the keeper, only for his legs to be chopped away and a obvious penalty not given.

Half Time – Mexico 4-0 Peru

After such an outstanding first period it seemed the amazing pace shown during the first half could not continue. But it did with Peru this time directing the pressure at their visitors. They had a small shout for a penalty after some clumsy goalkeeping from Sanchez, but then worked a free kick which was just placed over.

Peru adopted a more physical manner during the second half, subsequently disrupting the games flow as the fixture became dogged with free kicks. However Mexico always looked capable to scoring more, and nearly did as Torrado flicked Vela in on goal, only to find the Peru goalkeeper dive on the lose ball.

On 68 minutes Carlos was replaced after missing a simple chance to make it five. He raced clear of the back four, before faking a shot and dragging the ball around the keeper, but he lacked composure and saw the keeper tip he tame effort out for a corner.

Whilst Vela was enjoying a drink and a joke with his team mates, Carlos Salcido should have added his name to the growing scorers list. His header smashed off the underside of the cross bar and back out to the disbelief of his manager and the travelling fans.

The final stages of the encounter were about Mexico resting important players for forthcoming games, as Guardado joined Torrado and Vela on the subs bench.

Overall a very impressive nights work from Carlos, who had probably the best game for the National team so far, and looks ready to perform at the highest level for Arsenal. He is only 19 and there are things to work on, but he is clearly putting the work in down at the training ground.

No wonder Arsene Wenger drafted him into his first team straight from the loan spell. True, he is a striker and not a winger – Arsene is always RIGHT!!!.

Great report J.S, I wish I’ve known about the match earlier so I could see it, but as long as Vela played well I’m satisfied.

I’m curious to see if he can play with Walcott. That could be a dream partnership.

Cheers for another great report JS. Wenger has said he will play Vela up front from next year, and he also sees Walcott’s future as a striker. Do you think the two could form a decent partnership? It would obviously be full of pace, but I feel would lack the physical power and aerial ability that Bendtner or Adebayor provide. Keep up the good work!

Haha, it seems Vela loves to go round the keeper! :)

You don’t think you could be able to provide a link where a live stream could be find for Mexico’s matches, do you?

Great job though, keep it up.

Andres Guardado can be a very good player for Arsenal!! superb player and I think wouldn’t cost us that much?!!

I saw Gomez yesterday and I was far from impressed. He wasn’t envolved much, because Podolski and Klose were linking up quit well. I read that Wenger is interested in Gomis today but I still don’t think we will buy a striker.

What is the news on Zapata, have we increased out bid yet?!!

I have been waiting for this case of “i told you so”, for me, the 2 most effective strikers in the world in terms of overall package and variation that they bring to their teams are Drogba & Ade.

The sooner our fans quit bulls**ting and watch matches properly, the sooner they can start to appreciate what he brings to Arsenal. Terry & Rio said in his 1st season that he was the most taxing forward that thay have played against recently and likewise with AC milan’s defender & coach saying the same thing.

Thank you guys, really appreachate your kind words.

Guardado – i like him alot, very natural winger, and full of pace and tricks. His end product on crosses needs some work, but in time he could become world class.

Dos Santos didnt play, he is injured. In all the games ive seen Mexico, Dos Santos has either not played or come from the bench.

Guardado plays for Deportivo and only went there last season, after a bidding war with Dortmund.

I dunno if he’d leave after just one season.

He’s bloody good though, got some pace in him.
